Eight tables totaling over 100 pages present data on location, depth, area, lake level, ecological and game-management classification, inflowing and outflowing streams, soils, bedrock type, water added to or take from lake, and reported lake-related problems.</p>\n<p>SYSTEM 2000, a generalized computer data-base management system, was used to organize the data and prepare the tables. SYSTEM 2000 provides powerful capabilities for future retrieval and analyses of the data. The data base is available to potential users so that questions not implicitly anticipated in the preparation of the published tables can be answered readily, and the user can retrieve data in tabular The saturated thickness of the aquifer ranges from 10 to 110 feet (3 to 34 metres); transmissivity ranges from 1 , 000 feet squared per day (93 metres squared per day) to 24,000 feet squared per day (2,230 metres squared per day); and the average storage coefficient is 0 . 11. Seepage from the aquifer into the White River was estimated in November 1974, using data from u.S. Geological Survey gaging stations. A battery-operated peristaltic pump forces the water sample through medical-grade silicone tubing into and through an all-plastic in-line filter which can be backflushed when sediment clogs the filter membrane. Initial filtration rate exceeds 500 milliliter/minute and, because of the backflushing feature, a total time for filtering high-sediment-bearing waster samples is greatly reduced. It was believed that data recorded by the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (Landsat-1) could be processed to yield the needed land-cover information. This study demonstrates that digital computer processing of the spectral information contained in each picture element (pixel) of 1.1 acres (4,500 m2) can produce maps and tables of the areal extent of selected land-cover categories.</p><p>The distribution of water, rock, agricultural areas, evergreens, bare earth, hardwoods, and uncategorized areas, is portrayed on a map of the entire New River basin (1:62,500 scale) and on 15 quadrangles (1:24,000 scale). Although some categories are a mixture of land-cover types, they portray the predominant component named. It also includes a summary of the major inorganic chemical data collected near Dos Rios, at South Fork, and at Scotia since the early 1950's. The recent reconnaissance involved data collection for nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, trace elements, and pesticide compounds in the river at Van Arsdale Dam, near Dos Rios, at Fort Seward, and at Scotia.</p><p>The number of samples collected during the special reconnaissance is somewhat limited, and therefore the data are only an estimate of conditions that presently exist at selected sites in the river. Results indicate that most of the constituents were low in concentration; although some variability was measured for some constituents. Sampling was designed so that samples collected at each site would represent a large range in discharge. Results indicate that discharge was not the singular factor controlling the concentration variance for most constituents. However, the concentrations of total ammonia, phosphorus, arsenic, chromium, copper, and zinc indicated a direct relation with discharge at some sites.</p><p>Statistical analysis indicates that the past sampling program has been adequate to estimate the major chemical constituents of the river. From late 1948 to May 1972, water levels in wells tapping the Floridan aquifer declined as much as 14 feet in northern Clay and St. Johns Counties and more than 20 feet at Jacksonville in Duval County, Florida. These trends will probably continue as withdrawals from the aquifer increase. Water-level depressions exist at Green Cove Springs and Jacksonville because of natural discharge and large scale withdrawals. Withdrawals from wells could result in well interference unless the wells are spaced at least 1,000 ft apart. Two- to four-inch diameter wells drilled 100 ft or less into the aquifer yield 50 to 250 gal/min. Larger and deeper wells yield 1,000 gal/min or more. Hardness of water is generally less than 10 mg/liter. Quality of water from wells sampled over a span of 10 to 30 years has not changed noticeably. Principal recharge to the Floridan occurs southwest of the area in a lake region where rainfall percolates directly into the aquifer.
