Such studies often aggregate the results of site-specific models and thus contend with evaluating each model for appropriate fit and statistical assumptions. We explored the use of four traditional machine learning models (logistic regression, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis, and k-nearest neighbors) to perform these checks and estimate probabilities that an analyst would publish or reject a site-specific trend model from a multi-site study. We trained these “model-checking models” (MCMs) using a national study of over 6000 trend models and tested the MCMs using a smaller set of novel trend models. Although the MCMs did not perform well enough to bypass analyst review entirely, we found incorporating an MCM into a larger evaluation workflow can reduce the number of trend models needing an analyst review by more than half.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.envsoft.2023.105864","usgsCitation":"Murphy, J.C., and Chanat, J.G., 2023, Leveraging machine learning to automate regression model evaluations for large multi-site water-quality trend studies: Environmental Modeling and Software, v. 170, 105864, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2023.105864.","productDescription":"105864, 11 p.","ipdsId":"IP-154037","costCenters":[{"id":614,"text":"Virginia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":36532,"text":"Central Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441739,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2023.105864","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435134,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9GNEN8S","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Data to support Leveraging machine learning to automate regression model evaluations for large multi-site water-quality trend studies"},{"id":422447,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"170","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Murphy, Jennifer C. 0000-0002-0881-0919 jmurphy@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0881-0919","contributorId":4281,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Murphy","given":"Jennifer","email":"jmurphy@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":36532,"text":"Central Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887781,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chanat, Jeffrey G. 0000-0002-3629-7307 jchanat@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3629-7307","contributorId":5062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chanat","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jchanat@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":614,"text":"Virginia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Paleo-proxy reconstructions such as those derived from tree-rings provide longer-term context and supplement information on this expected range of variability, which can improve planning, management, and response related to extreme events and hydrologic change. However, existing paleo-proxy reconstructions have yet to address the potential for pronounced within- and among-basin variations in the PNW due to a lack of spatial coverage. Here we develop methodologically consistent reconstructions for 36 gages in the PNW, including the Columbia and Snake River drainages, as well as key coastal watersheds. These reconstructions extend back at least to the 1500s coefficient of efficiency. Reconstruction skill is relatively high (mean R2 = 0.63), and snowpack- or winter precipitation-sensitive chronologies from high-elevation sites provide important contributions to reconstruction skill. At the whole-region scale, reconstructed variability indicates evidence for drier and wetter years, more persistent decadal variability, and correspondingly longer episodes of deficit and surplus compared to instrumental records. Within the region, this expanded range of extremes appears especially prevalent in the Snake River and southern PNW watersheds. Regionally, cumulative deficits in the early 1500s and mid 1600s rival those of the early 20th century, though persistence and timing vary widely among basins. Amphibians are facing unprecedented global declines due to many threats including contaminants. While the biphasic life history of many amphibians creates a potential nexus for methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in aquatic habitats and subsequent health effects, the broad-scale distribution of MeHg exposure in amphibians remains unknown. We used nonlethal sampling to assess MeHg bioaccumulation in 3,241 juvenile and adult amphibians during 2017–2021. We sampled 26 populations (14 species) across 11 states in the United States, including several imperiled species that could not have been sampled by traditional lethal methods. We examined whether life history traits of species and whether the concentration of total mercury in sediment or dragonflies could be used as indicators of MeHg bioaccumulation in amphibians. Methylmercury contamination was widespread, with a 33-fold difference in concentrations across sites. Variation among years and clustered subsites was less than variation across sites. Life history characteristics such as size, sex, and whether the amphibian was a frog, toad, newt, or other salamander were the factors most strongly associated with bioaccumulation. Total Hg in dragonflies was a reliable indicator of bioaccumulation of MeHg in amphibians (R2 ≥ 0.67), whereas total Hg in sediment was not (R2 ≤ 0.04). Our study, the largest broad-scale assessment of MeHg bioaccumulation in amphibians, highlights methodological advances that allow for nonlethal sampling of rare species and reveals immense variation among species, life histories, and sites. Our findings can help identify sensitive populations and provide environmentally relevant concentrations for future studies to better quantify the potential threats of MeHg to amphibians.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/acs.est.3c05549","usgsCitation":"Tornabene, B.J., Hossack, B., Halstead, B., Eagles-Smith, C., However, environmental conditions strongly affect local resource availability for much of the year, and can heavily impact consumer foraging and growth patterns prior to pulsed subsidy events. Thus, a consumer's capacity to exploit pulse subsidy resources may be influenced by antecedent environmental conditions, but this has rarely been shown in nature and is unknown in aquatic ecosystems.

Here, we sought to understand the importance of hydrologic variation and a salmon pulse subsidy on the foraging and growth patterns of two stream salmonids in a coastal southeast Alaska drainage.

To do this, we sampled fish stomach contents at a high temporal frequency (daily–weekly measurements) and analyzed fish consumption rates in relation to streamflow and pulse subsidy resource availability. We then explored the influence of interannual hydrologic variation on access to pulse subsidy resources (i.e. whether fish exceeded an egg consumption gape limit) in a bioenergetic simulation.

Prior to Pink Salmon spawning, Dolly Varden and Coho Salmon displayed distinct and nonlinear flow-foraging relationships, where forage for both species consisted primarily of macroinvertebrates. During this time period, consumption maxima coincided with baseflow and the highest observed flow conditions, and consumption minima were observed at severe low-water and intermediate flow values. After salmon spawning began, forage was not significantly related to flow and consisted primarily of salmon eggs. Further, consumption rates increased overall, and foraging patterns did not appear to be affected by flow in either species. Bioenergetic simulations revealed that patterns of interannual hydrologic variation may shift Coho Salmon growth trajectories among years.

Together, our results suggest that access to marine pulse subsidy resources may depend on whether antecedent hydrologic conditions are suitable for juvenile salmonids to grow large enough to consume salmon eggs by the onset of spawning.

","language":"English","publisher":"British Ecological Society","doi":"10.1111/1365-2656.14018","usgsCitation":"Fitzgerald, K., Bellmore, J.R., Fellman, J.B., Cheng, M.L., Delbecq, C., and Falke, J.A., 2023, Stream hydrology and a pulse subsidy shape patterns of fish foraging: Journal of Animal Ecology, v. 92, no. 12, p. 2386-2398, https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2656.14018.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"2386","endPage":"2398","ipdsId":"IP-150442","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441747,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2656.14018","text":"External Repository"},{"id":430279,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -134.69532259029916,\n 58.4891103778352\n ],\n [\n -134.69532259029916,\n 58.384723457070805\n ],\n [\n -134.53360309034514,\n 58.384723457070805\n ],\n [\n -134.53360309034514,\n 58.4891103778352\n ],\n [\n -134.69532259029916,\n 58.4891103778352\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"92","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fitzgerald, Kevin","contributorId":332288,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fitzgerald","given":"Kevin","affiliations":[{"id":6752,"text":"University of Alaska Fairbanks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":903215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bellmore, J. From 2018 - 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired over 82,000 line-kilometres of airborne electromagnetic, radiometric, and magnetic data over this region to provide comprehensive and systematic information about subsurface geologic and hydrologic properties that support multiple scientific and societal interests. Most of the data were acquired on a regional grid of west-east flight lines separated by 3 - 6 kilometres; however, several high-resolution inset grids with line spacing as close as 200 m were acquired in targeted areas of interest. Approximately 8,000 line-kilometres were acquired along streams and rivers to characterise the potential for surface water-groundwater connection, and another 6,000 line-kilometres were acquired along the Mississippi and Arkansas River levees to characterise this critical infrastructure. Here, we present a summary of the data along with several examples of how they are being used to inform regional groundwater model development, inferences of groundwater salinity, identification of faults in the New Madrid seismic zone, and levee infrastructure.
","conferenceTitle":"AEM2023 8th International Airborne Electromagnetics Workshop","conferenceDate":"September 3-7, Tree-ring samples from ten spruce stumps were crossdated to develop a 149-year-long ring-width chronology. Radiocarbon wiggle-matching found that single-ring ages from the chronology were offset 28 ± 7 years older than the IntCal20 calibration curve and that the last ring of the chronology dated as 1169 to 1189 CE (781–761 cal. yr. BP) at the 95% confidence level. Bark was observed on some stumps, six samples had the same year for the last growth ring, and so this wiggle-match date is also the best estimate of the date of the penultimate great earthquake. This date is in good agreement with a date for this event in a seismo-turbidite record from Skilak Lake but not with previous dates from Bayesian models of maximum- and minimum-limiting ages from coastal salt marshes. Reanalysis of the coastal salt marsh ages with the data grouped by area, context and material found that outer wood samples from stumps at coseismic submergence sites and a Bayesian limiting age model based on just herbaceous plant ages from Turnagain Arm and the Copper River area are both consistent with our wiggle-match date. Furthermore, coseismic emergence ages from Cape Suckling and Yakataga are older than the penultimate earthquake and so likely relate to an earlier uplift event in this eastern area. The rupture extent during the penultimate great earthquake appears to have been less than in the 1964 great earthquake and the interseismic interval between these two events was 785 ± 10 years.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.qsa.2023.100142","usgsCitation":"Barclay, D.J., Haeussler, P., and Witter, R.C., 2023, Dating the penultimate great earthquake in south-central Alaska using tree-ring crossdating and radiocarbon wiggle-matching: Quaternary Science Advances, v. 13, 100142, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.qsa.2023.100142.","productDescription":"100142, 13 p.","ipdsId":"IP-158222","costCenters":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":498704,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.qsa.2023.100142","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":498618,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.97392172569602,\n              60.587785877878815\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.97392172569602,\n              56.48596044935496\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.95577716118677,\n              56.48596044935496\n            ],\n            [\n              -140.95577716118677,\n              60.587785877878815\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.97392172569602,\n              60.587785877878815\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"13","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barclay, David J 0009-0007-9629-3731","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0009-0007-9629-3731","contributorId":365136,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Barclay","given":"David","middleInitial":"J","affiliations":[{"id":87054,"text":"SUNY Cortland, Cortland, NY","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":953743,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haeussler, Peter J. 0000-0002-1503-6247","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1503-6247","contributorId":219956,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haeussler","given":"Peter J.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":953744,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Witter, Robert C. 0000-0002-1721-254X rwitter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1721-254X","contributorId":219962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Witter","given":"Robert","email":"rwitter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":953745,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

On Earth, it has been observed that most volcanism has both effusive and explosive phases, whereas on the Moon, these two types of volcanism have typically been considered separately. We hypothesize that the relationship between explosive and effusive volcanism on the Moon is similar to what is observed on the Earth, where individual eruptions can experience multiple phases rather than one type of volcanism always preceding another or occurring separately. We present observations from the Moon Mineralogy Mapper detailing compositional relationships between volcanic features in the lunar Montes Apenninus region. We evaluated whether co-located LPDs and effusive features (e.g., rilles, mare) could have erupted from the same volcanic vent or even at the same time based on their compositional similarities and stratigraphic relationships. We found that the LPDs have varied stratigraphic relationships with co-located effusive features. We identified LPDs near sinuous rilles that may be related to the formation of the rille, where explosive and effusive volcanism occurred at the same vent (e.g., Mozart Rille), and LPDs that may be unrelated to the rille (e.g., Rimae Bode and Rima Bode LPD). Our results suggest that lunar volcanism can mirror terrestrial volcanism, with explosive and effusive eruptions demonstrating more complex dynamics and relationships than previously thought. This variability suggests that the relationship between LPDs and nearby volcanic features cannot be generalized for studies on their resource potential, eruption styles, or deposit volume.

","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/2023JE007861","usgsCitation":"Pigue, L.M., Bennett, K.A., Horgan, B., and Gaddis, L., 2023, Relationship between explosive and effusive volcanism in the Montes Apenninus region of the Moon: Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, v. 128, no. 11, e2023JE007861, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.1029/2023JE007861.","productDescription":"e2023JE007861, 22 p.","ipdsId":"IP-146642","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441749,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1029/2023je007861","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":422415,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"128","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pigue, Lori M. 0000-0002-6675-6877","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6675-6877","contributorId":330994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pigue","given":"Lori","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887741,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bennett, Kristen A. 0000-0001-8105-7129","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8105-7129","contributorId":237068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bennett","given":"Kristen","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887742,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Horgan, Briony H.N.","contributorId":331456,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Horgan","given":"Briony H.N.","affiliations":[{"id":79216,"text":"Purdue University Earth Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887743,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gaddis, Lisa 0000-0001-9953-5483","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9953-5483","contributorId":330996,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gaddis","given":"Lisa","affiliations":[{"id":12445,"text":"Lunar and Planetary Institute","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887744,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

However, finding and accessing scientific knowledge can be time consuming and costly. To assist in this process, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created a series of annotated bibliographies on topics of management concern for western lands. Previously published reports introduced a methodology for preparing annotated bibliographies to facilitate integration of recent, peer-reviewed science into resource management decisions. Therefore, relevant text from those efforts is reproduced here and built on to incorporate new information. The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter “GRSG”) has been a focus of scientific investigation and management action for the past two decades. The 2015 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listing determination of “not warranted” under the Endangered Species Act was in part a result of a large-scale collaborative effort to develop strategies to conserve GRSG populations and their habitat and to reduce threats to both. New scientific information augments existing knowledge and can help inform updates or modifications to existing plans for managing GRSG and sagebrush ecosystems. However, the sheer number of scientific publications can be a challenge for managers tasked with evaluating and determining the need for potential updates to existing planning documents. To assist in this process, the USGS has reviewed and summarized the scientific literature published since January 1, 2015. Our most recent GRSG literature summary was published in 2020 (Carter and others, 2020) and included products published through October 2, 2019. Here, we consider products published between October 2, 2019, and July 21, 2022. We compiled and summarized peer-reviewed journal articles, data products, and formal technical reports (such as U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service General Technical Reports and USGS Open-File Reports) on greater sage-grouse. We first systematically searched three reference databases and three government databases using the search phrase “greater sage-grouse.” We refined the initial list of products by removing (1) duplicates, (2) publications not published as research, data products, or scientific review articles in peer-reviewed journals or as formal technical reports, and (3) products for which greater sage-grouse was not a research focus or the study did not present new data or findings about greater sage-grouse. We summarized each product using a consistent structure (background, objectives, methods, location, findings, and implications) and identified management topics addressed by each product; for example, species and population characteristics. We also identified projects that provided new geospatial data. The review process for this annotated bibliography included two initial internal colleague reviews of each summary, requesting input on each summary from an author of the original publication, and formal peer review. Our initial searches resulted in 221 total products, of which 147 met our criteria for inclusion. Across products summarized in the annotated bibliography, broad-scale habitat characteristics, behavior or demographics, site-scale habitat characteristics, habitat selection, and population estimates or targets were the most commonly addressed management topics. The online version of this bibliography, which will be available on the Science for Resource Managers tool (https://apps.usgs.gov/science-for-resource-managers), will be searchable by topic, location, and year, and will include links to each original publication. The studies compiled and summarized here may inform planning and management actions that seek to maintain and restore sagebrush landscapes and GRSG populations across the GRSG range.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20231082","usgsCitation":"Teige, E.C., Maxwell, L.M., Jordan, S.E., Rutherford, T.K., Dietrich, E.I., Samuel, E.M., Stoneburner, A.L., Kleist, N.J., Meineke, J.K., Selby, L.B., Foster, A.C., and Carter, S.K., 2023, Annotated bibliography of scientific research on greater sage-grouse published from October 2019 to July 2022 (ver. 1.1, November 2023): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2023–1082, 122 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20231082.","productDescription":"ix, 122 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-152382","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":422491,"rank":3,"type":{"id":25,"text":"Version History"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1082/versionHist.txt","size":"12.0 kB","linkFileType":{"id":2,"text":"txt"},"description":"OFR 2023-1082 version history"},{"id":422190,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1082/ofr20231082.pdf","text":"Report","size":"5.86 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2023-1082"},{"id":422189,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1082/coverthb2.jpg"},{"id":422620,"rank":6,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ofr20231082/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"OFR 2023-1082"},{"id":422537,"rank":4,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1082/images"},{"id":422538,"rank":5,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2023/1082/ofr20231082.xml"}],"edition":"Version 1.0: October 27, 2023; Version 1.1: November 13, 2023","contact":"
Director, Fort Collins Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
2150 Centre Ave., Bldg. The NOAA ET0 reanalysis is provided daily from January 1, 1980 to the near-present at a resolution of 0.5° latitude × 0.625° longitude. The reanalysis is verified against station data across southern Africa, a region presenting both significant challenges regarding hydroclimatic variability and observational quantity and quality and significant potential benefits to food-insecure populations. These data are generated from observations from the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) network. We further verified globally against spatially distributed ET0 derived from two reanalyses–the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) and Princeton Global Forcing (PGF)–and these verifications produced similar results, yet demonstrated wide regional and seasonal differences. We also present cases that verify the operational applicability of the reanalysis in long-established drought, famine, crop- and pastoral-stress metrics, and in predictability assessments of drought In this study, we tested the hypothesis that metabolic rate varies with growth history of age-1 largemouth bass Micropterus nigricans Cuvier, 1828. Two groups of fish were fed alternating maintenance or ad libitum rations of fathead minnow Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, 1820, so that over a 9-week period, initial and ending size of fish was similar. After 9 weeks, oxygen consumption was measured using static, closed respirometry. Although final body weight was similar between the two groups (means, 104–108 g), specific oxygen consumption for fish fed maintenance rations (0.094 mg O2 g−2 h−1) was 38% less than that measured for fish fed ad libitum (0.152 mg O2 g−2 h−1). Bioenergetics estimates of food consumption were similar to observed values for fish fed ad libitum (∼7% error), but for fish fed maintenance rations, the model overestimated food consumption by 65%. By accounting for changes in metabolic rate owing to reduced feeding, error in model estimates of food consumption was reduced. These findings shed new insight into factors associated with consumption-dependent error in bioenergetics models and highlight the importance of feeding history on metabolic rate of fish. This is a challenging task for marine species, and in sea turtles a combination of stable isotope analysis (SIA) and satellite telemetry has been increasingly used. The Northwest Atlantic (NWA) loggerhead (Caretta caretta) Regional Management Unit, one of the largest sea turtle populations in the world, provides an excellent opportunity to investigate key biological patterns as well as methodological aspects related to the use of stable isotopes to infer spatial distribution of turtles in foraging areas. We provide the first comprehensive assessment of the annual distribution of NWA adult female loggerheads among foraging areas and investigate the efficacy of various analytical approaches as well as the effect of sample size in these types of studies. A total of 5168 individual females were sampled from seven Management Units (MUs) between 2013-2018. We provide the first estimate of the proportion of females originating from each MU that uses each foraging area and show how this proportion varies over time. We also estimate the relative importance (in terms of number of turtles) of each foraging area to the overall loggerhead breeding aggregation nesting in Florida and in the NWA for each year of the study. The foraging area used by reproductively active females differs considerably across MUs. One of these, the Subtropical NWA, is by far the most important foraging area in terms of both number of individuals and genetic diversity, and therefore this region may be considered as a conservation priority. Through simulations, we show that limited sizes of sample groups (unknowns; training; priors) may result in false geographic differentiation and consequently mislead interpretations. We provide thresholds and methodological recommendations for future studies. This study establishes a fundamental baseline for monitoring the annual contribution of foraging area to a terrestrial-based breeding aggregation of a marine animal in a cost-effective way. This type of monitoring allows for early detection of changes in foraging distributions—a possible effect of climate change on marine ecosystems or of area-specific anthropogenic threats.

","language":"English","publisher":"Frontiers","doi":"10.3389/fmars.2023.1189661","usgsCitation":"Ceriani, S.A., Murasko, S., Addison, D.S., Anderson, D., Curry, G., Desjardin, N.A., The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board, is evaluating groundwater resources near areas of oil and gas development in California, including (1) the location of groundwater resources near oil fields; (2) the proximity of oil and gas operations to groundwater, and the geologic materials between them; (3) evidence (or lack of evidence) of fluids from oil and gas sources in groundwater; and (4) the pathways or processes responsible when fluids from oil and gas sources are present in groundwater (U.S. Geological Survey, 2022a). As part of this evaluation, the USGS installed a multiple-well monitoring site near the administrative boundary of the Elk Hills Oil Field in the southern San Joaquin Valley about 6 miles northeast of Taft, California (California Department of Water Resources, 2020; fig. 1). Data collected at the Elk Hills multiple-well monitoring site (ELKH) provide information about the geology, hydrology, geophysical properties, and water quality of the aquifer system, thus enhancing the understanding of relations between adjacent groundwater and the Elk Hills Oil Field in an area where groundwater data are limited, particularly at different depths in the aquifer. These berms would be used to create living shorelines, defined as shorelines that “connect the land and water to stabilize the shoreline, reduce erosion, and provide ecosystem services, like [maintaining] valuable habitat, that enhances coastal resilience.” Bathymetric surveys show variability in the lagoon depth within the study area and clearly delineate the relatively shallow bay from the deeper Tompkins Channel. There were seasonal patterns in daily mean tidal water-surface elevations, with higher mean tides in the fall and spring and lower mean tides in the winter and summer. Seasonal differences in mean tidal water-surface elevations were primarily caused by astronomical forces. Shorter-term (daily and weekly) variations in tidal water-surface elevations were produced by meteorological forcing resulting from high- and low-pressure systems, the passage of fronts, local storms, and tropical storms. The tide driven currents typically were toward the north-northwest during flood tide or toward the south-southeast during ebb tide, roughly parallel to the general South Padre Island shoreline orientation. Prevailing water current velocity (current speed and direction) indicates that there usually is a net inflow into the lower Laguna Madre from the Gulf of Mexico and a net outflow at locations north of the study area. The overall seagrass density was generally lowest in the northeast section of the transect. Areas of low seagrass density were also most commonly observed close to the channel edge of the transect. Overall, Syringodium filiforme was considerably more abundant than Thalassia testudinum and Halodule wrightii. Amphipods from the families Ampithoidae and Melitidae were the most abundant benthic invertebrates, followed by gastropods in the family Calyptraeidae. Higher abundances of benthic invertebrates were recorded at sites farther away from Tompkins Channel than at sites closer to it, perhaps because of the sensitivity of these organisms to disturbances caused by erosional forces in the channel. Changes in water-quality measured during a 2-day survey were consistent with patterns observed in prior studies, indicating biological processes likely play an important role in the physicochemical environment of the study area. Collectively, the data provide baseline information that can be used as reference conditions prior to any shoreline enhancement activities in the lower Laguna Madre.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20235111","issn":"2328-0328","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with A monitoring network was created to quantify the SSL from the City of Roanoke, Virginia, USA (CoR), to the Roanoke River and Tinker Creek and help guide TMDL assessment and implementation. Suspended-sediment concentrations were estimated between 2020 and 2022 from high-frequency turbidity data using surrogate linear-regression models. Sixty-one percent of the total three-year SSL resulted from five large storm events. The average suspended-sediment yield from the CoR (58.1 metric tons/km2/year) was similar to other urban watersheds in the Eastern United States; however, the yield was nearly five times larger than the TMDL allocation (12.2 metric tons/km2/year). The TMDL allocated load was modeled based on a predominantly forested reference watershed and may not be a practical target for highly impervious watersheds within the CoR. The TMDL model used daily input data which likely does not capture the full range of SSLs during storm events, particularly from flashy urban streams. Eleven airport ice control products had TP concentrations from 1–807 mg L–1 in liquid formulas, while solid pavement deicer had a TP concentration of 805 mg kg–1. Product application data, formula TP concentrations, and surface water sampling results were used to estimate TP concentration and loading contributions from these ice control products to receiving streams. Airport ice control products were found to contribute to TP in 84% of the water samples collected at downstream sites during deicing events, and TP concentrations at those sites exceeded aquatic life benchmarks in 70% of samples collected during deicing. A receiving stream 6 km downstream had TP attributed to airport ice control sources in 78% of the samples. TP loadings at an upstream site and the receiving stream site were greatest during the largest runoff events as is typical in urban runoff, but this pattern was not always followed at airport outfall sites due to the influence of TP in deicer products. Products analyzed in this study are used at airports across the United States and abroad, and findings suggest that airport deicers could represent a previously unrecognized source of phosphorus to adjacent waterways.

","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/acs.est.3c03417","usgsCitation":"Stefaniak, O.M., Corsi, S., Rutter, T., and Failey, G.G., 2023, Airport deicers: An unrecognized source of phosphorus loading in receiving waters: Environmental Science and Technology, v. 57, no. 44, p. 17051-17060, https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.3c03417.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"17051","endPage":"17060","ipdsId":"IP-151889","costCenters":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441763,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.3c03417","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":430564,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","city":"Milwaukee","otherGeospatial":"Mitchell International Airport","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.96818787835865,\n              42.99613017336026\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.96818787835865,\n              42.88855126553827\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.84579156385327,\n              42.88855126553827\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.84579156385327,\n              42.99613017336026\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.96818787835865,\n              42.99613017336026\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"57","issue":"44","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-26","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stefaniak, Owen M. 0000-0001-5394-8338 ostefaniak@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5394-8338","contributorId":271143,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stefaniak","given":"Owen","email":"ostefaniak@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":905009,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Corsi, Steven R. 0000-0003-0583-5536 srcorsi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0583-5536","contributorId":172002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corsi","given":"Steven R.","email":"srcorsi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":905010,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rutter, Troy D. 0000-0001-5130-204X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5130-204X","contributorId":306215,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rutter","given":"Troy D.","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":905011,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Failey, Greg G.","contributorId":339739,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Failey","given":"Greg","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":81398,"text":"Mitchell International Airport","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":905012,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The Santa Ana sucker (Pantosteus santaanae, syn. Catostomus santaanae) and arroyo chub (Gila orcuttii) are two native species listed in the Upper Santa Ana Habitat Conservation Plan, which aims to balance water supply needs with the ecological needs of native fauna. Consequently, an understanding of the habitat needs of these fishes will play a crucial role in achieving the goals outlined by the conservation plan. We used fish presence during snorkel surveys with habitat availability surveys to quantify habitat selection by both native fish species within a resource selection function analytical framework. We found that both species selected habitat near structures that could serve as refugia from potential predators. In addition, Santa Ana sucker selected habitats with high gravel and cobble substrate composition, presumably to fulfill complementary habitat needs such as foraging and spawning. Our results suggest that habitat alterations due to water management infrastructure and an increasing population size of nonnative predators may also affect native fish habitat selection in the Santa Ana River.
","language":"English","publisher":"BioOne","doi":"10.1894/0038-4909-67.3.192","usgsCitation":"Huntsman, B., Brown, L.R., May, J., Palenscar, K., Russell, K., Dyer, H., Wulff, M.L., Mills, B., and Jones, C., 2023, Microhabitat use of native Santa Ana sucker and arroyo chub in an effluent-dominated southern California stream: Southwestern Naturalist, v. 67, no. 3, p. 192-204, https://doi.org/10.1894/0038-4909-67.3.192.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"192","endPage":"204","ipdsId":"IP-140003","costCenters":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":423135,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.48718456308515,\n              34.50109468962208\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48718456308515,\n              33.24233286033618\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.24621776621026,\n              33.24233286033618\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.24621776621026,\n              34.50109468962208\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.48718456308515,\n              34.50109468962208\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"67","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Huntsman, Brock 0000-0003-4090-1949","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4090-1949","contributorId":223101,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Huntsman","given":"Brock","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":889395,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brown, Larry R. 0000-0001-6702-4531","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6702-4531","contributorId":269405,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Brown","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":55970,"text":"USGS CAWSC (not in system - posthumous)","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889396,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"May, Jason 0000-0002-5699-2112","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5699-2112","contributorId":224991,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"May","given":"Jason","affiliations":[{"id":41015,"text":"Deceased (ex-USGS)","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889397,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Palenscar, Kai","contributorId":297131,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Palenscar","given":"Kai","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":64298,"text":"San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889398,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Russell, Kerwin","contributorId":297133,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Russell","given":"Kerwin","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":64299,"text":"Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889399,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Dyer, Heather","contributorId":297134,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Dyer","given":"Heather","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":64298,"text":"San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889400,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Wulff, Marissa L. 0000-0003-0121-9066","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0121-9066","contributorId":229534,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wulff","given":"Marissa","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":889401,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Mills, Brett","contributorId":297135,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Mills","given":"Brett","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":64299,"text":"Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889402,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Jones, Chris","contributorId":297132,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jones","given":"Chris","affiliations":[{"id":64298,"text":"San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":889403,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9}]}}

While non-ski, mountain tourism accounts for almost one fifth of tourism worldwide, there is a dearth of research on tourists’ perceptions of climate change impacts and their effects on tourism demand in these areas. This study, conducted at the ecotourism destination of the Pueblos Mancomunados in the Sierra Norte Mountains of southern Mexico, helps to fill that gap by identifying important tourist decision factors and determining how tourists’ decisions to visit may change under different climatic conditions. Using on-site intercept survey research methodology involving 188 tourists, we found that some climate change scenarios affect tourists’ perceptions of the desirability of visiting nature-based tourism sites. This report synthesizes science information about the potential effects of noise from oil and gas development on North American ungulates and small mammals, including rodents and leporids. We conducted a structured search of published scientific literature to find information about noise levels produced during oil and gas development, methods for analyzing sound propagation, the effects of noise on ungulates and small mammals, and measures to reduce noise emissions. We organized the sections of this synthesis to align with standard elements of NEPA analyses. We found that oil and gas development is a common source of human-caused noise on public lands and includes noise sources such as heavy construction and drilling machinery, long-term production machinery, truck traffic, and aircraft. Common techniques for predicting potential noise include field data collection using a sound level meter, inference from previously published data, and sound propagation modeling. A substantial body of research shows that human-caused noise can affect wildlife health and behavior, with variation in sensitivity to noise among species. Studies have shown consistent, detectable effects of noise on ungulates, but the amount of literature on ungulates is very small, and additional research could improve our understanding of differences in effects among species, seasons, and individual indicators of fitness. Several species of small mammals are dependent on audible signals for predator detection and communication, and noise has been shown to affect their vigilance and foraging behavior. However, other studies have documented no effects to rodents in noisy areas, and the effects of noise on small mammals may differ by species and study system. Techniques suggested in the literature for reducing noise emissions include sound barriers, seasonal and daily timing restrictions, traffic control measures, and siting infrastructure to take advantage of natural sound barriers. Public land managers can use this report by incorporating it by reference in NEPA documentation, as supplemental information, or as a general reference for literature about the effects of noise from oil and gas development on ungulates and small mammals.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20235114","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Rutherford, T.K., Maxwell, L.M., Kleist, N.J., Teige, E.C., Lehrter, R.J., Gilbert, M.A., Wood, D.J.A., Johnston, A.N., Mengelt, C., Tull, J.C., Haby, T.S., and Carter, S.K., 2023, Effects of noise from oil and gas development on ungulates and small mammals—A science synthesis to inform National Environmental Policy Act analyses (ver. 1.1, July 2024): U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2023–5114, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20235114.","productDescription":"x, 44 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-154194","costCenters":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":431306,"rank":4,"type":{"id":34,"text":"Image Folder"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5114/images"},{"id":422101,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5114/sir20235114.pdf","text":"Report","size":"13.8 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"SIR 2023-5114"},{"id":422100,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5114/coverthb2.jpg"},{"id":431017,"rank":3,"type":{"id":25,"text":"Version History"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5114/version_Hist.txt","size":"8.00 KB","linkFileType":{"id":2,"text":"txt"},"description":"SIR 2023-511version history"},{"id":431307,"rank":5,"type":{"id":31,"text":"Publication XML"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2023/5114/sir20235114.xml"},{"id":431308,"rank":6,"type":{"id":39,"text":"HTML Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/sir20235114/full","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"SIR 2023-5114"}],"edition":"Version 1.0: October 2023; Version 1.1: July 2024","contact":"
Director, Fort Collins Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
2150 Centre Ave., Bldg. Decisions about how many of each species to stock require an understanding of how to maintain a sustainable balance of predators (salmonine species) to prey (alewife) in the lake. The current models used to make these decisions can estimate the ratio of Chinook salmon to alewife in the lake. However, the Lake Michigan Committee’s new stocking strategy aims to incorporate the other salmonine species into this predator-prey ratio. We used structured decision making to evaluate potential stocking strategies. We worked with fishery stakeholders and members of the Lake Michigan Committee, conducted participatory modeling to forecast outcomes of stocking scenarios using updated information on fish movement and feeding, and evaluated the risk of these stocking strategies. Most of the stocking practices we evaluated resulted in a high risk of large declines in alewife abundance, negatively affecting future salmon fisheries. The forecasts were substantially more pessimistic than those resulting from a similar analysis conducted a decade earlier, apparently due to more recent alewife assessments indicating lower alewife productivity (recruits per spawner). Alewife recruitment dynamics is an area of substantial uncertainty, with apparently large consequences for management; decision makers on Lake Michigan would benefit from greater understanding of alewife recruitment dynamics to reduce this uncertainty when accounting for risks.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Robinson, K.F., Jones, Here, we highlight their complex formation and evolution through an exemplary suite of Quaternary debris-flow alluvial fans emanating from the western range front of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in south-central Colorado, USA. To evaluate the constructive and modifying processes that produce fan form and the associated sedimentary signatures, we applied a combined geomorphologic and sedimentologic approach using sedimentary facies analysis, soils mapping, high-resolution topographic data, and luminescence geochronology to document timing of fan construction and modification. We explored two subsets of fans in the study area: a southern set sourced from the extensively glaciated drainages of the Blanca Peak massif, and a northern set from the unglaciated drainages south of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Both sets of fans have: (1) active and successively abandoned surfaces that show evolving degradation of primary features through modification by secondary processes, (2) associated facies that display distinct characteristics representative of primary depositional and secondary modifying sedimentary processes, and (3) evidence of primary debris flow with subsequent modification by secondary processes. We found that surface geomorphology and facies assemblages in exposed alluvial-fan deposits represent sediment transport processes on both active and abandoned lobes. The link between fan surface morphologies and the sedimentary facies of their deposits provides a basis for an evolutionary process–based interpretation of debris-flow alluvial-fan geomorphology and provides a better understanding of complexities in buried paleosurfaces (intraformational progressive unconformities), surficial deformation, and landform development as recorded in debris-flow fan deposits in the sedimentary record.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/2023.2561(01)","usgsCitation":"Nicovich, S., Schmitt, J., Gray, H., Klinger, R.E., and Mahan, S.A., 2023, Construction and modification of debris-flow alluvial fans as captured in the geomorphic and sedimentary record: Examples from the western Sangre de Cristo Mountains, south-central Colorado: Geological Society of America Special Papers , v. 561, 48 p., https://doi.org/10.1130/2023.2561(01).","productDescription":"48 p.","ipdsId":"IP-144536","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441768,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1130/2023.2561(01)","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435138,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P96162BF","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Data Release for Luminescence: Construction and modification of debris-flow alluvial fans as captured in the geomorphic and sedimentary record: examples from the western Sangre de Cristo Mountains, south-central Colorado"},{"id":422521,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Sangre de Cristo Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -107.01583616224015,\n              38.75219123538736\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.01583616224015,\n              37.01816107244015\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.81857053724035,\n              37.01816107244015\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.81857053724035,\n              38.75219123538736\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.01583616224015,\n              38.75219123538736\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"561","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nicovich, Sylvia","contributorId":210054,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Nicovich","given":"Sylvia","affiliations":[{"id":38060,"text":"Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887922,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schmitt, James","contributorId":256655,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schmitt","given":"James","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":38060,"text":"Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887923,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gray, Harrison J. 0000-0002-4555-7473","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4555-7473","contributorId":207019,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gray","given":"Harrison J.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887924,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Klinger, Ralph E.","contributorId":172929,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Klinger","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":6736,"text":"Bureau of Reclamation","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887925,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Mahan, Shannon A. 0000-0001-5214-7774 smahan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5214-7774","contributorId":147159,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mahan","given":"Shannon","email":"smahan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887926,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) is nonetheless having an unprecedented impact in the region. Whereas numerous studies over the last decade have worked to characterize this novel pathogen and its impacts on coral populations, few have quantified its functional effects on reef ecosystems. Of particular importance is how SCTLD may be impacting the essential reef-accretion process and the myriad ecosystem services it supports. Here, we evaluated the impact of SCTLD on reef-accretion potential by estimating carbonate budgets and taxon-level carbonate production at 43 sites throughout the Florida Keys from 2016−2022. Average regional reef-accretion potential declined from an already low, but positive rate of 0.30 ± 0.16 mm y-1 (mean ± standard error) in 2016 before the disease was first observed, to a state of accretionary stasis (0.08 ± 0.12 mm y-1) by 2022. This 70% relative decline in reef-accretion potential was driven by the loss of reef-building corals, with significant decreases in carbonate production by massive taxa including Colpophyllia natans, Montastraea cavernosa, Pseudodiploria strigosa, Orbicella spp., and Siderastrea siderea, and increasing contributions from less susceptible, weedy taxa including Millepora spp., Agaricia spp., and Porites astreoides. In general, changes in taxon-level carbonate production following the SCTLD outbreak mirror long-term shifts in reef assemblages in response to previous stressors. One striking exception, however, is S. siderea, which had become increasingly dominant in recent decades, but declined significantly in response to SCTLD. Overall, by further decimating the already depauperate reef-building coral populations in the Florida Keys, SCTLD has caused a functionally significant shift in the composition of Florida’s coral-reef assemblages and accelerated the loss of regional reef-building capacity. The dire impacts of the disease in south Florida may serve as an early warning that the persistence of the invaluable ecological and socioeconomic functions coral reefs provide will be increasingly threatened throughout the western Atlantic in the aftermath of SCTLD.

","language":"English","publisher":"Frontiers","doi":"10.3389/fmars.2023.1276400","usgsCitation":"Toth, L., Courtney, T.A., Colella, M.A., and Ruzicka, R.R., 2023, Stony coral tissue loss disease accelerated shifts in coral composition and declines in reef accretion potential in the Florida Keys: Frontiers in Marine Science, v. 10, 1276400, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2023.1276400.","productDescription":"1276400, 12 p.","ipdsId":"IP-155298","costCenters":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441769,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2023.1276400","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":423041,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Florida Keys","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -83.35985569213379,\n              26.309075169485908\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.35985569213379,\n              24.022282754573467\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.60253147338369,\n              24.022282754573467\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.60253147338369,\n              26.309075169485908\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.35985569213379,\n              26.309075169485908\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Toth, Lauren T. 0000-0002-2568-802X ltoth@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2568-802X","contributorId":181748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Toth","given":"Lauren","email":"ltoth@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":888985,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Courtney, Travis A.","contributorId":218225,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Courtney","given":"Travis","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":888986,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Colella, Michael A.","contributorId":139979,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Colella","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":13340,"text":"Fish & Wildlife Research Institute, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888987,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ruzicka, Robert R.","contributorId":204569,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ruzicka","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":12556,"text":"Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}
