The injection system is described. Data include injection rates, volumes, and pressures; water-level data at three monitor wells and a standby injection well, and field and laboratory analyses of water samples from four wells. Hydraulic and geochemical effects of the waste-injection system at the plant as of December 31, 1976, have been detected only in the injection zone, the lower limestone of the Floridan aquifer. Increased pressures are evident at the three wells used to monitor the injection zone. Geochemical changes have been noted only at the deep-test monitor well closest to the injection well. The digital model was calibrated by comparing observed (March 1974 and May 1975) and computed potentiometric heads. A good comparison was obtained by adjusting leakance and transmissivity. Differences between the computed and measured potentiometric surface were generally less than 3 feet, with a maximum error of 15 feet. The calibrated model may be used as a predictive tool. For example, the model could be used to evaluate the regional effects of increased ground-water withdrawal on the Florida aquifer. The river and its two principal tributaries, North Prong Alafia River and South Prong Alafia River, drain an area of 420 sq mi of predominantly rural land. However, near the coast, urban residential developments are increasing. The flood plain of the river is subject to flooding, particularly during large regional storms. Peak-discharge frequencies have been determined for data available at two gaging stations in the basin. The flood profiles for peak discharges of recurrence intervals of 2.33, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 years have been determined using the step-backwater method. These profiles can be used in conjunction with topographic maps to delineate the area of flooding. Flood profiles were not determined for the tidally affected area near the mouth of the river. Flood marks were located that can be associated with the 1960 flood which occurred when Hurricane Donna passed over the area. This slope must be of sufficient magnitude to be accuratly measured with available stage measuring devices. On highly regulated streams, this slope approaches zero during periods of low flow and accurate measurement is difficult. Methods are described to calibrate multipurpose regulating control structures to more accurately compute streamflow records on highly-regulated streams. Hydraulic theory, assuming steady, uniform flow during a computational interval, is described for five different types of flow control. The controls are: Tainter gates, hydraulic turbines, fixed spillways, navigation locks, and crest gates. Detailed calibration procedures are described for the five different controls as well as for several flow regimes for some of the controls. The instrumentation package and computer programs necessary to collect and process the field data are discussed. Two typical calibration procedures and measurement data are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the methods. Samples were collected from the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, Mississippi River at Southwest Pass, Mississippi River at New Orleans, Bayou Rigaud near Grand Isle, Barataria Bay and Waterway, Bayou La Carpe near Houma, Atchafalaya Bay (Ship Channel), Lower Atchafalaya River area, Intracoastal Waterway near Calumet, Intracoastal Waterway (Port Allen to Morgan City), Petite Anse area, and Calcasieu River and Ship Channel. These studies were conductd to determine potential environmental effects of dredging activities in the waterways. The Geological survey collected, treated, and analyzed 383 water and water-sediment mixture samples from 85 dredging sites and 142 postdredging samples (72 sites). Water samples were collected 100 yards upstream and downstream from the dredge effluent, from the disposal area, and from the effluent outfall during the dredge phase of the study; samples were collected at former dredge sites during the postdredging phase. Samples were analyzed for selected metals, pesticides, nutrients, and organic constituents. The analytical data are presented in tables. Sampling sites are shown on maps. There are 345 stations in the network--data from the first 101 of these (those operating during the 1974 water year) are summarized in this report. Temperature data from NASQAN stations have been summarized for each station. At most stations the harmonic provides an estimate of daily temperatures with a standard error of estimate of 2.5 degrees C or less. According to 1974 water-year data summarized from NASQAN operations, water quality of the rivers of the United States is best (by most standards) in the Northeast, Southeast, and Northwest. Waters there generally are low in dissolved solids and major and minor chemical constitutents, generally are soft (except in Florida), and carry relatively small amounts of sediment. However, many of these waters carry moderate or high levels of major nutrients and have correspondingly high populations of attached and floating plants. High counts of indicator bacteria also show signs of local pollution at some sites. Rivers of most of the Midcontinent and Southwest are characterized by moderate to high levels of dissolved major and minor constituents, sediment, major nutrients, and biota (floating and attached aquatic plants and indicator bacteria. The solubility of chalcedony appears to control the silica concentration in most of the spring waters. Fales Hot Springs may be associated with a higher temperature aquifer, 150 degrees Celsius or more, in which quartz is controlling the silica concentration. Carbon dioxide is the predominant gas escaping from Fales Hot Springs, the unnamed hot spring on the south side of Mono Lake, and the two thermal springs near Bridgeport. Most of the other thermal springs issue small amounts of gas consisting principally of nitrogen. Methane is the major component of the gas escaping from the unnamed spring on Paoha Island in Mono Lake. The deuterium and oxygen isotopic composition of most of the thermal waters are those expected for local meteoric water which has undergone minor water-rock reaction. The only exceptions are the hot spring on Paoha Island in Mono Lake and perhaps the unnamed warm spring (south side of Mono Lake) which issues mixtures of thermal water and saline lake water. The possibility of both horizontal and vertical ground movement--subsidence, fissuring, growth faulting--in the Gulf Coast region, caused by the withdrawal of large volumes of deep formation fluids, is of major concern.

Although widespread subsidence has resulted from intensive pumping of ground water, huge withdrawals from shallow oil and gas fields, and mining of sulfur and salt, little information is available on possible subsidence caused by deep fluid extractions. As far as is known, none of the major fields in the Gulf Coast region has subsided appreciably as a result of deep oil and gas production. Of special concern in this study are field evidence of or specific research regarding subsidence directly related to geopressured-fluid withdrawals. If deep reservoirs have the same general stress-strain characteristics as shallower reservoirs, appreciable subsidence could accompany major extraction of deep fluid.

A reconnaissance of the type and extent of background data available for such a subsidence appraisal was made as a first step in investigating the possibility of land subsidence associated with the exploitation of geopressured reservoirs in the Gulf Coast. This study was limited to the Texas Gulf Coast south of the landward boundary of Miocene deposits. Visits were made to offices of Federal and State agencies and industries, to determine the type and extent of data available for interpreting subsidence potential in the Texas Gulf Coast.

This report summarizes the findings of this reconnaissance investigation, including the names and agencies of those contacted and the nature and extent of pertinent data available. Although a tremendous amount of basic data is available in governmental and private files, the task of collecting and interpreting these data and the limitations or lack of some types of data, in terms of subsidence prediction, create major problems.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77412","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Energy Research and Development Administration","usgsCitation":"Lofgren, B.E., 1977, Background studies for appraising subsidence in the Texas Gulf Coast region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-412, Report: ii, 28 p.; 2 Figures: 26.95 x 26.95 inches and 25.70 x 23.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77412.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 28 p.; 2 Figures: 26.95 x 26.95 inches and 25.70 x 23.52 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144434,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0412/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":431481,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0412/figure-2.pdf","text":"Figure 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431480,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0412/figure-1.pdf","text":"Figure 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431479,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0412/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"1000000","country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Gulf Coast","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -99.60552616443702,\n 32.279977256506655\n ],\n [\n -99.60552616443702,\n 24.93448412069978\n ],\n [\n -92.88555015453552,\n 24.93448412069978\n ],\n [\n -92.88555015453552,\n 32.279977256506655\n ],\n [\n -99.60552616443702,\n 32.279977256506655\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64adae","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lofgren, B. The springs issue sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, or sodium mixed-anion waters of near neutral (6.2) to alkaline (9.2) pH. High concentrations of fluoride, more than 8 milligrams per liter, occur in Arizona in waters from Gillard Hot Springs, Castle Hot Springs, and the unnamed spring of Eagle Creek, and in New Mexico from springs along the Gila River. Deuterium compositions of the thermal waters cover the same range as those expected for meteoric waters in the respective areas. The chemical compositions of the thermal waters indicate that Thermo Hot Springs in Utah and Gillard Hot Springs in Arizona represent hydrothermal systems which are at temperatures higher than 125 deg C. Estimates of subsurface temperature based on the quartz and Na-K-Ca geothermometer differ by up to 60 deg C for Monroe, Joseph, Red Hill, and Crater hot springs in Utah. Similar conflicting estimates of aquifer temperature occur for Verde Hot Springs, the springs near Clifton and Coolidge Dam, in Arizona; and the warm springs near San Ysidro, Radium Hot Springs, and San Francisco Hot Springs, in New Mexico. Such disparities could result from mixing, precipitation of calcium carbonate, or perhaps appreciable concentrations of magnesium. Often a stratum contains mixtures of two or more of these materials and occasionally they are cemented. The aquifer ranges in thickness from approximately 300 feet at Lake Worth to less than 175 feet in the interior. The major water-bearing zone usually consists of cemented layers of sand and shells, about 100 feet thick, in the lower part of the aquifer.

The quality of water in the shallow aquifer is generally suitable for municipal use except for an area along C-17 Canal where the dissolved solids concentration exceeds 500 milligrams per liter.

The primary source of recharge to the shallow aquifer is rainfall. Discharge is mainly by evapotranspiration. Other discharges include seepage into drainage canals and Lake Worth, and pumpage.

The configuration of the water table is greatly influenced by Lake Worth, C-17 Canal, West Palm Beach water catchment area, rainfall, and municipal pumpage.

The major threat to development of water supplies, and possibly to the continuation of a current withdrawal rate of over 5 million gallons per day, is seawater intrusion. The municipal supply wells are almost 1 mile inland from the source of the seawater (Lake Worth), but the combined effects of increased pumpage, reduced recharge resulting from increased land development, and below normal rainfall, have caused seawater to advance inland in the aquifer. Additional supplies could be developed to the west, away from the threat of seawater intrusion.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7747","usgsCitation":"Land, L.F., 1977, Ground-water resources of the Riviera Beach area, Palm Beach County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 77-47, v, 38 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7747.","productDescription":"v, 38 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":361886,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0047/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159323,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1977/0047/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Palm Beach County","otherGeospatial":"Riviera Beach Area","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.16620635986328,\n 26.75\n ],\n [\n -80.04415512084961,\n 26.75\n ],\n [\n -80.04415512084961,\n 26.8333\n ],\n [\n -80.16620635986328,\n 26.8333\n ],\n [\n -80.16620635986328,\n 26.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65a6b0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Land, L.
