Water that is slightly turbid can be successfully injected for a period of time, but generally results in constantly declining yields and capacity for recharge. Redevelopment through pumping and surging significantly prolongs the life of recharge wells under some conditions. Surface spreading is little practiced on the High Plains, but locally may be a feasible means of artificial recharge.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7310","usgsCitation":"Brown, R., and Signor, D.C., 1973, Artificial-recharge experiments and operations on the Southern High Plains of Texas and New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 73-10, v, 54 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7310.","productDescription":"v, 54 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119098,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_73_10.jpg"},{"id":13939,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/wri10-73/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":327294,"rank":101,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/wri10-73/pdf/wri10-73.pdf","size":"5.2 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db672bd8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brown, Richmond F.","contributorId":40577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Richmond F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196285,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Signor, Donald C.","contributorId":13220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Signor","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196284,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

For a low river-discharge period in August 1970, use of the model yielded an estimated residence time of wedge water to be 6.3 days in the present waterways estuary and 8.6 days in the wider and deeper proposed-waterways estuary--a 37-percent increase. June-September 1970 and for the estuary about 4 miles upstream from its mouth, the model estimates indicate that dissolved-oxygen values in the wedge of the proposed-waterways estuary would be as much as 1.4 milligrams per liter lower and would average 0.4 milligram per liter lower than (average difference significant at 95-percent confidence level) dissolved-oxygen values in the wedge of the present-waterways estuary. \r\n\r\nExtrapolation to low dissolved-oxygen values of a regression between the predicted dissolved oxygen for both the proposed and present-waterways estuaries suggests that 4 miles upstream of the estuary mouth oxygen would be completely depleted from the proposed-waterways estuary wedge whereas there still would be 0.2 milligram of oxygen per liter of water in the wedge of the present-waterways estuary.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr73102","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Haushild, W., and Stoner, J., 1973, Predicted effects of proposed navigation improvements on residence time and dissolved oxygen of the salt wedge in the Duwamish River estuary, King County, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-102, 13 p. :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73102.","productDescription":"13 p. :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155134,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0102/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52612,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0102/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acee4b07f02db67fde2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Haushild, W.L.","contributorId":48953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haushild","given":"W.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189874,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stoner, J.D.","contributorId":58261,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stoner","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189875,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The investigation was made to determine how salt water from the Gulf of Mexico moves in the river-canal complex, and how the factors that control salt-water movement--tides and discharge--have changed since canal construction. In the river below the bypass channel, salt water moves inland as a wedge beneath the fresh water with upstream tidal flows and back toward the Gulf with downstream tidal flows. The salt front in the river tends to move farthest upstream near times of relatively high water, or higher high water preceded by relatively high higher low water, especially during of after several days of rising mean tide level.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri725","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of the Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1973, Salt-water movement in the lower Withlacoochee River-Cross Florida Barge Canal Complex: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 5-72, iv, 32 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri725.","productDescription":"iv, 32 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":285,"text":"Florida Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":271059,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1972/0005/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -87.63,24.52 ], [ -87.63,31.0 ], [ -80.03,31.0 ], [ -80.03,24.52 ], [ -87.63,24.52 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdef0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, Peter W.","contributorId":57820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bush","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The results of test drilling and an infiltration test indicate that the subsurface material at the spreading grounds is permeable enough to allow recharged water to percolate to the water table. The data indicate that fault K extends into the Waterman Canyon-East Twin Creek area and may impede the lateral movement of recharged water. Fault K has no known surface expression and therefore probably does not affect the highly permeable younger alluvium. If that is so, fault K will be less effective as a barrier to ground-water movement as the recharge mound rises. Monitoring of the observation wells near the spreading grounds as the planned recharge operation proceeds should provide data about the hydrologic effects of fault K near the land surface.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division,","doi":"10.3133/ofr73358","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Warner, J.W., and Moreland, J.A., 1973, Artificial recharge in the Waterman Canyon-East Twin Creek area, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-358, iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73358.","productDescription":"iv, 44 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157510,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0358/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53810,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0358/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":53811,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0358/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abbe4b07f02db672c47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Warner, J. Available data suggest that 0.2 to 0.9 foot (0.06 to 0.3 m) of subsidence probably has occurred from 1935-42 to 1964 in an extensive agricultural area of heavy ground-water pumping between Zamora and Davis, and that as much as 2 feet (0.6 m) of subsidence has occurred in at least two areas of pumping overdraft--east of Zamora, and west of Arbuckle. \r\n\r\nA comparison of maps showing long-term water-level decline and average annual ground-water pumpage indicates several other areas of probable subsidence. In six general areas--northwest of Sacramento; northeast of Sacramento; southeast of Yuba City; 10 miles (16 km) north of Willows; 20 miles (32 km) north of Willows; and especially in the Arbuckle area,ground-water declines have quite probably produced significant subsidence. In two areas of most intensive pumping, no long-term water-level declines have occurred, and no subsidence is indicated.\r\n\r\nIf problems of land subsidence are of concern in Sacramento Valley, and if estimates of historic subsidence or subsidence potential are needed, serious consideration should be given to a field program of basic-data collection. Second-order leveling along a few carefully selected lines of existing control, and the installation and operation of two or three compaction recorders in areas of continuing water-level decline, would provide helpful data for estimating .past and future subsidence.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr741064","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Lofgren, B.E., and Ireland, R.L., 1973, Preliminary investigation of land subsidence in the Sacramento Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-1064, Report: 32 p.; 4 Figures: 17.20 x 22.10 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr741064.","productDescription":"Report: 32 p.; 4 Figures: 17.20 x 22.10 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":492916,"rank":7,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/figure-4.pdf","text":"Figure 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":492915,"rank":6,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/figure-3.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":492914,"rank":5,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/figure-2.pdf","text":"Figure 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":492913,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/figure-1.pdf","text":"Figure 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52984,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":391027,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52091.htm"},{"id":156134,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/1064/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Sacramento Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.5,\n 38.5\n ],\n [\n -121.1667,\n 38.5\n ],\n [\n -121.1667,\n 40.5833\n ],\n [\n -122.5,\n 40.5833\n ],\n [\n -122.5,\n 38.5\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aabe4b07f02db669e77","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lofgren, B. A good vegetative cover is sustained in the mountains by the high precipitation, whereas vegetation is sparse in the lower semiarid parts of the basin.

In the mountainous areas snowmelt runoff transports most of the sediment during April through June. In the semiarid parts of the basin, little runoff occurs during most years, and most of the sediment is transported when heavy, warm rains fall on extensive accumulations of snow. During the 1970 and 1971 water years, the measured suspended-sediment concentrations in the upper Columbia River basin ranged from less than 1 milligram per liter in many streams to more than 200,000 milligrams per liter in Providence Coulee. The estimated long-term annual suspended-sediment yields range from less than 10 tons per square mile in many basins to more than 500 tons per square mile in Providence Coulee.

Man's activities have caused only a slight increase in the magnitude of the sediment discharge to the Columbia River. Although cultivation has initiated a large increase in erosion on the Columbia Plateau, and winds there move some of the loosened or easily eroded soils to depressions and runoff channels, sediment transport by streams has not increased greatly. This is because the little surface runoff on the plateau does not transport the soils to streams and to the Columbia River.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7339","collaboration":"Prepared by Water Resources Division, Washington District, in cooperation with State of Washington Department of Ecology","usgsCitation":"Nelson, L.M., 1973, Sediment transport by streams in the Upper Columbia River Basin, Washington, May 1969-June 1971: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 73-39, Report: v, 69 p.; 1 Plate: 20.29 x 22.44 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7339.","productDescription":"Report: v, 69 p.; 1 Plate: 20.29 x 22.44 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":377252,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0039/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":377251,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0039/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159630,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0039/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Columbia River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.5,\n              46\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.5,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              46\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fbefc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, Leonard M.","contributorId":96695,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200528,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

George Lock and Dam, the largest manmade structure in the South, extends over 2llz miles across the flood plain of the Chattahoochee River at Fort Gaines, Clay County, in southwest Georgia and in Henry County, in southeast Alabama. The multipurpose dam consists of two rolled-filled earth dikes, a concrete spillway, a single-stage lock with an 88-foot lift, and a 130,000 kilowatt capacity powerhouse. The foundation of the dam at the river is constructed in the Clayton Formation, and the earth dikes are constructed on river terraces at about 150 feet above msl (mean sea level). At the damsite, the top of the Clayton Formation consists of an \"earthy\" limestone, which is about 35 feet thick except in the river channel, where it is 12 to 15 feet thick; a \"shell\" limestone, which averages about 40 feet thick; and a basal \"sandy\" limestone, which averages about 35 feet thick. The Providence Sand underlies the \"sandy\" limestone and its thickness is about 175 feet at the damsite. These formations contain water under artesian conditions. The \"shell\" unit of the Clayton was the principal water-bearing formation pumped during construction of the lock and dam. The large yields of the wells from concentrated areas over extended periods of time indicate that in the vicinity of the Chattahoochee River, the Clayton Formation is a productive aquifer with transmissivity ranging from 48,000 to 77,000 gpd per ft. (gallons per day per foot) and storage coefficient ranging from 2.5 x 10?3 to 2.8 x 10?5. At the spillway site, pumpage ranged from an average of 1,700 to 8,400 gpm (gallons per minute) during the period April 1957 to July 1959; at the powerhouse site, pumpage ranged from 1,600 to 5,000 gpm during the period October 1957 to September 1961; and at the lock site, pumpage ranged from 4,000 to 5,000 gpm during the period July 1960 through December 1961. The large yields represent a source of large quantities of ground water available for industrial and other uses in an area readily accessihle by barge from the Gulf of Mexico to Columbus, Ga. During dewatering, the potentiometric surface was lowered from a pre-pumping altitude of about 115 to 120 feet above msl to a minimum altitude of about 40 feet above msl, or near the bottom of the \"shell\" limestone. The stage of the Chattahoochee River ranged from about 20 to 60 feet above the potentiometric surface at the dewatering sites. The Chattahoochee River seemingly is recharging the Clayton Formation near the damsite, possibly through large solution cavities such as were observed during construction of the spillway site at the river. Furthermore, a \"honeycombed\" network of large solution holes caused the collapse of a section of \"earthy\" limestone near the powerhouse site. Some underground leakage is expected to occur at the damsite because of the cavernous condition of the limestone, particularly on the Alabama side of the river.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/wri273","usgsCitation":"Stewart, J.W., 1973, Dewatering of the Clayton Formation during construction of the Walter F George Lock and Dam, Fort Gaines, Clay County, Georgia: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 2-73, v, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri273.","productDescription":"v, 22 p.","startPage":"i","endPage":"22","numberOfPages":"27","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":91833,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0002/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":58777,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0002/pdf/wri732.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":24582,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0002/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":116829,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0002/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Georgia","county":"Clay County","city":"Fort Gaines","otherGeospatial":"Walter F George Lock and Dam","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -87,29 ], [ -87,34.5 ], [ -83,34.5 ], [ -83,29 ], [ -87,29 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dbf8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stewart, J. Well production in the high-yield area is mainly from the Newburg zone, a permeable stratum in the lower part of the Bass Island group. A ' structure contour map on the top of the Lockport Dolomite shows that the Newburg zone conforms to the configuration of the Cincinnati arch. The chemical quality of the water in the consolidated-rock aquifers is intimately related to the regional flow system, and undergoes a progressive change from a calcium bicarbonate-type in recharge areas to a calcium sulfate-type in areas of natural discharge.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Columbus, C., collected evaporation data at Lake Michie, Durham's 480-acre water-supply reservoir, for 10 consecutive years from September 1961 to September 1971. Wind speed, air temperature, and water temperature-collected continuously-were used in conjunction with water-budget data to calibrate the semi-empirical mass-transfer equation, E Nu(eo - ea), where E is evaporation; N is the mass-transfer coefficient, which is a constant for a given lake; u is wind speed; eo is the vapor pressure of the saturated air at the water surface; and ea is the vapor pressure of the surrounding air. For evaporation expressed in inches, the mass-transfer coefficient for Lake Michie is 0.0036.

During the study period the average annual evaporation from Lake Michie was 37.9 inches. The physiographic units in the area are (1) Sierra Nevada, (2) dissected uplands, (3) low alluvial plains and fans, (4) river flood plains and channels, and (5) overflow lands.

Geologic units consist of consolidated rocks and unconsolidated deposits. The dominant structure of the geologic units is that of a homocline, which reflects the southwestward-tilted fault block of the Sierra Nevada. The consolidated rocks include: (1) basement complex (pre-Tertiary), (2) marine sandstone and shale (Cretaceous), (3) Ione Formation and other sedimentary rocks (Eocene), (4) Valley Springs Formation (late? Miocene), and (5) the Mehrten Formation (Miocene and Pliocene). In the eastern part of the area, the consolidated rocks generally yield small quantities of water to wells except for the Mehrten Formation which is an important aquifer.

The unconsolidated deposits include: (1) continental deposits (Pliocene and Pleistocene?), (2) lacustrine and marsh deposits (Pleistocene), (3) older alluvium (Pleistocene and Holocene?), (4) younger alluvium (Holocene), and (5) flood-basin deposits (Holocene). The continental deposits and older alluvium are the main water-yielding units in the unconsolidated deposits. The lacustrine and marsh deposits (E-clay) and the flood-basin deposits yield little water to wells, and the younger alluvium in most places probably yields only moderate quantities of water to wells.

There are three ground-water bodies in the Modesto-Merced area: (1) the unconfined water body, (2) the confined water body, and (3) the water body in consolidated rocks. The unconfined water body occurs in the unconsolidated deposits above and east of the E-clay, except in the western and southern parts of the area where clay lenses occur and semiconfined conditions exist. The confined water body occurs in the unconsolidated deposits below the E-clay and extends downward to the base of fresh water. The water body in consolidated rocks occurs under both perched and confined conditions.

Ground-water movement in the unconfined and the confined water bodies is generally westward toward the valley trough. In the unconfined water body, the water also moves toward the major rivers, and toward pumping depressions at Modesto and near El Nido. Because of the higher head in the unconfined water body, water slowly moves from it through the E-clay to the underlying confined water body.

Surface water is used extensively for irrigation in most of the study area; consequently, shallow water in the unconfined water body has to be controlled by pumping. Nevertheless, water levels near Modesto declined about 6 feet between 1958 and 1962, for the most part during the dry years 1959-61. Near El Nido, water levels declined about 70 feet between 1942 and 1967. In the confined water body, water levels were high in the winter and spring and low in the summer and fall, reflecting irrigation practices. In the southwestern part of the area, water levels in the confined water body declined about 14 feet from 1962 to 1968 and rose slightly after 1968, whereas in the northwestern part water levels remained fairly constant.

Water from the upper reaches of the Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Merced, and Chowchilla Rivers is calcium bicarbonate in chemical type and is of excellent quality. As those rivers cross the valley floor, their water quality is generally degraded by return flows from irrigated land, and in the Tuolumne River by saline water discharged from abandoned gas wells. Average dissolvedsolids content in the major rivers, as indicated by chemical analyses, do not exceed 400 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) except in the San Joaquin River where average dissolved-solids content has not exceeded 1,050 mg/l.

Water from minor streams in the area is bicarbonate in chemical type with dissolved-solids content ranging from 56 mg/1 to about 350 mg/l.

Although chloride-type fresh ground water occurs in the unconfined and confined water bodies and in the water body in consolidated rocks, most of the fresh ground water is a bicarbonate type that has a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 mg/l.

Water having dissolved solids in excess of about 2,000 mg/1 is considered to be saline. Saline water extends below the base of fresh water to the basement complex and, except in the extreme eastern part, underlies most of the study area. Saline water also occurs as lenses above the base of fresh water in the unconfined and confined water bodies.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri736","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Page, R.W., and Balding, G.O., 1973, Geology and quality of water in the Modesto-Merced area, San Joaquin Valley, California, with a brief section on hydrology: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 73-6, v, 85 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri736.","productDescription":"v, 85 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":367180,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0006/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158886,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0006/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Joaquin Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              38\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              38\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.5,\n              37\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db6842bf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Page, R. This report presents hydrologic data that document the extent of flooding, flood profiles, and frequency of flooding on reaches of both streams. The data presented provide a technical basis for formulating effective flood-plain zoning that will minimize existing and future flood problems. The report also can be useful for locating waste-disposal and water-treatment facilities, and for the development of recreational areas.\r\nThe area studied includes the reach of Little River on the Garvin and Idabel 7 1/2-minute quadrangles (sheet 1) and the reach of Glover Creek on the southwest quarter of the Golden 15-minute quadrangle (sheet 2). The flood boundaries delineated on the maps are the limits of flooding during the December 1971 and October 1972 floods. Any attempt to delineate the flood boundaries on streams in the study area other than Glover Creek and Little River was considered to be beyond the scope of this report.\r\n\r\nThe general procedure used in defining the flood boundaries was to construct the flood profiles from high-water marks obtained by field surveys and by records at three stream-gaging stations (two on Little River and one on Glover Creek.). The extent of flooding was delineated on the topographic maps by using the flood profiles to define the flood elevations at various points along the channel and locating the elevations on the map by interpolating between contours (lines of equal ground elevation). In addition, flood boundaries were defined in places by field survey, aerial photographs, and information from local residents. The accuracy of the flood boundaries is consistent with the scale and contour interval of the maps (1 inch = 2,000 feet; contour interval 10 and 20 feet), which means the flood boundaries are drawn as accurately as possible on maps having 10- and 20-foot contour intervals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri735","usgsCitation":"Thomas, W., and Corley, R.K., 1973, Floods of 1971 and 1972 on Glover Creek and Little River in southeastern Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 73-5, 2 Plates: 40.78 x 34.60 inches and 22.82 x 31.81 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri735.","productDescription":"2 Plates: 40.78 x 34.60 inches and 22.82 x 31.81 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":365419,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0005/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":365420,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0005/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159759,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0005/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b1077","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thomas, Wilbert O.","contributorId":22327,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Wilbert O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202719,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Corley, Robert K.","contributorId":93098,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corley","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202720,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Many test wells were drilled from 1900 until Humble Oil and Refining Company developed Florida's first producing well (Gulf Coast Realties Corp. No. 1) in September 1943 at Sunniland. (See fig. 1.) The first production well was drilled to 11,626 feet below sea level and had an initial production of 97 barrels of oil per day. Since this first well was developed many more have been drilled in the Sunniland field, and at this time (1973) 17 wells are producing about 50,000 barrels of oil per month (W. R. Oglesby, written commun., 1972). The Sunniland field, in north central Collier County, remained the chief oil producing field in Florida until 1966 when the Sunoco-Felda field, about 20 miles north of the Sunniland field, began producing more oil (Babcock, 1970). Oil produced in both fields is transported by pipeline to Port Everglades, on the east coast.

Anticipation of oil exploration in the Big Cypress area (fig. 1) aroused concern the effects a producing field would have on the quality of surface water in the area. The Florida Department of Natural Resources requested the U.S. Geological Survey to determine whether there have been any such effects. The 29-year old Sunniland oil field was chosen for this preliminary evaluation. The method relates basin characteristics, including drainage area, percentage of forest cover, percentage of water area, latitude, and longitude, with peak flow characteristics.

Regression equations for each of eight regions are presented for determination of QIQ/ the peak discharge, which, on the average, will be exceeded once in 10 years. Peak flows, Q25 and Q 50 , can then be estimated from Q25/Q10 and Q-50/Q-10 ratios developed for each region. Nomographs are included which solve the equations for basins between 1 and 50 square miles.

The regional regression equations were developed using multiple regression techniques. Annual peaks for 303 sites were analyzed in the study. These included all records on unregulated streams with drainage areas less than about 500 square miles with 10 years or more of record or which could readily be extended to 10 years on the basis of nearby streams. The log-Pearson Type III method as modified and a digital computer were employed to estimate magnitude and frequency of floods for each of the 303 gaged sites. A large number of physical and climatic basin characteristics were determined for each of the gaged sites. The multiple regression method was then applied to determine the equations relating the floodflows and the most significant basin characteristics. For convenience of the users, several equations were simplified and some complex characteristics were deleted at the sacrifice of some increase in the standard error. Standard errors of estimate and many other statistical data were computed in the analysis process and are available in the Boise district office files. The analysis showed that QIQ was the best defined and most practical index flood for determination of the Q25 and 0,50 flood estimates.

Regression equations are not developed because of poor definition for areas which total about 20,000 square miles, most of which are in southern Idaho. These areas are described in the report to prevent use of regression equations where they do not apply. They include urbanized areas, streams affected by regulation or diversion by works of man, unforested areas, streams with gaining or losing reaches, streams draining alluvial valleys and the Snake Plain, intense thunderstorm areas, and scattered areas where records indicate recurring floods which depart from the regional equations. Maximum flows of record and basin locations are summarized in tables and maps.

The analysis indicates deficiencies in data exist. To improve knowledge regarding flood characteristics in poorly defined areas, the following data-collection programs are recommended. Gages should be operated on a few selected small streams for an extended period to define floods at long recurrence intervals. Crest-stage gages should be operated in representative basins in urbanized areas, newly developed irrigated areas and grasslands, and in unforested areas. Unusual floods should continue to be measured at miscellaneous sites on regulated streams and in intense thunderstorm-prone areas. The relationship between channel geometry and floodflow characteristics should be investigated as an alternative or supplement to operation of gaging stations. Documentation of historic flood data from newspapers and other sources would improve the basic flood-data base.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
