Sinkholes have formed in the near surface carbonate bedrock, and a karst topography is developing. Farther north, along the east boundary, the drift is more than 200 feet (61 m) thick, and the land surface reaches altitudes of more than 1,450 feet (442 m) &ndash; the highest area in southeastern Minnesota. In the central part of the watershed in the southern flood plain of the Cedar River, the drift is less than 100 feet (30 m) thick, and the land surface altitude is less than 1,140 feet (347 m). The western part is dominated by a terminal moraine of the last Wisconsin glacier. Here the drift is more than 300 feet (91 m) thick, is poorly drained, and has numerous lakes.</p>\n<p>The watershed is mostly prairie and is well suited for farming, which is the dominant economic activity.</p>\n<p>Topographic quadrangle maps published by the U.S. Geological Survey are available for the entire watershed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The area is essentially urban, although the towns in the upper basin still retain some rural character. The population of the middle and upper parts increased 80 percent between 1950 and 1970, while the population in the lower part declined 4 percent. This atlas summarizes the water resources and associated water problems of the area. The investigation upon which the atlas is based was made from 1968 to 1971 and is part of a series covering the major river basins in Massachusetts. The study area includes 251 sq mi of drainage area above the gaging station at Waltham. One form of competition posing serious problems in indiscriminate development on flood plains along creeks and rivers. Flood plains are natural features of the landscape developed by streams in carry water in excess of channel capacity. Although not used as often by the stream, flood plains are as much a part of the stream system as is the channel. Whenever man competes with this natural function of the flood plain he must inevitably pay the price through property damage and varying degrees of human suffering Flood damages in the United States have been estimated to average about \\$1 billion annually (American Public Works Association, 1966.) This tremendous waste of national resources is borne not only by those citizens in direct contact with floods but also to a lesser degree by all citizens through increased cost of public services. These pictures were selected because they have the highest resolution of any set with contiguous coverage of the planet. Most or the pictures were token according to sequences designed for mapping by the Mariner 9 imaging team.</p><p>The frame outlines were drawn according to spacecraft tracking information. Their locations have been verified generally, but not precisely, by matching picture images with known locations of surface features. Errors as large as 100km may exist in the placement of the frame outlines.</p><p>Each frame js identified by a number assigned by a clock on the Mariner 9 spacecraft. This number, or \"DAS\" time (for Data Automation Subsystem), indicates the number of 1.2 second intervals between the time the spacecraft was launched and the time the picture was taken. In the past they were used primarily to store water for irrigation and domestic uses. Some were used for recreation. Today, rapid suburban development in the&nbsp;Front Range Urban Corridor is accompanied by a shift of the principal use of many lakes to recreation and to centers of real estate developments. These same lakes are threatened with a general deterioration of chemical and biological quality caused by heavy use and development of the surrounding area.&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to present the results of an inventory of the lakes in the central one-third of the Colorado&nbsp;Front Range Urban Corridor. This inventory provides information that might be helpful in planning the best and most beneficial use of lakes in an area of rapid population growth. The report includes data on lake size and water quality. Size data are included on most of the lakes of 2 hectares (20,000 m<sup>2</sup><span>,&nbsp;</span>or about 5 acres) or greater, and water-quality data are provided on most lakes larger than 10 hectares (about 25 acres). The individual pictures were selected to provide complete coverage of the planet at the smallest scales possible with a minimum of overlap. They thus provide the most compact data set attainable. Most of the pictures used were from sequences designed by the Mariner 9 imaging team for computing a planetwide control net. Because they did not provide complete coverage, they were supplemented with global-scale pictures taken late in the Mariner 9 mission, and, where the latter were not available, with pictures taken primarily for topographic and geologic mapping. For a listing of topographic and geologic mapping pictures, see \"Index of Mariner 9 Mapping Pictures of Mars\" (1975). The pictures on this plot have been specially processed in the computer to remove density variations across the frame caused by sun elevation.</p><p>The hatched area in the north polar region was covered with frost or snow when pictures, were taken. Albedo information is therefore not available from Mariner 9 in that area.</p><p> The frame outlines were drawn according to spacecraft tracking information and have been verified by matching picture images with known locations of surface features. Parts of some pictures are degraded by foreshortening and poor illumination, so outlines show useful image area only, not necessarily frame edges. </p><p>Each frame is identified by a number assigned by a clock on the Mariner 9 spacecraft. It is the net discharge into the stream from surface-water and ground-water sources with losses occurring from evapotranspiration and other consumptive uses. Runoff can be expressed by a variety of numerical values, but average depth of water over the drainage basin, in inches per year, probably is the most widely used unit of measurement.</span></p>\n<p><span>The map of average annual runoff (fig. 1), in inches per year, shows the geographical distribution of runoff in tributary streams for the years 1951&mdash;80; it describes the magnitudes and variations of runoff nationwide. The map was prepared to reflect the runoff of tributary streams rather than in major rivers in order to represent more accurately the local or small scale variation in runoff with precipitation and other geographical characteristics. The 1951&ndash;80 period was selected to conform to the period chosen by the World Meteorological Organization for study of climatic variations. The map should not be used to estimate the streamflow for any specific site.
