Separate tables are presented for unregulated and regulated periods of record. These summary tables include: (1) the number of days in each year that the daily discharge was between selected limits (duration tables), (2) the lowest mean daily discharge (frequency tables), (3) the highest mean daily discharge (frequency tables), (4) a monthly duration table for each station with 29 years or more of essentially unregulated record, and (5) statistics of annual discharge. These summaries provide useful information about the quantity, distribution, and variability of streamflow and provide basic data for developing relations for estimating streamflow at sites other than regular stream-gaging sites. This information is also useful in designing bridges, culverts, and other hydraulic structures as well as reservoirs for water supply, flood control, and low-flow Predominantly fine-grained alluvium mantles much of the limestone and marl area and fills overdeepened south-trending valleys to depths of as much as 100 feet. Rainfall follows an orographic pattern ranging from about 30 inches in eastern St. Croix to 55 inches in the northwestern mountains. \r\n\r\nFour streams, all heading in the Northside Range, have intermittent reaches. All other streams in St. Croix are ephemeral, flowing only for a few hours or days following major rainstorms. Flow in the intermittent streams ranges from about 1 to 9 percent of the total rainfall and usually half or more of the flow is storm runoff resulting from two or three major storms. Storm runoff from individual storms seldom exceeds 5 percent of the rainfall. Only from 2 storms, one of 5 inches and the other of 7 inches in less than 48 hours, did runoff reach 20 percent, both times on River Gut at Golden Grove. The lack of storm runoff is attributed to the capability of the soil zone to accept large volumes of water and deficient soil moisture most of the year. \r\n\r\nThe dissolved-solids content of the water of St. Croix. reflects the influence of the sea and land. Bulk precipitation is believed to be the source of the initial mineral content of the island water. Additional mineralization, particularly of ground water, results from the solution of soluble salts, mixing with residual sea water, and concentration by evapotranspiration. Water in the volcanic rocks is basically a calcium bicarbonate sodium chloride type with dissolved solids ranging from 500 to 1,000 mg/l (milligrams per liter), and chloride concentration of 100 to 300 mg/1. By contrast, water in the limestone is a sodium bicarbonate sodium chloride type with dissolved-solids content ranging from less than 1,000 to more than 20,000 mg/1 and chloride concentration from less than 100 to more than 10,000 mg/l. The mineral content of water in the limestone invariably increases with depth. Water in the alluvial deposits and in the streams usually reflects the characteristics of water from the adjacent bedrock. \r\n\r\nThe retention of large volumes of rainfall in the soil zone from which it is evaporated and transpired by plants greatly reduces the water available for recharge to the aquifers of the island. Estimates of effective recharge to the aquifers range from less than 0.5 inch in some volcanic and marl rocks to 5 inches annually in more porous limestone and alluvium. Long-term yield from the aquifers is also affected by their storage capacity which may range from less than 1 percent in volcanic rocks and marl to 10 to 15 percent in limestone and alluvium. The ground-water potential (equivalent to the quantity of recharge) of St. Croix is estimated at 3.9 mgd (million gallons per day)--0.9 mgd from the Northside Range (Area 1) ; 0.4 mgd from the East End Range (Area 2), and 2.6 mgd from the central lowlands (Area 3). Most areas where major ground-water supplies are .available, principally in Central St. Croix, have already been developed. The Castle Coakley area, with a potential yield of 400,000 gpd, is the only major ground-water area still undeveloped. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water potential could be increased by reducing the brush and forest cover thus reducing water losses from transpiration; artificial recharge of alluvial aquifer by water spreading; utilizing streamflow (including storm runoff) or treated sewage effluent; or by lowering the ground-water level adjacent to streams to induce infiltration. \r\n\r\nAdvancements in desalination have made the brackish ground water in the Kingshill Marl (estimated at 35 billion recoverable gallons by Robison, 1972) a potential source of water. Data are reported for 89 sites because 4 substitute sites were sampled in the second period. Drainage areas of the basins sampled ranged from 4.1 to 19,5000 square miles (10.6 to 50,500 square kilometres). The chemical analyses included constituents of three general classes: (1) nutrients, (2) activity indicators, and (3) dominant anions. Modification of the natural chemical and physical characteristics of the surface waters by man's activities is evident in some of the data. However, the activities are so diverse in type and in areal extent that their influence in terms of cause and effect is often obscure.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Nutrient concentrations were high enough to indicate potential problems at about a quarter of the sampling sites. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH values indicated a generally favorable capacity for regeneration or recovery from degradation, although a number a streams east of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers are marginal or lacking in the capacity. Regionally, sulfate is the dominant ion and was observed in concentrations of 40 milligrams per litre or more at 90 percent of the sites. Bicarbonate exceeded 100 milligrams per litre at 22 sites. The differences between the zones primarily reflect differences in </span><span>the variability of stream flow.</span></p><p><span>To assure the available draft will fall below 75 percent of the mean annual flow of a stream only once in 50 years on the average, a reservoir in the mountains would need a usable storage capacity of 45 percent of the mean annual runoff of the impounded stream. In comparison, reservoirs in parts of the Piedmont furnishing a draft of 75 percent of the mean annual flow must have usable storage equal to 60 percent of the mean annual runoff of the stream. In the inner Coastal Plain the storage required increases to 84 per-cent, and in the outer Coastal Plain to about 110 percent. These increases in storage necessary to furnish a certain draft are indicative of the general increase in streamflow variability, both seasonally and between years, that occurs from west to east in the State. </span></p><p><span>Net evaporative draft, the evaporative loss from reservoirs when annual evaporation exceeds annual precipitation, also varies from west to east. For instance, a reservoir impounding a Piedmont stream, and designed with a 5 percent chance of deficiency, will have a net evaporative draft about twice as large as a similar sized reservoir in the Coastal Plain. In the mountains, annual precipitation always exceeds evaporation because of the cooler temperatures and higher rates of precipitation. </span></p><p><span>Annual net evaporation is also proportionately smaller for large reser</span><span>voirs than for small ones. On a Coastal Plain reservoir, with storage equivalent to the mean annual runoff of the stream and being drafted at 90 percent of the mean annual flow, the net evaporation for a stream with a mean annual runoff of only 500 acre-feet (0.62 cubic hectometres) is three times as great as for a stream with mean annual runoff of 100,000 acre-feet (123 cubic hectometres). Thus, one large reservoir has less evaporation loss than several small ones capable of furnishing, collectively, the same reliable draft.</span></p><p><span>Under some circumstances, sedimentation can quickly reduce the available storage in a reservoir, thus decreasing the reliable draft. Estimated sedi-mentation rates in the Piedmont can range from 240 acre-feet per year (0.3 cubic hectometres per year) in a severely exposed drainage basin of 10 square miles (26 square kilometres) to 0.4 acre-feet per year (493 cubic metres per year) in a wooded basin of the same size. </span></p><p><span>Seepage beneath and around a reservoir dam is normally not significant in the State. The usual engineering practices should be followed, however, to avoid locating the dam on an open or active fault, cavernous limestone, or continuous beds of sand or gravel. The goal in operating these networks has been to obtain sufficient data for estimating flood frequency at ungaged sites with the equivalent accuracy expected from 10 years of observed flood records. In some areas the networks have accumulated sufficient data to satisfy these accuracy goals. A review of these networks, looking toward possible reduction of the number of gages, is now timely. Continued operation of a few selected gages may be desirable to provide a longer time-sample base for improving the flood-frequency estimating equation and(or) to expand the area over which the equations apply.</p><p>In 1974, Thomas Maddock III developed a rational method for selecting gages to be retained in a reduced hydrologic network. This method of network analysis seeks the optimum set of gages to be retained for a given level of annual operating costs with the information content of the reduced network being the factor optimized. Application of Maddock's method demonstrated that a considerable number of gages could be eliminated from a network without grossly decreasing its information content.</p><p>Maddock's method of analysis is described in detail for a hypothetical network of gages. The method also is applied to actual networks in Montana, Illinois, and Georgia.</p><p>The analysis of networks in Montana illustrates the basic approach to selecting an optimal subset from the existing set of gages. The Illinois analysis demonstrated that by retaining only 26 percent of the gages, nearly 63 percent of the original information is retained in the reduced network. Lakes are a valuable resource, and their multiple uses have made them susceptible to water-quality problems such as algal blooms, sediment deposition and fish kills. These problems are products of the eutrophication process (enrichment, aging and extinction of lakes), which is often accelerated by man. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the properties and processes of lakes which govern lake enrichment, and the measures available to control enrichment.</p>\n<p>Lakes are described in terms of their physical (light penetration, temperature, sediment, and morphology), chemical (chemical constituents, plant nutrients:, and dissolved gases) and biological (plankton, benthos, and nekton) properties. These properties are all interre]ated, and are important variables to measure to evaluate water quality. In addition, lake processes, such as photosynthesis, respiration, eutrophication, and biogeochemical cycling, are important factors in determining the sources and extent of enrichment, and managing a lake for maximum benefit. Meeting demands for water of high quality requires a general knowledge of lake properties and processes, coupled with lake-basin planning, watershed and lake management, and water-quality control. There are many lake-management and control practices, but the best tools for quality control are preventive measures. Once extensive enrichment has occurred, there are few management or control options available.</p>\n<p>As lake studies become more common, sampling techniques for data collection need increased accuracy and consistency, in order to make meaningful comparisons between different lakes. Therefore, the report discusses the main factors involved in conducting lake studies. These factors include the types and frequency of measurements useful in lake reconnaissance studies and a review of literature on sampling equipment and techniques. Using a release-flow model and an empirical equation, the suspended-sediment discharge at Kneeland was estimated to be about 60 percent of the suspended-sediment discharge at the Arcata station. The study of the proposed impoundment determined the effect of discharge on channel configuration and concluded: The reservoir would trap about 60 percent of the potential beach-forming sediments. Release flows could transport'the expected inflow of sediment particles less than 2 millimetres in diameter for the reach of the river downstream from the impoundment site and about 130,000 tons per year (120,000 tonnes per year) of bed material particles less than 3 inches (76 millimetres) in diameter. Release flows could be expected to degrade the channel for about 15.miIes (24 kilometres) downstream from the impoundment, and downstream from that reach artificial adjustments would override most release-flow effects on channel adjustments. Unit 1 is comprised mostly of sand and, in the western part of the National Lakeshore, is capable of yielding more than 500 gallons per minute (32 litres per second) to properly constructed wells. Unit 2, a silt till below unit 1, has little potential as a source of water for public supplies within the National Lakeshore area. Unit 4, a clay till under unit 2, is capable of yielding from 10 to 65 gallons per minute (0.6 to 4 litres per second) throughout the National Lakeshore.</p><p>Precipitation samples collected at the National Lakeshore had average inorganic ion concentrations ranging from 0 to 7.0 milligrams per litre. Streams in the National Lakeshore generally had a specific conductance ranging from 300 to 600 micromhos, a pH ranging from 6.5 to 8.1, and a dissolved oxygen concentration near saturation (7.7 to 12.9 milligrams per litre). The hogs and marshlands generally contained water with a specific conductance ranging from 40 to 150 micromhos, a pH ranging from 5.0 to 6.5, and dissolved oxygen ranging from 0.2 to 4.0 milligrams per litre. Most surface waters tended to have calcium and bicarbonate as the dominant ion pair. Exceptions include some inter-dunal ponds and certain watercourses and areas of Pinhook Bog. Ground-water chemical quality varied with depth and location but not with time during a 6-month interval. Ground water was usually a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type and moderately to very hard (71 to 390 milligrams per litre).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
