Results for the U.S. Geological Survey standard rocks are presented. Rocks and minerals are dissolved in hydrofluoric-perchloric acid in the presence of 207Bi tracer and the silica is removed by evaporation. The perchloric acid residue is taken up in water and bismuth iodide is extracted into methyl isobutyl ketone. After three acid-iodide washes, the bismuth is stripped into water and reacted with a substoichiometric amount of EDTA. Packer seats were poor in part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions. Thus, some zones had to be tested several times. The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from about 23 meters (71 feet) below land surface in the upper interval to an estimated 90 meters (295 feet) below land surface in the lower intervals, indicating a decreasing head with depth. The specific capacity of the hole from 85. 0 to 2,133. 6 meters (279 to 7,000 feet) was 1.94 cubic meters per day per meter (0. 11 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown after the hole had been jetted at an average rate of 327 cubic meters per day (60 gallons per minute) for about 23 hours . Transmissivity computed from the recovery of water level after jetting stopped was 0.60 cubic meter per day per meter (48.3 gallons per day per foot). The ultimate consequence has been a reduction of fishery productivity that has ranged from extreme in Lake Ontario to moderate in Lake Superior. If measures are not taken to alleviate the adverse effects of marine invaders and trends in environmental quality, a major reduction in fishery productivity can eventually be expected throughout the Great Lakes.Prospects for the next century will be improved if the lakes can be intensively managed. More stringent control of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), and subsequent reduction of the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), by the reestablishment of populations of large piscivores, should permit the recovery of some of the previous predator and prey species, or the development of populations of new species that are more compatible with a reduced number of lampreys. Even if marine species can be reduced greatly, the full restoration of the former fishery productivity remains uncertain and will require a high degree of coordination among all management and research agencies that have responsibilities on the Great Lakes.Unfavorable trends toward progressive degradation of water quality pose the greatest threat to restoration of the fishery resources of the Great Lakes. Data included in this report were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of the following district chiefs: H.K. Hall, Idaho; George M. Pike, Montana; S.F. Kapustka, Oregon; and L.B. Laird, Washington.

The Geological Survey has published records of chemical quality, water temperatures, and sediment since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" Beginning with the 1964 water year, water-quality records have been published by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are available from the district offices.

This report is for limited distribution and is intended primarily for rapid release of selected data shortly after the end of the water year. Data contained herein is provisional and subject to revision before final publication in the foregoing reports. The flood releases from Camanche Reservoir are to be restricted, insofar as possible, so that the flows in the Mokelumne River will not exceed 5,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) as measured at the gaging station below Camanche Dam.
\n
\n
Areas of inundation and computed floodwater profiles are based on channel conditions in late 1970 and on observed water-surface profiles during flood releases of about 5,000 cfs in January 1969 and January 1970. The inundated area shown on the maps (appendix A) and the water-surface elevations indicated on the cross sections (appendix G) are for the flood releases of those dates.
\n
\n
The following conclusions are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow and no significant channel changes since the flood release of January 1970.
\n
\n
1. High tides in San Francisco Bay and, to a greater degree, flood stages on the Cosumnes River, cause backwater in the study reach. Severe backwater conditions occurring simultaneously with a flow of 5,000 cfs in the Mokelumne River can increase the flood stage 4 to 6 feet at Bensons Ferry Bridge (cross section 1). Backwater effects decrease in an upstream direction and are less than 0.5 foot at cross section 35, a river distance of 8.6 miles upstream from cross section 1, and 1.5 miles downstream from the Peltier Road bridge.
\n
\n
2. In the reach between cross sections 1 and 35, a 5,000 cfs release from Camanche Reservoir with maximum backwater effect (measured at cross section 1 at the mouth of the Cosumnes River) is confined within the natural or leveed banks except on the right bank flood plain between cross sections 12 and 19.
\n
\n
3. Upstream from cross section 35, there is overbank flooding at a flow of 5,000 cfs between cross sections 48 and 51, and 62 and 67.5. An increase in flow from 5,000 to 6,000 cfs will cause flooding between cross sections 43 and 47, 52 and 56, and 73 and 85.
\n
\n
4. A discharge of 5,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the study reach except that of the Western Pacific Railroad Co. bridge at cross section 4. If large amounts of debris lodge on the railroad bridge when backwater from the Cosumnes River occurs, the debris could cause higher stages and flooding along the right bank between cross sections 5 and 12.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey Water Resources Division","publisherLocation":"Menlo Park, CA","doi":"10.3133/70048669","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with The Reclamation Board, State of California","usgsCitation":"Simpson, R., 1972, Determination of channel capacity of the Mokelumne River downstream from Camanche Dam, San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report, iv, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70048669.","productDescription":"iv, 64 p.","numberOfPages":"68","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278502,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70048669.jpg"},{"id":279571,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70048669/report.pdf"}],"scale":"500000","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Sacramento County;San Joaquin County","otherGeospatial":"Camanche Reservoir;Mokelumne River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -121.765,38.0579 ], [ -121.765,38.7007 ], [ -120.816,38.7007 ], [ -120.816,38.0579 ], [ -121.765,38.0579 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5270d903e4b0f7a10664fba4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Simpson, R.G.","contributorId":16016,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simpson","given":"R.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":485363,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Reports in this series are prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources and are designed to provide data to enable interested parties such as legislators, administrators, and planners to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.

This report, like the others (see references, p. 21), contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. It also contains supplementary data that are related to ground-water use in some areas. In reports of this series, the inclusion of such supplementary data as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration is intended only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.

The report includes individual discussions of the most important areas of ground-water withdrawal in the State for the calendar year 1970. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1970 to spring 1971. Many of the data used in the report were collected by the Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Water Rights, Utah Department of Natural Resources.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Utah","usgsCitation":"Cordova, R., Bjorklund, L., McGreevy, L.J., Bolke, E., Sumison, C., Herbert, L.R., Butler, R., Mower, R.W., Sandberg, G.W., and Adams, D.B., 1971, Developing a state water plan: Ground-water conditions in Utah, spring of 1971: Cooperative Investigations Report 9, viii, 72 p.","productDescription":"viii, 72 p.","numberOfPages":"80","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333680,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333679,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=50-1-194"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58863a13e4b0cad700058b63","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cordova, R.M.","contributorId":77511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordova","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bjorklund, L.J.","contributorId":14035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bjorklund","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":659724,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McGreevy, L. Most major springs having discharge of several cubic feet per second or more are in or near mountain ranges or plateaus where precipitation is much greater than in other parts of the State. The largest instantaneous discharge observed at any spring was 314 cfs at Mammoth Spring in southwestern Utah. Discharges exceeding 200 cfs have been observed at Swan Creek Spring in extreme northern Utah, and discharges of 200 cfs have been reported for Big Brush Creek Spring in northeastern Utah. Maximum discharges generally are during or within a few weeks after the main period of snowmelt, which is usually from late April to the middle of June.

The largest springs generally discharge form or very near carbonate rocks in which solution channels and fractures are numerous or from areas of porous or fractured volcanic rocks. Most nonthermal springs in Utah probably are variable springs – that is, their variability of discharge exceeds 100 percent.

Most of the major springs discharge water that contains less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of dissolved solids, and most of the water is of the calcium bicarbonate type. The report is primarily about the ground water in the valley, but it also includes a discussion of the relation of ground water to surface water and presents a general water-budget analysis for the valley. The report discusses the effects of climate, geology, and development on the source, occurrence, availability, quantity, movement, and chemical quality of the ground water. Most of the discussion pertains to ground water in the Quaternary valley fill, the principal water-bearing unit in the area, but it also includes some information about ground water in other rocks within the Cache Valley drainage basin.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","usgsCitation":"Bjorklund, L., and McGreevy, L.J., 1971, Ground-water resources of Cache Valley, Utah and Idaho: Technical Publication 36, iv, 72 p.","productDescription":"iv, 72 p.","numberOfPages":"85","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":331838,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=20-4-770"},{"id":331839,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://waterrights.utah.gov/docSys/v920/w920/w920008y.pdf"},{"id":331840,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Cache Valley","geographicExtents":" {\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -111.74468994140625,\n 41.875696393231\n ],\n [\n -111.67327880859375,\n 42.0227732629691\n ],\n [\n -111.741943359375,\n 42.165439250064345\n ],\n [\n -111.7584228515625,\n 42.25088477477567\n ],\n [\n -111.895751953125,\n 42.28340504748081\n ],\n [\n -111.98089599609375,\n 42.34636533160187\n ],\n [\n -112.06329345703125,\n 42.370720143531976\n ],\n [\n -112.08251953125,\n 42.238685347536496\n ],\n [\n -112.05780029296875,\n 42.15322331239858\n ],\n [\n -112.1044921875,\n 42.08803181932636\n ],\n [\n -112.12921142578125,\n 42.00032514831621\n ],\n [\n -112.12371826171875,\n 41.920672548686824\n ],\n [\n -112.027587890625,\n 41.79384042311992\n ],\n [\n -112.027587890625,\n 41.71187978193456\n ],\n [\n -111.91497802734375,\n 41.53325414281322\n ],\n [\n -111.76391601562499,\n 41.422134246213616\n ],\n [\n -111.71722412109374,\n 41.6010669423553\n ],\n [\n -111.74468994140625,\n 41.69957665997156\n ],\n [\n -111.7144775390625,\n 41.78360106648078\n ],\n [\n -111.74468994140625,\n 41.875696393231\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"584bd0e2e4b077fc20250e2c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bjorklund, L.J.","contributorId":14035,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bjorklund","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":655419,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McGreevy, L. An average annual hydrologic budget was computed for Cumberland County. Water gains are: precipitation, 1,050 mgd (million gallons per day); surface-water inflow, 142 mgd; ground-water inflow negligible. Water losses are: evapotranspiration, 685 mgd; surface-water outflow, 370 mgd; ground-water outflow, 137 mgd.
\n
Unconsolidated and semiconsolidated Coastal Plain sediments, 2,500 to 4,500 feet thick, and ranging in age from Cretaceous to Holocene, consist of layers of clay, silt, sand and gravel. Aquifers composed mainly of sand and gravel occur in the Potomac Group and Raritan and Magothy Formations, the Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand, the Piney Point Formation, and the Kirkwood Formation and Cohansey Sand.
\n
Aquifers in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy sequence contain saline water and are not currently utilized in Cumberland County. However, they may be utilized in the future for underground storage of fresh water, or possibly other uses when more is known about this aquifer system.
\n
The aquifer in the Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand is not presently utilized in Cumberland County. It is probably suitable for future development, however of wells yielding as much as 300 gpm (gallons per minute) of good quality water in the northern part of the county.
\n
The Piney Point Formation is tapped in Cumberland County by only a few wells; each of these generally yield less than 100 gpm. Additional small supplies can be developed from this aquifer. Water from this aquifer requires little or no treatment for domestic use.
\n
Two principal aquifers occur in the Kirkwood Formation and Cohansey Sand: (1) the lower Kirkwood aquifer and (2) the Cohansey-Kirkwood aquifer. Most wells tapping the lower Kirkwood aquifer yield less than 50 gpm but are capable of yielding as much as 400 gpm. Wells in the lower Kirkwood range in depth from 200 to 370 feet. The Cohansey-Kirkwood aquifer is the shallowest and most important source of ground-water in the county but is highly susceptible to surface contamination. This aquifer is highly permeable; analysis of data from two pumping tests indicates permeabilities of 1,200 and 2,700 gpm per square foot. It generally yields large supplies of water (300 to 1,200 gpm) to wells from depths of less than 180 feet. Water in the Cohansey-Kirkwood aquifer is characterized by 1mv dissolved-solids content (63 mg/l, median), low hardness (21 mg/l, median), and low pH values (5.5 pH units, median).
\n
Water use in Cumberland County varies and is highly seasonal, mainly because of increasing requirements for irrigation and the food processing industries in the county. In 1964 seasonal use ranged from 27 mgd in March to 145 mgd in August. This is much higher than withdrawals in neighboring Salem and Cape May Counties. In 1964 withdrawals in Cumberland County averaged about 51 mgd; almost all of this, 49.4 mgd, was from ground-water supplies. The total annual water use in 1964 according to type of use was: for public supply, 10.6 mgd; for industrial uses, 19.0 mgd; irrigation, 15.4 mgd; suburban, rural, residential, institutional, farm, and commercial, 5.9 mgd.
","language":"English","publisher":"New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Rooney, J.G., 1971, Ground-water resources: Cumberland County, New Jersey: Special Report 34, vi, 65 p.","productDescription":"vi, 65 p.","numberOfPages":"112","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277134,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047885.jpg"},{"id":311352,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047885/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Cumberland County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74.9322509765625,\n              39.191819549771694\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.937744140625,\n              39.296048244024085\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.90203857421875,\n              39.37677199661635\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.893798828125,\n              39.50827899034111\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.96520996093749,\n              39.57182223734374\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.07507324218749,\n              39.605688178320804\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.20690917968749,\n              39.63530729658598\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.30029296875,\n              39.6437675734185\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.3607177734375,\n              39.63530729658598\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.399169921875,\n              39.63530729658598\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.47607421875,\n              39.55911824217184\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.5364990234375,\n              39.48284540453334\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.5419921875,\n              39.46164364205549\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.487060546875,\n              39.431950321168635\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.44860839843749,\n              39.38526381099774\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.38818359375,\n              39.34704251121735\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.333251953125,\n              39.32579941789298\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.25634765625,\n              39.26203141523749\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1959228515625,\n              39.20246222588235\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.146484375,\n              39.16414104768742\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.07507324218749,\n              39.198205348894795\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.9322509765625,\n              39.191819549771694\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"521f1be7e4b0f8bf2b07611a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rooney, James G.","contributorId":105628,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rooney","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483221,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
