Recent studies exploring conditions influencing autumn migration departure have provided conflicting insights regarding factors influencing the movements of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), a popular game species. We determined factors affecting timing and magnitude of long-distance movements of 97 juvenile Mallards during autumn-winter across the midcontinent of North America marked with implanted transmitters in North and South Dakota, 2018–2019. Factors influencing variation in movement timing, along with direction and magnitudes, depended on type of movement (i.e., regional [25–310 km], initial migration, or subsequent migration movements [>310 km]). Photoperiod influenced probability of initiating all movements, although the effect was most influential for regional movements. Minimum temperature most influenced initial migration events (probability of movement increased 29% for each 1°C decrease); favorable winds also increased likelihood of initial migration events. Probability of subsequent migration events increased 80% for each 1 cm increase in depth of snow. Subsequent migration movements also were 2.0 times more likely to occur on weekend days, indicating disturbance from humans may influence movements. Migration distances increased 166 km for each 1°C reduction in minimum temperature. We also observed markedly different autumn-winter distributions of marked birds between years. Median locations during autumn-winter 2018–2019 were ~250 km farther north and ~300 km farther west during mid-December–January compared to the same time in 2019–2020. Concurrently, harvest rates for marked females and males were 10% and 26% during autumn-winter 2018–2019 and 26% and 31% during autumn-winter 2019–2020. Climate-related changes may result in increasingly variable autumn-winter distributions, with implications for wildlife recreationalists, conservation planners, and harvest managers.

","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/ece3.10605","usgsCitation":"Pearse, A.T., Szymanski, M., Anchor, C.A., Anteau, M.J., Murano, R., Brandt, D.A., and Stafford, J.D., 2023, Factors influencing autumn–winter movements of midcontinent Mallards and consequences for harvest and habitat management: Ecology and Evolution, v. 13, no. 10, e10605, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.10605.","productDescription":"e10605, 18 p.","ipdsId":"IP-146250","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441771,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.10605","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435139,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9GSUQUU","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Mallard migration and regional movement timing, distance, and direction data, 2018&amp;ndash;2020"},{"id":422287,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.30317324826213,\n              49.714898772587134\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.30317324826213,\n              28.13643686282778\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.24067324826194,\n              28.13643686282778\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.24067324826194,\n              49.714898772587134\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.30317324826213,\n              49.714898772587134\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"13","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pearse, Aaron T. 0000-0002-6137-1556 apearse@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6137-1556","contributorId":1772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pearse","given":"Aaron","email":"apearse@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887197,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Szymanski, M.","contributorId":331273,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Szymanski","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36989,"text":"North Dakota Game and Fish Department","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887198,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Anchor, Cynthia A.","contributorId":331274,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Anchor","given":"Cynthia","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":79174,"text":"South Dakota State University, Department of Natural Resources Management","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887199,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Anteau, Michael J. 0000-0002-5173-5870 manteau@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5173-5870","contributorId":3427,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anteau","given":"Michael","email":"manteau@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887200,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Murano, Rocco","contributorId":331275,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Murano","given":"Rocco","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":56178,"text":"South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887201,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Brandt, David A. 0000-0001-9786-307X dbrandt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9786-307X","contributorId":149929,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brandt","given":"David","email":"dbrandt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887202,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Stafford, Joshua D. 0000-0001-7590-8708 jstafford@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7590-8708","contributorId":267260,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stafford","given":"Joshua","email":"jstafford@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":887203,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

The river provides habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including native freshwater mussels. A remediation programme, consisting of dredging followed by the placement of backfilled sediment and/or a subaqueous cap, was initiated in 2009 to remove PCB-contaminated sediments, and managers were concerned about how remediation could affect the mussels.

Quantitative surveys were conducted across nine reaches (pools) to estimate species composition, density, population size, population structure, and ecosystem services of mussel assemblages, pre- and post-remediation. The presence of few fresh dead mussels indicates low natural mortality. Frequent recruitment by many species, varied length classes, and high biomass also support robust assemblages that perform important ecosystem services, such as biofiltration.

Remedial activity removed most of the mussels and the associated services that they perform: their density was reduced by 83% and their filtration capacity was reduced by 93%, relative to non-remediated areas. Successful prevention and control of pathogens requires knowledge of the current scope and severity of disease, as well as the ability to forecast future disease dynamics. Assessment of the current situation as well as prediction of the future conditions, rely on spatially referenced information regarding the presence or absence of a pathogen, and the prevalence of the pathogen in the population. In particular, knowledge about the location of the disease front is foundational for deploying disease countermeasures to prevent further disease spread and focusing control efforts to reduce disease intensity in affected areas. In this paper, we develop a model-based approach to designing sampling strategies for wildlife disease surveillance at the disease front. Specifically, we use a mechanistic spatio-temporal model based on an underlying partial differential equation to track the disease dynamics and predict the disease prevalence in the future. We also devise an optimal surveillance system design at the disease front that takes into account the practical constraints of sampling. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed design via a simulation study and demonstrate the application of the proposed approach by designing a surveillance strategy for the pathogen that causes white-nose syndrome.

","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s10651-023-00578-3","usgsCitation":"Oh, G., Aravamuthan, S., Ma, T.F., Juan Francisco Reyes, J.F., Ballmann, A., Hefley, T.J., McGahan, I., Russell, R., Walsh, D.P., and Zhu, J., 2023, Model-based surveillance system design under practical constraints with application to white-nose syndrome: Environmental and Ecological Statistics, v. 30, p. 649-667, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10651-023-00578-3.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"649","endPage":"667","ipdsId":"IP-141511","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441775,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-1648024/v1","text":"External Repository"},{"id":425081,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"30","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Oh, Gina","contributorId":333634,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Oh","given":"Gina","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7122,"text":"University of Wisconsin","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":893449,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Aravamuthan, Srikanth","contributorId":333635,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Aravamuthan","given":"Srikanth","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7122,"text":"University of Wisconsin","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":893450,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ma, Ting Fung","contributorId":220321,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ma","given":"Ting","email":"","middleInitial":"Fung","affiliations":[{"id":18002,"text":"University of Wisconsin - In the northern hemisphere, the success of salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) populations is vitally important to the larger marine, aquatic, and terrestrial ecosystems they inhabit. This has led to managers cultivating salmon in hatcheries and aquaculture to bolster their populations, but young salmon face many challenges, including diseases such as bacterial kidney disease (BKD). Early detection of the BKD causative agent, Renibacterium salmoninarum, is useful for managers to avoid outbreaks in hatcheries and aquaculture stocks to enable rapid treatment with targeted antibiotics. Isothermal amplification and CRIPSR-Cas12a systems may enable sensitive, relatively rapid, detection of target DNA molecules from environmental samples compared to quantitative PCR (qPCR) and culture methods. We used these technologies to develop a sensitive and specific rapid assay to detect R. salmoninarum from water samples using isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and an AsCas12a RNA-guided nuclease detection. The assay was specific to R. salmoninarum (0/10 co-occurring or closely related bacteria detected) and sensitive to 0.0128 pg/µL of DNA (approximately 20–40 copies/µL) within 10 min of Cas activity. This assay successfully detected R. salmoninarum environmental DNA in 14/20 water samples from hatcheries with known quantification for the pathogen via previous qPCR (70% of qPCR-positive samples). The RPA-CRISPR/AsCas12a assay had a limit of detection (LOD) of >10 copies/µL in the hatchery water samples and stochastic detection below 10 copies/µL, similar to but slightly higher than the qPCR assay. This LOD enables 37 C isothermal detection, potentially in the field, of biologically relevant levels of R. salmoninarum in water. Further research is needed to develop easy-to-use, cost-effective, sensitive RPA/CRISPR-AsCas12a assays for rapidly detecting low concentrations of wildlife pathogens in environmental samples.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/JWD-D-22-00128","usgsCitation":"D’Agnese, E., Chase, D.M., and Andruszkiewicz-Allan, E., 2023, Isothermal recombinant polymerase amplification and CRIPSR (CAS12A) assay detection of Renibacterium salmoninarum as an example for wildlife pathogen detection in environmental DNA samples: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 59, no. 4, p. 545-556, https://doi.org/10.7589/JWD-D-22-00128.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"545","endPage":"556","ipdsId":"IP-145740","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441781,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.7589/jwd-d-22-00128","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":422840,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"D’Agnese, Erin","contributorId":331720,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"D’Agnese","given":"Erin","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":79273,"text":"University of Washington, School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, 3737 Brooklyn Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105, USA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888579,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chase, Dorothy M. 0000-0002-7759-2687","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7759-2687","contributorId":203926,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chase","given":"Dorothy","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":888580,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Andruszkiewicz-Allan, Elizabeth","contributorId":331721,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Andruszkiewicz-Allan","given":"Elizabeth","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":79274,"text":"Wild EcoHealth LLC, Seattle, WA 98117","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":888581,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

It is scarce in natural systems, and deficiency can lead to reproductive failure, neurological issues, and death. One major cause of thiamine deficiency is an overreliance on diet items containing the enzyme thiaminase. Thiaminase activity has been noted in many prey fishes and linked to cohort failure in salmonid predators that eat prey fish with thiaminase activity, yet it is generally unknown whether evolutionary history, fish traits, and/or environmental conditions lead to production of thiaminase. We conducted literature and GenBank BLAST sequence searches to collect thiaminase activity data and sequence homology data in expressed protein sequences for 300 freshwater and marine fishes. We then tested whether presence or absence of thiaminase could be predicted by evolutionary relationships, trophic level, omega-3 fatty acid concentrations, habitat, climate, invasive potential, and body size. There was no evolutionary relationship with thiaminase activity. It first appears in Class Actinoptergyii (bony ray-finned fishes) and is present across the entire Actinoptergyii phylogeny in both primitive and derived fish orders. Instead, ecological factors explained the most variation in thiaminase: fishes were more likely to express thiaminase if they fed closer to the base of the food web, were high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, lived in freshwater, and were from tropical climates. These data provide a foundation for understanding sources of thiaminase leading to thiamine deficiency in fisheries and other organisms, including humans that eat uncooked fish.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1038/s41598-023-44654-x","usgsCitation":"Rowland, F.E., Richter, C.A., Tillitt, D.E., and Walters, D., 2023, Evolutionary and ecological correlates of thiaminase in fishes: Scientific Reports, v. 13, no. 1, 18147, 9 p., https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-44654-x.","productDescription":"18147, 9 p.","ipdsId":"IP-140637","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441783,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-44654-x","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":426969,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"13","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-24","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rowland, Freya Elizabeth 0000-0002-1041-5301","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1041-5301","contributorId":302395,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowland","given":"Freya","email":"","middleInitial":"Elizabeth","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":897188,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Richter, Cathy A. 0000-0001-7322-4206 crichter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7322-4206","contributorId":1878,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richter","given":"Cathy","email":"crichter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":897190,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tillitt, Donald E","contributorId":334992,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tillitt","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"E","affiliations":[{"id":12545,"text":"USGS retired","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":897189,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Walters, David 0000-0002-4237-2158","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4237-2158","contributorId":205921,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walters","given":"David","affiliations":[{"id":291,"text":"Fort Collins Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":897191,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

This commentary discusses these events in the context of a changing paradigm for dam and reservoir management in this region. Since the era of large dam building began to wane six decades ago, new challenges have arisen for dam and reservoir management owing to climate change, population increase, reservoir sedimentation, declining safety of aging dams, and more environmentally focused management objectives. Today we also better understand dams' benefits, costs, and environmental impacts, including some that were unforeseen and took decades to become apparent. Where dams have become unsafe, obsolete (e.g., due to excessive reservoir sedimentation), and uneconomical beyond saving, dam removal has become common. The science and practice of dam removal are accelerating rapidly, and some long-term physical and biological response studies are now available. Removal of four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River will be a larger and more complex project than any previous dam removal. The imminency of this project reflects a very different situation for dam and reservoir management than 60 years ago. Looking forward, dam and reservoir management in the western United States and worldwide will require continued collaboration and innovative thinking to meet a wide range of objectives and to manage water resources sustainably for future generations.

","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/2023WR035646","usgsCitation":"East, A.E., and Grant, G., The World Organisation for Animal Health’s global list of notifiable animal diseases includes herpetofaunal diseases caused by infection with Ranavirus spp. (RV) and two chytrid fungi, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and B. salamandrivorans (Bsal; WOAH 2023). Scientists began testing the efficacy of disinfection protocols even before human-assisted transmission of these pathogens\nwas documented (Johnson et al. 2003; Johnson and Speare 2003; Brem et al. 2007; Bryan et al. 2009), and now guidance exists to determine the appropriate biosecurity measures as personal gear moves between habitats, construction equipment moves between\nproject areas, and investigators handle multiple animals within a population (Phillot et al. 2010; Gray et al. 2017, 2018; Julian et al. 2020; Olson et al. 2021). People who are engaged in educational, recreational, commercial, or professional activities in wetlands and aquatic habitats play an important role in helping prevent the spread of pathogens and should know how and when to employ appropriate disinfecting procedures. In particular, working groups and regional chapters of Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) have developed a variety of educational materials on biosecurity and disinfection for a wide audience (e.g., PARC 2023). Herein, we provide the instructions for the disinfection of field equipment that were recently revised by the Emerging Disease Working Group of Northeast PARC (NEPARC 2022). The impetus for revision was to inform field personnel of\nthe use of a stronger bleach concentration (ca. 10× stronger) that is needed for effectiveness against Bsal (Van Rooij et al. 2017). This is important for regions where Bsal is currently known to occur (e.g., central Europe) as well as regions where it is presumed absent but could arrive at any time (e.g., North America)","language":"English","publisher":"Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles","usgsCitation":"Bletz, M.C., Julian, J.T., Kirchgessner, M.S., Drasher, J.M., Henry, P.F., Jewell, S.D., Meier, P.T., Michelle, K., Olori, J.C., Oxenrider, K.J., Ravesi, M.J., and Smith, S.A., 2023, Disinfection protocols for herpetofaunal pathogens: Herpetological Review, v. 54, no. 2, p. 200-203.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"200","endPage":"203","ipdsId":"IP-153212","costCenters":[{"id":50464,"text":"Eastern Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":422475,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":422474,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ssarherps.org/herpetological-review-pdfs/"}],"volume":"54","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bletz, Molly C.","contributorId":331493,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bletz","given":"Molly","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":36396,"text":"University of Massachusetts","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887856,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Julian, James T.","contributorId":244030,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Julian","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":48803,"text":"Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Mira Lloyd Dock Resource Conservation Center","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887857,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kirchgessner, Megan S.","contributorId":173866,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kirchgessner","given":"Megan","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":887858,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Drasher, James M.","contributorId":244031,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Drasher","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":48804,"text":"Aqua-Terra Environmental","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":887859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Henry, Paula F. However, restoration outcomes are notoriously variable, which makes fine-scale decision-making challenging. This is true for restoration efforts that follow large fires, which are increasingly common as the climate changes.

Post-fire restoration efforts, like tree planting and seeding have shown mixed success, though the causes of the variation in restoration outcomes remain unclear. Abiotic factors such as elevation and fire severity, as well as biotic factors, such as residual canopy cover and abundance of competitive understorey grasses, can vary across a burned area and may all influence the success of restoration efforts to re-establish trees following forest fires.

We examined the effect of these factors on the early seedling establishment of a tree species—māmane (Sophora chrysophylla)—in a subtropical montane woodland in Hawaiʻi. Following a human-caused wildfire, we sowed seeds of māmane as part of a restoration effort. We co-designed a project to examine māmane seedling establishment.

We found that elevation was of overriding importance, structuring total levels of plant establishment, with fewer seedlings establishing at higher elevations. Residual canopy cover was positively correlated with seedling establishment, while cover by invasive, competitive understorey grasses very weakly positively correlated with increased seedling establishment.

Our results point to specific factors structuring plant establishment following a large fire and suggest additional targeted restoration actions within this subtropical system. For example, if greater native woody recruitment is a management goal, then actions could include targeted seed placement at lower elevations where establishment is more likely, increased seeding densities at high elevation where recruitment rates are lower, and/or invasive grass removal prior to seeding. Such actions may result in faster native ecosystem recovery, which is a goal of local land managers.

","language":"English","publisher":"British Ecological Society","doi":"10.1002/2688-8319.12280","usgsCitation":"Warneke, C., Brudvig, L., Gregg, M., McDaniel, S., and Yelenik, S.G., 2023, Elevation, canopy cover and grass cover structure patterns of seedling establishment in a subtropical post-fire restoration: Ecological Solutions and Evidence, v. 4, no. 4, e12280, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.1002/2688-8319.12280.","productDescription":"e12280, 12 p.","ipdsId":"IP-148301","costCenters":[{"id":521,"text":"Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441792,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2688-8319.12280","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435142,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9FEN91Q","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park plant cover, seedling, and plot description data, 2019"},{"id":424192,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Island of Hawaii","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -155.54131668940238,\n              19.503303324433787\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.54131668940238,\n              19.253872891480412\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.10465196731835,\n              19.253872891480412\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.10465196731835,\n              19.503303324433787\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.54131668940238,\n              19.503303324433787\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Warneke, Christopher 0000-0003-2530-4273","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2530-4273","contributorId":302746,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Warneke","given":"Christopher","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6601,"text":"Michigan State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":891667,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brudvig, Lars","contributorId":270940,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Brudvig","given":"Lars","affiliations":[{"id":56224,"text":"Michigan State University, Plant Biology","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":891668,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Gregg, Makani","contributorId":223147,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gregg","given":"Makani","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13341,"text":"Hawai‘i Cooperative Studies Unit, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":891669,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McDaniel, Sierra","contributorId":204178,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McDaniel","given":"Sierra","affiliations":[{"id":36871,"text":"Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, NPS","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":891670,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Yelenik, Stephanie G. 0000-0002-9011-0769","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9011-0769","contributorId":256836,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Yelenik","given":"Stephanie","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":51875,"text":"formerly U.S. Geological Survey; currently Rocky Mountain Research Station, U.S. Forest Service","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":891671,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The role that aquatic macrophytes play in regulating aquatic GHG emissions is uncertain despite their ability to dominate shallow waterbodies. Here, we studied the effects of submersed macrophyte (Ceratophyllum demersum) density on CO2 and CH4 concentrations and fluxes. We conducted a 61-days experiment using mesocosms containing one of the following C. demersum density treatments: 0, 10, 20, or 30 individual shoots (n = 3). We found that high density C. demersum had the highest CO2 and CH4 surface water concentrations and emissions while there was no significant difference in CH4 in the low and medium densities and no plant control. The high density treatment lost biomass over the course of the experiment, indicating die-off and additions of organic matter to the sediment. In this study, we determined inorganic Hg and MeHg concentrations and loads (filter-passing and particulate fractions) for a semi-arid 164-kilometer stretch of the Snake River above the Hells Canyon Complex, a Hg-impaired hydroelectric reservoir complex on the Idaho-Oregon border, and used water quality measurements and Hg stable isotope ratios to create a comprehensive Hg source budget for the river. Results show that whereas most of the streamflow to the study reach comes from the main branch of the Snake River (i.e., the upstream watershed), major tributaries within the study reach contribute a greater proportion of inorganic Hg and MeHg loads. Mercury stable-isotope analyses highlight that Hg within the tributaries is predominantly associated with geologic deposits and snowmelt sources, the latter reflecting wet deposition. Surprisingly, irrigation return drains contribute 40–50 % of particulate inorganic Hg loads despite being ≤4.3 % of the overall water budget. Together, tributaries and irrigation return drains account for 97–100 % of the inorganic Hg and streamflow to the study reach, but ~65 % of the MeHg, indicating in-stream and riparian methylation may be an important and previously unrecognized source of MeHg. Streamflow, total suspended solids, dissolved organic carbon, and agricultural land cover were found to be important controls on the mobilization and transport of different Hg species and fractions. This study represents the first fluvial budget for Hg in the Snake River that accounts for particulate and filter-passing Hg species from both major tributaries and irrigation return drains, and expands our understanding of Hg sources and methylation processes within semi-arid environments. This information is critical to inform management decisions related to elevated Hg burdens in biota.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.167961","usgsCitation":"Baldwin, A.K., Janssen, S., Tate, M., Poulin, B., Yoder, A.M., Naymik, J., With their ubiquity, criticality as ecosystem constituents, and sensitivity to environmental variation, ants may be useful study organisms for elucidating ecological effects of solar energy development in deserts. Our objectives were to disentangle the response of a desert ant community to solar energy development decisions and test the efficacy of ants as bioindicators at a solar power facility (392 MW) in the Mojave Desert, USA. We used pitfall traps to collect ants in treatments representing different solar energy development decisions, including variably intense site preparation practices: blading (i.e., bulldozing) and mowing, and establishment of undeveloped patches in solar fields, replicated across three power blocks comprising the facility and in undeveloped control sites surrounding the facility. We determined that ant abundance, species richness, Shannon Diversity Index, and functional richness were lower in bladed treatments than in all other treatments and controls. For most taxonomic and functional ant responses, we detected no difference between nonbladed treatments and controls; these results suggest that less intensive site preparation and increased spatial heterogeneity (i.e., undeveloped patches in solar fields) can reduce the negative effects of solar energy development on desert ants. However, our results indicate that ants may serve as useful bioindicators of the severity of anthropogenic disturbance from solar energy development in deserts, and indicator analysis signifies that solar energy infrastructure may negatively affect some species with high ecological value (e.g., harvester ants). Negative effects of solar energy development on ants can have significant implications for desert ecosystem function and integrity, but conservation-minded solar facility design and construction may lead to avoidance of “bottom-up” ecological ramifications of increased solar production during the renewable energy transition.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/ecs2.4668","usgsCitation":"Grodsky, S.M., Roeder, K.A., and Campbell, J.W., 2023, Effects of solar energy development on ants in the Mojave Desert: Ecosphere, v. 14, no. 10, e4668, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4668.","productDescription":"e4668, 14 p.","ipdsId":"IP-149842","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441804,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4668","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":433448,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Ivanpah Valley, Mohave Desert","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.82156406627017,\n              35.71766195399054\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.82156406627017,\n              35.33528905925775\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.30070647469331,\n              35.33528905925775\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.30070647469331,\n              35.71766195399054\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.82156406627017,\n              35.71766195399054\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"14","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grodsky, Steven Mark 0000-0003-0846-7230","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0846-7230","contributorId":328517,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grodsky","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"Mark","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":910135,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Roeder, Karl A.","contributorId":342490,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Roeder","given":"Karl","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":6605,"text":"USGS","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":910136,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Campbell, Joshua W.","contributorId":342492,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Campbell","given":"Joshua","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":36589,"text":"USDA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":910137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

We used in-situ measurements to evaluate existing semi-analytical models for Kd and turbidity, developed a regional turbidity model based on spectral shape, and evaluated the spatial and temporal trends in Lake Washington from 2013 to 2022 using Landsat-8/9 Operational Land Imager (OLI). We found no significant trends from 2013 to 2022 in Kd or turbidity when both the annual and full datasets were considered. While ammonia has toxic properties in water and air, it also plays a central role in the biogeochemical nitrogen (N) cycle and regulates mechanisms of normal and abnormal fish physiology. Additionally, as the second most synthesized chemical on Earth, ammonia contributes economic value to many sectors, particularly fertilizers, energy storage, explosives, refrigerants, and plastics. But, with so many uses, industrial N2-fixation effectively doubles natural reactive N concentrations in the environment. The consequence is global, with excess fixed nitrogen driving degradation of soils, water, and air; intensifying eutrophication, biodiversity loss, and climate change; and creating health risks for humans, wildlife, and fisheries. Thus, the need for ammonia research in aquatic systems is growing. In response, we prepared this review to better understand the complexities and connectedness of environmental ammonia. Even the term “ammonia” has multiple meanings. So, we have clarified the nomenclature, identified units of measurement, and summarized methods to measure ammonia in water. We then discuss ammonia in the context of the N-cycle, review its role in fish physiology and mechanisms of toxicity, and integrate the effects of human N-fixation, which continuously expands ammonia's sources and uses. Ammonia is being developed as a carbon-free energy carrier with potential to increase reactive nitrogen in the environment. With this in mind, we review the global impacts of excess reactive nitrogen and consider the current monitoring and regulatory frameworks for ammonia. The presented synthesis illustrates the complex and interactive dynamics of ammonia as a plant nutrient, energy molecule, feedstock, waste product, contaminant, N-cycle participant, regulator of animal physiology, toxicant, and agent of environmental change. Few molecules are as influential as ammonia in the management and resilience of Earth's resources.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.167911","usgsCitation":"Edwards, T.M., Puglis, H.J., Lopez Duran, J., Bradshaw, L., Kent, D.B., and Farag, A., 2023, Ammonia and aquatic ecosystems – A review of global sources, biogeochemical cycling, and effects on fish: Science of the Total Environment, v. 9097, 167911, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.167911.","productDescription":"167911, 23 p.","ipdsId":"IP-154438","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441811,"rank":3,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.167911","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":435145,"rank":2,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/P9JW9IU4","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Simulating changes in the distribution of ammonium and ammonia versus physical and chemical conditions using PHREEQC with applications to toxicity to fish"},{"id":422064,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9097","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edwards, Thea M. 0000-0002-6176-2872","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6176-2872","contributorId":241635,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edwards","given":"Thea","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":886669,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Puglis, Holly J. 0000-0002-3090-6597 hpuglis@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3090-6597","contributorId":4686,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Puglis","given":"Holly","email":"hpuglis@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":886670,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lopez Duran, Jonathan 0000-0001-5927-280X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5927-280X","contributorId":328955,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lopez Duran","given":"Jonathan","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":886671,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bradshaw, Lillian","contributorId":331067,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bradshaw","given":"Lillian","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":78382,"text":"formerly Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":886672,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Kent, Douglas B. 0000-0003-3758-8322 dbkent@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3758-8322","contributorId":1871,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kent","given":"Douglas","email":"dbkent@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":37277,"text":"WMA - Earth System Processes Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":886673,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Farag, Aida 0000-0003-4247-6763 aida_farag@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4247-6763","contributorId":200690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farag","given":"Aida","email":"aida_farag@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":886674,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

In the midcontinent of North America, a > 80% loss of grasslands has made their conservation a major priority for resource managers. Grassland ecosystems evolved under periodic disturbances; consequently, grassland management often involves regular actions such as grazing, haying, or burning to maintain ecosystem integrity. The timing of such practices has direct implications on grassland ecology, agricultural economics, and survival and fecundity of grassland nesting birds (hereafter grassland birds). We conducted a meta-analysis on the nesting phenology of grassland birds throughout North America, focusing on nest-survival literature. We constructed a well-fitting model to predict median date of expected nest departure (hereafter fledge date) for grassland birds across the midcontinent. Predictions from our model demonstrate considerable spatial variation in median nesting phenology that is predictable using a spatially explicit spring phenology index. Median fledge dates were 8 or 13 days earlier in years of extreme weather conditions (dry or wet, respectively) than in years of average conditions. Species that generally nest in taller vegetation tended to have later median nest phenologies than those using shorter vegetation. Our results incorporate the most rigorous information available in the literature on nesting phenology of 36 grassland bird species and improve information available to managers about nesting phenology of grassland birds in the midcontinent of North America. Our predictions approximate the day when one-half of the nesting efforts would be complete for a given area within the midcontinent grasslands and can inform management and conservation decisions about the timing of management actions in grassland ecosystems.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.gecco.2023.e02700","usgsCitation":"Anteau, M.J., Boreal toads (Anaxyrus [Bufo] boreas) are a state-endangered species in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico, and a species of concern in Wyoming, largely due to lethal skin infections caused by the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). We performed conservation and landscape genomic analyses using single nucleotide polymorphisms from double-digest, restriction site-associated DNA sequencing in combination with the development of the first boreal toad (and first North American toad) reference genome to investigate population structure, genomic diversity, landscape connectivity and adaptive divergence. Genomic diversity (π = 0.00034–0.00040) and effective population sizes (Ne = 8.9–38.4) were low, likely due to post-Pleistocene founder effects and Bd-related population crashes over the last three decades. Population structure was also low, likely due to formerly high connectivity among a higher density of geographically proximate populations. Boreal toad gene flow was facilitated by low precipitation, cold minimum temperatures, less tree canopy, low heat load and less urbanization. We found >8X more putatively adaptive loci related to Bd intensity than to all other environmental factors combined, and evidence for genes under selection related to immune response, heart development and regulation and skin function. These data suggest boreal toads in habitats with Bd have experienced stronger selection pressure from disease than from other, broad-scale environmental variations. These findings can be used by managers to conserve and recover the species through actions including reintroduction and supplementation of populations that have declined due Innovative modeling methods, such as hidden Markov models (HMMs), allow researchers to infer unobserved animal behaviors from movement data, and implementations often assume that transitions between states occur multiple times. However, some behavioral shifts of interest, such as parturition, migration initiation, and juvenile dispersal, may only occur once during an observation period, and HMMs may not be the best approach to identify these changes. We present two change-point models for identifying single transitions in movement behavior: a location-based change-point model and a movement metric-based change-point model. We first conducted a simulation study to determine the ability of these models to detect a behavioral transition given different amounts of data and the degree of behavioral shifts. We then applied our models to two ungulate species in central Pennsylvania that were fitted with global positioning system collars and vaginal implant transmitters to test hypotheses related to parturition behavior. We fit these models in a Bayesian framework and directly compared the ability of each model to describe the parturition behavior across species. Our simulation study demonstrated that successful change point estimation using either model was possible given at least 12 h of post-change observations and 15 min fix interval. However, our models received mixed support among deer and elk in Pennsylvania due to behavioral variation between species and among individuals. Our results demonstrate that when the behavior follows the dynamics proposed by the two models, researchers can identify the timing of a behavioral change. Although we refer to detecting parturition events, our results can be applied to any behavior that results in a single change in time.

","language":"English","publisher":"Springer Nature","doi":"10.1186/s40462-023-00430-0","usgsCitation":"Gundermann, K., Diefenbach, D.R., Walter, W., Corondi, A., Banfield, J., Wallingford, B., Stainbrook, D., Rosenberry, C., and Buderman, F., 2023, Change-point models for identifying behavioral transitions in wild animals: Movement Ecology, v. 11, 65, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.1186/s40462-023-00430-0.","productDescription":"65, 15 p.","ipdsId":"IP-149981","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":441819,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1186/s40462-023-00430-0","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":432342,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gundermann, K.P.","contributorId":340853,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gundermann","given":"K.P.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7260,"text":"Pennsylvania State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":907608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Diefenbach, Duane R. 0000-0001-5111-1147 drd11@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5111-1147","contributorId":5235,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Diefenbach","given":"Duane","email":"drd11@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":907609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Walter, W. Urban growth and associated land cover transitions alter the thermal and physical properties of the land surface, resulting in surface temperature change in urban areas. In this study, we integrated both land cover and surface temperature information to characterize surface temperature spatiotemporal variations using the recently available time series of Landsat land surface temperature and annual land change products. We analyzed over thirty-year trends of land surface temperature (LST) in urban and surrounding non-urban lands. We found that the transitions of different land cover types to urban affected urban LST trends differently, and further impacted the temporal trend of urban heat island intensity.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"IGARSS 2023 - 2023 IEEE international geoscience and remote sensing
