This proposed operating plan could be followed successfully most of the time. Some periods of low flow, mainly in winter, would require drawdowns below the minimum stage to maintain minimum discharge. Occasional large floods occurring about once in 5 years would require surcharges over the maximum stage to limit the maximum discharge. Samples of oil shale from two drill cores and one composite sample from the Colony mine were split and studied by X-ray diffraction methods to determine their bulk mineralogy. Oil yield data were obtained for these samples by conventional Fischer assay analysis and samples of the spent oil shale were studied by X-ray diffraction to determine the changes which resulted from pyrolysis. The amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from 31 spent oil-shale samples were determined using hot distilled water, hot 0.1M KOH, and hot 0.5M KOH as solvents. Extractable Al<sub>2</sub>O and SiO<sub>2</sub> were also determined for the 31 spent oil-shale samples using hot 0.1M NaOH and hot 0.5M NaOH.</p><p>Correlation of the relative abundance of analcime--Na[Al, Si<sub>2</sub>O<sub>6</sub>]. H<sub>2</sub>0-- in raw oil-shale samples with the amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extracted from pyrolyzed oil shale demonstrates that analcime contributes significantly to all of these elements after it has been subjected to pyrolysis. Because of the large contribution of SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from pyrolyzed analcime-bearing oil shale using caustic solvents, there may be significant problems in obtaining leachates high in Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>content and low in SiO<sub>2</sub> content where analcime is present with dawsonite--NaAl(OH)<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. This consideration is important to assessment of potential aluminum resources in oil shale. In addition, the concentrations of water soluble Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> in analcime-bearing pyrolyzed oil shale are expected to be significantly greater than from oil shale which is free of analcime and dawsonite and this factor reflects the importance of oil-shale mineralogy to aspects of spent shale disposal</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75156","usgsCitation":"Desborough, G.A., Mountjoy, W., and Frost, I.C., 1975, Influence of caustic and water leaching on analcime-bearing and analcime-free pyrolyzed oil shale from the Green River Formation, Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-156, iii, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75156.","productDescription":"iii, 28 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":430529,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0156/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147417,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0156/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -108.75,39 ], [ -108.75,40.25 ], [ -107.75,40.25 ], [ -107.75,39 ], [ -108.75,39 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee773","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Desborough, George A.","contributorId":101661,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Desborough","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167580,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mountjoy, Wayne","contributorId":21973,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mountjoy","given":"Wayne","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167578,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frost, Irving C.","contributorId":28253,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frost","given":"Irving","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167579,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. Except for water in the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys and in the outcrop areas of the bedrock aquifers, the groundwater is generally of poor chemical quality. Owing to the generally poor chemical quality of water and low yields to wells, an increase in the use of ground water from the consolidated rocks is improbable. </p><p>The unconsolidated rocks in the Verdigris River basin receive about 166,000 acre-feet of recharge annually, and about 1 million acre-fee of water is in temporary storage in the deposits. In 1968 about 4,200 acre-feet of ground was withdrawn for all uses. About 800 acre-feet of ground and 5,000 acre-feet of surface water were pumped for irrigation of 5,300 acres of cropland. The total annual withdrawal of ground water for irrigation may be 2,000 acre-feet by the year 2000.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75365","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Fader, S.W., and Morton, R.B., 1975, Ground water in the Verdigris River basin, Kansas and Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-365, Report: 26 p.; 4 Plates: 30.71 x 24.23 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75365.","productDescription":"Report: 26 p.; 4 Plates: 30.71 x 24.23 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":346190,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143595,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":346191,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346192,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346193,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":346194,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0365/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Verdigris River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.15234375,\n              38.38042167460681\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.4874267578125,\n              38.12591462924157\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.5093994140625,\n              37.09462150015557\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.4324951171875,\n              36.35052700542763\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.3446044921875,\n              36.09349937380574\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.0589599609375,\n              35.85343961959182\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.7403564453125,\n              35.79553849799263\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.4217529296875,\n              35.79553849799263\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.20751953125,\n              35.991340960635405\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.020751953125,\n              36.34610265300638\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.042724609375,\n              36.721273880045004\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.152587890625,\n              37.330856613297144\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.1910400390625,\n              37.70555348721583\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.361328125,\n              38.199338565983844\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.69091796875,\n              38.30718056188316\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.8612060546875,\n              38.371808917147554\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.15234375,\n              38.38042167460681\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d822","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fader, Stuart Wesley","contributorId":68742,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fader","given":"Stuart","email":"","middleInitial":"Wesley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Morton, Robert B.","contributorId":50899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Morton","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158305,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Circulation barely reached hurricane intensity for a brief period in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm crossed the Florida Panhandle coastline on June 19, 1972, and followed an unusually extended overland trajectory combining with an extratropical system to bring very heavy rain from the Carolinas northward to New York. This torrential rain followed the abnormally wet May weather in the Middle Atlantic States and set the stage for the subsequent major flooding. The record-breaking floods occurred in the Middle Atlantic States in late June and early July 1972. Many streams in the affected area experienced peak discharges several times the previous maxima of record. Estimated recurrence intervals of peak flows at many gaging stations on major rivers and their tributaries exceeded 100 years. The suspended-sediment concentration and load of most flooded streams were also unusually high. The widespread flooding from this storm caused Agnes to be called the most destructive hurricane in United States history, claiming 117 lives and causing damage estimated at $3.1 billion in 12 States. Damage was particularly high in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The detailed life history of Hurricane Agnes, including the tropical depression and tropical storm stages, is traced. Associated rainfalls are analyzed and compared with climatologic recurrence values. These are followed by a detailed description of the flood and streamflows of each affected basin. A summary of peak stages and discharges and comparison data for previous floods at 989 stations are presented. Deaths and flood damage estimates are compiled. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp924","usgsCitation":"Bailey, J.F., Patterson, J.L., and Paulhus, J.L., 1975, Hurricane Agnes rainfall and floods, June-July 1972: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 924, Report: vii, 403 p.; 1 Plate: 30.00 x 42.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp924.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 403 p.; 1 Plate: 30.00 x 42.00 inches","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":118423,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0924/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32286,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0924/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":32285,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0924/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":104754,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_5110.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"5110"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -79.17353337473213,\n              43.938644324808564\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.88780186579464,\n              35.83761262246428\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.21324700938271,\n              35.862166390663944\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.44403607851471,\n              42.89279462125202\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.17353337473213,\n              43.938644324808564\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a52e4b07f02db62a4f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bailey, James F.","contributorId":91834,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151478,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Patterson, James Lee","contributorId":24329,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Patterson","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"Lee","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151476,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Paulhus, Joseph Louis Hornore","contributorId":33705,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paulhus","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"Louis Hornore","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151477,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The area is essentially urban, although the towns in the upper basin still retain some rural character. The population of the middle and upper parts increased 80 percent between 1950 and 1970, while the population in the lower part declined 4 percent. This atlas summarizes the water resources and associated water problems of the area. The investigation upon which the atlas is based was made from 1968 to 1971 and is part of a series covering the major river basins in Massachusetts. The study area includes 251 sq mi of drainage area above the gaging station at Waltham. The designated area, offshore of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, encompasses parts of three physiographic provinces: the Continental Shelf, the Florida-Hatteras Slope, and the Blake Plateau. </p><p>The structural framework of the U.3. South Atlantic region is dominated by the Southeast Georgia Embayment --an east-plunging depression recessed into the Atlantic Coastal Plain and shelf between Cape Fear, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida. The embayment is bounded to the north by the Cape Fear Arch and to southeast by the Peninsular Arch. </p><p>Refraction data indicate a minor basement(?) ridge beneath the outer shelf between 30° and 32°N at 80°W. Drill hole data also suggest a gentle fold or accretionary structure (reef?) off the east coast of Florida. Several other structural features have been identified by refraction and reflection techniques and drilling. These are the Yamacraw Uplift, Burton High, Stone Arch, and the Suwannee Channel. </p><p>Gravity and magnetic anomalies within the area probably result from emplacement of magma bodies along linear features representing fundamental crustal boundaries. Of these anomalies, the most prominent, is a segment of the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly which crosses the coast at Brunswick, Georgia. This anomaly has been interpreted as representing an ancient continental boundary where two formerly separate continental plates collided and were welded together. </p><p>There may be as much as 5,000 m of sedimentary rocks in the Southeast Georgia Embayment out to the 600 m isobath. Basement rocks beneath the Southeast Georgia Embayment are expected to be similar to those exposed in the Appalachian Piedmont province. Triassic deposits are likely to exist beneath the inner Continental Shelf, and probably consist of nonmarine arkosic sandstones, shales, basalt flows, and diabase intrusions deposited in relatively narrow northeast-trending grabens. Jurassic marine carbonates in the Bahamas grade northward to carbonates, shales, sand, and arkose in North Carolina. Salt may be present in the basal Jurassic section in the Southeast Georgia Embayment. Up to 4,000 m of Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous rocks are expected out to the 600 m water depth. Lower Cretaceous rocks in southern Florida are shallow-water marine limestone and dolomites with beds of anhydrite. In coastal North Carolina the Lower Cretaceous is a marine section made up of shales, sand, and sandy limestone. The Upper Cretaceous is composed almost entirely of marine carbonates in southern Florida grading northward to nonmarine to marginal marine, sandstones and shales with minor amounts of carbonates. In general, Upper Cretaceous rocks will probably maintain a fairly constant thickness (600 m) on the Continental Shelf and grade downdip from terrigeneous sands and shales to more marine chalks, limestones, and dolomites. The Cenozoic rocks are predominantly shallow-water marine carbonates in Florida grading northward into a marginal marine to marine clastic facies composed of sands, marls, and limestones. The offshore Cenozoic section is expected to range in thickness from 600 to 1100 m. </p><p><br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75411","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1975, Sediments, structural framework, petroleum potential, environmental conditions, and operational considerations of the United States South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-411, Report: vii, 262 p.; 1 Sheet: 16.88 x 32.94 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75411.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 262 p.; 1 Sheet: 16.88 x 32.94 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":36147,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36148,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141028,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0411/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":404154,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15175.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida, Georgia, South Carolina","otherGeospatial":"South Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.55224609374999,\n              33.8430453147447\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.12353515625,\n              33.4039312002347\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.22241210937499,\n              33.09614359735857\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.837646484375,\n              32.713355353177555\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.1285400390625,\n              31.522361470421437\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.419677734375,\n              30.755998458321667\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.243896484375,\n              29.850173125689896\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.76599121093749,\n              28.86872905602898\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.452880859375,\n              28.70986084394286\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.07958984375,\n              28.748396571187406\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.6895751953125,\n              29.176145182559758\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.937744140625,\n              33.137551192346145\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.6793212890625,\n              33.82023008524739\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.92626953125,\n              33.87041555094183\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.02490234375,\n              33.8339199536547\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.55224609374999,\n              33.8430453147447\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ae4b07f02db5fbad0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528874,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report, which broadly outlines the water resources of the Toppenish Creek basin, has been developed as part of the cooperative study by the Tribal Council of the Yakima Indian Nation and the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Precipitation averages about 20 inches a year over the basin but only about 2 inches fall during the April-September growing season. However, diversions from the Yakima River make the Toppenish Creek valley one of the best agricultural areas in the State.</p><p>Ground water in the basin occurs in three distinct units: the basalt, old valley fill deposits, and young valley fill deposits. Each unit is capable of yielding more than 1,000 gallons per minute to properly constructed wells. Water levels in wells tapping the young valley fill are higher under present (1974) irrigation conditions than they were in the past, but some water-level declines have occurred in the old valley fill in response to pumping. Water levels in the basalt wells in some areas have been lowered as much as 80 feet by pumping during the past 15 years. Some additional pumping in these areas can be allowed without lowering the water level more than a few feet if the amount of pumpage and spacing of wells are carefully controlled.</p><p>The young valley fill in the eastern part of the lower valley is the best source of ground water in the basin. The zones of coarse sand and gravel to depths of about 150 feet in this area can produce large quantities of water. Irrigation water, from the Yakima River which seeps into the ground, yearly builds up this ground-water supply. About 120,000 acre-feet of water goes into temporary storage each irrigation season in the young valley fill.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7519","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Yakima Tribal Council","usgsCitation":"Gregg, D.O., and Laird, L.B., 1975, A general outline of the water resources of the Toppenish Creek basin, Yakima Indian Reservation, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-19, v, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7519.","productDescription":"v, 37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431149,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0019/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145251,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0019/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Toppenish Creek basin, Yakima Indian Reservation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1,\n              46.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1,\n              46.6\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.6\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.1\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae80a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gregg, Dean O.","contributorId":28577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gregg","given":"Dean","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168603,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laird, Leslie Bostwick","contributorId":101251,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laird","given":"Leslie","email":"","middleInitial":"Bostwick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The depth to water in the area studied ranged from about 50 feet (15 metres) to more than 200 feet (61 metres). Dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 500 milligrams per litre exist in the shallow aquifers in the eastern and southern parts of the study area. The permeability of the shallow sediments ranges from 15 to 50 feet per day (5 to 15 metres per day). The eastern part of the area is underlain by fine-grained sediments that effectively separate the deep and shallow aquifers and would not be conducive to artificial recharge. In the western part of the area, sediments in the upper 100 feet (30 metres) are primarily sand. Considering all but economic factors, the most hydrologically favorable area for recharge is west of Washington Street and north of the Whitewater River.</p><p>Using three spreading pits on a rotating basis and assuming long-term infiltration rates of 2 feet per day (0.6 metre per day), an area of 33 acres (13 hectares) would be required to infiltrate 8,000 acre-feet (9.9 cubic hectometres) per year. No attempt has been made to consider most aspects of the legal, environmental, and institutional limitations in exploiting these resouces. In general, the average heat content of rocks is considerably higher in the Western United States than in the East. This also helps to explain why the most favorable hydrothermal convection systems and the hot young igneous systems occur in the West. Resources of the most attractive identified convection systems (excluding national parks) with predicted reservoir temperatures above 150 deg C have an estimated electrical production potential of about 8,000 megawatt century, or about 26,000 megawatt for 30 years. Assumptions in this conversion are: (1) one-half of the volume of the heat reservoirs is porous and permeable, (2) one-half of the heat of the porous, permeable parts is recoverable in fluids at the wellheads, and (3) the conversion efficiency of heat in wellhead fluids to electricity ranges from about 8 to 20 percent , depending on temperature and kind of fluid (hot water or steam). The estimated overall efficiency of conversion of heat in the ground to electrical energy generally ranges from less than 2 to 5 percent, depending on type of system and reservoir temperature. Records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States also are included. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S, Geological Survey under the direction of W. E. Hale, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in New Mexico. Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series, and since then, are in a 5-year series. More information is given under heading, \"Publications\" on page 8. Beginning with the 1961 water year, surface-water records have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State boundary basis.
