From these measurements one can estimate the diffusion coefficient of the sediment with depth. The F (formation factor) values for Indian Ocean sediments varied from 1.6 for a clayey diatom ooze having 87% porosity (70% water content) to 13.6 for a cemented limestone having 25% porosity (11% water content). These formation factors would yield diffusion coefficients for chloride ions in the corresponding sediments of 6.4 x 10<sup>-6</sup> to 1.5 x 10<sup>-6</sup> cm<sup>2</sup>/sec. An extensive aeromagnetic survey, seismic refraction and reflection surveys, and geophysical logs and samples from three wells define the extent and character of the basin. This basin, herein named the Dunbarton Triassic basin, is ∼50 km long, 10 km wide, and trends northeast.</p><p>The northwest margin of the basin is well defined by the aeromagnetic survey, a seismic reflection traverse, and a well that passed through 485 m of Triassic fanglomerate before entering the crystalline metamorphic rocks below. Near the center of the Triassic basin, a well passed through 902 m of maroon Triassic mudstone and sandstone of fluvial origin without penetrating the bottom of the basin.</p><p>The permeability of the Triassic rock is extremely low, and water-transmitting fractures were not penetrated. Even slight water-level disturbances in the Triassic wells require many years to recover. Much of the information on lakes and reservoirs previously collected by Federal and State agencies has never been published. These data were compiled and used as a basis for collecting additional information. This report provides information for use by city, county, and State planning groups as well as for sportsmen, tourists, and others interested in preserving the recreational value of Oregon's lakes.</p><p>Because of the large number of lakes and reservoirs in Oregon, a single report covering the State would be bulky. Therefore, the lake information is being published in several volumes on a county or multicounty basis. Volume .1, published in 1973, covered Clatsop, Columbia, and Tillamook Counties. Benton, Lincoln, and Polk Counties were selected for this report. (See fig. 1.)</p><p>In addition to office compilation of existing data, most lakes were also visited. Visits were made in late summer or early fall when lakes were most accessible and when water temperature and biological activity are at a maximum. The model simulates the interrelations among ground water and surface water including reservoirs, losses, and transmountain diversions, utilizing various water-distribution rules. The model was used to analyze 24 water-management plans designed to reduce shortages in the irrigation supply. One management plan simulated salvage of water from phreatophyte evapotranspiration, different reservoir operation regulations, use of imported ground and surface water, a new reservoir, additional ground-water use, and application of excess streamflow. The resulting annual dependable supply was increased from 610,000 acre-feet to 870,000 acre-feet in relation to an annual demand of 1,100,000 acre-feet. Very little is mentioned, however, on possible interferences. In an attempt to use this technique for the determination of selenium in natural waters, interferences were found. The most serious interference occurred when arsenic was present. As little as 5 μg of arsenic/l suppressed the formation of selenium hydride. Because arsenic may be present with selenium in natural waters, the above method was abandoned in favor of the following atomic absorption spectrophotometric method for the determination of both inorganic and organically bound selenium. Organic selenium compounds, if present, are first decomposed by digestion with potassium permanganate in hot acid solution. The solution is then made basic and the solution evaporated to dryness in the presence of calcium chloride which prevents the loss of selenate during the evaporation. Hydrochloric acid is added to the residue to reduce the selenate to selenite. Quantitative reduction is obtained without loss of selenium by controlling the temperature, time, and acid concentration. It should be emphasized that the selenium must be in the selenite form prior to its final reduction. The selenium is finally liberated from 6M hydrochloric acid solution with stannous chloride and the selenium hydride vapor subsequently removed from solution by aeration and swept by a flow of nitrogen into a hydrogen flame where it is determined by atomic absorption at 196.0 nm. In the Kalamazoo River (a tributary of southeastern Lake Michigan) age group II was commonest in the catches, and no fish older than age IV were sampled. In western Lake Erie, most shiners were in age groups 0-II, and none were older than age IV. Mortality of males was much higher than that of females after age II in Lake Michigan and after age I in Lake Erie. Growth of spottail shiners was fastest in western Lake Erie (125 mm at the end of the third year, sexes combined) and slowest (77 mm) in the Kalamazoo River; in all three waters growth declined rapidly after the first year. Females grew faster than males.\nYoung shiners started growing earlier in the year than older ones in all three waters. Males and females of the same age resumed growth at about the same time. The growing season began as early as mid-May in the Kalamazoo River and continued as late as September or early October in the other two waters. Small spottail shiners in Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River weighed about the same at a given length, but at lengths greater than about 100 mm the lake fish were heavier. In all three waters, spottail shiners matured at about the same length, and males at a somewhat smaller size than females. Smallest mature fish were 65-69 mm long, and the largest immatures were 80-84 mm. In Lake Michigan about half and in Lake Erie about three-quarters of age-I fish were mature, as were all age-II fish in both lakes. In the Kalamazoo River a few fish of age II and all of age III were mature. The spawning season in Lake Michigan in 1964 was from late June or early July to late July, whereas in 1972, which had a colder spring, spawning occurred from mid-July to late August or early September. All shiners in the Kalamazoo River had spawned by the end of June if 1964. Lake Erie spottail shiners spawned during early June to early or mid-July in 1958. Major element constituents, sodium, potassium, calcium, and silica suggest minimum thermal-aquifer temperatures of 140°C or more at 16 of the hot spring complexes. At least five of the hot springs issue mixed waters which may indicate thermal-aquifer temperatures significantly lower than the true thermal-aquifer temperature.</p><p>Sodium is the principal cation in almost all the spring waters. Four springs in northern Nye County and adjacent Eureka County have approximately equal amounts of sodium and calcium. Bicarbonate is the principal anion in most of the spring waters. However, the sampled hot springs on the western edge of the State have chloride as the principal anion. Accidental or abnormal infection was more likely in sick than in normal birds. From 1 to 13 species of nematodes are reported from each host species, including 118 new host records, 3 nematodes new for North America, and 1 new species. Dehydrated salts were added to water of known isotope composition and the solutions were equilibrated with CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>which was sampled for analysis. For comparison similar studies were made using pure water. Results on water nearly coincide with earlier calculations. Salt effects diminish with increasing temperature only for solutions of MgCl<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>and LiCl. Other salt solutions show complex behavior due to the temperature-dependent formation of ion pairs of changing character. Equilibrium fractionations (10<sup>3</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>ln α) between 1 molal solutions and pure water at 25, 100, and 275°C are: NaCl 0.0, −1.5, +1.0; KCl 0.0, −1.0, +2.0; LiCl −1.0, −0.6, −0.5; CaCl<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>−0.4, −1.8, +0.8; MgCl<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>−1.1, −0.7, −0.3; MgSO<sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>−1.1, +0.1, −; NaF (0.8 m) 0.0, −1.5, −0.3; and NH<sub>4</sub>Cl (0.55 m) 0.0, −1.2, −1.3. These effects are significant in the isotope study of hot saline fluids responsible for ore deposition and of fluids found in certain geothermal systems. Special attention was paid to recording maximum and minimum potentials on a seasonal basis and diurnal fluctuations during the wettest and driest periods of the year. Franseria deltoidea developed the lowest potential (—85 bar) of the shrubs recorded and also showed the greatest degree of response to changes in soil moisture on a seasonal basis and evaporative power of the air on a diurnal basis.
