The objectives are to develop a detailed regional synthesis of the sea-floor geology in order to provide information for a wide range of management decisions and to form a basis for further investigations of marine geological processes. In 1995, the USGS, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE), New York District, began to generate reconnaissance maps of the continental shelf seaward of the New York - New Jersey metropolitan area. This mapping encompassed the New York Bight inner-continental shelf, one of the most heavily trafficked and exploited coastal regions in the United States. Contiguous areas of the Hudson Shelf Valley, the largest physiographic feature on this segment of the continental shelf, also were mapped as part of a USGS study of contaminated sediments (Buchholtz ten Brink and others, 1994; 1996).\r\n\r\nThe goal of the reconnaissance mapping was to provide a regional synthesis of the sea-floor geology in the New York Bight area, including: (a) a description of sea-floor morphology; (b) a map of sea-floor sedimentary lithotypes; (c) the geometry and structure of the Cretaceous strata and Quaternary deposits; and (d) the geologic history of the region. Pursuing the course of this mapping effort, we obtained sidescan-sonar images of 100 % of the sea floor in the study area. Initial interpretations of these sidescan data were presented by Schwab and others, (1997a, 1997b, 2000a). High-resolution seismic-reflection profiles collected along each sidescan-sonar line used multiple acoustic sources (e.g., watergun, CHIRP, Geopulse). Multibeam swath-bathymetry data also were obtained for a portion of the study area (Butman and others, 1998;). In this report, we present a series of structural and sediment isopach maps and interpretations of the Quaternary evolution of the inner-continental shelf off the New York - New Jersey metropolitan area based on subbottom, sidescan-sonar, and multibeam-bathymetric data.","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr2002152","isbn":"0607900679","usgsCitation":"Schwab, W.C., Denny, J.F., Foster, D., Lotto, L.L., Allison, M.A., Uchupi, E., Swift, B., Danforth, W.W., Thieler, E., and Butman, B., 2003, High-resolution Quaternary seismic stratigraphy of the New York Bight continental shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-152, DVD-ROM; The relative isolation of Isle Royale (Figure 1), 25 kilometers out in Lake Superior from the Canadian mainland, its generally harsh climate, and its status as a wilderness national park have minimized human influence on the geochemical evolution of its landscape.
\n
USGS sampling on Isle Royale began in 1996 as part of a larger project on the geology of the Midcontinent rift in the Lake Superior region and continued through 2000. Sampling began with collecting bedrock samples to characterize the geochemistry of the volcanic rocks that make up the much of the island, as well as samples representative of the minor native copper mineralization found on the island. Preliminary results from the bedrock study indicated, among other findings, that basaltic bedrock on the island had no detectable mercury, but that there was an association between native copper mineralization and trace amounts of mercury (Cannon and Woodruff, 1999). This finding and the recognition by the National Park Service that 6 of 32 inland lakes on Isle Royale have mercury levels in game fish that exceed State of Michigan acceptable levels for human consumption (Kallemeyn, 2000) resulted in renewed sampling on the island focused more on environmental issues.
\n
To evaluate atmospheric inputs of mercury and other elements to soil geochemistry, regionally distributed samples of both soils and lichens were collected as paired samples across the entire island. At each soil sample site, three epiphytic (grows in trees) lichen species, Evernia mesomorpha, Hypogymnia plysodes, and Parmelia sucata, were always collected. At some sites Cladina rangiferina, a lichen that grows on bare bedrock and soil surfaces, was also collected. The occurrence of Cladina rangiferina on the island is somewhat limited, and so this lichen species was not collected at all sites.
\n
A high density of soil samples was collected within three individual watersheds (Sargent Lake, Lake Wagejo, and Lake Richie) for a localized study that evaluated the terrestrial distribution of mercury and other elements of environmental concern. These lakes were chosen using data from Kallemeyn (2000) that showed that Sargent Lake and Lake Wagejo have high mercury in fish, whereas Lake Richie, which is similar in size to Sargent Lake, does not. As part of this study on the terrestrial contribution of mercury to lakes, long cores of lake sediments were recovered from Sargent Lake and Lake Richie using a modified Livingston piston sampler.
\n
For an ancillary study that evolved from the study on the distribution of mercury in certain watersheds, some soil samples were collected to evaluate the impact of forest fire on soil geochemistry, deliberately sampling within and outside areas on the island that burned in severe forest fires in 1936. To complete bedrock sampling on the island, rock samples from the Copper Harbor Formation, a sedimentary unit that occurs on the southeastern part of the island were collected in 1999.
\n
This report presents all the geochemical data from samples collected by the USGS during this period (Figures 1 and 2). A number of reports presenting data interpretation are in preparation
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, These are the Brookian Topset Structural Play and the Torok Structural\r\nPlay, located in the Brooks Range foothills and the southern part of the coastal plain,\r\nwithin the Tertiary-age frontal part of the Jurassic to Tertiary Brooks Range orogenic\r\nbelt. A new regional structural interpretation, developed through regional seismic\r\nanalyses, reconnaissance field investigations, and new thermal constraints, guided the\r\ngeologic evaluation and risking of these plays. Volumetric parameters were derived from\r\nseismic reflection data, well data and oil and gas field analogs.\r\nThe fundamental elements of the Brookian Topset Structural Play, exemplified by\r\nthe undeveloped Umiat oil field, include: (1) reservoirs in Nanushuk Group and\r\nuppermost Torok Formation shallow-marine to nonmarine sandstones draped over\r\nanticlines caused by structural thickening in underlying Torok mudstones; (2) seals\r\nprovided by overlying shale drapes in the Nanushuk, and locally by thrust faults; (3)\r\nTorok, gamma-ray-zone (GRZ) or pebble shale source rocks; (4) remigration of\r\nhydrocarbons from early formed (Late Cretaceous) stratigraphic traps disrupted by 60 Ma\r\nthrusting, into newly formed structural traps. The 60 Ma thrusting was probably\r\naccompanied by new generation and migration of natural gas resulting from late\r\nstructural thickening and tectonic loading. Subsurface data from the Umiat field and\r\nother seismic reflection data within the play area indicate that the structural traps are\r\ncommonly compartmentalized by thrust faults.\r\nThe fundamental elements of the Torok Structural Play, exemplified by the\r\nundeveloped East Kurupa gas accumulation just south of NPRA, include: (1) reservoirs\r\nin lower Torok Formation basin-floor sandstones, and perhaps in small sandstone bodies\r\nintercalated with middle to upper Torok mudstones; (2) structural traps provided by\r\nfolded sandstone bodies above thrust faults within a pervasively deformed passive-roof\r\nduplex beneath the foothills and a less-strongly deformed domain to the north; (3) seals\r\nprovided by Torok mudstone, both stratigraphically above the sandstone bodies and\r\nsmeared along bounding thrust faults; (4) Torok, GRZ, pebble shale, or Kingak Shale\r\nsource rocks; (5) a migration and charging scenario similar to that of the Brookian Topset\r\nStructural Play. According to our estimates, the Brookian Topset Structural Play contains 137\r\nmillion barrels of technically recoverable oil and 10.6 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of\r\ntechnically recoverable, non-associated natural gas, with both values representing the\r\nmean estimate (expected value). The Torok Structural Play contains about 35 million\r\nbarrels of technically recoverable oil and 17.9 TCF of technically recoverable, nonassociated\r\nnatural gas.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03266","usgsCitation":"Potter, C.J., and Moore, T.E., 2003, Brookian structural plays in the National Petroleum Reserve, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-266, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03266.","productDescription":"49 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179410,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4403,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/of03-266/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fb343","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Potter, Christopher J. 0000-0002-2300-6670 cpotter@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2300-6670","contributorId":1026,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Potter","given":"Christopher","email":"cpotter@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243453,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moore, Thomas E. 0000-0002-0878-0457 tmoore@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0878-0457","contributorId":1033,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Thomas","email":"tmoore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":243454,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The map is based on water-level measurements in 69 wells. The highest measured water level was 108 feet above sea level near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in northern Anne Arundel County. From this area, the potentiometric surface declined towards large well fields at Severndale, Arnold, and Annapolis. The measured ground-water levels declined to 87 feet below sea level at Severndale, 39 feet below sea level at Arnold, and 43 feet below sea level a few miles west of Annapolis. There was also a cone of depression covering a large area in Charles County that includes Waldorf, LaPlata, Indian Head, and the Morgantown power plant. The ground-water levels measured were as low as 191 feet below sea level at Waldorf, 131 feet below sea level at LaPlata, 115 feet below sea level at Indian Head, and 86 feet below sea level at the Morgantown power plant.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003258","usgsCitation":"Curtin, S.E., Andreasen, D., and Wheeler, J.C., 2003, Potentiometric Surface of the Lower Patapsco Aquifer in Southern Maryland, September 2002: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-258, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003258.","productDescription":"HTML Document","temporalStart":"2002-09-01","temporalEnd":"2002-09-30","costCenters":[{"id":41514,"text":"Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":176423,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9039,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr03-258/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Maryland","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.33333333333333,38 ], [ -77.33333333333333,39.5 ], [ -76,39.5 ], [ -76,38 ], [ -77.33333333333333,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db6832d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtin, Stephen E. securtin@usgs.gov","contributorId":3703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtin","given":"Stephen","email":"securtin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andreasen, David C.","contributorId":59003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andreasen","given":"David C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243856,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wheeler, Judith C.","contributorId":13620,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"Judith","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243855,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Most significant is a tripling in the use of glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl]glycin). Over this same time period (19972001), atrazine use increased by 20 percent and acetochlor use increased by 10 percent, while cyanazine use decreased by 99 percent, alachlor use decreased by 70 percent, and metolachlor use decreased by 55 percent. Previous studies have documented that herbicide flushes occur in midwestern streams during runoff events for several weeks to several months following application, and that herbicide concentrations in midwestern streams during flushing events are related to rates of herbicide use.
\n
The objective of this study is to determine the distribution of glyphosate and its primary transformation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in midwestern streams during post-application and harvest-season runoff events. Water samples will be collected in 2002 during two post-herbicide-application runoff events and one harvest-season runoff event from 53 sites on streams in the Midwestern United States. All samples will be analyzed at the U.S. Geological Survey Organic Geochemistry Research Laboratory in Lawrence, Kansas, for glyphosate and 20 other herbicides. Studies of satellite images suggest that hundreds of millions of tons of dust are trans-ported annually at relatively low altitudes across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and southeastern United States. The dust emanates from the expanding Sahara/Sahel desert region in Africa and carries a wide variety of bacteria and fungi.\r\n\r\nThe U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the NASA/Goddard Spaceflight Center, is conducting a study to identify microbes--bacteria, fungi, viruses--transported across the Atlantic in African soil dust. Each year, millions of tons of desert dust blow off the west African coast and ride the trade winds across the ocean, affecting the entire Caribbean basin, as well as the southeastern United States. Of the dust reaching the U.S., Florida receives about 50 percent, while the rest may range as far north as Maine or as far west as Colorado. The dust storms can be tracked by satellite and take about one week to cross the Atlantic.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr0328","usgsCitation":"Kellogg, C.A., and Griffin, D.W., 2003, African dust carries microbes across the ocean: are they affecting human and ecosystem health? It is readily recognized on 10 km upward-continued aeromagnetic maps of the state. The arcuate SAMT ranges from 30 to 100 km wide and extends in two separate segments along the southern Alaska margin for about 1200 km onshore (from near the Alaska/Canada border at about 60 degrees north latitude to the Bering Sea) and may continue an additional 500 km or more offshore (in the southern Bering Sea). The SAMT is bordered to the south by the southern Alaska magnetic high (SAMH) produced by strongly magnetic crust and to the north by a magnetically quiet zone that reflects weakly magnetic interior Alaska crust. Geophysically, the SAMT is more than just the north-side dipole low associated with the SAMH. Several modes of analysis, including examination of magnetic potential (pseudogravity) and profile modeling, indicate that the source of this magnetic trough is a discrete, crustal-scale body. Geologically, the western portion of the SAMT coincides to a large degree with collapsed Mesozoic Kahiltna flysch basin. This poster presents our geophysical evidence for the extent and geometry of this magnetic feature as well as initial geological synthesis and combined geologic/geophysical modeling to examine the implications of this feature for the broad scale tectonic framework of southern Alaska.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr03200","usgsCitation":"Saltus, R.W., Hudson, T.L., and Wilson, F.H., 2003, Geophysical identification and geological Implications of the southern Alaska magnetic trough (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-200, Poster, 72 by 36 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03200.","productDescription":"Poster, 72 by 36 inches","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":178022,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4554,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr-03-200","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c4bc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Saltus, R. Measured ground-water levels were as low as 81 feet below sea level in the Waldorf area and 75 feet below sea level at Chalk Point.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2003256","usgsCitation":"Curtin, S.E., Andreasen, D., and Wheeler, J.C., 2003, Potentiometric Surface of the Magothy Aquifer in Southern Maryland, September 2002: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-256, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2003256.","productDescription":"HTML Document","temporalStart":"2002-09-01","temporalEnd":"2002-09-30","costCenters":[{"id":41514,"text":"Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":176425,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9041,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/ofr03-256/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.33333333333333,38 ], [ -77.33333333333333,39.5 ], [ -76,39.5 ], [ -76,38 ], [ -77.33333333333333,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db68323e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtin, Stephen E. securtin@usgs.gov","contributorId":3703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtin","given":"Stephen","email":"securtin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andreasen, David C.","contributorId":59003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andreasen","given":"David C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wheeler, Judith C.","contributorId":13620,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"Judith","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
