Three cases that represent projected maximum, mean, and minimum combined irrigation and industrial ground-water withdrawals at annual rates of 16,176, 11,168, and 6,749 acre-feet, respectively, were considered. Water-level declines of more than 5 feet over areas of 124, 120, and 98 square miles and depletions in streamflow of 14.4, 8.9, and 7.2 cfs from the Laramie and North Laramie Rivers were predicted to occur at the end of a 40-year simulation period for these maximum, mean, and minimum withdrawal rates, respectively. A tenfold incrase in the vertical hydraulic conductivity that was assumed for the streambeds results in smaller predicted drawdowns near the Laramie and North Laramie Rivers and a 36 percent increase in the predicted depletion in streamflow for the North Laramie River. Because streams are small, undependable and relatively inaccessible to most users, ground water is the most important source for increased industrial and agricultural water use. Southeast of Moultrie the principal artesian aquifer is very productive, and has transmissivity in excess of 145,000 feet squared per day (13,500 meters squared per day). A structural or paleogeographic feature called the Suwannee strait traverses the county from near the southwest corner to the northeast corner. In this strait, limestone in the principal artesian aquifer is partly replaced by fine-grained clastic sediment, impairing transmissivity and making wells hard to construct. Transmissivity is much lower northwest of the strait than it is southeast, probably because of facies changes in the aquifer.</p>\n<p>In the belt of the hypothesized Ochlockonee fault, water containing greater-than-usual concentrations of dissolved solids is produced. This anomaly could be the result of the fault having acted as a conduit when the vertical hydraulic gradient was upward from a deeper aquifer, or be the result of the movement of ground water from a sulfate-rich source in the sediments of the Suwannee strait. In south-central Colquitt County, clay-capped permeable beds extending above potentiometric surfaces create conditions favorable for breathing wells.</p>\n<p>Predominantly clastic beds of Miocene age overlie the Suwannee Limestone. These beds have a transmissivity of about 2,280 feet squared per day (215 meters squared per day), but they are of comparatively little importance because larger yields can be obtained from the underlying principal artesian aquifer. Moreover, wells are difficult to construct in the poorly consolidated clastic sediments, and water from these shallow beds is likely to be depleted during droughts.</p>\n<p>The ground water is generally hard, but is otherwise of good quality. One exception is near the hypothesized Ochlockonee fault where water contains higher-than-usual concentrations of various ions, especially sulfate. Another exception occurs along the axis of the Suwannee strait where clay minerals in the channel facies may soften the water by ion exchange.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Nine artificial-recharge pits with areas of approximately 9,200 square feet each were excavated in the unsaturated zones above the three aquifers. Each artificial-recharge site was instrumented to measure inflow, stage fluctuations, and water-table fluctuations. Artificial-recharge tests of approximately 10 days ' duration were conducted at each of the nine artificial-recharge sites and one extended test of approximately 30 days ' duration was conducted in each of the three study areas. Periphyton growth, present in most of the artificial-recharge ponds, was insufficient to cause noticeable decline in the rate of infiltration. The predominant form of dissolved nitrogen was nitrate. Nitrate concentrations (as N) in the upper glacial aquifer in both counties ranged from 0 to 20 milligrams per liter (mg/L) ; those in the Magothy aquifer ranged from 0 to 20 mg/L but were generally much lower in Suffolk County than in Nassau County. Nitrate concentrations (as N) decreased with depth in both counties; below 400 feet, concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.2 mg/L. \r\n\r\nNitrate concentrations (as N) of streams ranged from 0 to ii mg/L, which is an indication of the general quality of water in much of the upper glacial aquifer, the source of most of the streamflow. Generally, concentrations of total nitrogen in streams draining the sewered area of Nassau County were lower than those in streams draining the unsewered area. Median concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen (as N) were 1.3 mg/L for the sewered area and 7.5 mg/L for the unsewered area. Two carbonate stages can be distinguished and defined on the basis of mineral association, compositional range and position in the sequence of ore deposition. Electron microprobe analyses show that the early pre-ore carbonate stage is comprised of rhodochrosite with a compositional range of 68 to 93 mole percent MnCO3, 7 to 32 mole percent FeCO3, 2 to 15 mole percent CaCO3, and 0.5 to 4 mole percent MgCO3. The later intra-ore carbonate stage is made up of siderite-manganosiderite with a broad range of iron content (33 to 94 mole percent FeCO3; 6 to 67 mole percent MnCO3; 1 to 13 mole percent CaCO3; and 1 to 10 mole percent MgCO3). Both carbonate stages are spatially restricted within the vein system, the rhodochrosite limited to the southern third and the siderite limited to the northern two-thirds. The two stages have not been found at the same sample locality. \r\n\r\nThe two stages of carbonate define two of the five main depositional stages in the history of the Creede hydrothermal system and thereby document broad scale variations within the depositing, and continually evolving fluids. However, the complexity of the textural and mineralogical variations within each carbonate stage limits their usefulness in unraveling the finer details of the character of the ore fluids. The frequently massive rhodochroslte has undergone several periods of leaching and regrowth which, except at one locality, cannot be resolved by compositional, textural or color variations. Although some compositionally zoned siderite rhombs have been documented, the siderite, too, has had a complicated history of leaching and regrowth. The zoning indicates (i) an early low-calcium siderite + hematite growth followed by (2) relatively high-calcium siderite depositlon (without hematite) followed by (3) low-calcium siderite deposition without hematite. The composition of the high-calcium siderite lies well outside of the recognized stability field for siderite at 250?C and, therefore, is considered either a metastable phase or possibly a new mineral. \r\n\r\nCarbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of the carbonates together with the hydrogen isotopic composition of inclusion fluids suggest that the fluids depositing the carbonates either were deep-seated in origin, or, less likely, were meteoric waters which came in contact with a large volume of magmatic rock with which it exchanged isotopes. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of the fluids that deposited the carbonates are significantly different from those that yielded the other vein minerals (sphalerite, chlorite, sericite, quartz, adularla). The latter minerals appear to-have been deposited from two distinctive fluids of meteoric origin. The stability fields of minerals present during the carbonate stages have been calculated for 250?Co The results indicate that conditions during carbonate deposition were not drastically different from those suggested by Barton and others (1977) for main-stage ore deposition, although little ore, if any, was deposited during the carbonate stages. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years (Q7, 2) and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 10 years (Q7, I0).</p>\n<p>To provide accurate and consistent low-flow characteristics for uniform evaluation of waste effluent, a long-term period of streamflow record was used for the analyses. The record selected for the study was 1915-75. This was found to be the most representative that included longterm streamflow conditions and various degrees of regulation by storage reservoirs.</p>\n<p>The Q7, 10 discharge on the Wisconsin River ranged from lUO cubic feet per second at the Wisconsin River at Rainbow Lake near Lake Tomahawk gaging station to 2,790 cubic feet per second at the Wisconsin River at Muscoda gaging station. On the Fox-Wolf Rivers, the Q7, 10 ranged from 360 cubic feet per second at Fox River at Berlin to 950 cubic feet per second at Fox River at Rapide Croche dam near Wrightstown.</p>\n<p>Low-flow characteristics that reflect unregulated and regulated conditions on the upper Wisconsin River were compared. This analysis showed no apparent difference in Q7, 10 discharge values due to regulation at the Wisconsin River at Merrill gaging station, although a more detailed study is warranted to fully evaluate the effect of storage.</p>\n<p>The magnitude of the low-flow characteristics are in some instances affected by the period of record. These characteristics can vary as much as &plusmn;30 percent at some gaging stations depending on whether or not the severe drought of the 1930's was included in the Some wells produce about 300 gallons per minute in some of the large stream valleys , about 50 gallons per minute in the rolling upland and small stream valleys, and about 5 gallons per minute on hilltops and steep slopes. Many wells throughout the area do not furnish adequate water for domestic supplies because no significant water-bearing openings are penetrated during drilling. Ground-water use is limited mostly to domestic and stock supplies and a few small public supplies. Ground water is generally a calcium bicarbonate type and in places contains sodium chloride and (or) hydrogen sulfide. Bacterial pollution of ground water is widespread because of direct recharge of polluted runoff and streamflow to cavernous limestones. Chalk reservoirs have been discovered in the Gulf Coast in the Austin Group, Saratoga and Annona Chalks, Ozan Formation, Selma Group, Monroe gas rock (an informal unit of Navarro age), and other Upper Cretaceous units. In the Western Interior, production has been obtained from the Cretaceous Niobrara and Greenhorn Formations. Significant, though subcommercial, discoveries of natural gas and gas condensate also have been made in the Upper Cretaceous Wyandot Formation on the Scotian Shelf of eastern Canada. \r\n\r\nAll North American chalk units share a similar depositional and diagenetic history. The chalks consist primarily of whole and fragmented coccoliths with subordinate planktonic and benthonic Foraminifera, inoceramid prisms, oysters, and other skeletal grains. Most have between 10 and 35 percent HCl-insoluble residue, predominantly clay. Deposition was principally below wave base in tens to hundreds of meters of water. \r\n\r\nThe diagenetic history of a chalk is critical in determining its reservoir potential. All chalk has a stable composition (low-Mg calcite) and very high primary porosity. With subsequent burial, mechanical and chemical (solution-transfer) compaction can reduce or completely eliminate pore space. The degree of loss of primary porosity in chalk sections is normally a direct function of the maximum depth to which it has been buried. Pore-water chemistry, pore-fluid pressures, and tectonic stresses also influence rates of cementation. Oil or gas reservoirs of North American chalk fall into three main groups: \r\n\r\n1. Areas with thin overburden and significant primary porosity retention (for example, Niobrara Formation of Kansas and eastern Colorado). \r\n\r\n2. Areas with thicker overburden but considerable fracturing. Here primary porosity has been largely lost but secondary (fracture) porosity provides some storage capacity and greatly improves permeability (for example, Austin Group of the Pearsall field, Texas). \r\n\r\n3. Areas with thick overburden in which marine pore fluids have been retained, or where hydrocarbons (including biogenically generated methane) were introduced early in the diagenetic history. \r\n\r\nIn these settings, primary porosity is reduced to a lesser degree than in group two, and adequate reservoir properties can be maintained to depths approaching 2,000 m (6,600 ft) (for example, Scotian Shelf of Canada). \r\n\r\nContinued small-scale oil and gas discoveries can be expected from these types of reservoirs in North America. The prolific production of oil and gas from North Sea chalk reservoirs will not be matched in North America unless deeply buried, overpressured chalks can be located. In Santa Clara County, 128 wells have been identified as potential water-supply sources in emergencies. The criteria used to select the wells are: yield of at least 3 liters per second (50 gallons per minute), good water quality, ready accessibility, and available emergency power. Bedrock in the area is composed of a series of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Median yield for 126 wells in four different bedrock formations ranges from 5 to 6 gallons per minute, and median depth ranges from 130 to 200 feet. Lineaments, interpreted as fracture of breakage zones in bedrock, were mapped to identify zones where well yields are expected to be higher than average.</p>\n<p>Unconsolidated deposits in the upper Winooski River basin include unsorted till, water-sorted clay, silt, sand, and gravel. Properly constructed wells in saturated deposits of sand or gravel having high permeability can yield large quantities of water. Twenty-six domestic wells in these unconsolidated deposits have a median yield of 18 gallons per minute and a median depth of 58 feet.</p>\n<p>Chemical analysis of water from six wells indicate a median hardness of 120 milligrams per liter, (as CaCO<sub>3</sub>), which is moderately hard. A preliminary digital model was developed for the Arikaree aquifer using a small amount of poorly distributed data, an estimated distribution of recharge, and a conceptual model of the Arikaree aquifer flow system. Calibration of the model was based on reproduction of the potentiometric surface and the base flow of the Sweetwater River in November 1975. Calculated steady-state hydraulic heads were within 50 feet of the observed heads in about 98 percent of the nodes. The calculated leakage from the Arikaree aquifer to he Sweetwater River in the western area was within about 12 percent of the leadage determined by gain and loss studies. In order to develop a comprehensive digital model that would respond to hydraulic stress in nearly the same manner as the actual aquifer flow system, measured responses of the aquifer to stress are needed. Also needed are additional data on aquifer characteristics, recharge to the aquifer, and stream-aquifer relationships.
