Adjustments were made to the precipitation parameter to account for the effects of year-end storms. Combined municipal and industrial use of ground water in the 90-square-mile area has increased from about 180 cubic feet per second in 1960 to nearly 250 cubic feet per second in 1972. The increased pumpage has resulted in continuing water-level declines in some parts of the area. </p><p>A digital model which uses a finite-difference approximation technique to solve partial differential equations of flow through a porous medium was used to evaluate the effects of pumping stresses on water levels. The simulated head values presented in map form generally are in good agreement with potentiometric-surface maps prepared from field measurements.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. A series of \"aquifer atlases\" was deemed the most effective way to point out the character, the potential, and the extent of development of the aquifers and thereby provide water managers with data needed for efficient utilization of available resources. This report on the Miocene aquifer system is the first in the series. Uranium may be enriched to as much as 0.05 percent in phosphorites reworked in a marine environment, and isolated bones and concretions may contain as much as 0.8 percent uranium as a result of enrichment by ground water.</p><p>Uranium as U(IV) replaces calcium in the apatite structure. Possibly some U(VI) occurs as U0<sub>4</sub><sup>-2</sup> groups. Uranium is readily removed from apatite by weathering, and enrichment of phosphate after deposition may be entirely residual, as in the case of the brown rock deposits of Tennessee, or uranium may be added as in the case of the lateritic weathering of the deposits in Florida.</p><p>Uranium has been recovered as a byproduct of the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the wet process. In 1972, about 15 million tons of phosphate rock was used to make phosphoric acid in the United States. This phosphoric acid probably contained about 1500 tons of uranium. An additional 10 million tons, worldwide, was made into phosphoric acid, and thus, 1000 tons of uranium was in solution. Increased demand for phosphatic fertilizers and increases in the amount of phosphate rock used to make phosphoric acid makes it likely that tonnages of uranium in phosphoric acid will reach 5000 tons per year within the next 25 years. Surface waters were calcium magnesium bicarbonate types with 0.11 mg/liter or less of nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen and 0.10 mg/liter or less of total phosphorous. Fecal coliform bacteria concentrations were between 3 and 720 colonies per 100 milliliters and fecal Streptococci concentrations ranged between 19 and 1600 colonies per 100 milliliters. Pesticide concentrations were low in the stream bottom materials, but an increasing trend was apparent in the downstream direction. Four physiographic units occur in the area, the largest of which is the compound alluvial fan of the intermittent streams north of the Kings River.</p><p>Geologic units consist of consolidated rocks and unconsolidated deposits. The consolidated rocks yield only small quantities of fresh water to wells. The unconsolidated deposits immediately overlie the consolidated rocks and, within their upper part, yield large quantities of water to wells.</p><p>The dominant structure of the unconsolidated deposits is that of a homocline. Although the deposits are inferred to be faulted, the fault does not have any demonstrated effect on the movement of ground water.</p><p>Total storage capacity in the area in the upper 200 feet (61metres) is about 1,100,000 acre-feet (1,360 cubic hectometres).</p><p>The total volume of ground-water underflow moving out of the area was estimated to be about 60,000 to 70,000 acre-feet per year (74 to 86 cubic hectometres per year).</p><p>Two water-level contour maps indicate that changes in water use over a 12-year period have not greatly affected the direction of ground-water movement.</p><p>Long-term records show that rises and declines in water level, indifferent parts of the area, often occur during the same period of time. The records also show that most of the storage changes in the reservoir have occurred in the upper 100 feet (30 metres) through a long-term water-level fluctuation of less than 40 feet (12 metres). Short-term trends show that, in general, water levels rise during winter, level off during spring, and decline from summer through autumn.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Nearly 15 inches of rain fell in about 6 hours near Nemo, S. Dak., and more than 10 inches of rain fell over a 60-square-mile area. The resulting floods were the highest ever recorded in South Dakota. At least 18 of the 27 streams where peak flows were computed experienced flows that exceeded the 50-year flood.</p>\n<p>At least 237 people died in the Black Hills flood and 8 people were still listed as missing 6 months after the flood. Another 3,057 people were injured, and total damage is estimated to have exceeded $160 million.</p>\n<p>As documented by radar and' satellite images and by radiosonde observations, as well as by much other weather data, the unusual and excessive rainfall was partly the result of a strong, low-level, easterly airflow that forced moist air upslope over the Black Hills. This sustained orographic effect helped the air to rise, cool, become very unstable, and release its moisture in repeating -thunderstorms. Another important contributing factor was the unusually light winds at higher levels. Those light winds did not disperse the moist air or move the thunderstorms along to prevent the extreme concentration of rainfall. Instead, these conditions allowed heavy rainfall to remain almost stationary along the eastern slopes of the Black Hills.</p>\n<p>Rainfall data from 24 observing stations and from over 200 miscellaneous sites show that all reported rains greater than 4 inches fell on the eastern slopes of the Black Hills. At least 6 inches of rain fell over a 300-square-mile area that lies primarily between 4,000 and 5,000 feet elevation.</p>\n<p>Almost all the flood peaks occurred between 2230 MDT on June 9 and 0100 MDT on June 10, 1972, in a flood belt about 40 miles long and 20 miles wide along the eastern slopes of the Black Hills. This belt extended from Sturgis, S. Dak., on the north to Hermosa, S. Dak., on the south, with Rapid City near the center. To document the flood, peak discharge determinations were made at 49 sites. Records show that about 13,000 acre-feet of water flowed through Rapid City during the 2 days of flooding. At one point during the night of June 9, the floodwaters rose about 3.5 feet in 15 minutes.
