Some streams containing selenium flow into the North Platte River upstream from several municipalities that obtain water from the river and the alluvium along the river. \r\n\r\nThe area of this investigation includes about 725 square miles in Natrona County in central Wyoming. Study effort was most intensive within the area bounded by the North Platte River, Casper Creek, and Casper Canal, the approximate boundaries of the Kendrick irrigation project. \r\n\r\nGeologic formations in the area contain selenium that may have been derived from deposits of seleniferous material or from volcanic emanations brought down by rain. Formations older than Cretaceous age were not considered as important sources of selenium in waters of the area, because no irrigation water is applied to areas underlain by these rocks. The selenium concentration in 82 samples of Cretaceous rocks ranged from less than 10 to 4,200 ?g/kg (micrograms per kilogram of sample); no correlation was found between selenium concentration and the depth at which the sample was collected. Of four samples of Tertiary rocks analyzed, three contained no selenium and one had a selenium concentration of 40 ?g/kg. The selenium concentration in 93 samples of Quaternary rocks ranged from less than 10 to 52.0 ?g/kg, and the highest selenium concentration was generally found at depths less than 4 feet. No geologic formation has consistently high concentrations of selenium, but high concentrations were found at points throughout the study area. Probably the rocks in any locality could be the source of selenium in the water in the surrounding vicinity. \r\n\r\nThe selenium concentration in water from some wells fluctuates widely. It is concluded that the selenium concentrations in the ground water in these areas have not reached a state of equilibrium in the aquifer. It is possible that such nonequilibrium conditions exist in aquifers throughout much of the area. If so, statements in this report concerning- trends of selenium concentration in ground water are somewhat speculative.Poison Spring Creek, Poison Spider Creek, Oregon Trail Drain, and Casper Creek are the principal tributaries that contribute selenium to the North Platte River. The selenium load, expressed in pounds per day, in Poison Spring Creek and Poison Spider Creek decreased slightly during the first year of sampling and increased slightly during the second year of sampling. The selenium load in Oregon Trail Drain is greatest in late winter and early spring during the period of low flow; the selenium load in Casper Creek varies, but shows no correlation with season and little correlation with stream discharge. The North Platte River above and below the irrigation project had consistently low selenium concentrations, 10 ?g/l (micrograms per liter) or less, in the period April 1968 through June 1969. The total selenium load contributed to the North Platte River from tributaries in the study area is almost undetectable after mixing with the river water. \r\n\r\nFrom the fall of 1968 .to the spring of 1969, results of water sampling in areas influenced by irrigation show that the selenium concentration increased at 29 percent of the locations (average net increase of 64 ?g/l), decreased at 34 percent of the locations (average net decrease of 80 ?g/l), and had little (10 ?g/l or .less) or no change at 37 percent of the locations. \r\n\r\nAs a comparison, results of water sampling in areas not influenced by irrigation showed that the selenium concentration increased at 2 percent of the locations (average net increase of 30 ?g/l), decreased at 26 percent of the locations (average net decrease of 30?g/l), and had little or no change at 72 percent of the locations. Three geohydrologic terranes, which underlie large parts of the basin, are described in terms of their aquifer characteristics and of the magnitude and duration of their base runoff: (1) fractured rock having a thin regolith, (2) fractured rock having a thick regolith, and (3) carbonate rock. \r\n\r\nCrystalline rock in the mountainous part of the Blue Ridge province and shale with tight sandstone in the folded Appalachians are covered with thin regolith. Water is stored in and moves through fairly unmodified fractures. Average transmissivity (T) is estimated to be 150 feet squared per day, and average storage coefficient (S), 0.005. Base runoff declines rapidly from its high levels during spring and is poorly sustained during the summer season of high evapotranspiration. The rocks in this geohydrologic terrane are the least effective in the basin for the development of water supplies and as a source of dry-weather streamflow. \r\n\r\nCrystalline and sedimentary rocks in the Piedmont province and in the lowland part of the Blue Ridge province are covered with thick regolith. Water is stored in and moves through both the regolith and the underlying fractured rock. Estimated average values for aquifer characteristics are T, 200 feet squared per day, and S, 0.01. Base runoff is better sustained in this terrane than in the thin-regolith terrane and on the average .is about twice as great. \r\n\r\nCarbonate rock, in which fractures have been widened selectively by solution, especially near streams, has estimated average aquifer characteristics of T, 500 feet squared per day, and S, 0.03-0.04. This rock is the most effective in the basin in terms of water supply and base runoff. Where its fractures have not been widened by solution, the carbonate rock is a fractured-rock aquifer much like the noncarbonate rock. At low values the frequency of specific capacities of wells is much the same in all rocks in the basin, but high values of specific capacity are as much as 10 times more frequent in carbonate rock than in noncarbonate rock. Nearly all the large springs and high-capacity wells in the basin are in carbonate rock. Base runoff from the carbonate rock is better sustained during dry weather and on the average is about three times as great as base runoff from fractured rock having a thin regolith. \r\n\r\nThe potential role of these water-bearing terranes in water management probably lies in the local development of large water supplies from the carbonate rock and in the possible manipulation of underground storage for such purposes as providing space for artificial recharge of ground water and providing ground water to be used for the augmentation of low streamflow. The chief water-quality problems in the basin--acidic mine-drainage water in the western part of the basin, local highly mineralized ground water, and the high nitrate content of ground water in some of the densely populated parts of the basin--would probably have little adverse affect on the use of ground water for low-flow augmentation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The depth to water in the area studied ranged from about 50 feet (15 metres) to more than 200 feet (61 metres). Dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 500 milligrams per litre exist in the shallow aquifers in the eastern and southern parts of the study area. The permeability of the shallow sediments ranges from 15 to 50 feet per day (5 to 15 metres per day). The eastern part of the area is underlain by fine-grained sediments that effectively separate the deep and shallow aquifers and would not be conducive to artificial recharge. The goal in operating these networks has been to obtain sufficient data for estimating flood frequency at ungaged sites with the equivalent accuracy expected from 10 years of observed flood records. In some areas the networks have accumulated sufficient data to satisfy these accuracy goals. A review of these networks, looking toward possible reduction of the number of gages, is now timely. Continued operation of a few selected gages may be desirable to provide a longer time-sample base for improving the flood-frequency estimating equation and(or) to expand the area over which the equations apply.

In 1974, Thomas Maddock III developed a rational method for selecting gages to be retained in a reduced hydrologic network. This method of network analysis seeks the optimum set of gages to be retained for a given level of annual operating costs with the information content of the reduced network being the factor optimized. Application of Maddock's method demonstrated that a considerable number of gages could be eliminated from a network without grossly decreasing its information content.

Maddock's method of analysis is described in detail for a hypothetical network of gages. The method also is applied to actual networks in Montana, Illinois, and Georgia.

The analysis of networks in Montana illustrates the basic approach to selecting an optimal subset from the existing set of gages. The Illinois analysis demonstrated that by retaining only 26 percent of the gages, nearly 63 percent of the original information is retained in the reduced network. Application of the procedure shows how the design of networks in Georgia may be modified because of hydrologic considerations to meet budgetary constraints.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7530","usgsCitation":"Carrigan, P.H., and Golden, H.G., 1975, Optimizing information transfer in a stream-gaging network: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-30, v, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7530.","productDescription":"v, 25 p.","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157924,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0030/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349792,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aefe4b07f02db69138d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carrigan, Philip Hadley Jr.","contributorId":86768,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carrigan","given":"Philip","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Hadley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196506,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Golden, Harold G.","contributorId":103244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Golden","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196507,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This report, which broadly outlines the water resources of the Toppenish Creek basin, has been developed as part of the cooperative study by the Tribal Council of the Yakima Indian Nation and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Precipitation averages about 20 inches a year over the basin but only about 2 inches fall during the April-September growing season. However, diversions from the Yakima River make the Toppenish Creek valley one of the best agricultural areas in the State.

Ground water in the basin occurs in three distinct units: the basalt, old valley fill deposits, and young valley fill deposits. Each unit is capable of yielding more than 1,000 gallons per minute to properly constructed wells. Water levels in wells tapping the young valley fill are higher under present (1974) irrigation conditions than they were in the past, but some water-level declines have occurred in the old valley fill in response to pumping. Water levels in the basalt wells in some areas have been lowered as much as 80 feet by pumping during the past 15 years. Some additional pumping in these areas can be allowed without lowering the water level more than a few feet if the amount of pumpage and spacing of wells are carefully controlled.

The young valley fill in the eastern part of the lower valley is the best source of ground water in the basin. The zones of coarse sand and gravel to depths of about 150 feet in this area can produce large quantities of water. Irrigation water, from the Yakima River which seeps into the ground, yearly builds up this ground-water supply. About 120,000 acre-feet of water goes into temporary storage each irrigation season in the young valley fill.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7519","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Yakima Tribal Council","usgsCitation":"Gregg, D.O., and Laird, L.B., 1975, A general outline of the water resources of the Toppenish Creek basin, Yakima Indian Reservation, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-19, v, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7519.","productDescription":"v, 37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431149,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0019/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145251,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0019/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Toppenish Creek basin, Yakima Indian Reservation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1,\n              46.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1,\n              46.6\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.6\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.25,\n              46.1\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae80a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gregg, Dean O.","contributorId":28577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gregg","given":"Dean","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168603,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laird, Leslie Bostwick","contributorId":101251,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laird","given":"Leslie","email":"","middleInitial":"Bostwick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The first phase of that program, a study of coastal drift off south Texas, was reported by Hunter and others (1974). They reported on a three-year program of seasonal releases of both bottom and surface drifters on the south Texas shelf; this study confirmed the hypothesis that the yearly cycle of coastwise water movement is largely controlled by seasonally changing winds. They also showed complex convergences of both surface and bottom waters which shift along the coast, as well as a layered drift structure which periodically directs surface and bottom waters in opposite directions. Results of several drift studies in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico which preceded this study are summarized by Hunter and others (1974).

The second phase began in July 1973, when the study was shifted to the coast off north-central Texas . Wells tapping some limestone and dolomite aquifers produce as much as 1.4 mgd (million gallons per day). Wells completed in sandstone of the Pottsville Formation underlying lower topographic areas may produce as much as 0.3 mgd, but those completed in sandstone underlying higher topographic areas produce lesser quantities. \r\n\r\nSurface-water resources were appraised by use of average flow and 7-day Q2 (median annual 7-day minimum flow).An average flow of about 640 mgd or about 1 mgd per square mile originates in the county. Streamflow during low flow conditions is small; only three streams have 7-day Q2's that exceed 2 mgd. Estimates of storage requirements are provided for sustained draft rates of 25 to 50 percent of the average flow.\r\n\r\nWater from aquifers and streams in Blount County is generally of suitable chemical quality for most uses. Water from the Pottsville Formation generally contains iron in excess of 0.3 mg/l (milligrams per liter) and water from limestone and dolomite aquifers and from some streams during low flows is moderately hard to hard and may need treatment for certain uses. \r\n\r\nWater use in the county was about 3.2 mgd in 1968 and 46 mgd was diverted for use outside the county.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75453","usgsCitation":"Faust, R.J., and Harkins, J.R., 1975, Water availability of Blount County, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-453, 23 leaves :ill., maps (some col.) ;31 cm.; (43 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75453.","productDescription":"23 leaves :ill., maps (some col.) ;31 cm.; (43 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":95145,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0453/plate-1.pdf","size":"11531","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":95146,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0453/plate-2.pdf","size":"6847","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147229,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0453/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42094,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0453/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4f18","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Faust, Robert J.","contributorId":21553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Faust","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168051,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harkins, Joe R.","contributorId":28982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harkins","given":"Joe","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168052,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
