The investigation covers mainly the period 1955-72.\r\n
Precipitation in the basin is classified as ample and averages 47 inches or 120 centimeters per year (3-5 inches or 8-12 centimeters per month). During the study period four general precipitation trends were noted: less than normalin 1955-61 and 1966-70; extreme drought in 1962-66; and above normal in 1971-72.
\r\n
Analyses of streamflow measurements at eight gaging stations indicate a general trend toward lower flows during the study period, which is attributed to generally lower than normal precipitation. Highest flows were observed in 1958, concurrent with maximum annual precipitation; whereas lowest flows were observed in 1965 during extreme drought conditions.
\r\n
Non-tidal streams in the basin are grouped into three general regions of similar chemical quality based upon predominant constituents and dissolved-solids concentration during low-flow conditions. The predominant cations in solution in all regions are calcium and magnesium (usually exceeding 60 percent of total cation content). In headwater streams of the North and South Branch Raritan Rivers, bicarbonate is the predominant anion; a combination of sulfate, chloride, and nitrate are the predominant anions in the other two regions. The dissolved-solids concentration of streams in areas little influenced by man's activities generally range from 40 to 200 mg/L. Those in areas influenced by man often range much higher sometimes exceeding 800 mg/L. Suspended-sediment yields in the basin range from 25 to 500 tons per square mile annually.
\r\n
The water quality of the Raritan River and most tributaries above Manville (784 square miles of 2,030 square kilometers drainage area) generally is good for most industrial, domestic, and recreational uses, although pollution has been reported locally in some areas. A comparison of chemical analyses of water collected at several sampling sites in the 1920's with more recent data, however, indicate that there has been a significant increase in sulfate, chloride, and nitrate ions transported per unit of streamflow. These increases reflect increased waste-water discharges and nutrients in agricultural runoff in the upper basin.
\r\n
Trends in the dissolved-solids and dissolved-oxygen concentation of water in the Raritan and MIllstone Rivers above their confluence at Manville are described. The dissolved solids of the Millstone River are shown to increase, particularly at low streamflows. For example, at a flow of 100 cubic feet per second (2.83 cubic meters per second) this river tansported 13 percent more dissolved solids in 1969-70 than it did in 1957-58. A similar trend, however, was not apparent on the Raritan River. This phenomenon is attributed to dilution provided since 1964 by upstream reservoir releases during low flows.
\r\n
With the exception of low-flow periods on the Raritan River, dissolved-oxygen concentrations showed little or no significant time trends at Manville on either the Raritan or Millstone River. An improvement in dissolved-oxygen content at flows lower than 100 cubic feet per second (2.83 cubic meters per second) is observed with time on the Raritan River. This improvement is attributed to generally better quality water and dilution of nonconservative pollutants by upstream reservoir releases during low flows.
\r\n
The Raritan River between Manville and Perth Amboy flows through a large urban and industrial complex. Much of this reach is tidal. Detrimental activities of man are reflected in higher concentrations of most constituents below Manville than those observed upstream. For example, between Manville and the head of tide near South Bound Brook, the maximum concentration of dissolved solids observed during the study period increased from 464 to 1,520 mg/L; orthophosphates from 0.93 to 2.3 mg/L; phenolic materials from 22 to 312 μg/L; and coliform bacteria from 13,300 to 100,000 colonies per 100 milliliters. A general deterioration in water quality with time in the river below Manville is demonstrated through comparisons of dissolved-oxygen and biochemical-oxygen demand data collected between the late 1920's and early 1970's.
\r\n
Several time-of-travel measurements within the basin are reported. These data provide reasonable estimates of the time required for soluble contaminants to pass through particular parts of the river system. For example, the peak concentration of a contaminant injected into the river system at Clinton at a flow of 100 cubic feet per second (2.83 cubic meters per second) would be expected to travel to the head of tide near South Bound Brook, about 34 miles (55 kilometers), in about 70 hours; but at a flow of 50 cubic feet per second (1.42 cubic meters per second) the traveltime would increase to about 125 hours.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Trenton, NJ","doi":"10.3133/wri7414","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection. Results indicate that water quality in the 'natural' environment is generally very good. Streams draining hydrologic bench-mark basins generally contain low concentrations of dissolved constituents. Water collected at the hydrologic bench-mark stations was analyzed for the following minor metals: arsenic, barium, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, selenium, silver, and zinc. Of 642 analyses, about 65 percent of the observed concentrations were zero. Only three samples contained metals in excess of U.S. Public Health Service recommended drinking-water standards--two selenium concentrations and one cadmium concentration. A total of 213 samples were analyzed for 11 pesticidal compounds. Widespread but very low-level occurrence of pesticide residues in the 'natural' environment was found--about 30 percent of all samples contained low-level concentrations of pesticidal compounds. The DDT family of pesticides occurred most commonly, accounting for 75 percent of the detected occurrences. The highest observed concentration of DDT was 0.06 microgram per litre, well below the recommended maximum permissible in drinking water. Nitrate concentrations in the 'natural' environment generally varied from 0.2 to 0.5 milligram per litre. The average concentration of nitrate in many major streams is as much as 10 times greater. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area in the 'natural' environment for the various physical divisions in the United States has been shown to be an applicable tool for approximating 'natural' water quality. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area is applicable in all the physical divisions of the United States, except the Central Lowland province of the Interior Plains, the Great Plains province of the Interior Plains, and the Basin and Ridge province of the Intermontane Plateaus. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area is least variable in the New England province and Blue Ridge province of the Appalachian Highlands. The dissolved-solids concentration versus discharge per unit area in the Central Lowland province of the Interior Plains is highly variable. A sample collected from the hydrologic bench-mark station at Bear Den Creek near Mandaree, N. Dak., contained 3,420 milligrams per litre dissolved solids. This high concentration in the 'natural' environment indicates that natural processes can be principal agents in modifying the environment and can cause degradation. Average annual runoff and rock type can be used as predictive tools to determine the maximum dissolved-solids concentration expected in the 'natural' environment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir460E","usgsCitation":"Biesecker, J.E., and Leifeste, D.K., 1974, Water quality of hydrologic bench marks; Reservoirs usually fill during the nonirrigation season, and streamflow for several miles below Lucky Peak Lake is very low, sometimes less than 10 cubic feet per second (0.28 cubic meters per second). On November 18-19, 1971, when the gates at Lucky Peak Dam were closed, inflow to the Boise River in the study reach totaled 1010 ft3 /s. Practically all inflow was discharged ground water. During the growing season, several thousands of ft3 /s are released from Lucky Peak Lake, but diversions reduce the flows to near zero below some large diversion points in the study reach. Characteristics of streamflow are described by duration curves, duration hydrographs, and low-flow and high-flow frequency curves.

Water released from Lucky Peak Lake is of excellent quality. Dissolved solids are usually less than 80 milligrams per liter. Discharged ground water increases the dissolved solids in the river downstream to 400 milligrams per liter or more when dilution from Lucky Peak Lake is slight. Other measures of water quality likewise show the deterioration in a downstream direction in the study reach.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7438","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources and the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, Walla Walla District","usgsCitation":"Thomas, C., and Dion, N.P., 1974, Characteristics of streamflow and ground-water conditions in the Boise River Valley, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 74-38, Report: v, 56 p.; 3 Plates: 28.18 x 17.41 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7438.","productDescription":"Report: v, 56 p.; 3 Plates: 28.18 x 17.41 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159474,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0038/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":352311,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0038/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":352312,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0038/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":352313,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0038/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":352310,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0038/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Boise River Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -116.75,43.5 ], [ -116.75,43.75 ], [ -116.0,43.75 ], [ -116.0,43.5 ], [ -116.75,43.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4f64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thomas, C.A.","contributorId":14385,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"C.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202710,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Dion, N. Fresh water, which is defined as containing 250 milligrams per liter chloride or less, in the Chicot aquifer is characteristically hard and high in iron concentration; in this area the hardness is generally 200-300 milligrams per liter. The soft-water zone, containing water with a hardness of less than 60 milligrams per liter, is anomalous and occurs in an area where the basal part of the aquifer is separated from the main body of the aquifer by a thick clay layer. The zone has been mapped in parts of St. Martin and adjoining Lafayette Parishes.\r\n\r\nAlthough the exact areal extent of the zone cannot be determined with available data, it appears to be sufficiently large that the soft water should prove to be an important asset to the area. The water could be used by itself or mixed with either hard or slightly salty water (more than 250 milligrams per liter chloride) to provide a blend that would require little or no treatment for most purposes. Because of the proximity of salty water in much of the area, careful planning and monitoring will be necessary to maintain the soft-water zone as a dependable supply of usable water. The soft water appears to be an exhaustible supply; however, its useful life as a resource can be maximized by proper management.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"[s.n.],","doi":"10.3133/ofr7465","usgsCitation":"Hosman, R., 1974, Soft-water zone in the Chicot Aquifer, Bayou Teche area, Louisiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-65, iii, 20 leaves :ill ;29 cm.; (31 p., 5 sheets - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7465.","productDescription":"iii, 20 leaves :ill ;29 cm.; (31 p., 5 sheets - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147341,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42888,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42889,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42890,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42891,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42892,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42893,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42894,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42895,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42896,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42897,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42898,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0065/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49efe4b07f02db5edce0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hosman, R. The Chicot aquifer overlies the Evangeline aquifer, which is underlain by the Burkeville confining layer. Both aquifers consist of unconsolidated and discontinuous layers of sand and clay that dip toward the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy pumping of fresh water has caused large declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces in both aquifers and has created large cones of depression around Houston. The declines have caused compaction of clay layers, which has resulted in land surface subsidence and the movement of saline ground water toward the centers of the cones of depression. An electric analog model was used to study the hydrologic system and to simulate the declines in the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces for several alternative plans of ground-water development. The results indicate that the largest part. of the pumped water comes from storage in the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer. Vertical leakage from the aquifers and water derived from the compaction of clay layers in the aquifers are also large sources of the water being pumped. The response of the system, as observed on the model, indicates that development of additional ground-water supplies from the water-table part of the Chicot aquifer north of Houston would result in a minimum decline of the altitudes of the potentiometric surfaces. Total withdrawals of about 1,000 million gallons (5.8 million cubic meters) per day may be possible without seriously, increasing subsidence or salt-water encroachment. Analyses of the recovery of water levels indicate that both land-surface subsidence and salt-water encroachment could be reduced by artificially recharging the artesian part of the aquifer.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74113","usgsCitation":"Jorgensen, D.G., 1974, Analog-model studies of ground-water hydrology in the Houston Most occur on the flanks of basins, along Basin and Range (late Miocene to Holocene) faults, while some occur in the inner parts of the basins. Surface temperatures of the springs range from slightly above ambient to, boiling; some springs are superheated. Maximum subsurface water temperatures calculated on the basis of quartz solubility range as high as 252?C, although most are below 190?C. Flows range from a trickle to several hundred liters per minute. \r\n\r\nThe Nevada geothermal systems differ markedly from the power-producing system at The Geysers, Calif., and from those areas with a high potential, for power production (e.g., Yellowstone Park, Wyo.; Jemez Mountains, N. Mex.). These other systems are associated with Quaternary felsic volcanic rocks and probably derive their heat from cooling magma rather high in the crust. In northern Nevada, however, felsic volcanic rocks are virtually all older than 10 million years, and. analogous magmatic heat sources are, therefore, probably lacking. \r\n\r\nNevada is part of an area of much higher average heat flow than the rest of the United States. In north-central Nevada, geothermal gradients are as great as 64?C per kilometer in bedrock and even higher in basin fill. The high gradients probably result from a combination of thin crust and high temperature upper mantle. \r\n\r\nWe suggest that the geothermal systems of northern Nevada result from circulation of meteoric waters along Basin and Range faults and that their temperature chiefly depends upon (1) depth of circulation and (2) the geothermal gradient near the faults.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey?,","doi":"10.3133/ofr74271","usgsCitation":"Hose, R.K., and Taylor, B.E., 1974, Geothermal systems of northern Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-271, 27 leaves :maps ;28 cm.; (31 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74271.","productDescription":"27 leaves :maps ;28 cm.; (31 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147320,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0271/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42887,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0271/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac5e4b07f02db67a118","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hose, Richard Kenneth","contributorId":23915,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hose","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"Kenneth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169085,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Taylor, Bruce Edward","contributorId":88748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169086,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The data used in the investigation were from a sample of wells chosen from the total inventoried irrigation wells in nine counties in northwestern Kansas; they can be considered as being typical of the data generally available in western Kansas.

The hypothesis that each of three physical characteristics of the wells had the same distribution in the sample as in the total population was accepted at the 95 percent significance level. These characteristics (saturated thickness of the aquifer, depth to water below land surface, and reported well yield) were assumed to be related to the withdrawal of the wells, and the sample was considered to be representative of the total population in regard to ground-water withdrawals.

Metered withdrawal values for the wells in the test area were not available, so derived withdrawals were obtained by using power-conversion coefficients to convert power records to pumpage. The power-conversion coefficient is the ratio of values obtained in short simultaneous measurements of power use and discharge for a well.

Trend-surface and multiple-regression analyses were performed on the power-conversion coefficients themselves and on the pumpage per irrigated acre derived from the coefficients. The equations developed using the available data proved to be poor tools for estimating withdrawals.

In the analyses, all the expected relationships appeared to be either very weak or non-existent. The expected relations may actually be weak; however, a more likely conclusion is drawn that the withdawal values, which have been derived using the power-conversion coefficients and the available data, do not reflect the true withdrawals.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7441","usgsCitation":"Kastner, W.M., 1974, Application of statistical techniques to the estimation of ground-water withdrawals in northwestern Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 74-41, iv, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7441.","productDescription":"iv, 11 p.","numberOfPages":"18","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158978,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0041/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349794,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0041/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-102.0475,39.5689],[-102.0476,39.5737],[-102.0485,40.0039],[-101.8612,40.0039],[-101.7787,40.0039],[-101.6233,40.0042],[-101.5453,40.0043],[-101.4107,40.0045],[-101.3694,40.0043],[-101.3224,40.0042],[-101.299,40.0042],[-101.0006,40.0037],[-100.7597,40.0033],[-100.7568,40.0033],[-100.7399,40.0033],[-100.6854,40.0033],[-100.1946,40.0028],[-100.1919,40.0028],[-100.1784,40.0028],[-100.1793,39.9144],[-100.1797,39.8287],[-100.1807,39.7407],[-100.181,39.6541],[-100.1814,39.5675],[-100.1635,39.5673],[-100.1639,39.4793],[-100.1637,39.3927],[-100.1635,39.3062],[-100.1638,39.2187],[-100.1642,39.1321],[-100.1488,39.1318],[-100.1543,38.6966],[-100.2481,38.6976],[-100.4687,38.6988],[-100.5772,38.6997],[-100.5973,38.7003],[-100.6882,38.7037],[-100.8168,38.7032],[-101.1293,38.7001],[-101.485,38.7002],[-101.5694,38.7004],[-102.0455,38.6953],[-102.0461,39.0456],[-102.0463,39.1339],[-102.0475,39.5689]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Cheyenne\",\"state\":\"KS\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a7a9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kastner, William M.","contributorId":66285,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kastner","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198998,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Minerals have been found there in great variety but only as occurrences. Manganese nodules, water (as ice), geothermal energy, coal, petroleum, and natural gas are potential resources that could perhaps be exploited in the future. On the basis of known mineral occurrences in Antarctica and relationships between geologic provinces of Antarctica and those of neighboring Gondwana continents, the best discovery probability for a base-metal deposit in any part of Antarctica is in the Andean orogen; it is estimated to be 0.075 (75 chances in 1,000).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/cir705","usgsCitation":"1974, Mineral resources of Antarctica: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 705, iii, 28 p. :ill. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir705.","productDescription":"iii, 28 p. :ill. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":30224,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1974/0705/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123049,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1974/0705/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69b5b0","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730121,"contributorType":{"id":3,"text":"Compilers"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, Paul L.","contributorId":91086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Paul L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730122,"contributorType":{"id":3,"text":"Compilers"},"rank":2}],"editors":[{"text":"Wright, Nancy A.","contributorId":28586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"Nancy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730119,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, Paul L.","contributorId":91086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Paul L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730120,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}]}}

The actions undertaken to solve this problem, included the collection of data on the time of travel and dispersion characteristics of the tributaries draining the Winston-Salem area and of the main stem of the Yadkin below their confluence.

Fluorescent dye was used to simulate the movement of waterborne wastes under four different flow conditions over a reach of about 41 miles (66 kilometers) beginning at the sewage-treatment plant on Salem Creek and ending on the Yadkin River at High Rock Lake near Salisbury. Total travel time for the entire reach ranges from about 28 hours during periods of high streamflow to about 47 hours during periods of low flow. A soluble substance released as a slug at the sewage-treatment plant disperses longitudinally and laterally as it moves downstream. Longitudinal dispersion, expressed as the time required for a substance released as a slug at the sewage-treatment plant to pass a downstream point, ranges from about 8 hours at the upper end of High Rock Lake during periods of high flow to about 15 hours during periods of low flow. The rate of lateral dispersion also depends on the rate of flow of the Yadkin. During high-flow conditions wastes entering the Yadkin from Winston-Salem disperse across the river in a few miles. Under low-flow conditions lateral dispersion is still incomplete more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) downstream.

Longitudinal dispersion casues the maximum concentrations resulting from slug injections to decrease significantly as the traveltime increases. A relation is presented so the maximum concentration can be estimated at any location downstream from a point of injection at flow rates between about 80 and 500 cubic feet per second (2 and 14 cubic meters per second) at the Muddy Creek gaging station and between about 1,500 and 10,000 cubic feet per second (42 and 280 cubic meters per second) at the Yadkin College gaging station.

Water entering the Yadkin River from Muddy Creek during low-flow periods does not completely disperse laterally for more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) below the confluence, but, when the Yadkin River discharge is above 5,000 cubic feet per second (140 cubic meters per second), lateral mixing is complete within a few miles below the confluence.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.
