The purpose of the study, made from August through November 1974, was to determine the extent of any potential arsenic problems that may affect Lake Sonoma which would form behind the dam. Samples of sediment, water, and biota were collected and analyzed for arsenic content.

Results of the study indicate that arsenic presents a potential problem only in the Little Warm Springs Creek area. Samples of the geothermal water from that area contained 140 micrograms of arsenic per litre of water--almost two and one-half times the maximum allowable concentration for drinking water. However, the contribution of arsenic to the proposed lake would be minimal because discharge of the geothermal water in the area is estimated to be only about 0.01 cubic foot per second (0.0003 cubic metre per second).

Analyses of limited numbers of biota samples indicated that there is no biomagnification of arsenic through the food chain. Concentrations of arsenic in fish and benthic invertebrates collected from water containing high levels of arsenic were similar to concentrations in samples collected from water with low arsenic content. Concentrations of arsenic on sediment were low throughout the project area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7630","usgsCitation":"Middelburg, R.F., 1976, Occurrence of arsenic in the Dry Creek Basin, Sonoma County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-30, iv, 17 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7630.","productDescription":"iv, 17 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":359107,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":" https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159468,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0030/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Sonoma County","otherGeospatial":"Dry Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.3333,\n              38.59540719940386\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.75,\n              38.59540719940386\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.75,\n              38.94285503599089\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.3333,\n              38.94285503599089\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.3333,\n              38.59540719940386\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af6e4b07f02db69299b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Middelburg, Robert F.","contributorId":35360,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Middelburg","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

For each test, samples of drill cuttings were collect·ed, borehole geophysical logs were run, and water samples were collected from specific zones.
\n
The Leopold Guerra No. 1 test hole penetrated sand and gravel :o 1,100 feet (335m), and logs and water samples indicated fresh ground water to that depth. The Clay Evans No. 1 test penetrated sand, gravel, and clay to 555 feet (169m), sand and thin volcanic flows to about 1,250 feet (381 m), and volcanic flows and tuffs to 2,006 feet (611 m). Logs and water samples indicated fresh ground \\vater to about 1, 250 feet (381 m); below that, permeability is probably low. Four test wells tapped a water-hearing zone of sand and gravel and had yields ranging from 27 to 170 gallons per minute, with drawdowns of about 5 feet to about 65 feet. Except for high concentrations of iron and manganese (which can be treated and reduced for domestic use), the water quality is good. Conditions for drain-field waste disposal (such as from septic tanks) are probably good in at least the northern two-thirds of the island. The potential for seawater encroachment into the water-bearing zones underlying the island is unknown but may be great in places. The danger of inducing encroachment can be minimized by maintaining pumping levels above sea level, using a network of several wells pumped intermittently into a storage facility, and spacing these wells to spread out the effects cf pumping. Monitoring of the water quality in all wells would help indicate early signs cf increasing chloride content that warn of impending seawater encroachment.

In the northern half of the island, where ground-water conditions are the most favorable, wells 100 tc 200 feet deep may yield 25 to 100 gallons per minute with minimum chances of seawater encroachment. The atlas was prepared in cooperation with the Water Management District to provide pertinent water-quality information relating to the objectives of the Florida State Water Resources Act of 1972. Under the provisions of this act, the Water Management District is required to establish a regional water-use plan, issue permits for water-use and water-resources related construction, and authorize the export of water. The data presented on these maps will be useful to those concerned with water management and use, in assessing regional water quality, and in establishing a base for comparison with future quality data.

The ranges of concentration shown on the maps represent maximum concentrations in surface water during the sampling period, January 1965-September 1970. Concentrations are plotted at the sampling sites and are the major criteria for determining the extent of concentration ranges. In some cases the drainage basin boundaries are used in defining concentration range boundaries because the quantity and quality of surface runoff is characteristic of the environment of the basin and may be entirely different from the runoff of adjacent basins. Within drainage basins, individual streams and local drainage divides define concentration boundaries. Some areas, although adjacent to each other in the same basin, have entirely different concentration ranges. For example, an area containing dissolved-solids concentrations in the 0-25 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) range may be adjacent to an area in which concentrations exceed 100 mg/1, as in the southwest part of Escambia County. Concentration boundaries in these areas were selected by extending each range about halfway between the two sampling sites, as opposed to grading an intermediate range between them without supporting data. As the data are sparse in many areas, regional concentration patterns are generalized and local variations may be expected to exist.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7616","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Florida Department of Environmental Regulation and Northwest Florida Water Management District","usgsCitation":"Earle, J., 1976, Dissolved solids, hardness, and orthophosphate of surface-water runoff in the Northwest Florida Water Management District: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-16, Report: 3 p.; 3 Plates: 35.07 x 23.64 inches and smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7616.","productDescription":"Report: 3 p.; 3 Plates: 35.07 x 23.64 inches and smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":377050,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377049,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377048,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377047,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157789,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Northwest Florida Water Management District","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              29.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -84,\n              29.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -84,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              29.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a22a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Earle, J.E.","contributorId":41037,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Earle","given":"J.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197226,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Selection of this area was based on recommendations made in an earlier appraisal of the potential of Paradox basin salt deposits for such use. \r\n\r\nPart of sec. 5, T. 23 S., R. 20 E. has been selected as a site for subsurface investigation as a potential repository for radioactive waste. This site has easy access to transportation, is on public land, is isolated from human habitation, is not visible from Arches National Park, and the salt body lies within about 800 feet (244 m) of the surface. Further exploration should include investigation of possible ground water in the caprock and physical exploration of the salt body to identify a thick bed of salt for use as a storage zone that can be isolated from the shaly interbeds that possibly contain quantities of hydrocarbons. \r\n\r\nSalt Valley anticline, a northwest-trending diapiric structure, consists of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks arched over a thick core of salt of the Paradox Member of the Middle Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formation. Salt began to migrate to form and/or develop this structure shortly after it was deposited, probably in response to faulting. This migration caused upwelling of the salt creating a linear positive area. This positive area, in turn, caused increased deposition of sediments in adjacent areas which further enhanced salt migration. Not until late Jurassic time had flowage of the salt slowed sufficiently to allow sediments of the Morrison and younger formations to be deposited across the salt welt. A thick cap of insoluble residue was formed on top of the salt diapir as a result of salt dissolution through time. \r\n\r\nThe crest of the anticline is breached; it collapsed in two stages during the Tertiary Period. The first stage was graben collapse during the early Tertiary; the second stage occurred after Miocene regional uplift had caused downcutting streams to breach the salt core resulting in further collapse. The axis of the anticline is a narrow generally flat-floored valley containing a few hills composed of downdropped Mesozoic rocks foundered, in the caprock. The caprock, which underlies thin alluvium in the valley, is composed of contorted gypsum, shale, sandstone, and limestone--the insoluble residue of the Paradox salt.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76303","usgsCitation":"Gard, L.M., 1976, Geology of the north end of the Salt Valley Anticline, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-303, iii, 35 p., 3 sheets :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76303.","productDescription":"iii, 35 p., 3 sheets :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151319,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0303/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48430,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0303/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48431,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0303/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48432,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0303/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":48433,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0303/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c845","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gard, Leonard Meade","contributorId":50221,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gard","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"Meade","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":180167,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
