Most recharge to the aquifer originates in or near the outcrop areas of the Madison in the Bighorn Mountains and Black Hills, and most discharge occurs through springs and wells. Flow through the aquifer in the modeled areas was approximately 200 cubic feet per second. The aquifer can probably sustain increased ground-water withdrawals of up to several tens of cubic feet per second, but these withdrawals probably would significantly lower the potentiometric surface in the Madison aquifer in a large part of the basin. Wells in the water-table aquifer yield generally less than 50 gpm and dissolved solids concentration is less than 500 mg/liter except in coastal areas and the peninsula southwest of the Myakka River estuary. Wells in the Venice area that tap zone 1 usually yield less than 30 gmp. The quality of water is good except in the peninsula area. Zone 2 is the most highly developed aquifer in the heavily populated coastal areas. Wells yield as much as 200 gpm. In most areas, water is of acceptable quality. Wells that tap zone 3 yield as much as 500 gmp. Fluoride concentration ranges from 1 to 3.5 mg/liter. Zone 4 yields as much as 1,500 gpm to large diameter wells. Except in the extreme northeastern part of the area water from zone 4 usually contains high concentrations of fluoride and sulfate. Zone 5 is the most productive aquifer in the area, but dissolved solids concentrations usually are too high for public supply except in the extreme northeast. Surface water derived from natural drainage is of good quality except for occasional high color in summer. Most of the streams in the Myakka River basin area have small drainage basins, are of short channel length, and do not yield high volumes of flow. During the dry season, streamflow is maintained by groundwater discharge, and, as a result, chloride, sulfate, and dissolved solids concentrations and the hardness of the water are above drinking water standards for some streams. About 32 percent of the county is covered by lakes, swamps, and marshes. Water requirements in 1970 averaged about 54 million gallons per day. About 85 percent of the water was obtained from wells; about 15 percent from lakes. The Floridan aquifer supplies almost all the ground water used in Lake County. Annual recharge to the Floridan aquifer averages about 7 inches over the county; runoff average 8.5 inches. The quality of ground and surface water in Lake County is in general good enough for most uses; however, the poor quality of Floridan-aquifer water in the St. John River Valley probably results from the upward movement of saline water along a fault zone. Test results were evaluated for consistency, and were compared with infiltration rates in the underlying loess and with hydraulic conductivities in the unsaturated zone.

Average daily infiltration rates in the Richfield soil ranged from 3 to 5 feet or 0.9 to 1.5 m (metres) after 16 days using 22-inch or 560mm (millimetre) ring infiltrometers; 2.3 feet (0.7 m) after 68 days using a 10-inch (250-mm) ring infiltrometer; and from 1.3 to 2.2 feet (0.4 to 0.7 m) after 38 days using double-ring infiltrometers. By comparison, the average daily infiltration rate in the underlying Peoria Loess using a 10-inch (250-mm) ring infiltrometer was about 13 feet (4.0 m) after 7 days.

Tests using the double-ring infiltrometer, a paraffin seal in the 22-inch (560-mm) infiltrometer, and the measurement of flow through concentric areas of the soil core indicated that leakage of water between the infiltrometer wall and the soil was not significant. Lateral movement of the wetting front extended radially 4.7 feet (1.4 m) from the infiltrometer wall.

Laboratory tests of a soil core indicated that the lowest hydraulic conductivity was in the depth interval from 3.9 to 8.6 inches (99 to 218 mm). Soil in this interval, which coincides with the depth of cultivation, evidently limits the rate of infiltration.

Air-permeability tests in the unsaturated deposits gave a hydraulic conductivity of 0.2 foot per day (0.1 m/day) for the depth interval from 57 to 75 feet (17.0 to 23.0 m) as compared to a hydraulic conductivity of 1.9 feet per day (0.6 m/day) for the depth interval from 0 to 5 feet (0 to 1.5 m). J., are in the unconsolidated sediments of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. The major aquifers are the sand and gravel units in the Potomac Group and the Raritan and Magothy Formations, the Cohansey Sand, the Wenonah Formation-Mount Laurel Sand, and the Englishtown Formation. The average ground-water use for Camden County was 68 million gallons per day for 1966. All of the major artesian aquifers have had potentiometric head declines due to ground-water withdrawals. The largest water-level decline occurred in the aquifer system in the Potomac Group and the Raritan and Magothy Formations. At Haddon Heights the potentiometric head declined over 110 feet from 1900 to 1968. In the aquifer in the Wenonah Formation-Mount Laurel Sand the potentiometric head declined 43 feet in about 60 years. The quality of ground water is generally good. In the southeastern portion of the county chloride concentrations in excess of 250 mg/liter occur in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system. The high chloride water has remained in the aquifer system from the time of deposition or has re-entered the system from the ocean after the changes in sea level. The greatest potential of future ground-water development is from the Cohansey Sand which is under water table conditions. It also may have the greatest possibility of local ground-water contamination. Surface water enters the area by the Minnequa Canal and the St. Charles Flood Ditch. The water is stored in Lake Minnequa and other reservoirs. Seepage from St. Charles Reservoirs No. 2 and No. 3 is the major source of water to the alluvial aquifer. The depth of the water table ranges from 0 to 40 feet (0 to 12.2 meters). An 0.5-square-mile (1.3-square-kilometer) area immediately south of Lake Minnequa has a water table less than 6 feet (1.8 meters) below land surface. Lake Minnequa is the principal cause of the shallow water table and resulting waterlogged soil. The bedrock hill east of Lake Minnequa and ground-water flow also contribute to the problem. To eliminate the waterlogging problem, the water table would have to be at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) below land surface. Possible alternatives for eliminating the problem include lowering the water level in Lake Minnequa, placing a network of dewatering wells, or constructing a drainage system in the waterlogged area. Vertical distribution of nitrate, chloride, and total-solids concentrations as shown in cross sections of the study area indicate downward movement of these constituents from tens of feet to a few hundred feet in this time period. Maximum concentrations are in a zone underlying the areas of Westbury, Hicksville, and Plainview. Nitrate (as nitrogen) concentration increased from 4-5 mg/liter to 7 mg/liter in the area of Westbury and from 3 to 10 mg/liter in Plainview during the period 1950-73. Lowest nitrate concentrations are in the area south of a line running from North Merrick to South Farmingdale. Also, during the period analyzed (1950-73), a 10-mg/liter line of equal-chloride concentration on a cross section in the Westbury area moved downward a distance of less than 50 feet, and in the area of Hicksville, nearly 150 feet. Total-solids concentration doubled during the period 1950-73 in the area of Plainview, where maximum downward movement of pollutants was observed. This aquifer commonly yields 500 to 1,000 gallons per minute (32 to 63 litres per second) and may yield as much as 2,500 gallons per minute (158 litres per second). Based on an estimated average storage coefficient of 0.1, the quantity of water stored in the Ogallala aquifer was computed at approximately 50 million acre-feet (6.17 x 101° cubic metres). Local overdevelopment of this water resource has resulted in water-level declines of more than 40 feet (12 metres) from 1966 to 1972 in some areas of concentrated well development. The amount of ground water in storage has been reduced about 2 percent during this period.

Aquifer tests indicate that transmissivity ranges from 500 to 11,800 feet squared per day (46 to 1,100 metres squared per day), the storage coefficient ranges from 0.002 to 0.11, and hydraulic conductivity ranges from 2.1 to 55 feet per day (0.6 to 16.8 metres per day). In addition to these tests, 802 specific-capacity tests were used to extend transmissivity data.

Recharge to the Ogallala aquifer is primarily from precipitation and may be as much as 1 inch (25 millimetres) per year in areas where catchment and percolation are most favorable. Water discharge and total sediment discharge at these stations, representative of the 1943-72 period, were estimated from long-term flow data for nearby gaging stations and water-sediment discharge relations determined for the 1968-73 water years. Most of the total annual sediment discharge at each station occurs during a few days each year. The quantity of sediment transported in a single day often accounts for more than 40 percent of the total annual sediment discharge. There is a possibility of flooding in the Snake River downstream from Jackson Lake Dam in the event of a severe earthquake. Hypothetical floods were routed 38 miles (61 kilometers) downstream from the dam for three cases: (1) Instantaneous destruction of the dam outlet structure, (2) instantaneous destruction of the entire dam, and (3) for waves overtopping the dam without failure of the dam. In each case, a full reservoir was assumed. Hydrographs for outflow from the reservoir for the two cases of dam failure were developed utilizing an accelerated discharge due to the travel of a negative wave through the reservoir, and Muskingum storage routing. For the case of waves overtopping the dam, a 10-foot (3-meter) wave was assumed to be propagated from the upstream end of the reservori. A multiple-linearization technique was used to route the flow through the reach. The model was calibrated from U.S. Geological Survey streamflow records. Most extensive flooding and largest water velocities would occur if the entire dam were destroyed; floods for the other two cases were smaller. An inundation map was prepared from channel conveyance curves and profiles of the water surface. For 257 gaged sites, the magnitudes of floods having recurrence intervals from 2 to 100 years are provided in tables. For ungaged sites, equations, graphs, and maps allow estimation of flood magnitudes. Multiple regression techniques were used to define the relation between flood peaks and seven basin and climatic variables. Drainage area is the most significant variable. Inclusion of the other six variables reduced the standard error of estimate less than 4 percent. Regression equations gave consistently different results for stations in the Coastal Plain than for stations in the mountains and Piedmont. Accordingly, stations were divided into two groups and estimating equations were developed for each geographic area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri7617","usgsCitation":"Jackson, N., 1976, Magnitude and frequency of floods in North Carolina, technique for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on natural streams in North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-17, v, 26 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7617.","productDescription":"v, 26 p. The average concentration of suspended sediment for Wisconsin streams is low in comparison with that of many streams in the United States—110 milligrams per litre for Wisconsin, as compared with 600 milligrams per litre for 50 percent of the United States (Rainwater, 1962). Enough data have been collected at 84 of the 118 sites to calculate an average annual suspended-sediment yield at those sites.
\n
Measured average annual yields range from about 680 tons per square mile (238 tonnes per square kilometre) in the \"Driftless Area\" to 3.1 tons per square mile (1.1 tonnes per square kilometre) in the Northern Highland province. The average suspended-sediment yield for Wisconsin is about 80 tons per square mile per year (28 tonnes per square kilometre per year). Only three areas in the State may be considered to have a sediment problem. They are sections of the \"Driftless Area\" of southwestern Wisconsin, the Lake Superior red-clay area, and areas of expanding urbanization in southeastern Wisconsin.
\n
Sediment-yield prediction equations have been developed for the Northern Highland province, the Central Plain province, the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands province, and the \"Driftless Area\" (Martin, 1932 and Thwaites, 1956). These four equations make it possible to predict average annual suspendedsediment yields at any point on about 95 percent of the streams in the State. The prediction technique involves regression equations that relate average annual suspended-sediment yields to factors, such as topography, soils, land use and cover, stream hydraulics, and climatic conditions. The standard error of estimate for these equations, which only represents the accuracy of an estimated sediment yield at an ungaged site, ranges from 28 to 38 percent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7554","collaboration":"Prepared n cooperation wit the City of Madison, City of Middleton, Douglas County, One of the needs in choosing from among several disposal alternatives is a means of evaluating the influence such an injection will have on the aquifer system. This report describes a mathematical model to accomplish this purpose.

The objective of the contract was to develop a three-dimensional transient mathematical model which would accurately simulate behavior of waste injection into deep saline aquifers. Fluid properties, density and viscosity are functions of pressure, temperature and composition to provide a comprehensive assessment tool. The model is a finite-difference numerical solution of the partial differential equations describing

single phase flow in the aquifer,

energy transport by convection and conduction, and

compositional changes in the aquifer fluid.

The model is not restricted to examining waste disposal operations. It can be used effectively to evaluate fresh water storage in saline aquifers, hot water storage in underground aquifers, salt water intrusion into groundwater flow systems and other similar applications.

The primary advantages of the present model can be summarized as:

The model is user-oriented for easy application to full-scale evaluation needs.

The model is fully three-dimensional and transient.

The model is comprehensive accounting for density and viscosity variations in the aquifer due to temperature or compositional changes.

The model includes the effects of hydrodynamic dispersion in both the temperature and compositional mixing between resident and injected fluids.

The model energy balance includes the effects of pressure. This can be important in deep aquifer systems where the viscous pressure gradient is significant.

The model uses second-order correct space and time approximations to the convective terms. This minimizes the numerical dispersion problem.

The model is extremely flexible in providing a wide choice of boundary conditions. These include natural flow in the aquifer, aquifer influence functions around the perimeter of the grid in recognition that the gridded region does not have no-flow boundaries, heat losses into the overlying or underlying impermeable strata, and the wellbore heat and pressure drop calculations coupled to the aquifer flow equations.

The limitations of the present techniques are:

The use of the second-order correct finite-difference approximations introduces block size and time step restrictions. These restrictions, though considerably less stringent than explicit methods cause, depend upon the magnitude of the dispersivity.

The comprehensive nature of the model makes the computer time and storage requirements significant.

The model, because of its complexity, is not as efficient in reducing down to solve simpler problems as a specially written model would be.

Included in the report are detailed descriptions of the approach used in the model, validation tests of the model, and a typical application of the model. A comparison volume documents the input data requirements, program structure, and an example problem for the model. The dewatering, which is scheduled to last for about 18 months, would cause ground-water levels to be drawn down 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 metres) to an elevation of 4 ft (1.2 m) below Lake Michigan datum under the approximately 7-acre (2.8-square hectometre) construction site, which is about 800 ft (245 m) west of the Lakeshore property. The results of this study have been used by the National Park Service to help evaluate the environmental impact of the dewatering, particularly the effects on the ecosystem of the lakeshore.

The aquifer underlying the area is about 50 ft (15 m) thick and is composed of fine sand with layers of medium sand and gravel. All natural ponds in the area are separated from the aquifer by a low-permeability layer of silty organic muck and clay that ranges from about 1 to 4 ft (0.3 to 1.2 m) in thickness. This pond-bottom material acts only to retard the flow of water either to or from the aquifer beneath the ponds, depending upon the relative head in the pond and the aquifer. Elsewhere, the aquifer is under water-table conditions.

The model analysis indicates that the planned dewatering would cause a drawdown of about 4 ft (1.2 m) under the westernmost pond of the Lakeshore and that this drawdown would cause the pond to go almost dry--less than 0.5 ft (0.15 m) of water remaining in about 1 percent of the pond--under average conditions during the 18-month dewatering period. When water levels are below average, as during late July and early August 1974, the pond would go dry in about 5 1/2 months. However, the pond may not have to go completely dry to damage the ecosystem. If the National Park Service's independent study determines the minimum pond level at which ecosystem damage would be minimized, the models developed in this study could be used to predict the hydrologic conditions necessary to maintain that level.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7682","usgsCitation":"Marie, J.R., 1976, Model analysis of
