The area investigated includes the wilderness and approximately 150 sq mi of adjacent territory. The additional area covers several RARE II Road less Areas that were classified by the U.S. Forest Service in 1979 as Proposed Wilderness and Further Planning Areas, but were not incorporated in the Pecos Wilderness by the New Mexico Wilderness Bill. For the purpose of this report the entire area is called the study area.</p>\n<p>The study area is at the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo Range. It is characterized by an axial line of alpine peaks that rise to more than 13,000 ft, flanked on the west and north by heavily wooded ridges and canyons that drain to the Rio Grande Valley, and on the southeast by a high dissected plateau of meadows and forest. The plateau is dissected by deep canyons of the Pecos River and its tributaries, and is bounded on the east by a scarp of about 3,000 ft. Partly forested ranch land lies below the base of the scarp to the east, and beyond that is prai-rie of the Great Plains.</p>\n<p>This map is based on geologic and geochemical studies and mine and prospect investigations that were done principally in 1977 and 1979-80 (U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Mines, and New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, 1980; Lane, 1980; Moench and Robertson, 1980; Moench, Robertson, and Sutley, 1980; Moench and Erickson, 1980; Moench, Grambling, and Robertson, 1988; Moench, Sutley, and Erickson, 1988; Erickson, Sutley, and Moench, 1986). An aeromagnetic survey covering almost all of the Pecos Wilderness was flown in 1970. The resulting aeromagnetic map was published by Moench and others (1980) and interpreted in that report by Lindreth Cordell. The EEZ extends from the seaward limit of state waters (3 nautical mi from shore) to 200 nautical mi offshore, and it includes the continental shelves. Within the context of the EEZ natural resource assessment effort, the purpose of this study is to delineate, on a regional basis, the potential for heavy-mineral placers on the U.S. Continental Shelf in the western and northern Gulf of Mexico from the United States-Mexico border to the Alabama-Florida state line. This map is intended to serve as a general guide for placer exploration. It shows favorable sea-floor areas for placer occurrence in water depths ranging from 0 to 100 fathoms (600 ft). The map can be used as a guide for focusing costly exploratory efforts, such as coring operations and geophysical surveys.\r\n\r\nThe potential economic value of heavy-mineral placer concentrations on the U.S. Continental Shelf is a function of both geologic and economic variables. Geologic variables include the composition and concentration of the heavy-mineral assemblages and their environment of deposition. Included here are 21 maps showing the distributions of selected elements or combinations of elements. These regional geochemical maps are based on chemical analyses of the minus-60 mesh (0.25 mm) fraction of stream-sediment samples and the nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate derived from stream sediment. Stream sediments were collected at 1,217 sites. Our geochemical studies of mineralized rock samples provide a framework for evaluating the results from stream sediments.</p>\n<p>The Tonopah 1&deg; x 2&deg; quadrangle comprises about 19,100 km2 (7,450 mi2) in west-central Nevada (fig. 1). Topography is typical of the Basin and Range province, consisting of angular mountain ranges separated by broad valleys that comprise about half the area. Topographic relief is generally about 1,000 m but in some places is more than 1,500 m. Most of the ranges have well-developed drainages in steep-walled canyons occupied by intermittent streams. The climate is semi-arid to arid. Pinon pine and juniper grow in most places at elevations above 2,100 m, and sagebrush is abundant at lower elevations. Major access is provided by U.S. Routes 6 and 95, and there are numerous county maintained gravel roads and unmaintained jeep trails.</p>\n<p>Bedrock geology of the Tonopah quadrangle is a complex mosaic of late Precambrian to Tertiary rocks juxtaposed by numerous thrust and high-angle faults. Useful geologic summaries can be found in reports by Ross (1961), Albers and Stewart (1972), Stewart and Carlson (1978), and Kleinhampl and Ziony (1985). Mineral prospects and mines occur in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks of all ages, and mines are particularly abundant in the central and western parts of the quadrangle. The complex geology produces clasts of mixed lithology in alluvium in all drainage basins sampled in this study, and the numerous mines and prospects probably contaminate many drainages.</p>\n<p>The geochemical maps in this report are based on analytical results reported by Fairfield and others (1985), Hill and others (1986), and Siems and others (1986). These reports also describe the sample preparation and analytical methods and provide information on the location of the sample sites.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1877B","usgsCitation":"Nash, J., and Siems, D.F., 1988, Regional geochemical maps of the Tonopah 1 degree by 2 degrees Quadrangle, Nevada, based on samples of stream sediment and nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1877, 2 Plates: 45.77 x 40.98 inches and 44.62 x 41.77 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1877B.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 45.77 x 40.98 inches and 44.62 x 41.77 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326120,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1877B.JPG"},{"id":327377,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1877-B/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":327378,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1877-B/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"500000","country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -118,38 ], [ -118,39 ], [ -116,39 ], [ -116,38 ], [ -118,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a823d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nash, J. Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas derived from uranium by radioactive decay. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) now projects that 5,000 to 20,000 lung-cancer deaths per year may be attributed to the long-term exposure to indoor radon and its radioactive decay products. Indoor radon has been previously recognized as a health hazard associated with uranium-bearing mill tailings or building materials, but it was not until December 1984 that some natural soils and rocks were found to be sources of indoor radon at levels comparable to those in uranium mines. It is now suspected that elevated indoor radon levels are far more widespread than initially though. The EPA considers 4 picoCuries of radon per liter of air (pCi/L) as the level (in a year-round measurement) at which actions ought to be taken to lower the concentration of indoor radon. All soils and rocks contain measurable amounts of uranium, which generate measurable amounts of radon. Certain soils and rocks, however, have a greater potential to cause indoor radon problems than others because (1) they have a higher uranium content and thus can generate higher levels of radon in soil gas (gas that occupies the pores of the soil), and (2) the permeability of the sol or rack is sufficiently high that radon-bearing soil gas can flow freely and move indoors through the foundation of the structure. This study was designed to demonstrate the correlation between the geologic environment and indoor radon levels and to demonstrate a method of assessment that could be used by other informed workers in areas of their interest. A parallel study by Gundersen and others (1988) of the radon potential of rocks and soils in Montgomery County, Md., used somewhat different methods of assessment because the data available for and assessment of Montgomery County differed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf2047","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the County of Fairfax","usgsCitation":"Otton, J.K., Schumann, R.R., Owen, D.E., Thurman, N., and Duval, J.S., 1988, Map showing radon potential of rocks and soils in Fairfax County, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 2047, 1 Plate: 43.60 x 52.14 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf2047.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 43.60 x 52.14 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184817,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2047/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":278828,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/2047/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Virginia","county":"Fairfax County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.5,38.583333 ], [ -77.5,39.066667 ], [ -77.166667,39.066667 ], [ -77.166667,38.583333 ], [ -77.5,38.583333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b13e4b07f02db6a343e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Otton, James K. jkotton@usgs.gov","contributorId":1170,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Otton","given":"James","email":"jkotton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":259633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schumann, R.
