The oldest formation exposed in the area is the relatively thick and impermeable Bearpaw Shale of Cretaceous .age. Overlying the Bearpaw Shale in succession are the Fox Hills Sandstone and Hell Creek Formation of Cretaceous age, the Fort Union Formation of Tertiary age, and thin glacial deposits .and alluvium of Quaternary age. All but the Bearpaw Shale and the glacial deposits are potential aquifers. Published geologic maps were found to be satisfactory after fitting contacts to the topographic base. Mapping, therefore, was limited mainly to outlining on aerial photographs the alluvial deposits in the stream valleys. \r\n\r\nThe major structural feature is the Blood Creek syncline, the axis of which plunges eastward 10-15 feet per mile across the southern part of the area. Beds generally dip 15-25 feet per mile toward the synclinal axis. Water in bedrock aquifers is under artesian pressure, .and most wells in Big and Little Dry Creek valleys flow at the land surface. \r\n\r\nThe only bedrock aquifer having appreciable areal extent is a sandstone 30-70 feet thick that has been mapped by previous investigators as the upper part of the Fox Hills Sandstone. This aquifer crops out in the northern and northwestern parts of the area and dips about 20 feet per mile southeastward beneath younger beds. Most wells in the northern half of the area obtain water from this sandstone at drilling depths of less than 200 feet. \r\n\r\nThe depth to the Fox Hills Sandstone increases progressively southward, and most wells south of Woody Creek obtain water from irregularly distributed sandstone beds and lenses in the overlying Hell Creek and Fort Union Formations. The depth at which water may be obtained from these beds is not accurately predictable, but the depth seldom exceeds 300 feet. \r\n\r\nThe results of the investigation indicate that the prospects for obtaining ample water for livestock from wells drilled into the bedrock formations are very favorable in most of the area. The average depth of bedrock wells in the area is 195 feet. \r\n\r\nUnderflow in the alluvial deposits along all the larger stream valleys also affords a practical source of stock water. \r\n\r\nChemical analyses of samples collected at 43 wells and three springs show the water quality to be generally poor. Water from bedrock aquifer contains 530-5,340 milligrams per liter total dissolved solids, whereas water from alluvium contains less than 1,500 milligrams per liter total dissolved solids. The predominant constituents are sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate. So far as could be determined, all water supplies in the area are suitable for livestock.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1999F","usgsCitation":"Van Lewen, M.C., and King, N.J., 1971, Prospects for developing stock - Water supplies from wells in northeastern Garfield County, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1999, Report; iv, 38 p.; 1 Plate: 22.00 × 33.60 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1999F.","productDescription":"Report; iv, 38 p.; 1 Plate: 22.00 × 33.60 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410017,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25490.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":29440,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999f/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":29439,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999f/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139068,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999f/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","county":"Garfield County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -106.17,\n 47.941\n ],\n [\n -107.012,\n 47.941\n ],\n [\n -107.012,\n 47.151\n ],\n [\n -106.17,\n 47.151\n ],\n [\n -106.17,\n 47.941\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a92e4b07f02db657bdb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Lewen, M. Extensive soil conservation treatments were applied in the 12.2-squaremile Corey Creek basin, but only minor treatments were applied in the adjacent 10.2-square-mile Elk Run basin. These treatments included the construction of ponds and diversion terraces and altering land use by such measures as establishing permanent hay land and changing marginal pasture land to wood lands. Elk Run basin, which is topographically and hydrologically similar to the Corey Creek basin, was used as an external control to assist in detecting and evaluating the hydrologic changes in Corey Creek. Trend analyses of data from both basins indicate a 47-percent decrease in sediment discharge from Corey Creek during the frequent storms that occur in the May to October growing season. Six percent of the sediment discharged from Corey Creek during the period of this investigation (1954-67) was discharged during these frequent growing-season storms. The remaining 94 percent of the sediment was discharged during the November to April dormant season and during two major events during the growing season, one October 1955 and one May 1961. No decrease in sediment discharge was observed for these events or for this period. The adjacent basin of similar size, topography, and hydrologic characteristics, Elk Run, was not scheduled for extensive conservation treatment; it was selected as a control for this study \"because of the assumption that any changes in precipitation and runoff patterns would affect both basins in a similar manner. Rainfall, runoff, sediment, and stream-channel data are used in this report to estimate the probable hydrologic behavior of the Corey Creek basin provided the intensive conservation program had not been undertaken.~
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1532E","usgsCitation":"Reed, L.A., 1971, Hydrology and sedimentation of Corey Creek and Elk Run basins, north-central Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1532, iv, 27 p. :illus., map. ;23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1532E.","productDescription":"iv, 27 p. :illus., map. ;23 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":138149,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1532e/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28853,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1532e/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e85f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reed, Lloyd A.","contributorId":79861,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reed","given":"Lloyd","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145429,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Mojave Water Agency is responsible for providing sufficient water of good quality for the full economic development of the area. The U.S. Geological Survey suggested an electric analog model of the basin as a predictive tool to aid management. \r\n\r\nAbout 1,375 square miles of the alluvial basin was simulated by a passive resistor-capacitor network. The Mojave River, the main source of recharge, was simulated by subdividing the river into 13 reaches, depending on intermittent or perennial flow and on phreatophytes. The water loss to the aquifer was based on records at five gaging stations. The aquifer system depends on river recharge to maintain the water table as most of the ground-water pumping and development is adjacent to the river. \r\n\r\nThe accuracy and reliability of the model was assessed by comparing the water-level changes computed by the model for the period 1930-63 with the changes determined from field data for the same period.\r\n\r\nThe model was used to predict the effects on the physical system by determining basin-wide water-level changes from 1930-2000 under different pumping rates and extremes in flow of the Mojave River. Future pumping was based on the 1960-63 rate, on an increase of 20 percent from this rate, and on population projections to 2000 in the Barstow area. For future predictions, the Mojave River was modeled as average flow based on 1931-65 records and also as high flow, 1937-46, and low flow, 1947-65. \r\n\r\nOther model runs included water-level change 1930-63 assuming aquifer depletion only and no recharge, effects of a well field pumping 10,000 acre-feet in 4 months north of Victorville and southeast of Yermo, and effects of importing 10,000, 35,000, and 50,800 acre-feet of water per year from the California Water Project into the Mojave River for conveyance downstream.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S.G.S.,","doi":"10.3133/ofr72157","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hardt, W.F., 1971, Hydrologic analysis of Mojave River Basin, California, using electric analog model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-157, 84 p. :ill., charts, graphs, map [folded in pocket] ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72157.","productDescription":"84 p. :ill., charts, graphs, map [folded in pocket] ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156075,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52579,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52580,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52581,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52582,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52583,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0157/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db684229","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hardt, W. It has been in a eutrophic state for at least 350 years, and the geochemically derived dissolved materials entering the lake from the drainage basin are of sufficient quantity (449,700 tones per year) to support annual algal blooms. The greatest amount of the dissolved materials (72 percent) comes from the southern tributaries to the lake, of which Chittenango Creek carries the largest load of almost all major chemical substances. The stream contributes 37 percent of all dissolved solids entering the lake. The Tulare Formation of Pliocene and Pleistocene age, terrace deposits of Pleistocene age, and alluvium and flood-basin deposits of Pleistocene and Holocene age constitute the fresh ground-water reservoir Pre-Tertiary and Tertiary sedimentary and crystalline rocks, undifferentiated, underlie the valley and yield saline water.

Hydrologically most important, the Tulare Formation is divided into a lower water-bearing zone confined by the Corcoran Clay Member and an upper zone that is confined, semiconfined, and unconfined in different parts of the area. Alluvium and flood-basin deposits are included in the upper zone. Surficial alluvium and flood-basin deposits contain a shallow water-bearing zone. Lower zone wells were flowing in 1908, but subsequent irrigation development caused head declines and land subsidence. Overdraft in both zones ended in 1951 with import of surface water.

Bicarbonate water flows into the area from the Sierra Nevada and Diablo Range. Diablo Range water is higher in sulfate, chloride, and dissolved solids. Upper zone water averages between 400 and 1,200 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids and water hardness generally exceeds 180 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Nitrate, fluoride, iron, and boron occur in excessive concentrations in water from some wells. Dissolved constituents in lower zone water generally are sodium chloride and sodium sulfate with higher dissolved solids concentration than water from the upper zone.

The foothills of the Diablo Range provide favorable conditions for artificial recharge, but shallow water problems plague about 50 percent of the area and artificial recharge is undesirable at this time.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr72169","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hotchkiss, W.R., and Balding, G., 1971, Geology, hydrology, and water quality of the Tracy-Dos Palos area, San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-169, Report: viii, 107 p.; 3 Plates: 33.24 x 31.14 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72169.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 107 p.; 3 Plates: 33.24 x 31.14 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156308,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0169/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52697,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0169/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52698,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0169/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52699,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0169/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52700,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0169/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c64e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hotchkiss, W. The rapid growth of this area has resulted in an increase in ground-water withdrawals such that in 1968 about 67.5 million gallons per day was pumped to satisfy the demands of municipal, irrigation and industrial users.\n\nDeclines of water-levels of as much as 30 feet in the area cause pumps to lose suction and increase the hazard of upward migration of saline water. However, no widespread deterioration of water quality has been noted to date.\n\nConsiderable hydrologic data are available for the Lakeland ridge area. However, in order to give water managers a proper base for decisions that would allow for optimum utilization of the groundwater resources, more detailed data are needed about the hydraulic In order to make intelligent decisions regarding use and management of the water resource for recreation and other demands, an analysis of the hydrologic factors related to recreational values is essential.

The Pere Marquette, an outstanding river for brown and steelhead trout fishing, is also a popular canoe trail. Larger boats, some equipped with motors, are common in the lower reaches where the river is wide and deep. Cabins are abundant on the river near Baldwin but are relatively sparse elsewhere. The broad swampy floodplain that borders most of the river between Walhalla and Ludington apparently offers few favorable cabin sites.

The Pere Marquette is located in the west-central part of the Southern Peninsula of Michigan, and flows westward from the headwaters near Chase in Lake County to the mouth at Ludington, in Mason County. The river is south of, and roughly parallel to, U.S. Highway 10 from Chase to Ludington. Access to the river is by roads leading south from U.S. 10 at Nirvana, Idlewild, Baldwin, Branch, Walhalla, Scottville, and many intermediate points.

The recreational value of the river depends on the streamflow characteristics, quality of water, and character of stream channel and bed and banks.
