Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor. Studies of the geothermal aspect-of the Bridge area of \nthe Raft River basin in south-central Idaho (fig. 1) by the \nU.S. Geological Survey began in 1972 when Young and Mitchell \n(1973) made a geochemical and geologic reconnaissance of \nselected thermal waters in Idaho. The Bridge area had been \ndesignated the Frazier known geothermal resource area \n(Frazier KGRA) by the U.S. Geological Survey (Godwin and \nothers-, 1971) . Since 1972, several units of the Geological \nSurvey have studied the area to provide data for the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, which proposes to ascertain whether the geothermal resource can be \ndeveloped for power generation and other uses. The studies \ninclude geologic mapping, geophysical surveys, water sampling, test drilling, and studies of all available drill- \nhole data. A list of reports already prepared on the area \nis included with this report.

Core drilling of five holes began in August 1974 and \nwas completed in March 1975. These holes are referred to as \nintermediate-depth core holes, principally because in the \nspring of 1974, 35 auger holes 25 to 98 feet (7.6 to 30\nmeters) were completed in the area (Crosthwaite, 1974), and \nthe Aerojet Nuclear Company, under the auspices of the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, was planning \nsome deep drilling 4,000 to 6,000 feet (1,200 to 1,800 \nmeters) (fig. 1). The purpose of the core drilling was to \nprovide information to test geophysical interpretations of \nthe subsurface structure and lithology and to provide hydrologic and geologic data on the shallow part of the geothermal \nsystem. Samples of the core were made available to several \ndivisions and branches of the Geological Survey and to \npeople and agencies outside the Survey. This report presents the basic data from the core holes that had been \ncollected to September 1, 1975, and includes lithologic and \ngeophysical well logs, chemical analyses of water (table 1), \nand laboratory analyses of cores (table 2) that were completed as of the above date. The data were collected by the \nIdaho District office, Hydrologic Laboratory, Borehole \nGeophysics Research Project, and Drilling, Sampling, and \nTesting Section, all of the Water Resources Division, and \nthe Branch of Central Environmental Geology of the Geologic \nDivison.

On June 27, 1975, the city of Ames and vicinity sustained severe flooding from Squaw creek and the south Skunk River. The storm which preceded the flood was net particularly outstanding in its intensity or duration. However, antecedent conditions plus the timing and direction of the storm were \"ideally tuned\" to cause the flood.

\n

In terms of magnitude of discharge as well as of damages this was the most severe flood on record, with losses estimated by city and Iowa State University officials at over a million dollars. The most unfortunate loss involved the drowning of a young person.

\n

The peak discharge at the Squaw Creek station, 206 mi2 (534 km2), was measured at 11,300 ft3/s (320 m3/s), which is 1.6 times the 100-year flood. The south Skunk River above the confluence with Squaw creek, 315 mi2 (816 km2), peaked at 5,330 ft3/s (151 m3). The recurrence interval of this discharge is 6.0 years. The peak discharge on the South Skunk River below the confluence with Squaw creek, 556 mi2 (1440 km2), was 14,700 ft3/s (416 m3/s), which is 1.1 times the 100-year flood.

The U. S. Geological Survey has collected data on Oklahoma's ground-water resources since 1934. Most of these data were collected as part of specific ground-water studies conducted in cooperation with various Federal, State, and local agencies.

Although a large amount of ground-water data have been published, they are scattered through a variety of reports and are not readily available on a regional basis. Furthermore, a considerable amount of data have never been published and can be obtained only from the files of the Geological Survey. The purpose of this report is to make available both published and unpublished records for approximately 1,780 wells, test-holes, and springs in 16 counties in northeastern Oklahoma. In addition, selected references to pertinent ground-water reports covering parts of the 16-county area are included for those requiring more specific information.

The stratigraphic nomenclature and age determinations used in the report are those accepted by the Oklahoma Geological Survey and do not necessarily agree with those of the U.S. Geological Survey.

This report is the second of a series that will present data collected in this study. Stream-discharge and water-quality data were collected at 53 sampling stations in the Redwood Creek and Mill Creek drainage basins. Measurements included the following variables: Stream stage and discharge; turbidity; sediment; onsite water-quality determinations of temperature, pH , total alkalinity, specific conductance, and dissolved-oxxygen concentration; chemical analyses of water samples for major dissolved solids, selected trace elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon; chemical analyses of bottom sediment for organic carbon and pesticides; bacteria; benthic invertebrates; fish; periphyton; phytoplankton; and seston. Additional data include changes in geometry at 10 stream-channel cross sections along Mill Creek and the distribution of erosional landforms in the Mill Creek drainage basin; quantity and chemical composition of rainwater; and the intragravel-streambed condition at selected stations in the Redwood Creek drainage basin. Aquifer in the coastal plain of New Jersey","docAbstract":"A digital computer-simulation model of the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer is used to evaluate the aquifer's capabilities of meeting the projected future demands and to study the cause of the rapidly declining water levels. The modelled area includes 1,500 square miles (3,885 square kilometres) of the New Jersey Coastal Plain and includes all the important centers of pumping in Monmouth, Burlington, and Ocean Counties from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer. The Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand of Late Cretaceous age are exposed in the western part of the New Jersey Coastal Plain along a belt trending northeast-southwest from Raritan Bay to Delaware Bay. The formations typically consist of poorly sorted silty to fine quartz sand, the Wenonah Formation, and a coarse clastic quartz sand unit, the Mount Laurel Sand. The Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer is composed of the sandy part of the geologic units. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 360 square feet per day (33.4 square metres per day) to 1,430 square feet per day (132.8 square metres per day); the estimated hydraulic conductivity ranges from about 1.5 x 10-4 feet per second (4.6 x 10-5 metres per second) to 2.2 x 10-4 feet per second (6.7 x 10-5 metres per second); and the storage coefficient varies from about 1.5 x 10-5 to 3.5 x 10-4. The annual average rate of withdrawal from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer in Monmouth, Burlington, and Ocean Counties increased from about 1 million gallons per day (44 cubic decimetres per second) in 1959 to slightly more than 2 million gallons per day (88 cubic decimetres per second) in 1970. Near the pumping centers in Monmouth County, the water level declined as much as 100 feet (30.5 metres) between 1959 and 1970. In the subjacent Englishtown aquifer underlying the lower confining unit (Marshalltown Formation), the annual average rate of withdrawal in all of Monmouth and Ocean Counties increased from 5.5 million gallons per day (241 cubic decimetres per second) in 1959 to 9.5 million gallons per day (416 cubic decimetres per second) in 1970. Water-level declines for the same period are as much as 140 feet (42.7 metres) near centers of pumping. The digital-simulation model was calibrated by matching computed declines in the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer with historic water-level declines over the 12-year period, 1959-70. The results of the modelling show that recharge to the aquifer occurs as leakage from the upper confining unit owing to withdrawals from the aquifer. Of equal significance is the effect of water-level declines in the Englishtown aquifer, which generate leakage from the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer through the lower confining unit, which in turn generates leakage (recharge) to the aquifer from the upper confining unit.
