Wells for domestic and stock supply generally can be drilled successfully in consolidated rocks. Wells for large-scale municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally are successful in areas underlain by saturated unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel.

Unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 2 million acre-feet of recharge annually, and about 84 million acre-feet of water is in temporary storage in the deposits. In 1968 and 1969 about 270,000 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn annually for all purposes. Of the total withdrawn, about 167,000 acre-feet was applied for irrigation of about 122,000 acres of cropland. Ground-water yields are low and may be locally inadequate for single family requirements where wells produce from bedrock in the eastern Hillside region. At lower altitudes single family water requirements of 3 to 10 gallons per minute or 0.2 to 0.6 litre per second usually can be obtained, but aquifers capable of being pumped at larger yields for public supplies are uncommon. However, in a few localities, wells do produce 40 to 300 gallons per minute or 2.5 to 19 litres per second from sand and gravel aquifers lying within thick sequences of glacial till. Streamflow within the Hillside area is inadequate as a significant source of water for public supply. Springs, swamps, and water-logged surficial sediments in the Hillside area are mainly caused by hilly terrain and low permeability of surficial materials.

The relative vulnerability of streams, lakes, and ground water to pollution caused by the discharge of liquid waste, particularly from onsite sewage-disposal systems, is moderate to high in about half the study area. At higher altitudes contamination of bedrock aquifers may occur if discharge of liquid wastes is not regulated. The deep sedimentary aquifers at lower altitudes are less susceptible to contamination. However, shallow groundwater bodies may become polluted by discharge of sewage effluent and, consequently, some deep wells may be contaminated by seepage down the outside of casings or through leaky casing joints and underground seals.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75105","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Greater Anchorage Area Borough","usgsCitation":"Dearborn, L.L., and Barnwell, W.W., 1975, Hydrology for land-use planning: The Hillside area, Anchorage, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-105, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75105.","productDescription":"45 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146731,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0105/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":393069,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15092.htm"},{"id":423406,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0105/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","city":"Anchorage","otherGeospatial":"Hillside area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -149.803,\n              61.081\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.697,\n              61.081\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.697,\n              61.139\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.803,\n              61.139\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.803,\n              61.081\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db604bdd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dearborn, Larry L.","contributorId":66687,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dearborn","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167555,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barnwell, William W.","contributorId":73621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barnwell","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167556,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In general, the water in this area is higher in concentrations of most chemical constituents. Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation.

The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Dilution by rainfall and concentration by evapotranspiration are also important factors that influence the quality of surface water in the area of investigation.

The area of investigation in the Everglades is a sink for macronutrients, trace metals, and chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides. These constituents do not move through the system freely. They become tied up in various complexes and for that reason, the water being delivered to Everglades National Park is of better quality than the water entering the northern edge of the water conservation areas. The various physical and biological processes and chemical reactions combine to improve the water quality as the water flows southward.

The data presented in this report may be used as a baseline for determination of future changes in water quality at the several places in the Everglades where recurrent sampling of rainfall, surface water, and bottom sediments was undertaken during the course of the investigation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7556","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Waller, B.G., and Earle, J.E., 1975, Chemical and biological quality of water in part of the Everglades, southeastern Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-56, 157 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7556.","productDescription":"157 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":377417,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0056/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159297,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0056/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.727783203125,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.727783203125,\n              26.931865156388916\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              26.931865156388916\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e48ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waller, Bradley G.","contributorId":83492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Waller","given":"Bradley","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203083,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Earle, James E.","contributorId":88382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Earle","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203084,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The U.S. Naval Weapons Center at China Lake and nearby communities depend upon an adequate source of ground water for their existence. Much of the ground water is of poor quality. Most of the ground-water pumping occurs in the Inyokern, intermediate, and Ridgecrest areas. The quality of ground water in these well fields is considered excellent for public use. The increasingly larger pumping depressions in the well fields do not seem to have significantly changed the natural flow pattern of the poor-quality ground water in the shallow aquifer toward the China Lake playa. In 1972 the flow pattern of the poor quality ground water was not toward these pumping depressions. The recharge to the ground water of sewage effluent from the U.S. Navy sewage ponds and the Ridgecrest Sanitation District sewage ponds has not significantly affected ground-water quality in the valley. There is no indication that recharge of sewage effluent from these ponds is migrating toward the well fields. The dissolved-solids concentration in the ground water in some areas is increasing slightly, but where this has occurred, it is not yet serious.
","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. Subsidence of the land surface at Seabrook is due principally to the removal of water. Significnt subsidence of the land surface probably began after 1920, and a minimum of about 3.3 feet and a maximum of about 4.3 feet of subsidence had occurred at Seabrook by 1973.
\n
Probable future subsidence was calculated by two different methods for each of two different loading situations. In the first loading situation, the artesian heads in the Alta Loma Sand (Rose, 1943) and Evangeline aquifer would continue to decline at the respective rates of 8 feet per year and 7 feet per year until 1980 and then cease. In the second loading situation, the artesian heads in the Alta Loma Sand and Evangeline aquifer would continue to decline at rates of 8 and 7 feet per year ulntil 1990 and then cease.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri7631","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Gabrysch, R., and Bonnet, C., 1975, Land-surface subsidence at Seabrook, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-31, vi, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7631.","productDescription":"vi, 53 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258621,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0031/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":258620,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0031/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.40 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Seabrook","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.04444122314453,\n              29.53791790738083\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.04444122314453,\n              29.589132141849095\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.99465942382811,\n              29.589132141849095\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.99465942382811,\n              29.53791790738083\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.04444122314453,\n              29.53791790738083\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adf53","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gabrysch, R.K.","contributorId":105691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gabrysch","given":"R.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197755,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bonnet, C.W.","contributorId":44535,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bonnet","given":"C.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197754,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The individual pictures were selected to provide complete coverage of the planet at the smallest scales possible with a minimum of overlap. They thus provide the most compact data set attainable. Most of the pictures used were from sequences designed by the Mariner 9 imaging team for computing a planetwide control net. Because they did not provide complete coverage, they were supplemented with global-scale pictures taken late in the Mariner 9 mission, and, where the latter were not available, with pictures taken primarily for topographic and geologic mapping. For a listing of topographic and geologic mapping pictures, see \"Index of Mariner 9 Mapping Pictures of Mars\" (1975). The pictures on this plot have been specially processed in the computer to remove density variations across the frame caused by sun elevation.

The hatched area in the north polar region was covered with frost or snow when pictures, were taken. Using a release-flow model and an empirical equation, the suspended-sediment discharge at Kneeland was estimated to be about 60 percent of the suspended-sediment discharge at the Arcata station. The study of the proposed impoundment determined the effect of discharge on channel configuration and concluded: The reservoir would trap about 60 percent of the potential beach-forming sediments. Release flows could transport'the expected inflow of sediment particles less than 2 millimetres in diameter for the reach of the river downstream from the impoundment site and about 130,000 tons per year (120,000 tonnes per year) of bed material particles less than 3 inches (76 millimetres) in diameter. Release flows could be expected to degrade the channel for about 15.miIes (24 kilometres) downstream from the impoundment, and downstream from that reach artificial adjustments would override most release-flow effects on channel adjustments. Mex. was evaluated by reviewing the published literature, inspecting aerial and space photographs, and interviewing ranchers and personnel employed by well-drilling and mineral-exploration companies by telephone. \r\n\r\nThe San Andres Limestone and underlying Glorieta Sandstone of Permian age are the oldest aquifers capable of yielding water of a quality suitable for municipal use. Extreme local variations in hydraulic conductivity and water quality reflect a karstic topography developed on the San Andres Limestone prior to burial by Upper Triassic sediments. The San Andres Limestone and Glorieta Sandstone form an important aquifer in the Grants-Bluewater area where yields of as much as 2,200 gallons per minute (140 l/s) have been obtained. Yields from wells completed in the San Andres-Glorieta aquifer on the Chaco slope and in the Gallup sag-Mogollon slope on the northeast and southeast flanks, respectively, of the Zuni uplift will be much less than those prevailing in the Grants-Bluewater area. Water quality in the San Andres Limestone and Glorieta Sandstone deteriorates with distance away from the axis of the Zuni uplift.\r\n\r\nSandstones of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous age are potential aquifers wherever they are present. Yields to wells tapping these aquifers are generally less than 200 gallons per minute (13 l/s) due to the relatively low hydraulic conductivity. \r\n\r\nWells tapping alluvium of Late Cenozoic age along the Rio San Jose and Puerco River and interbedded volcanics and alluvium elsewhere in the area generally yield less than 100 gallons per minute (6 l/s) of water. Tributaries ,of the Rio San Jose that have eroded canyons into Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks east of the Continental Divide and south of the eastern part of the Zuni uplift have been repeatedly displaced and (or) covered by Quaternary volcanic rocks. The exact location, extent, and depth of buried alluvium in the Late Tertiary valleys is unknown. Water enters the volcanic rocks as rainfall and snowmelt and probably passes quickly into and through, the underlying alluvium into Jurassic and Cretaceous strata. \r\n\r\nThe Gallup Sandstone in the lower part of the Mesaverde Group and the San Andres Limestone and Glorieta Sandstone (combined) are potential sources of water in the North Plains-Malpais area.\r\n\r\nSustained yields of 500 to 800 gallons per minute (30 to 50 l/s) can be expected from wells completed in the Gallup Sandstone of Cretaceous age in areas west and north of the Zuni uplift. Properly completed wells tapping the Dakota Sandstone of Cretaceous age and the Westwater Canyon Sandstone Member of the Morrison Formation of Jurassic age locally yield 100 to 250 gallons per minute (6 to 15 l/s) north and east of Gallup. Additional supplies of ground water could be developed from these aquifers. However, arrangements to purchase or lease the water would probably need to be made before these resources could be exploited. \r\n\r\nApproximately 3,000 gallons per minute (190 l/s) of ground water is being pumped from the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation at two uranium mines located about 12 miles (20 km) northeast of Gallup in the Church Rock mining district. The water is pumped into settling ponds at the surface. Effluent from the ponds is allowed to flow into arroyos draining into the Puerco River. Some of the waste water will be used in an ore-processing mill that is expected to be constructed near the mines. However, additional waste water will probably be available from other mines that reportedly will be located in the same mining district. Water salvaged from the current mining operations and (or) pumped from abandoned uranium mines constitutes the most readily available and dependable source of new ground-water supplies for the city of Gallup. The water contains dissolved uranium but is otherwise of better quality than that now avai","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75522","usgsCitation":"Hiss, W.L., 1975, Evaluation and proposed study of potential ground-water supplies, Gallup area, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-522, 153 leaves :maps (some folded) ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75522.","productDescription":"153 leaves :maps (some folded) ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":108634,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15197.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"15197"},{"id":146760,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42766,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42767,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42762,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42763,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42764,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42765,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0522/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fb031","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hiss, William L.","contributorId":8064,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hiss","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168968,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sipsey Fork and Mulberry Fork are the only streams in and adjoining Cullman County that have median annual 7-day low flows that exceed 2 mgd.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75451","usgsCitation":"Faust, R.J., and Jefferson, P.O., 1975, Geology and water availability of Cullman County, Alabama: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-451, Report: 29 p.; 3 Tables; 7 Figures, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75451.","productDescription":"Report: 29 p.; 3 Tables; 7 Figures","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":373065,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-3.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373070,"rank":10,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/table-1.pdf","text":"Table 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373066,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-4.pdf","text":"Figure 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373067,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-5.pdf","text":"Figure 5","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373071,"rank":11,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/table-2.pdf","text":"Table 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373069,"rank":9,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-7.pdf","text":"Figure 7","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373072,"rank":12,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/table-3.pdf","text":"Table 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143440,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":373062,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373068,"rank":8,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-6.pdf","text":"Figure 6","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373064,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-2.pdf","text":"Figure 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":373063,"rank":3,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0451/figure-1.pdf","text":"Figure 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","county":"Cullman County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.10922241210938,\n              33.86015274030232\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.47064208984375,\n              33.86015274030232\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.47064208984375,\n              34.30374065672995\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.10922241210938,\n              34.30374065672995\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.10922241210938,\n              33.86015274030232\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db684164","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Faust, Robert J.","contributorId":21553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Faust","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jefferson, Patrick O.","contributorId":27455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jefferson","given":"Patrick","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158327,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
