Two well-field arrangements were used at each site. The initial well-field arrangement at each site consisted of three wells located in a line parallel to the Ohio River. The simulated wells were 350 feet (107m) apart and 500 feet (152m) from the river. Pumping was simulated at a rate of 1,500 gal min<sup>-1</sup> (5,678 1 min<sup>-1</sup>) for 256 days. The second well-field arrangement allowed comparison of drawdown between the initial well-field arrangement and (a) wells located 350 feet (107m) nearer the river, (b) additional wells, located between the initial well field and the bedrock valley wall and (c) wells located on a line perpendicular to the river rather than parallel to the river. A verification procedure for the digital model based on observed aquifer response to a flood on the Ohio River is included as an appendix.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The goal in operating these networks has been to obtain sufficient data for estimating flood frequency at ungaged sites with the equivalent accuracy expected from 10 years of observed flood records. In some areas the networks have accumulated sufficient data to satisfy these accuracy goals. A review of these networks, looking toward possible reduction of the number of gages, is now timely. Continued operation of a few selected gages may be desirable to provide a longer time-sample base for improving the flood-frequency estimating equation and(or) to expand the area over which the equations apply.</p><p>In 1974, Thomas Maddock III developed a rational method for selecting gages to be retained in a reduced hydrologic network. This method of network analysis seeks the optimum set of gages to be retained for a given level of annual operating costs with the information content of the reduced network being the factor optimized. Application of Maddock's method demonstrated that a considerable number of gages could be eliminated from a network without grossly decreasing its information content.</p><p>Maddock's method of analysis is described in detail for a hypothetical network of gages. The method also is applied to actual networks in Montana, Illinois, and Georgia.</p><p>The analysis of networks in Montana illustrates the basic approach to selecting an optimal subset from the existing set of gages. The Illinois analysis demonstrated that by retaining only 26 percent of the gages, nearly 63 percent of the original information is retained in the reduced network. Tritium now in the aquifer is partly natural cosmic ray produced tritium, but most is tritium produced by atmospheric thermonuclear tests in the 1950's and early 1960's. The tritium levels in atmospheric precipitation and streams recharging the Edwards are presented for comparison with the ground-water data.</p><p>In general, tritium distribution within the Edwards confirms the accepted pattern of water flow within the aquifer. This area could contain from 0.3 to 1.4 billion barrels of oil and from 0.6 to 2.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas depending upon the statistical confidence level indicated.</p><p>The known geology of this submerged area, is extrapolated to the offshore from onshore data. The sedimentary rocks are as old as Triassic and as young as Pleistocene. The Mesozoic strata include volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic and marine clastic sediments. Tertiary, rocks from which the oil and gas in Upper Cook Inlet are produced, consist of nonmarine conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and coal. The potential objective section for oil and gas in this OCS area ranges from Middle Jurassic through the Tertiary.</p><p>The present structural configuration of this area is a northeast trending trough filled with Tertiary sediments. The trough is flanked by two major faults, the Bruin Bay fault on the northwest and the Border Ranges fault on the southeast. Between these faults is the OCS area containing anticlinal structures and faults which may be traps for hydrocarbons.</p><p>Potential geologic hazards are present in this area. It is an area of intense tectonism expressed as seismic activity (earthquakes) and volcanic eruptions which produce many natural disturbances including tsunamis. Samples of oil shale from two drill cores and one composite sample from the Colony mine were split and studied by X-ray diffraction methods to determine their bulk mineralogy. Oil yield data were obtained for these samples by conventional Fischer assay analysis and samples of the spent oil shale were studied by X-ray diffraction to determine the changes which resulted from pyrolysis. The amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from 31 spent oil-shale samples were determined using hot distilled water, hot 0.1M KOH, and hot 0.5M KOH as solvents. Extractable Al<sub>2</sub>O and SiO<sub>2</sub> were also determined for the 31 spent oil-shale samples using hot 0.1M NaOH and hot 0.5M NaOH.</p><p>Correlation of the relative abundance of analcime--Na[Al, Si<sub>2</sub>O<sub>6</sub>]. H<sub>2</sub>0-- in raw oil-shale samples with the amounts of Na<sub>2</sub>O, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and SiO<sub>2</sub> extracted from pyrolyzed oil shale demonstrates that analcime contributes significantly to all of these elements after it has been subjected to pyrolysis. Because of the large contribution of SiO<sub>2</sub> extractable from pyrolyzed analcime-bearing oil shale using caustic solvents, there may be significant problems in obtaining leachates high in Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>content and low in SiO<sub>2</sub> content where analcime is present with dawsonite--NaAl(OH)<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub>. This consideration is important to assessment of potential aluminum resources in oil shale. The computed discharge of Santa Maria River at Guadalupe for the water years 1969-71 was 9,500,000 tons (8,600,000 tonnes) of suspended sediment and 6,000,000 tons (5,400,000 tonnes) of coarse sediment. Estimated mean annual coarse-sediment discharge for the 31 water years, 1941-71, is 230,000 tons (209,000 tonnes) in the Santa Ana River and 300,000 tons (272,000 tonnes) in the Santa Maria River. Streamflow in the Santa Maria River was adjusted to represent 1971 conditions. The 31-year mean annual volumes of coarse-sediment discharges are 190,000 cubic yards (140,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Ana River and 250,000 cubic yards (190,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Maria River.</p><p>Only during floodflow is any significant quantity of sediment transported. Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. Water for domestic and stock supplies generally can be obtained from wells in either of the above deposits. Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel and in adequate quantities from the consolidated rocks in the southeastern part of the area. </p><p>The unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 226,000 acre- feet of recharge annually, and about 775,000 acre-feet of water is in storage in the deposits. An additional 77 million acre-feet is in storage in the consolidated aquifers. In 1968 about 7,500 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for all purposes. About 6,300 acre-feet of surface water and 1,400 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation of 7,600 acres of cropland. This proposed operating plan could be followed successfully most of the time. Some periods of low flow, mainly in winter, would require drawdowns below the minimum stage to maintain minimum discharge. Occasional large floods occurring about once in 5 years would require surcharges over the maximum stage to limit the maximum discharge. In Part 1, records are included for 63 gaging stations, of which 62 are streamflow discharge stations, and 1 is a lake station; also are included records for 22 crest-stage partial-record stations, and 14 miscellaneous sites. In Part 2, water quality data on chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of surface and ground water were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 60minute intervals. Records are given for 38 sampling stations of which 11 are continuous record stations, and 27 are miscellaneous sites. Records of chemical analyses are also given for 21 ground-water sites. In Part 3, water level data are shown for 11 ground-water wells. Locations of surface-water stations, water-quality stations, and ground-water wells are shown in figure 2. A few pertinent stations in bordering States and Provinces are also included in this report. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of G. S. Hayes, District Chief, succeeded by C. R. Wagner. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in
