Deep-well injection has been selected by the Dade County Water and Sewer Authority as a means of disposing treated waste water in southeast Dade County. Preliminary plans call for the construction of a county-owned sanitary sewage treatment plant and several 3,000-foot deep injection wells at 1,000-foot intervals on Levee 31E. As a first stage, drilling of seven wells, capable of accepting, in the aggregate, 30 mgd (million gallons per day) of treated liquid waste, is planned. The locations of the proposed sites (fig. 1) were selected by the consultants for the Authority.
A reconnaissance was made in the vicinity of the proposed well sites to determine the chloride content of surface and ground water because this information is needed to formulate plans for the safe disposal of salt water during drilling and testing of the injection wells. The reconnaissance was part of a cooperative program with the Dade County Water and Sewer Authority to investigate the hydrologic effects of injecting treated waste water into a deep-saline aquifer.
The area of investigation is near Cutler Ridge in southeast Dade County. It occupies about 51/2 square miles bounded on the east by S.W. 77th Avenue extended, on the west by S.W. 97th Avenue, on the south by Coconut Palm Drive, and on the north by Old Cutler Road (fig. 1). The area for the investigation was selected by the Authority and their consultants.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 25), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.
The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1972 and for the 10-year period 1963-72. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the periods spring 1972 to spring 1973 and spring 1963 to spring 1973. Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.

Packer seats were poor in part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions. Thus, some zones had to be tested several times.
The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from 14.2 meters (46.6 feet) below land surface in the upper interval to 33.7 meters (110.6 feet) below land surface in one of the intervals near a depth of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet).
The specific capacity of the open hole from 83.5 to 1,980.6 meters (274 to 6,498 feet) was 3.26 cubic meters per day per meter (0.182 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown after the hole had been jetted at an average rate of 763 cubic meters per day (140 gallons per minute) for about 41 hours. Transmissivity computed from the recovery of water level after jetting stopped was 2.97 cubic meters per day per meter (239.2 gallons per day per foot).
The relative specific capacities of isolated intervals ranged from 0.001 cubic meter per day per meter (less than 0.001 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown to 2.765 cubic meters per day per meter (0.155 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown.

Preliminary experiments demonstrated that the birds were indifferent to 0.03 M NaCl in water. Both control and experimental animals exhibited indifference to the solutions at the lowest concentration and aversion at the highest. The data suggest that the added sodium chloride makes the sucrose stimulus more discriminable.

The derived solubility product (KS0) for zero ionic strength was close to that calculated from Latimer's thermodynamic data (10-9.7 7). The relative ease of precipitation of fluorite from these water samples indicates that equilibrium with respect to fluorite may occur in some ground-water systems.

At some locations, predominantly sedimentary deposits were penetrated; at others, basalt flows predominated. The so-called Mud Lake-Market Lake barrier denotes a change in geology. From the vicinity of the barrier area, as described by Stearns, Crandall, and Steward (1938, p. 111), up the water-table gradient for at least a few tens of miles, the saturated geologic section consists predominantly of beds of sediments that are intercalated with numerous basalt flows. Downgradient from the barrier, sedimentary deposits are not common and practically all the water-bearing formations are basalt, at least to the depths explored so far. Thus, the barrier is a transition zone from a sedimentary-basaltic sequence to a basaltic sequence. The sedimentary-basaltic sequence forms a complex hydrologic system in which water occurs under water-table conditions in the upper few tens of feet of saturated material and under artesian conditions in the deeper material in the southwest part of the region. The well data indicate that southwest of the barrier, artesian pressures are not significant. Southwest of the barrier, few sedimentary deposits occur in the basalt section and, as described by Mundorff, Crosthwaite, and Kilburn (1964). ground water occurs in a manner typical of the Snake Plain aquifer. In several wells, artesian pressures are higher in the deeper formations than in the shallower ones, but the reverse was found in a few wells. The available data are not adequate to describe the water-bearing characteristics of the artesian aquifer nor the effects that pumping in one zone would have on adjacent zones. Up to 0.2 g fish tissue is heated in a stream of O2 (1.2 L/min) for 3.5 min in 1 tube of a 2-tube induction furnace. The released mercury vapor and combustion products are carried by the stream of O2 through a series of traps (6% NaOH scrubber, water condenser, and Mg(ClO4)2 drying tube) and the mercury is collected in a 10 mm diameter column of 24 gauge gold wire (8 g) cut into 3 mm lengths. The resulting amalgam is heated in the second tube of the induction furnace and the volatilized mercury is measured with a mercury vapor meter equipped with a recorder-integrator. Total analysis time is approximately 8 min/sample. The detection limit is less than 0.002 μg and the system is easily converted for use with other biological materials, water, and sediments.

The samples show systematic changes as the water depth of collection (and eruption) decreases: radially elongate vesicles and concentric zones of vesicles appear at about 700 m depth and are conspicuous to shallow water; the smoothed volume percent of vesicles increases from 5% at 1000 m, 10% at 700 m, to 16% at 500 m, and the scatter in degree of vesicularity increases in shallower water; specific gravity decreases from 2.7±0.1 at 1000 m to 2.3±0.3 at 100 m.
Bulk sulfur content for the outer 2 cm averages 843 ppm up to a depth of 200 m, then drops off rapidly in shallower water owing to degassing. Sulfur content below 200 m is independent of depth (or geographic position), and the melt is apparently saturated with sulfur, but the excess cannot escape the lava unless another vehicle carries it out. Only shallower than 200 m, where intense vesiculation of other gases occurs can excess sulfur be lost from the lava erupting on the sea floor.
H2O+110° averages about 0.35 percent and H2O+150° about 0.25 percent, and both apparently decrease in water shallower than 200 m as a result of degassing. H2O+ (below 200 m) decreases with distance from Iceland or increasing depth, presumably as a result of either adsorption of water on the surface of shallower, more vesicular rocks; or more likely due to the presence of the Iceland hot mantle plume supplying undifferentiated primordial material, relative to lavas of the Reykjanes Ridge supplied from the low velocity layer already depleted in volatiles and large lithophile elements. The H2O+110°/S ratio of lava erupting below 200 m water depth ranges from 3 to 5 which is comparable to reliable gas analyses from oceanic basaltic volcanoes.
