Ground-water withdrawals calculated for 1975 totaled about 16,000 acre-feet (2.0 x107 cubic meters) of pumped ground water and 12,000 acre-feet (1.5x107 cubic meters) of ground water extracted through flowing wells. The ground water is contained in alluvial and basalt aquifers comprised of gravel, sand, and basalt interbedded with fine-grained silt and clay. Nineteen shallow test holes were drilled and cased to define the extent and effectiveness of confining layers in the southern part of the valley. Water-level fluctuations monitored in about 75 wells showed seasonal variations of 40 feet (12 meters) in the northern part of the area and less than 5 feet (1.5 meters) in some wells in the southern part of the area. Numerous stream-discharge measurements were made to define areal and temporal distribution of groundwater discharge. Most of the flow in Silver Creek rises from springs discharging from the shallow aquifer near the edge of the confining beds. Only a small amount of discharge to the creek is attributable to upward movement of water through the confining beds. Discharge from the artesian aquifer near Stanton Crossing may contribute a significant portion of the spring flow which feeds the Big Wood River. Seasonal fluctuations in spring discharges are directly related to fluctuations in ground-water levels. Although losses from Silver Creek downstream from the confining beds were documented during various times of the year, losses were relatively small. A deposit of fine-grained sediments near Picabo effectively perches Silver Creek above the deep basalt aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77456","usgsCitation":"Moreland, J.A., 1977, Ground water-surface water relations in the Silver Creek area, Blaine County, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-456, Report: 85 p.; 5 Plates: 36.36 x 25.49 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77456.","productDescription":"Report: 85 p.; 5 Plates: 36.36 x 25.49 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":38261,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38264,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":413979,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14448.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38263,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38262,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143816,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38259,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38260,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0456/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","county":"Blaine County","otherGeospatial":"Silver Creek area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.3311,\n              43.481\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3311,\n              43.272\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.033,\n              43.272\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.033,\n              43.481\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3311,\n              43.481\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d694","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moreland, Joe A.","contributorId":48171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moreland","given":"Joe","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161331,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

They are listed by the quadrangles (scale 1:250,000) into which Alaska has been subdivided for topographic mapping (p. 3). As these three agencies also issued reports and maps on other subjects, the following lists are selected in the sense that such documents are not included. Most of the listed reports and maps bear a 1976 imprint date; a few with a 1975 imprint date actually were not delivered until 1976. Also included are a few that I overlooked when I prepared a similar index of reports and maps issued in 1975.

Reports that deal with regional tectonic hypotheses, regional syntheses, Alaska as a whole, or with areas that can not be identified with a specific quadrangle are listed under Alaska - General, as are statistical presentations, indexes, and the like. Reports and maps that deal with offshore areas not within quadrangle boundaries are listed under Offshore Areas. The Alaska - General and Offshore Areas lists appear before the alphabetically arranged quadrangle listings.

This index is intended to bring up to date the other indexes of this series, which The well penetrated four sand and gravel strata of low water-yielding capacity and extended 37 ft into metamorphic bedrock. Earth water-bearing stratum was pumped for several hours, and the best aquifer yield was found to be 1.7 gal/min/ft of drawdown. Synthesized flood discharges derived through use of long-term (60-70 year) rainfall and evaporation data, provide a more representative time base than do short-term (5-15 year) discharge records obtained by conventional stream gaging techniques. The rainfall, discharge, and evaporation data for use with rainfall-runoff models are stored in the Unit and Daily Values Files. Any of these data which were collected during the current or immediately preceding water year are stored on direct access, online disk files. Older data are stored in sequential files on magnetic tapes. Both the disks and tapes contain short-term data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for calibration of models and long-term data for use in synthesis of long-term flood records. Information in this report provides guidelines for the assembly, storage, and retrieval of data needed to use these models, and also provides description and documentation of computer programs for model calibration and flood-record synthesis. The possibility of both horizontal and vertical ground movement--subsidence, fissuring, growth faulting--in the Gulf Coast region, caused by the withdrawal of large volumes of deep formation fluids, is of major concern.

Although widespread subsidence has resulted from intensive pumping of ground water, huge withdrawals from shallow oil and gas fields, and mining of sulfur and salt, little information is available on possible subsidence caused by deep fluid extractions. As far as is known, none of the major fields in the Gulf Coast region has subsided appreciably as a result of deep oil and gas production. Of special concern in this study are field evidence of or specific research regarding subsidence directly related to geopressured-fluid withdrawals. If deep reservoirs have the same general stress-strain characteristics as shallower reservoirs, appreciable subsidence could accompany major extraction of deep fluid.

A reconnaissance of the type and extent of background data available for such a subsidence appraisal was made as a first step in investigating the possibility of land subsidence associated with the exploitation of geopressured reservoirs in the Gulf Coast. This study was limited to the Texas Gulf Coast south of the landward boundary of Miocene deposits. Visits were made to offices of Federal and State agencies and industries, to determine the type and extent of data available for interpreting subsidence potential in the Texas Gulf Coast.

This report summarizes the findings of this reconnaissance investigation, including the names and agencies of those contacted and the nature and extent of pertinent data available. Depths are generally accurate to the nearest foot.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77132","usgsCitation":"Rush, F.E., 1977, Subsurface-temperature data for some wells in western Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-132, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77132.","productDescription":"36 p.","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":430848,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0132/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144336,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0132/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114.08469644225438,\n 41.996112389904084\n ],\n [\n -114.08469644225438,\n 36.955382503687645\n ],\n [\n -108.9931100003049,\n 36.955382503687645\n ],\n [\n -108.9931100003049,\n 41.996112389904084\n ],\n [\n -114.08469644225438,\n 41.996112389904084\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db6996e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rush, F. The predominant form of dissolved nitrogen was nitrate. Nitrate concentrations (as N) in the upper glacial aquifer in both counties ranged from 0 to 20 milligrams per liter (mg/L) ; those in the Magothy aquifer ranged from 0 to 20 mg/L but were generally much lower in Suffolk County than in Nassau County. Nitrate concentrations (as N) decreased with depth in both counties; below 400 feet, concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.2 mg/L. \r\n\r\nNitrate concentrations (as N) of streams ranged from 0 to ii mg/L, which is an indication of the general quality of water in much of the upper glacial aquifer, the source of most of the streamflow. Generally, concentrations of total nitrogen in streams draining the sewered area of Nassau County were lower than those in streams draining the unsewered area. Median concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen (as N) were 1.3 mg/L for the sewered area and 7.5 mg/L for the unsewered area. About 5,500 pounds of nitrate (as N) was estimated to be discharged daily in surface flow to tidewater from Nassau and Suffolk Counties.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77433","usgsCitation":"Katz, B.G., Ragone, S.E., and Harr, C.A., 1977, Nitrogen in water in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Long Island, New York, in 1971: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-433, 46 leaves :maps (some fold. in envelope) ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77433.","productDescription":"46 leaves :maps (some fold. in envelope) ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141242,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37493,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37494,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37495,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37496,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37497,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697288","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Katz, Brian G. bkatz@usgs.gov","contributorId":1093,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Katz","given":"Brian","email":"bkatz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":160227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ragone, Stephen E.","contributorId":74374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ragone","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160229,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Harr, C. The .model was calibrated under steady-state conditions to simulate the September 1975 potentiometric surface. Under one development plan, existing phosphate mines in Polk County would continue to withdraw ground water at 1975 rates, until phased out as the ore is depleted; no new mines would be introduced. Preliminary results indicate that under this plan, maximum simulated recovery of the potentiometric surface is 11.9 feet by 1985 and 36.5 feet by 2000. Under an alternative plan, all proposed mines in Polk, Hardee, DeSoto, Hillsborough and Manatee Counties would begin operations: in addition to the continuation and phasing out of existing mines. Preliminary results indicate that the potentiometric surface would generally recover in Polk County and decline elsewhere in the modeled area. Maximum simulated recovery is 4.5 feet by 1985 and 29.6 feet by 2000; maximum simulated drawdown is 15.1 feet by 1985 and feet by 2000. Streamflow in the drainages tributary to Lake Mead is meager and extremely variable. Ground water is derived from two principal sources: (1) infiltration into permeable rocks near Lake Mead and (2) ground-water underflow in the basins that drain to the lake.

The volume of ground water derived from Lake Mead is much greater than that derived from the basins. In terms of potential groundwater development the rocks saturated by lake water probably extend less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from the lake, whereas the basins that contribute underflow to the lake are of much larger areal extent. The most favorable sites for ground-water development are Grapevine Mesa, Sandy Point, Hualapai Wash, and the area near and south of Temple Bar; the permeable rocks include the conglomerate facies of the Muddy Creek Formation, the older alluvium, and the Chemehuevi Formation. The least favorable areas for ground-water development are those underlain by the mudstone facies of the Muddy Creek Formation. Seven sites are recommended for future ground-water development. S. Geological Survey for 1977. Successful completion of these goals will aid the Nation in the years ahead because proper usage of coal resource data may lessen economic displacements resulting from the energy shortage.

This report is concerned only with one mineral fuel -- coal -- and only with coal resource investigations in the Geologic Division of the U. S. Geological Survey. Other divisions involved with coal or coal-related work are the Conservation, Water Resources, and Topographic Divisions. It is one of a series of reports on the energy resource studies conducted by the Geological Survey that provide a public record of the objectives, activities, and accomplishments of these programs. Similar reports have been prepared on oil and gas, oil shale, uranium, thorium, and energy-related industrial minerals.

This report includes descriptions of the program, each sub-element of the program, individual projects, and a selected list of program publications from 1970-76. It also describes how the program is responsive to Presidential pronouncements and Congressional mandates. The program is cooperative with several Federal bureaus, many state agencies, universities, and industry. This coordination assures that the program supplements the work of these interested groups and is not duplicative.

A scientific program such as the coal resource investigations is difficult for the non-involved person to understand solely from the existing reports on various studies made in the program. This report provides an explanation that the scientist, decision maker, personnel of other government agencies, and the layman can use to relate various activities and to gain a better understanding of the relation of coal to the Nation's requirements for energy and of the importance of a carefully planned program on this energy resource.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77763","usgsCitation":"1977, National coal resource investigations of the United States Geological Survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-763, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77763.","productDescription":"53 p.","numberOfPages":"61","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":346198,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0763/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143806,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0763/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6983fc","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Wood, Gordon H. Surface morphology and internal characteristics of glacial and glaciofluvial erosional and depositional features were examined and mapped in detail in the Kent and Ellsworth, Connecticut, USGS 7? minute quadrangles, and by reconnaissance in the surrounding quadrangles. This study contributes to the expanding detailed knowledge of glaciation and geomorphology in western New England and eastern New York state. \r\n\r\nIce along the lateral east margin of the southward-waxing, Wisconsin-age, Hudson-Champlain Valley ice lobe successively overran ridges trending northeast-to-southwest. Late Wisconsin ice flow was consistently toward the southeast in the study area. Glacial erosion on the upland surfaces was weak, and several early or pre-Wisconsin meltwater channels persist, which evidence little late Wisconsin glacial or glaciofluvial modification. Deeply weathered rock has been locally preserved beneath unweathered till. \r\n\r\nTill deposits are generally thin, averaging from 10 to 15 feet in thickness, but till deposits exceeding 200 feet in thickness have been observed. Direct evidence for two or more cycles of till deposition is lacking, although multiple glaciations can be inferred from drainage derangement of the Housatonic River and from anomalies in configuration of old, upland melt-water channels which were re-occupied and eroded by melt water during subsequent deglaciations. \r\n\r\nThe orientation of ridges and the local terrain relief exerted minor control on ice flow during waxing phases of glaciation. Local relief and ridges which were oriented transverse to ice flow became the dominant control factors for ice flow during late phases of deglaciation and ultimately initiated marginal stagnation zones. \r\n\r\nLate Wisconsin deglaciation evolved in three stages. First, the active ice margin receded rapidly northwestward across, and almost transverse to, the upland ridge crests in response to factors of both backwasting and downwasting. Second, local terrain relief restricted active ice flow, initiated stagnation, diverted melt-water flow and controlled deposition of small active ice-marginal deposits on the northwest slopes of ridges. Third, melting and thinning of stagnant ice tongues in valleys with ice surfaces which were low gradient and southward-sloping caused rapid northward recession of the stagnant ice margin. \r\n\r\nSequences of related outwash deposits have been correlated with inferred ice-marginal, recessional positions. In this region, the zone of stagnant ice distal to active ice ranged from 6 to 15 miles in average width. \r\n\r\nLacustrine sediments accumulated as stagnant ice blocks melted in isolated basins and other depressions where through-flowing melt-water drainage was restricted or absent. The paucity of ice-contact and outwash deposits in the isolated basins indicates that little entrained debris was present in the stagnant ice. Prograding outwash along the Housatonic River and other major drainage routes infilled glacially overdeepened \r\nunderlying lacustrine sediments sand and gravel. rock basins and buried beneath upward-coarsening \r\n\r\nUpland bogs, which have developed postglacially, contain as much as 22 feet of organic material mixed with silt and clay. An age of 12,750 ? 230 years B.P. was determined for materials immediately above three feet of older organic-rich clay layers. This dated material correlates with the upper part of the pollen T zone reported elsewhere in Connecticut and New York.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77545","usgsCitation":"Kelley, G.C., 1977, Late Pleistocene and Recent geology of the Housatonic River region in northwestern Connecticut: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-545, [12], 222 leaves :ill., maps, plates (fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (222 p., 9 sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77545.","productDescription":"[12], 222 leaves :ill., maps, plates (fold. in envelope) ;28 cm.; (222 p., 9 sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142786,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37540,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37541,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37542,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37543,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37544,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37545,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37546,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37547,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0545/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8b71","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kelley, George C.","contributorId":51294,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kelley","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160283,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
