The estimated 1970 water use in the study area averaged about 13 million gallons per day (mgd); of this amount about 9 mgd came from surface-water sources--from a large reservoir outside the study area--and about 4 mgd came from ground water pumped from two aquifers in the area. Anticipated water use soon will be about 18 to 21 mgd; virtually all the additional quantity required (about 5 to 8 mgd) above present use must come from ground-water sources. Preliminary evaluation of the aquifers suggests that an additional 1.5 mgd can be developed from the upper aquifer and 7 mgd from the lower aquifer. Existing wells tapping the lower aquifer might yield additional water and increase the total yield in the area by 3.5 mgd, and new wells drilled in selected areas could produce an additional 3.5 mgd from this aquifer. However, additional, large-scale ground-water withdrawal from the lower aquifer could induce saltwater intrusion into wells situated in coastal areas. The beds above and below the injection zone were subjected to attack by the acid waste. By 1969, effects of the waste were detected in the water of the well monitoring the upper part of the Floridan aquifer at 1,400 feet. The disposal well was deepened late in 1971 to 2,242 feet in an attempt to stop the upward migration of waste. The results of research investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey during 1966-73 indicated that the waste continued to move upward and laterally. This investigated, continued by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1973-1975, shows that the remedial actions of repairing the disposal well liner and injecting periodically into the deep monitor well at 2,060 feet failed to contain the wastes within the lower part of the Floridan aquifer. The data collected by the Survey are supported by the owner 's chemical-oxygen-demand and pH determinations. A hydraulic connection between the injection zone and the overlying monitoring zone is implied. Plans call for injecting into deepter strata. Isotope and geochemical data for the Bruneau-Grand View area suggest that recharge to the area may not be entirely from sources within the local surface-drainage area, but possibly from the areas of higher altitude of the Bruneau River drainage to the southeast; or that the hot water that wells and springs are discharging is water that was recharged at a time when the regional climate was much colder than the present climate. Aerial surveys were made along about 500 miles (800 km) of flight line, and 67 resistivity soundings were made along 110 miles (180 km) of profile. The surveys did not indicate the presence of any large bodies of fresh ground water, but several areas may be underlain by small to moderate amounts of fresh to slightly saline water.</p><p>The material underlying the flood plain of the Rio Grande is predominantly clay or sand of low resistivity. Water-quality data for many wells and springs and for selected sites on streams that cross the recharge zone of the aquifer are being collected to provide background information and to detect any current pollution of ground water in the area. Water from the Edwards aquifer is very hard and of the calcium bicarbonate type. The concentrations of dissolved solids in samples from wells and springs ranged from about 200 to 470 mg/1 (milligrams per liter); the chloride and sulfate concentrations ranged from 6.5 to 62 mg/1 and from 0.0 to 65 mg/1, respectively. The nitrate and phosphate contents of the ground water ranged from 0.0 to 15 mg/1 and from 0.00 to 0. 37 mg/1. The concentrations of these and other constituents show that the chemical quality of water in the Edwards aquifer has not been degraded significantly by domestic, industrial, or agricultural effluents. However, variations in the number of coliforms, the concentrations of nitrate and phosphate, and the presence of fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci in samples from some wells show that fecal pollution is reaching the aquifer. Most of these wells, which are located in or just downdip from the recharge zone, are poorly sealed or inadequately cased. The areal variation in the locations of these wells indicates that pollution of ground water in the aquifer is very localized. Prllution results principally from runoff from the land surface and from effluent from septic tanks which enters the aquifer through fractures in the recharge zone or which infiltrates through the thin soil into poorly sealed or inadequately cased wells in or adjacent to the recharge zone. Trace amounts of several pesticides have been detected in samples from two wells in the San Antonio area. Field investigations showed the source of pesticides in these wells to be. surface drainage that entered the wellbores. Water-quality data collected at sites on streams that cross the recharge zone of the Edwards aquifer show the chemical composition of surface water to be very similar to that of ground water in the area. Water in most streams is very hard and of the calcium bicarbonate type. Limited data on the bacteriological quality show that coliforms were present at each of the site sampled and that fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci were present at most sites. Although the number of these bacteria varied greatly in both time and place, their density in samples from most sites were low for untreated surface water.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"San Antonio, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr76574","usgsCitation":"Reeves, R., and Blakey, J., 1976, Chemical and bacteriological quality of water at selected sites in the San Antonio area, Texas, August 1968-January 1975: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-574, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76574.","productDescription":"30 p.","numberOfPages":"73","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":153283,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0574/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":281758,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0574/report.pdf"}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Texas","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -100.7971,29.0834 ], [ -100.7971,30.2567 ], [ -97.8094,30.2567 ], [ -97.8094,29.0834 ], [ -100.7971,29.0834 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e48f7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reeves, R.D.","contributorId":95043,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reeves","given":"R.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182925,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blakey, J.F.","contributorId":23969,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakey","given":"J.F.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":182924,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The history of ground-water quality in the Lompoc area shows little change in the Lompoc upland and the Lompoc terrace, but an increase in the concentration of dissolved solids in the main water-bearing zone beneath the Lompoc plain. Most water pumped from this zone is used for irrigation and contains dissolved solids in concentrations ranging from less than 500 to more than 3,000 milligrams per litre. The average concentration is about 1,500 milligrams per litre. The total hardness is more than 1,000 milligrams per litre, and most of this water contains more than 750 milligrams per litre sulfate; the most abundant ions are calcium, sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate.</p><p>Changes in ground-water quality seem largely related to irrigation return, to inflow of native water of poor quality, to discharge of sewage effluent, and, in the shallow water-bearing zone, perhaps to the oxidation of sulfide minerals.</p><p>Average annual recharge to ground water in the plain from the Santa Ynez River, local tributaries, underflow, and infiltration of rain is about 14,000 acre-ft (acre-feet) or 17 hm<sup>3</sup> (cubic hectometres).</p><p>Discharge of ground water from the Lompoc plain is by pumping, evapotranspiration, streamflow, and underflow to the ocean. Pumpage during 1972 was about 23,000 acre-ft (28.4 hm<sup>3</sup>), less than half of which probably returned to the main water-bearing zone.</p><p>Ground water in storage is about 220,000 acre-ft (270 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc plain area, more than 100,000 acre-ft (120 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc terrace area, and more than 400,000 acre-ft (490 hm<sup>3</sup>) in the Lompoc upland area. During the period 1941-72, the aggregate depletion of storage in the three areas was about 60,000 acre-ft (74 hm<sup>3</sup>).</p><p>Management alternatives to improve water quality in the rain water-bearing zone of the Lompoc area include increasing the quantity of water available for recharge by importing water and salvaging more runoff and treated sewage effluent, by coordinating future releases from Lake Cachuma, by providing additional storage space in the aquifer by selective pumping, by changing patterns of water use, by selective pumping and transport of highly mineralized ground water from the area, and by pumping ground water of favorable quality from older aquifers or adjacent basins.</p><p>An adequate continuing water-quality monitoring program to evaluate changes would provide pertinent information for the prudent utilization of water resources.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76183","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Water Resources Control Board","usgsCitation":"Miller, G., 1976, Ground-water resources in the Lompoc area, Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-183, vi, 78 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76183.","productDescription":"vi, 78 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":433420,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0183/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":152544,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0183/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","city":"Lompoc","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.65712555887862,\n              34.86953509755509\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.65712555887862,\n              34.45950712528406\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.15419752111187,\n              34.45950712528406\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.15419752111187,\n              34.86953509755509\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.65712555887862,\n              34.86953509755509\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696dd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, G.A.","contributorId":107671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"G.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":182099,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Precipitation-evaporation balance and the water quality parameters have high factor loadings on the first principal component. Highest loadings on component 2 are for streamflow in and out of the lakes. Components 3 and 4 are characterized by geology and ground-water flow parameters.
