Stratified drift, consisting dominantly of sand and gravel, occurs in irregularly shaped linear deposits that are generally less than a mile wide and less than 125 feet thick; these deposits are found along the Pawcatuck River, its tributaries, and abandoned preglacial channels. Deposits of stratified sand and gravel constitute the principal aquifer in the lower Pawcatuck basin and the only one capable of sustaining yields of 100 gallons per minute or more to individual wells. \r\n\r\nWater available for development in this aquifer consists of water in storage--potential ground-water runoff to streams--plus infiltration that can be induced from streams. Minimum annual ground-water runoff from the sand and gravel aquifer is calculated to be at least 1.17 cubic feet per second per square mile, or 0.76 million gallons per day per square mile. Potential recharge by induced infiltration is estimated to range from about 250 to 600 gallons per day per linear foot of streambed for the principal streams. In most areas, induced infiltration from streams constitutes the major source of water potentially available for development by wells. \r\n\r\nBecause subsurface hydraulic connection in the sand and gravel aquifer is poor in several places, the deposits are conveniently divisible into several ground-water reservoirs. The potential yield from five of the most promising ground-water reservoirs is evaluated by means of mathematical models. Results indicate that continuous withdrawals ranging from 1.3 to 10.3 million gallons per day, and totaling 31 million gallons per day, are obtainable from these reservoirs. Larger yields may be recovered by different well placement, spacing, construction and development, pumping practice, and so forth. \r\n\r\nWithdrawals at the rates indicated will reduce streamflow downstream from pumping centers but generally will not result in streams going dry, provided the water is returned to the basin. Export of water from the basin will require careful consideration of the effects of such withdrawals on low streamflow. Export from the Pawcatuck basin of 27 million gallons per day, estimated to be available from ground-water reservoirs in the upper Pawcatuck basin, in addition to 37.5 million gallons per day available in the lower Pawcatuck basin, will markedly reduce low streamflow. The 90-percent duration flow of the Pawcatuck River at Westerly would be reduced from 75 million gallons per day to perhaps as little as 21 million gallons per day. \r\n\r\nThe chemical quality of water from both the sand and gravel aquifer and associated streams is suitable for most purposes. The water is soft, slightly acidic, and typically has a dissolved-solids content of less than 75 milligrams per liter. Some treatment may be required locally for removal of iron and manganese to meet recommended standards of the U.S. Public Health Service for drinking water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp2033","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., Johnston, H.E., and Malmberg, G.T., 1974, Availability of ground water in the lower Pawcatuck River basin, Rhode Island: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2033, Report: iv, 40 p.; 5 Plates: 20.00 x 38.88 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2033.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 40 p.; 5 Plates: 20.00 x 38.88 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":422303,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25524.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26771,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26769,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137039,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26773,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26772,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26774,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26770,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2033/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Rhode Island","otherGeospatial":"lower Pawcatuck River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.667\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.345\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.614,\n              41.345\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.614,\n              41.667\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.843,\n              41.667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d91d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":143976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnston, Herbert E.","contributorId":16392,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnston","given":"Herbert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143975,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Malmberg, Glenn T.","contributorId":11196,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Malmberg","given":"Glenn","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143974,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Several hypotheses have been advanced to explain the role of food supply as an ultimate factor regulating breeding (Marshall 1951; Lack 1954, 1968; Wynne-Edwards 1962; and others). Another potential influence of food is its being a proximate stimulus to breeding. When certain foods become available they may act as a stimulus as the female requires them to meet her dietary needs during egg formation. Lack (1966a: 24) suggested that the average date of laying by the Great Tit (Parus major) probably resulted from a correlation between spring temperatures and the time of appearance of the insect foods the adult females need to form eggs. He also cited other passerines whose breeding was affected by food supply available to the female. In waterfowl it has been suggested that laying females require invertebrate foods (Moyle 1961, Leitch 1964). If true, this implies that the timing of laying is influenced by those environmental changes that affect food supply.

The Pintail (Anas acuta) lives primarily on plant foods during much of the year (Martin et al. 1951); thus a study of feeding ecology during the nesting season provided an opportunity to evaluate the significance of an invertebrate food source to females during the period of egg formation. Marshall (1951) stated that essentially vegetarian species appear compelled to switch at least partially to a heavier protein diet when feeding their developing young. Production of a clutch of eggs, like tissue growth in the young, requires a special dietary need that presumably should be reflected in the diet of vegetarian species during the period that eggs are being formed. Eight groups of yearling lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were exposed to different combinations of dieldrin and p,p'DDT in water and food. Concentrations of dieldrin and p,p'DDT ranged from 0.006 to 0.010 ppb in water and from 1,700 to 2,300 ppb in food (Oregon moist pellets).\r\nAfter 152 days of exposure to insecticides in water, fish had accumulated an average of 478 ppb dieldrin or 352 ppb p,p'DDT. Fish exposed to dieldrin and p,p'DDT in food accumulated 470 and 648 ppb, respectively. However, it was difficult to determine exactly how much of either insecticide was accumulated from the food because trace amounts (0.003-0.004 ppb) had leached from food or feces. After exposure to the insecticide was terminated, fish eliminated dieldrin at a much faster rate than p,p'DDT. In fish exposed to a combination of dieldrin and p,p'DDT in water and then held for 125 days in uncontaminated water, the total amount of dieldrin (I?g) declined 89%, but the total amount of p,p'DDT remained unchanged.\r\nWe used data from this study to estimate how much p,p'DDT adult Lake Michigan coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) accumulated from water and from food during a 104-day period (May-August 1968). The estimates suggest that during these months coho salmon accumulated most of the body burden of p,p'DDT from food.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Conference on Great Lakes Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Reinert, R.E., Stone, L.J., and Bergman, H.L., 1974, Dieldrin and DDT: accumulation from water and food by lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) in the laboratory: Proceedings of the Conference on Great Lakes Research, v. 17, p. 52-58.","productDescription":"p. 52-58","startPage":"52","endPage":"58","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":132780,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"17","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d8ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reinert, Robert E.","contributorId":101214,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reinert","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308394,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stone, Linda J.","contributorId":30173,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stone","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bergman, Harold L.","contributorId":99099,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bergman","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308393,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

These influences are especially pronounced in the prairie region of central North America where agriculture becomes more intensive each year. The principal task assigned to this Research Center when established in 1965 was to determine the relative impact of these influences on production and to identify those facets of breeding biology, nesting habitat requirements and other factors that may be altered to increase production on lands dedicated for this purpose. A corollary objective was to develop methods for enhancing production of waterfowl and other ground-nesting birds on private lands in agricultural areas. Some of the highlights of our findings to date, together with the results from current work of others, provide new information on waterfowl that indicates: (1) homing instincts are not as specific as indicated by earlier workers, (2) there are differences in pioneering between species, sexes and age classes, (3) strength and duration of pair bonds vary by species and age classes, (4) territorial tolerances for most species are greater than previously indicated, (5) there is differential productivity by age classes in some species, (6) there has been a gradual decline in nesting success in the prairie region the past 30 years, (7) adverse influences of intensive agriculture are increasing, (8) mammalian predation is an important factor, (9) high quality, secure nesting habitat and a complex of wetland types are the essential components of an optimum production unit, (10) the size and shape of blocks of nesting cover are important management considerations, (11) overharvest of local breeding populations is becoming a serious problem in some areas. The project should also help to increase understanding of the tectonics and geologic evolution of the Caribbean region. The Puerto Rico Seismic Program is being conducted by the Geological Survey with support provided by the Puerto Rico Water Resources Authority, an agency responsible for generation and distribution of electric power throughout the Commonwealth. The Program will include the installation of a network of high quality seismograph stations to monitor seismic activity on and around Puerto Rico. These stations will be distributed across the island to record the seismicity as uniformly as possible. The detection and accurate location of small earthquakes, as well as moderate magnitude shocks, will aid in mapping active seismic zones and in compiling frequency of occurrence statistics which ultimately wil be useful in seismic risk-zoning of hte island.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Tarr, A., 1974, New seismic study begins in Puerto Rico: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 6, no. 4, p. 23-26.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"23","endPage":"26","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":316432,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Puerto Rico","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -67.15393066406249,\n              18.516074596589366\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.19512939453125,\n              18.461373375441447\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.30224609375,\n              18.351918656384534\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.18963623046875,\n              18.22674258246203\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.23907470703125,\n              18.054478439496076\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.22259521484375,\n              17.91863608052212\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.05780029296875,\n              17.91602270387768\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.829833984375,\n              17.921249418623304\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.70898437499999,\n              17.934315530810004\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.4837646484375,\n              17.947380678685217\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.33819580078125,\n              17.913409288694826\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.1761474609375,\n              17.908182342733486\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.00860595703125,\n              17.939541705711544\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.80810546875,\n              17.981345545819597\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.7696533203125,\n              18.091033487001273\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.7147216796875,\n              18.158901213171138\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.61859130859375,\n              18.187606552494625\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.5609130859375,\n              18.245003052249718\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.58013916015625,\n              18.325847765727083\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.621337890625,\n              18.40665471391906\n            ],\n            [\n              -65.81085205078125,\n              18.445741249840804\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.082763671875,\n              18.47960905583197\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.39312744140625,\n              18.51347017266187\n            ],\n            [\n              -66.796875,\n              18.505656663040533\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.11822509765625,\n              18.529096121414817\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.15393066406249,\n              18.516074596589366\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56b08fe1e4b010e2af2a5dec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tarr, Arthur C.","contributorId":75903,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tarr","given":"Arthur C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":597098,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Both iodophors were much more toxic below pH 6.0 than at pH 8.0. In general Wescodyne was slightly more toxic than Betadine. Significant egg loss occurred if freshly fertilized eggs were water-hardened in either iodophor at 100 ppm of iodine, but egg loss at 25 ppm of iodine or at 100 ppm if the eggs were disinfected 30 min after water hardening was comparable to the control. Also, there was no effect on the egg mortality or fry development following single or multiple exposures after eggs were water hardened. At pH 6.0 and above, Wescodyne and Betadine at 100 ppm iodine in a 15-min dip would be safe to use on rainbow trout eggs at any stage of development after water hardening. The determinations were made by micropycnometer; water was used as the displacing medium, and salt corrections were based on the refractive index measurements on interstitial water. For saltier brines the \"salinities\" derived from index of refraction are somewhat too low but, for the most part, are adequate for these corrections. Water contents are those determined on the archived samples selected for these studies. They had been kept in cold storage (4°C) in screw-capped glass bottles with poly seal lids or in heat-sealed polyethylene bags for a period of about three months.

The purpose of the measurements was to gain sufficient information on grain density to permit application of the general information or pattern to the bulk water content determinations on the small syringe samples. Bulk density, porosity, and other properties could then be calculated without using volume measurements from the syringes. Whereas the data from weight loss on drying (bulk water content) at 110-120° were considered good, the volume measurements are subject to considerable error, especially in more consolidated sediments, and are not usable at all for shales, more consolidated or cemented rocks, and anhydrite.

Detailed comparisons with the GRAPE determinations were also an objective. The Red Sea cores offer a particularly good opportunity to test the validity of these measurements, which have been increasingly questioned.
","language":"English","publisher":"National Science The hydrogen isotope data indicate that meteoric water was the dominant component of the ore-forming fluids at Cortez. The hydrogen isotope data support geologic evidence for a Tertiary age for the deposit. The oxidation of the ore probably occurred during the deposition of postore calcite and was caused by waters whose oxygen isotopic composition was distinctly different from that of the ore fluids. The carbon isotope data suggest that the only carbon present in the ore fluids was derived from solution of the host rock. The lead and sulfur data are consistent with a possible sedimentary derivation for the gold in the ore. Lead and sulfur isotope distributions indicate that much of the galena mineralization in the area occurred during the Jurassic.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Rye, R.O., Doe, B.R., and Wells, J.D., 1974, Stable isotope and lead isotope study of the Cortez, Nevada, gold deposit and surrounding area: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 2, no. 1, p. 13-23.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"13","endPage":"23","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314296,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":314295,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1974/vol2issue1/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"20.9 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Cortez Gold Deposit","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.51035308837892,\n              40.561547146781486\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.58004760742189,\n              40.54433048304287\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.62227630615234,\n              40.49500373230525\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.57249450683594,\n              40.44433429864565\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.49318695068358,\n              40.444856858961764\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.4382553100586,\n              40.48429842982662\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.44889831542969,\n              40.55059160022448\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.51035308837892,\n              40.561547146781486\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"2","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56978340e4b039675d00a6f9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rye, R.
