The study is also designed to determine the effectiveness of different erosion-control measures in reducing sediment discharges. The study area, near Enola, Pa., consists of five adjacent drainage basins, four of which will be crossed by Interstate 81. Ninety percent of the land in each of the basins is in forest or grass. Active farmland accounts for less than 10 percent, and the remainder is in roadways and buildings. The major factor affecting sediment concentrations and discharges was the construction of a one-lane roadway and a 5-acre (2 hm2) farm pond in basin 2. The reservoir system is operated under the assumption of a 3-day prior knowledge of inflows. This information is attainable from the ooperational reservoir-inflow forecasting model developed in the Part I report. The model, developed for this part of the study, incorporates an inflow component, a diversion-canal component, and a reservoir system component and is capable of evaluating the performance of the reservoir systemem for a variety of operating rule conditions. All model components were verified using observed reservoir input and output data for a 6-year (1967-72 water years) period. In addition, a long-term 31-year simulation under present rule of operation was performed and the results summarized statistically. The model may be used for simulating other rule curves of operation for planning studies of reservoir system performance. By 1973, an estimated six million cubic feet of such material had been placed in six burial grounds in two valleys. The practice initially was thought of as a safe method for permanently removing these potentially hazardous substances from man's surroundings, but is now que.3tionable at this site because of known leaching of contaminants from the waste, transport in ground water, and release to the terrestrial and fluvial environments. \r\n\r\nThis review attempts to bring together in a single document information from numerous published and unpublished sources regarding the past criteria used for selecting the Oak Ridge burial-ground sites, the historical development and conditions of these facilities as of 1974, the geologic framework of the Laboratory area and the movement of water and water-borne contaminants in that area, the effects of sorption and ion exchange upon radionuclide transport, and a description and evaluation of the existing monitoring system. It is intended to assist Atomic Energy Commission (now Energy Research and Development Administration) officials in the formulation of managerial decisions concerning the burial grounds and present monitoring methods. \r\n\r\nSites for the first three burial grounds appear to have been chosen during and shortly after World War II on the basis of such factors as safety, security, and distance from sources of waste origin. By 1950, geologic criteria had been introduced, and in the latter part of that decade, geohydrologic criteria were considered. While no current criteria have been defined, it becomes evident from the historical record that the successful containment of radionuclides below land surface for long periods of time is dependent upon a complex interrelationship between many geologic, hydrologic, and geochemical controls, and any definition of criteria must include consideration of these factors.\r\n\r\nFor the most part, the burial grounds have been developed by a simple cut and fill procedure similar to the operation of a municipal landfill. Low permeability of the residuum, high rainfall, shallow depth to ground water, the excavation of trenches below the water table, and other practices, have contributed to a condition of waste leaching in probably all of the burial grounds. Despite these conditions, only very small concentrations of radionuclides have been found in wells or otherwise attributed to the initial three, small sites in Bethel Valley. This fact, however, may be due in part to the scant extent of site monitoring of those burial grounds for transport of radionuclides in ground water, and to the discharge of liquid radioactive waste to the drainage in concentrations that probably would have masked the presence of contaminants derived from these burial grounds. In comparison to the Bethel Valley sites, larger amounts of radioactive contaminants have been found in wells, seeps, trench overflow, and the drainages that drain Burial Grounds 4 and 5 in Melton Valley. The movement of radionuclides from the trenches to the drainages show that the latter sites are not suitable for the retention of all contaminants under existing conditions, and invalidates the operational concept of long-term or permanent retention of all radionuclides in the geologic environment. \r\n\r\nThe transport of many radioactive ions leached from the waste has been retarded by the very high sorptive and ion exchange capacity of the residuum with which the radionuclides have had contact. Not all radionuclides, though, will be retained in the subsurface by adsorption, absorption, or ion exchange. The anomaly patterns were derived from the point-plot maps of copper and molybdenum distribution in the individual sample media (Curtain, Day, O'Leary, Marsh, and Tripp, 1976; Curtain, Day, Carten, Marsh, and Tripp, 1976). Background data were disregarded for each of the two metals. Weakly anomalous data for all media (small black symbols) were assigned the number 2; strongly anomalous data for all media (large black symbols) were assigned the number 3. These new data were then summed or \"stacked\" for each metal so that all sites showing anomalous values in one or more of the sample media had a numerical rating that ranged from 2 (weakly anomalous value in one sample medium) to a possible 12 (strongly anomalous values in all four sample media). The summed data were ranked into three groups shown in the explanation. The drainage basins showing anomalous values were outlined according to these groups. Water samples should be taken using a US DH-48 water sampler across the stream channel and should be filtered and acidified in situ. Stream sediments should be taken as a composite sample up and across the axis of the channel. Only sediment fractions less than 90 ?m (170 mesh) should be analyzed for uranium. The elements As, Ca, Al, B, Mg, K, and Na exhibit a positive correlation with uranium in surface waters, while a much larger suite of elements exhibit a positive correlation with uranium in stream sediments: K, Mn, Mg, Ti, Ca, Al, Fe, Pb, Cr, Y, Zr, Li, Zn, Th, and As. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The aea covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Moreland quadrangle. The storm which preceded the flood was net particularly outstanding in its intensity or duration. However, antecedent conditions plus the timing and direction of the storm were \"ideally tuned\" to cause the flood.</p>\n<p>In terms of magnitude of discharge as well as of damages this was the most severe flood on record, with losses estimated by city and Iowa State University officials at over a million dollars. The most unfortunate loss involved the drowning of a young person.</p>\n<p>The peak discharge at the Squaw Creek station, 206 mi<sup>2</sup> (534 km<sup>2</sup>), was measured at 11,300 ft<sup>3</sup>/s (320 m<sup>3</sup>/s), which is 1.6 times the 100-year flood. The south Skunk River above the confluence with Squaw creek, 315 mi<sup>2</sup> (816 km<sup>2</sup>), peaked at 5,330 ft<sup>3</sup>/s (151 m<sup>3</sup>). The recurrence interval of this discharge is 6.0 years. The Bridge area had been \ndesignated the Frazier known geothermal resource area \n(Frazier KGRA) by the U.S. Geological Survey (Godwin and \nothers-, 1971) . Since 1972, several units of the Geological \nSurvey have studied the area to provide data for the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, which proposes to ascertain whether the geothermal resource can be \ndeveloped for power generation and other uses. The studies \ninclude geologic mapping, geophysical surveys, water sampling, test drilling, and studies of all available drill- \nhole data. A list of reports already prepared on the area \nis included with this report.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Core drilling of five holes began in August 1974 and \nwas completed in March 1975. These holes are referred to as \nintermediate-depth core holes, principally because in the \nspring of 1974, 35 auger holes 25 to 98 feet (7.6 to 30\nmeters) were completed in the area (Crosthwaite, 1974), and \nthe Aerojet Nuclear Company, under the auspices of the U.S. \nEnergy Research and Development Administration, was planning \nsome deep drilling 4,000 to 6,000 feet (1,200 to 1,800 \nmeters) (fig. 1). The purpose of the core drilling was to \nprovide information to test geophysical interpretations of \nthe subsurface structure and lithology and to provide hydrologic and geologic data on the shallow part of the geothermal \nsystem. Samples of the core were made available to several \ndivisions and branches of the Geological Survey and to \npeople and agencies outside the Survey. This report presents the basic data from the core holes that had been \ncollected to September 1, 1975, and includes lithologic and \ngeophysical well logs, chemical analyses of water (table 1), \nand laboratory analyses of cores (table 2) that were completed as of the above date. Furthermore, a considerable amount of data have never been published and can be obtained only from the files of the Geological Survey. The purpose of this report is to make available both published and unpublished records for approximately 1,780 wells, test-holes, and springs in 16 counties in northeastern Oklahoma. A portable neutron logger was used to record monthly soil-moisture profiles in the unsaturated zone at 11 sites in the basin. Moisture content, computed in inches of depth over the basin, ranged from 51.41 inches in April to 37.62 inches in August. Thickness of the unsaturated zone was greatest in April and was least in June. The observed absence of a pulse, or wave, of moisture moving down through the soil at most sites may be due to the infrequency of measurements, the location of sites in sandy, well-drained areas, and a relatively constant source of moisture (precipitation) at the surface. The study does not indicate a strong correlation between volume of snowmelt and soil-moisture; this may be due to the high porosity and permeability of soil material at the observation sites. Although nine pairs of monthly basin runoff and soil-moisture content data during IFYGL has a linear correlation coefficient of 0.82, too few data are available to develop a statistical relationship.
