The atlas was prepared in cooperation with the Water Management District to provide pertinent water-quality information relating to the objectives of the Florida State Water Resources Act of 1972. Concentrations are plotted at the sampling sites and are the major criteria for determining the extent of concentration ranges. In some cases the drainage basin boundaries are used in defining concentration range boundaries because the quantity and quality of surface runoff is characteristic of the environment of the basin and may be entirely different from the runoff of adjacent basins. Within drainage basins, individual streams and local drainage divides define concentration boundaries. Some areas, although adjacent to each other in the same basin, have entirely different concentration ranges. For example, an area containing dissolved-solids concentrations in the 0-25 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) range may be adjacent to an area in which concentrations exceed 100 mg/1, as in the southwest part of Escambia County. Concentration boundaries in these areas were selected by extending each range about halfway between the two sampling sites, as opposed to grading an intermediate range between them without supporting data. As the data are sparse in many areas, regional concentration patterns are generalized and local variations may be expected to exist.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7616","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Florida Department of Environmental Regulation and Northwest Florida Water Management District","usgsCitation":"Earle, J., 1976, Dissolved solids, hardness, and orthophosphate of surface-water runoff in the Northwest Florida Water Management District: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-16, Report: 3 p.; 3 Plates: 35.07 x 23.64 inches and smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7616.","productDescription":"Report: 3 p.; 3 Plates: 35.07 x 23.64 inches and smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":377050,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377049,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377048,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377047,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157789,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0016/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Northwest Florida Water Management District","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              29.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -84,\n              29.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -84,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.65,\n              29.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a22a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Earle, J.E.","contributorId":41037,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Earle","given":"J.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197226,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

To maintain a minimum dissolved-oxygen concentration of 5 mg/liter during the critical summer low-flow period, 5-day carbonaceous biochemical-oxygen demand in waste discharges should not exceed 5 mg/liter and ammonium nitrogen should not exceed 1.5 mg/liter. Advanced treatment with denitrification is required because stream-reaeration coefficients are not high enough to offset deoxygenation caused by an abundance of attached biological slimes. The slimes apparently consumed dissolved oxygen at a rate of about 110 mg/liter per day at the time of the stream survey. During the critical summer low-flow period, natural stream discharge is very small compared to waste-water discharge , so benefits of dilution are insignificant. An evaluation of two proposed alternative waste-water discharge sites indicated that the present discharge site is hydraulically superior to these sites. Stream-reaeration coefficients used in the study were based on measurements using the radioactive-tracer method. Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor. In general, pumpage has increased at an irregular rate since the completion of the first well to this aquifer in 1886. These withdrawals are responsible for an almost continuous decline of water levels in wells throughout the Memphis area. Water-level data indicate that over the years a broad, regional cone of depression has developed in the potentiometric surface of the Memphis Sand and is centered near downtown Memphis. Areally smaller, subsidiary cones are superimposed upon this regional cone in areas heavily pumped by municipal and industrial wells. Pumpage from the Memphis Sand in Shelby County, Tenn., was 188 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) or 712 Ml/d (million litres per day) in 1975, although a maximum of 190 Mgal/d (719 Ml/d) was reached in 1974.
\n
Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand (\"1,400-foot\" sand) began in 1924 and increased at a yearly rate of about 0.6 Mgal/d (2.3 Ml/d) until 1942. From 1943 to 1962, pumpage averaged about 11.5 Mgal/d (43.5 Ml/d), then was reduced as MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division) discontinued wells that became unserviceable. MLGW ceased pumping from the aquifer in 1974, and pumpage from the remaining industrial wells in Shelby County in 1975 was 4.4 Mgal/d (16.6 Ml/d). Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand generally have risen since 1963. Water l evels in the aquifers in the Memphis area fluctuate inversely with changes in pumping. Analysis of observation-well and pumpage data indicates that local water levels can be altered by changing the pumping rates or by varying the areal distribution of pumping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7667","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Memphis, Memphis Light,  Gas and Water Division","usgsCitation":"Criner, J.H., and Parks, W.S., 1976, Historic water-level changes and pumpage from the principal aquifers of the Memphis area, Tennessee: 1886-1975: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-67, iv, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7667.","productDescription":"iv, 45 p.","numberOfPages":"54","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1886-01-01","temporalEnd":"1975-01-01","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157812,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7667.jpg"},{"id":313231,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0067/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","city":"Memphis","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db6885c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Criner, James H.","contributorId":107258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Criner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Parks, William Scott","contributorId":52148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parks","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Scott","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

It also outlines some of the current problems related to the local geology and hydrology or ones that may arise as a result of urbanization and industrialization of the area. The city is in the Coastal Plain physiographic province and is underlain at shallow depths by sand, clay, silt, gravel, and lignite. These post-Midway strata (Wilcox and younger) make up geologic units belonging to the uppermost Paleocene, Eocene, and Pliocene ( ) Series of the Tertiary System and to the Pleistocene and Holocene Series of the Quaternary System. Environmental problems of immediate or future concern are associated with six general topics: (1) aggregate resources, (2) foundation materials, (3) earthquake hazards, (4) flood hazards, (5) water resources, and (6) solid waste disposal. The lake, an integral part of the Brooker Creek channel, receives overland runoff from cypress swamps, pastures, citrus groves, and lakefront residential areas. The lake, a composite of many coalescing sinkholes, is generally 14 to 16 ft deep and has been dredged in places to 23 ft deep. Since 1960, rainfall in the area shows a cumulative negative departure of 86 in. from the long-term average. The mean annual lake stage in 1973 was the lowest on record. Concurrently, municipal pumpage in the Cosme well field from the Floridan aquifer peaked in 1961 and again in 1973, and in 1972 the potentiometric surface was the lowest since 1960. Comparisons of the hydrographs of lake stage and the potentiometric surface in the Floridan aquifer with rainfall graphs shows that both correspond closely to seasonal rainfall, resulting in the trend of decreasing seasonal maximum levels in the lake and the aquifer. Keystone Lake water quality is adequate for recreation and propagation of wildlife. The original version (WATEQ) was written in 1973 by A. H. Truesdell and B. F. Jones in Programming Language/one (PL/1.) With but a few exceptions, the thermochemical data, speciation, coefficients, and general calculation procedure of WATEQF is identical to the PL/1 version. The study upon which this report is based was designed to make a preliminary evaluation of the available geo-hydrologic data for the Madison Group, which is an extensive aquifer underlying the Powder River Basin. Mex., reached an all time high in 1964 and 1965. Further increases in withdrawal without expansion of pumping facilities will hasten the chemical deterioration of the ground water pumped from the well fields. Saline water in the well-field area is present on the north and west sides of the potable-water area and in a thin shallow zone that overlies the potable-water sands in part of the potable-water area. The latter source is affecting quality of the water produced from most wells. The saturated thickness of material underlying the Boles well field ranges from about 3 ,500 feet in the western part of the field to about 1,200 feet in the eastern part of the field. In the Douglass and San Andres well fields, the saturated thickness ranges from 3,500 feet to about 300 feet. Expansion of the Boles and San Andres well fields to the east and southeast would move the center of pumping away from the highly saline water to the north and west. This would eliminate overpumping of the present wells that has resulted from the expanded facilities at Holloman Air Force Base. The area is in the Mississippi Plateau region of Kentucky and lies within the drainage basin of the Cumberland River and Tradewater River basins. In 1974 municipal water-supply systems utilized about 1,115,000 gal of water per day from Barkley Lake. This use is expected to nearly double by the year 2000. Rural water supplies are obtained primarily from three geologic units - the Ste. Genevieve Limestone and the upper and lower members of the St. Louis Limestone. All three units can yield sufficient water for domestic and stock purposes , but the Ste. Genevieve at Princeton has yielded as much as 150 gal/min to individual wells. The chemical quality of both surface and ground water is generally good, except that the basal part of the lower member of the St. Louis Limestone may yield water high in sulfate and hydrogen sulfide.
