A detailed description of Geological Survey classifications is given on pages 40 and 41. In a following section each classification is identified, subsequent actions are summarized, and conclusions are given pertaining to the disposition of the lands involved.</p><p>The report advocates the revocation of Geological Survey classifications affecting 13,985 acres and the retention of 1,883 acres in existing classifications. No new classifications are recommended at this time. The proposed revocations will in no way affect the withdrawals resulting from filings for preliminary permits or licenses under the Federal Power Act.</p><p>The review of Geological Survey classifications necessarily involves a companion study of waterpower withdrawals in connection with Federal Power Commission projects which are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Power Commission. A detailed description of these actions is given on pages 75 and 76 followed by a general description of all Federal Power Commission projects in the study area. The affected lands are identified and recommendations are made pertaining to the disposition of the lands. In the Pit River basin there are about 8,553 acres in Federal Power Commission project withdrawal of which 1,963 acres have negligible power value.</p><p>The appraisal of land classifications and withdrawals is based upon the current status of planning for future water resources development and an investigation of existing constructed projects, water supply, water rights, land topography, and other land uses. Conclusions concerning Geological Survey classifications are based on a tract-by-tract evaluation as some actions cover widely scattered potentialities; however, recommendations relating to Federal Power Commission project withdrawals are based on an evaluation of the purpose of each filing.</p><p>This report has been reviewed by the following agencies: The Resources Agency of California; Sacramento, CA., Soil Conservation Service, North Cal-Neva RC&amp;D Project; Cedarville, CA., Soil Conservation Service, Red Bluff, CA., Bureau of Reclamation, Sacramento, CA., and U.S. Forest Service, San Francisco, CA. It borders the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Santa Cruz Mountains on the east. The city of Watsonville is the largest center of population.</p><p>Seawater intrusion is occurring in the Pajaro Valley area from several miles north to several miles south of the mouth of the Pajaro River and in a small area about 4 miles (6.5 km) north of the river. The intrusion extends inland about 1 mile (1.6 km). Two water-bearing zones are being intruded--the depth intervals 100-200 feet (30-60 m) and 300-600 feet (90-180 m).</p><p>Ground-water pumpage averaged 49,100 acre-feet per year (60.6 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr) for the 9-year period 1963-71. The long-term ground-water yield of the Pajaro Valley is about 44,000 acre-feet per year (54.3 hm<sup>3</sup>/yr). Artificial recharge can be effected through modified streambeds at infiltration rates as high as 3 feet per day (0.9 m/d). Most of the area is covered by ground moraine cut deeply by the Minnesota River and less deeply by its tributaries. Surface drainage is toward the Minnesota River at the northeast corner of the watershed. The configuration of the water table, generally between 10 and 50 feet below land surface, is a subdued replica of the land surface. At 65 of 131 sites on streams that were sampled at least 10 times, the biochemical oxygen demand of at least half the samples exceeded 3.0 mg/l. At 20 of the sites, the dissolved-oxygen content of at least half the samples was less than 5.0 mg/l. The higher concentrations of minor elements usually were detected in waters from urban areas, indicating a relation to man's activities. Small amounts of some pesticides are widely distributed in low concentrations. The main channel of the reach will convey without overflow discharges as large as about 21,000 cubic feet per second, which have a 6-year recurrence interval. The banks in some areas will be overtopped at 25,500 cubic feet per second, which has a 13-year recurrence interval. The areas where overbank flooding will first occur, and water-surface profiles of a 3.4-year and 100-year flood were determined for six flood-profile stations. The largest flood for which data are available was that of December 1933; the approximate area that would be presently inundated by such a flood is shown. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of T.R. Cummings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan. </p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series. </p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. The Chicot aquifer overlies the Evangeline aquifer, which is underlain by the Burkeville confining layer. Both aquifers consist of unconsolidated and discontinuous layers of sand and clay that dip toward the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy pumping of fresh water has caused large declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces in both aquifers and has created large cones of depression around Houston. The declines have caused compaction of clay layers, which has resulted in land surface subsidence and the movement of saline ground water toward the centers of the cones of depression. An electric analog model was used to study the hydrologic system and to simulate the declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces for several alternative plans of ground-water development. The results indicate that the largest part. of the pumped water comes from storage in the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer. Vertical leakage from the aquifers and water derived from the compaction of clay layers in the aquifers are also large sources of the water being pumped. The response of the system, as observed on the model, indicates that development of additional ground-water supplies from the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer north of Houston would result in a minimum decline of the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces. Total withdrawals of about 1,000 million gallons (5.8 million cubic meters) per day may be possible without seriously, increasing subsidence or salt-water encroachment. Analyses of the recovery of water levels indicate that both land-surface subsidence and salt-water encroachment could be reduced by artificially recharging the artesian part of the
