The area comprises 9,700 square kilometers largely of catinga-covered tabular uplands which are drained by the perennial Rio Parnatba. The climate is hot and humid most of the year but with distinct wet and dry seasons. Temperature extremes range from 20?C to 39?C and the annum rainfall averages 1,200 millimeters. \r\n\r\nThe area's ground-water reservoir is contained chiefly in sandstone aquifers of six westward-dipping sedimentary rock formations, all part of the Maranhao sedimentary basin. The youngest of these formations, namely the Piaut (Pennsylvarian), Poti (Mississippian), Longa (Upper Devonian), and Cabecas (Middle Devoniar), contain the principal aquifers. Precipitation is the primary source of recharge to these aquifers and is more than sufficient to replenish current withdrawals from wells. Underlying the principal aquifers are the untapped Pimenteiras and Serra Grande Formations (both Lower Devonian) which in areas adjacent to the report area are moderately good to excellent water producers. These aquifers are recharged principally by lateral inflow from the east. Water also occurs in the alluvial deposits (Quaternary) underlying the flood plain of the Rio Parnatba but recurrent and uncontrolled flooding at present (1966) precludes their development. Of little economic importance, because they lie above the zone of saturation, are the thin erosional remnants of the Pastos Bons (Upper Triassic), Matuca, and Pedra de Fogo (both Permian) Formations. \r\n\r\nThere are in the report area about 200 drilled wells most of which are pumped with power-driven engines. The wells range from 40 to 500 meters deep but most do not exceed 150 meters, and practically all are completed open hole. Yields range from 500 liters per day for 6-inch-diameter domestic wells to 240,000 liters per hour for 10-inch high-capacity municipal wells. Although there are many more dug wells than drilled wells, dug wells account for less than 1 percent of the current (1966) draft. The current annual withdrawal from the principal aquifers is approximately 5 million cubic meters of which almost half is used for municipal supply and the rest for rural household and irrigation uses. Additional water for public supply is available from aquifers now being pumped, and larger yields probably could be obtained from rural wells designed to take full advantage of the aquifer. Analyses of 28 samples show that the chemical quality of the water is well below the \r\n\r\naccepted limits of mineral concentration for most uses. Water from the Longa Formation averages 842 milligrams per liter in total dissolved solids and is more mineralized than that in the Piaul and Port Formations which contain water averaging less than 300 milligrams per liter. The water in the Piaui and Poti aquifers is the most suitable in the area for irrigation and has SAR values of C1-S1 and C2-S1. \r\n\r\nThe quantities of water currently being used for irrigation are relatively small (600,000 cubic meters annually) but will increase substantially when intensive irrigation becomes a reality. Divisio de Hydrogeologia da Superintendancia do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste estimates that about 2,500 million cubic meters of water per year would be needed to irrigate about 250,000 hectares in the Teresina-Campo Maior area (about 25 percent of the total area). This goal, however, is not likely to be realized as the water requirement is five times the estimated natural recharge to the aquifers of the area. \r\n\r\nMost of the water-bearing formations in the report area have barely been tapped and can be developed a great deal more. In fact, the current annual withdrawal from the principal aquifers is less than 0.0025 percent of a conservative estimate of annual replenishment from rainfall. The instrument used was a commercial \"falling stream\" turbidimeter that measured the relative transparency of a gravity induced smooth flat sample stream formed as the flow drops vertically from an orifice.</p>\n<p>Output results were recorded on a strip-chart recorder as a function of concentration, up to about 100,000 mg/2, for a range of particle sizes and for three kinds of sediment--a fine sand, a silty alluvial soil, and a clayey residual soil. The sensitivity range was improved by use of both the 1/8- and 1/16-inch thick orifices. The use of the two orifice or nozzle sizes provided data useful in evaluation of the effect of particle size and type of sediment at different concentrations. The unique relative transparency-concentration relationships were more linear for coarse than for fine sediments of a given kind. It was concluded that curvature in this relationship resulted from light reflections from the surface of the particles and (or) the fact that some particles moved through the system while in the \"shadow\" of other particles closer to the light source.</p>\n<p>The ratio of suspended-sediment concentration to the square root of the median particle size of sand-sized sediments was found to be a useful parameter for elimination of the effect of particle size in the relative transparency-concentration relationships. Thus it was possible to evaluate the effect of the different type of sediment on the relative transparency independent of particle size. The use of this parameter to eliminate the effect of particle size was unsuccessful for finer sediments. -</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70173978","usgsCitation":"Guy, H., and Olson, R., 1972, Falling-stream turbidimeter as a means of measuring sediment concentrations in streams: Open-File Report, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70173978.","productDescription":"58 p.","numberOfPages":"62","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324035,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70173978.jpg"},{"id":324183,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70173978/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"576913bae4b07657d19ff052","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Guy, Harold P.","contributorId":6434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Guy","given":"Harold P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":639911,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Olson, Richard C.","contributorId":172202,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Olson","given":"Richard C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":639912,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

As reported previously, most constituents in pore waters from the biogenic oozes exhibit minor changes in chemistry relative to sea water. In the terrigenous-hemipelagic sediments interstitial solutions initially of sea water composition have undergone considerable reaction. These reactions have produced large changes in the concentrations of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfate (SO<sub>4</sub>) and HCO<sub>3</sub> relative to sea water. In addition, this set of samples documents significant diagenetic alteration of sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl). Potassium exhibits little change in most samples, but in a few instances is depleted at depth. </p><p>The analytical techniques employed are identical to those described in earlier volumes of the Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. In an effort to identify alteration of sample composition during storage, salinity determinations<sup>2</sup> are made on the pore solution immediately upon their recovery from the sediments. The same measurement is made in the laboratory when the sample containers are opened for analysis. Occasionally evidence of evaporation is found as in Sample 104-2-5; the shipboard salinity was 32%o, while the laboratory measurement yielded 38%o. Changes of 3 to 4 per cent were also noted in several other samples as noted in the tables. </p><p>Adjustment of the analytically determined concentrations has been made and the corrected values presented in Tables 1 and 2. Inhibition of Na+,K+-activated adenosinetriphosphatase (NaK-ATPase) and Mg++-dependent ATPase (Mg-ATPase) by DDT, endosulfan and dicofol has been demonstrated in gill, brain and kidney microsomes of rainbow trout (1,2). Intestinal and gill ATPases in marine teleosts were recently reported to be sensitive to organochlorines (3). Inhibition of ATPases by PCB's has been recently shown in bluegill kidney, brain and liver (5). The fulvous tree duck (<i>Dendrocygna bicolor</i>), which depends on the rice field habitats and is highly susceptible to aldrin-dieldrin poisoning, is suffering a serious population decline in that area. Dead waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines were collected on study areas in Wharton, Brazoria, and Chambers counties, Texas, from 1967 through 1971. Residues of aldrin or dieldrin were found in all samples of bird casualties and in all eggs, scavengers, predators, fish, frogs, invertebrates, and soils. Fulvous tree ducks appeared to be less resistant to aldrin than other ducks. Dieldrin residues in brains of dead fulvous tree ducks were low, but whole-body residues were as high as 16 ppm. Brains of other dead ducks and geese averaged 10 ppm dieldrin. Some dead birds were exposed by eating treated rice seed, but many dead birds with high dieldrin residues were species that feed largely on invertebrates. Although soil residues were low, snails and crayfish contained enough aldrin and dieldrin (average 9.5 ppm) to account for deaths in birds that fed heavily on these invertebrates over a period of time. When fulvous tree ducks were penned for 3 days in fields aerially planted with treated seed, 3 of 10 birds died with brain residues of 2.5, 2.9, and 6.8 ppm dieldrin, and others were intoxicated. None of eight died, and some gained weight, when penned in fields planted with untreated seed. This study adds further evidence for the suspected lethal effects of aldrin-treated rice seed on wild birds and other wildlife in rice field habitats.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799422","usgsCitation":"Flickinger, E.L., and King, K.A., 1972, Some effects of aldrin-treated rice on Gulf Coast wildlife: Territory boundaries often conformed to natural physical boundaries and appeared to be maintained through some nonaggressive behavior mechanism. Individual foxes traveled extensively throughout the family territory each night. Fox territories appeared to range from approximately 1 to 3 square miles in size, dependent largely on population density. Red foxes used a sequence of dens to rear their pups, and the amount and location of food remains at individual dens changed as the pups matured. The denning season was divided into pre-emergence, confined-use, and dispersed-use periods of 4 to 5 weeks each. Remains of adult waterfowl were collected at rearing dens on six townships in three ecologically different regions of eastern North Dakota. Remains of 172 adult dabbling ducks and 16 adult American coots (Fulica americana) were found at 35 dens. No remains from diving ducks were found. The number of adult ducks per den averaged 1.6, 5.9, and 10.2 for paired townships in regions with relatively low, moderate and high duck populations, respectively. Eighty-four percent of the ducks were females. The species and sex composition of ducks found at dens during early and late sampling periods reflected the nesting chronology of prairie dabbling ducks. Occupied rearing dens were focal points of red fox travel, and the locations of dens may have had considerable influence on predation. Thirty-five of 38 dens found on the six township study areas were on pastured or idle lands. The distribution of rearing dens on the Sand Lake and Arrowwood national wildlife refuges suggested that, on these areas, fox dens were concentrated because of the topography and land-use practices.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799055","usgsCitation":"Sargeant, A., 1972, Red fox spatial characteristics in relation to waterfowl predation: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 2, p. 225-236, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799055.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"225","endPage":"236","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133755,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"Anoka County, Isanti County","otherGeospatial":"Cedar Creek Natural History Area","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-93.0186,45.4131],[-93.0188,45.2984],[-93.0207,45.1258],[-93.2262,45.1255],[-93.2272,45.0373],[-93.2814,45.0374],[-93.2807,45.0498],[-93.2814,45.0539],[-93.2826,45.0584],[-93.2826,45.063],[-93.282,45.0666],[-93.282,45.0689],[-93.2813,45.0717],[-93.2794,45.0753],[-93.2781,45.0794],[-93.2787,45.0835],[-93.28,45.0867],[-93.28,45.0913],[-93.2799,45.0959],[-93.2786,45.1],[-93.2786,45.1036],[-93.2793,45.1064],[-93.2812,45.1077],[-93.2863,45.1119],[-93.2915,45.1155],[-93.2934,45.1187],[-93.2947,45.1215],[-93.296,45.1251],[-93.296,45.1274],[-93.296,45.1297],[-93.2985,45.1329],[-93.3011,45.1356],[-93.3024,45.1388],[-93.3056,45.1416],[-93.3076,45.1429],[-93.3127,45.1448],[-93.3179,45.1466],[-93.3211,45.1484],[-93.3257,45.1512],[-93.3302,45.1539],[-93.3328,45.1544],[-93.3347,45.1549],[-93.3373,45.1558],[-93.3399,45.1576],[-93.3431,45.1599],[-93.3463,45.1626],[-93.3495,45.1663],[-93.3528,45.1699],[-93.3553,45.1727],[-93.3579,45.1745],[-93.3618,45.1759],[-93.3663,45.1768],[-93.3709,45.1777],[-93.3767,45.1805],[-93.3812,45.1832],[-93.3838,45.1855],[-93.3864,45.1878],[-93.3889,45.1892],[-93.3928,45.1914],[-93.3967,45.1933],[-93.4025,45.1956],[-93.4084,45.1965],[-93.4116,45.1983],[-93.4142,45.2001],[-93.4161,45.2038],[-93.418,45.2088],[-93.4193,45.2116],[-93.4226,45.2134],[-93.4252,45.2152],[-93.4264,45.2157],[-93.4297,45.2161],[-93.4362,45.217],[-93.4426,45.2166],[-93.4472,45.2161],[-93.4517,45.2157],[-93.4543,45.2175],[-93.4575,45.2203],[-93.4614,45.2234],[-93.4653,45.2257],[-93.4698,45.2257],[-93.4763,45.2253],[-93.4821,45.2248],[-93.4847,45.2257],[-93.4879,45.2271],[-93.4912,45.2289],[-93.4964,45.2344],[-93.5022,45.239],[-93.5035,45.2399],[-93.5073,45.2417],[-93.5113,45.2431],[-93.5138,45.2454],[-93.5093,45.4163],[-93.5106,45.5598],[-93.5133,45.7335],[-93.1408,45.7312],[-93.1392,45.5602],[-93.0221,45.5576],[-93.0186,45.4131]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Anoka\",\"state\":\"MN\"}}]}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db63538a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargeant, A.B.","contributorId":13171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"A.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310863,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The system must satisfy the need for information for accounting, surveillance, and areal synthesis purposes. The network is designed by identifying specific needs in terms of maps, analyses, and studies that will provide the basic knowledge for understanding each particular phase of the groundwater system. Each specific need is then analyzed with respect to whether it will provide information on accounting, surveillance, or areal synthesis. If a particular type of map, analysis, or observation can serve any of these three functions, a network of data collection or a program of studies is outlined in detail that will provide the information needed. The method of design necessitates the establishment of accuracy levels for maps, the density of data points, confidence limits, and so forth. The information system should be under the general guidance of a single agency, but much of the work and responsibility to carry out the details of the system must be shared by a number of agencies.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR008i001p00222","usgsCitation":"Winter, T.C., 1972, An approach to the design of statewide or regional ground water information systems: Water Resources Research, v. 8, no. 1, p. 222-230, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR008i001p00222.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"222","endPage":"230","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":326402,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57ada1afe4b0f412a62dfa36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winter, Thomas C.","contributorId":84736,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winter","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":645251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The average dissolved uranium concentration and radioactivity ratio (U<sup>234</sup>/U<sup>238</sup>) of Nueces River water were determined to be 2.44 µg/1 and 1.15 respectively. Water from a tributary of the Nueces River, Cayamon Creek, was found to contain an average dissolved uranium concentration of 42.8 µg/1 with an isotopic radioactivity ratio of 1.56. Close inspection of the lateral concentration and isotopic activity ratio of uranium revealed an increase below the confluence of Cayamon Creek with the Nueces River. A model was derived based on equations used in isotopic dilution analysis, which predicts these increases within analytical error. This model may be useful in future studies to locate anomalous uranium within the hydrologic environment.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies Transactions","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies","publisherLocation":"New Orleans, LA","usgsCitation":"Holmes, C.W., and Slade, E.A., 1972, Distribution and isotopic composition of uranium in lower Nueces River, Nueces Bay and Corpus Christi Bay, Texas: Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies Transactions, v. 22, p. 315-322.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"315","endPage":"322","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":292476,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":292475,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://archives.datapages.com/data/gcags/data/022/022001/0315.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Corpus Christi Bay;Nueces Bay;Nueces River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -98.0,27.6409 ], [ -98.0,28.124 ], [ -97.0,28.124 ], [ -97.0,27.6409 ], [ -98.0,27.6409 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"22","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f31349e4b0094694f9d82b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Holmes, Charles W.","contributorId":31071,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holmes","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":498656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Slade, Elizabeth Ann","contributorId":28537,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slade","given":"Elizabeth","email":"","middleInitial":"Ann","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":498655,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Soil Conservation Service has found a total of approximately 3,500 floodwater-retarding structures to be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1970, 1,439 of these structures had been built.</p><p>This watershed-development program will have varying but important effects on the natural surface- and ground-water resources of river basins, especially where a large number of the floodwater-retarding structures are built. Basic hydrologic data under natural and developed conditions are needed to appraise the effects of the structures on the yield and mode of occurrence of runoff.</p><p>Hydrologic investigations of these small watershed study areas were begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1951 and are now being made in 12 areas (fig. 1). These investigations are being made in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, the Soil Conservation Service, the San Antonio River Authority, the city of Dallas, and the Tarrant County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In five of the study areas (North, Little Elm, Mukewater, Little Pond-North Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions 'before and after\" development. Structures have now been built in four of these study areas. A summary of the development of the floodwater-retarding structures in each study area as of September 30, 1970, is shown in table 1.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/70214098","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board and Soil Conservation Service","usgsCitation":"Hampton, B., 1972, Annual compilation and analysis of hydrologic data for Honey Creek, Trinity River Basin, Texas, 1970: Open-File Report, iv, 66 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70214098.","productDescription":"iv, 66 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393110,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70214098/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":393109,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70214098/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Honey Creek, Trinity River Basin","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hampton, B.B.","contributorId":43362,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hampton","given":"B.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":828720,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
