Also included are 38 crest-stage partial-record stations and 9 low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data collection program, and are published as miscellaneous measurements. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in West Virginia.

The area studied is about 800 square miles in southern Niobrara and northern Goshen Counties of Wyoming. Long-term average annual recharge to the aquifer from streams and precipitation is estimated to total about 24,270 acre-feet. Pumpage from public-supply and irrigation wells is estimated to have totaled about 48,000 acre-feet from 1938 through 1972. This pumpage did not cause any noticeable decrease in natural discharge and it is assumed there has been no significant change in ground-water storage. Pumpage is estimated to total about 39,500 acre-feet for the 3-year period 1973 through 1975. A digital model was developed to simulate the ground-water system in the Arikaree Formation. The model can be used to indicate the general effect of applying hydraulic stresses to the aquifer. Ground water in the southwestern part of the Territory and in adjacent areas along the Niger River is also a potential source. The Niger and Benue Rivers are obvious sources of major supply for eventual large demands, and the Gurara River and sedimentary aquifers also may have that potential. Available data are sparse and highly inadequate for satisfactory design of assessment, development, and management plans for the Territory. Initiation of systematic investigation and collection of data at an early date is recommended. The maximum sustained yield of water from the single well was shown to be less than 900 gallons per minute, and, for a simulated pumping rate of 450 gallons per minute from each of several wells, the optimum placement for either minimum water-level drawdown or minimum spacing of multiple wells was found to be in a line parallel to and at a distance of about 370 to 600 feet from the Ohio River. An analytical method was used to verify the optimum placement of wells determined by the digital model. A rainfall-runoff model was used in the synthesis of long-term annual peak data for each of 54 small watersheds (drainage areas less than 10.2 nii2, 26.4 km 2). Synthetic freqeency curves generated from five long-term precipitation stations were combined into one synthetic curve and then this synthetic curve was combined with the observed station frequency curve to derae the station frequency curve. Synthetic data from the 54 small streams, observed data at 33 small streams, and observed data at 154 large streams were used in the analyses. The most significant independent variables in the regression analysis for estimating flood peaks on Illinois streams were drainage area, slope, rainfall intensity, and an areal factor.

Assumptions for use of the revised circuits are (1) that streams are strictly gaining, and (2) that ground-water seepage into the streams is proportional to the difference between streambed elevation and the average water-table elevation near the stream. No seepage into streams occurs when ground-water levels drop below the streambed elevation. Regional simulation of the 1962-68 drought on Long Island was significantly improved by use of the revised stream circuits.
