A total of 57 transect lines or cross sections were established within three study reaches located along the middle channel of the Platte River in a 2,650-acre parcel of land owned by the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), hereinafter referred to as the Cottonwood Ranch Property. Five additional cross sections were established downstream of the Cottonwood Ranch Property across the entire width of the Platte River as a component of a proposed future general monitoring program. A development and enhancement plan is proposed by NPPD on the Cottonwood Ranch Property to satisfy their Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing guidelines. The goal of the plan is to improve habitat along this reach for endangered species. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) designed a monitoring and research program to study and detect what effects, if any, these channel management actions have on channel morphology and sediment transport within and adjacent to the Cottonwood Ranch Property. Especially important is the potential for the exchange of ground water and surface water within these features. The hydrostratigraphic results from this study document the lithologic nature of the foundation of the tree islands, the distribution of porous intervals, the potential for paleotopographic influence on their formation, and the importance of low-permeability, subaerial-exposure horizons on the vertical exchange of ground water and surface water. \r\n\r\n\r\n \r\nFigure 1. Location of Tree Islands 3AS3 and 3BS1. [larger image] \r\nResults from this hydrostratigraphic study indicate that subtle differences occur in lithofacies and topography between the on-island and off-island subsurface geologic records. Specifics are described herein. Firstly, at both tree-island sites, the top of the limestone bedrock is slightly elevated beneath the head of the tree islands relative to the off-island core sites and the tail of the tree islands, which suggests that bedrock 'highs' acted as 'seeds' for the development of the tree islands of this study and possibly many others. Secondly, examination of the recovered core and the caliper logs tentatively suggest that the elevated limestone beneath the tree islands may have a preferentially more porous framework relative to limestone beneath the adjacent areas, possibly providing a ground-water-to-surface-water connection that sustains the tree island system. Finally, because the elevation of the top of the limestone bedrock at the head of Tree Island 3AS3 is slightly higher than the surrounding upper surface of the peat, and because the wetland peats have a lower hydraulic conductivity than the limestone bedrock (Miami Limestone and Fort Thompson Formation), it is possible that there is a head difference between surface water of the wetlands and the ground water in underlying limestone bedrock.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr0368","usgsCitation":"Hydrostratigraphy of Tree Island Cores from Water Conservation Area 3; 2003; OFR; 2003-68; McNeill, Donald F.; Cunningham, Kevin J.","productDescription":"130 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":179088,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0068/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":4502,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0068/ofr03-68.pdf","text":"Report","size":"8.29 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 03-68"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Water Conservation Area 3","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.87148626491134,\n              25.85968346269803\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.87148626491133,\n              25.70\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.48039655724416,\n              25.70\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.48382716871531,\n              25.86277066079785\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.87148626491134,\n              25.85968346269803\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","publishedDate":"2003-10-01","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-10-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc6d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McNeill, Donald F.","contributorId":56511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McNeill","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":244526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cunningham, Kevin J. 0000-0002-2179-8686 kcunning@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2179-8686","contributorId":1689,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cunningham","given":"Kevin","email":"kcunning@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":269,"text":"FLWSC-Ft. To increase our knowledge about the origins of these features, sediment cores were collected on and around tree islands. These cores were dated using radioisotopic techniques, including carbon-14 dating, which provides reliable dates from ~40,000 to ~300 years ago, and lead-210 dating, which provides age models for the last century. These age models were paired with vegetational reconstruction based on pollen analysis from cores to identify the timing of tree-island formation and assess past tree-island response to hydrologic changes in the 20th century.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr0326","usgsCitation":"Tree Islands of the Florida Everglades - A Disappearing Resource; 2003; OFR; 2003-26; Geological Survey (U.S.)","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":173857,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0026/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":4867,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0026/ofr03-26.pdf","text":"Report","size":"14.4 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2003-0026"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.21989956095884,\n              26.52881121594524\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.18597868368488,\n              26.52881121594524\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.18597868368488,\n              25.150575418214927\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.21989956095884,\n              25.150575418214927\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.21989956095884,\n              26.52881121594524\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","publishedDate":"2003-01-03","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-01-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e9e4b07f02db5e94c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":532213,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The model uses a semi-implicit, semi-Lagrangian finite-difference method. It is a variant of the Trim model and has been used successfully in estuarine environments such as San Francisco Bay. The abilities of the model are documented for three scenarios: uniform depth flows, laboratory dam-break flows, and large-scale riverine flows. The model can start computations from a ?dry? bed and converge to accurate solutions. Inflows are expressed as source terms, which limits the use of the model to sufficiently long reaches where the flow reaches equilibrium with the channel. The data sets used by the investigation demonstrate that the model accurately propagates flood waves through long river reaches and simulates dam breaks with abrupt water-surface changes.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03371","usgsCitation":"Fulford, J.M., 2003, Computational technique and performance of Transient Inundation Model for Rivers--2 Dimensional (TRIM2RD) : a depth-averaged two-dimensional flow model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-371, 51 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03371.","productDescription":"51 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177560,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":5195,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr03371/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7c26","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fulford, Janice M. jfulford@usgs.gov","contributorId":991,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fulford","given":"Janice","email":"jfulford@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":502,"text":"Office of Surface Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":246433,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Alexander and others (1999) developed ERF1, which assessed the hydrologic integrity of the digital reach traces and calculated the mean water time-of-travel in river reaches and reservoirs.  ERF1_2 serves as the foundation for SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions (of nutrient transport) on Watershed) modeling.  Within the context of a Geographic Information System, SPARROW estimates the proportion of watersheds in the conterminous U.S. with outflow concentrations of several nutrients, including total nitrogen and total phosphorus, (Smith, R.A., Schwarz, G.E., and Alexander, R.B., 1997).  This version of the network expands on ERF1 (Version 1.2; Alexander, et al., 1999) and includes the incremental and total drainage area derived from 1-kilometer (km) elevation data for North America.  Previous estimates of the water time-of-travel were recomputed for reaches with water-quality monitoring sites that included two reaches.  The mean flow and velocity estimates for these split reaches are based on previous estimation methods (Alexander et al., 1999) and are unchanged in ERF1_2.  Drainage area calculations provide data used to estimate the contribution of a given nutrient to the outflow.  Data estimates depend on the accuracy of node connectivity.  Reaches split at water-quality or pesticide-monitoring sites indicate the source point for estimating the contribution and transport of nutrients and their loads throughout the watersheds.  The ERF1_2 coverage extends the earlier drainage area founded on the 1-kilometer data for North America (Verdin, 1996; Verdin and Jenson, 1996).  A 1-kilometer raster grid of ERF1_2 projected to Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area, NAD 27 Datum (Snyder, 1987), was merged with the HYDRO1K flow direction data set (Verdin and Jenson, 1996) to generate a DEM-based watershed grid, ERF1_2WS_LG.  The watershed boundaries are maintained in a raster (grid cell) format as well as a vector (polygon) format for subsequent model analysis.  Both the coverage, ERF1_2, and the grid, ERF1_2WS_LG, are available at:  URL:http://water.usgs.gov/lookup/getspatial?erf1_2","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0240","usgsCitation":"Nolan, J.V., Brakebill, J.W., Alexander, R.B., and Schwarz, G., 2003, ERF1_2 -- Enhanced River Reach File 2.0 (Version 2.0, November 10, 2003): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-40, Dataset, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0240.","productDescription":"Dataset","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":175238,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":5267,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/XML/erf1_2.xml"}],"edition":"Version 2.0, November 10, 2003","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62c32a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nolan, Jacqueline V.","contributorId":97185,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nolan","given":"Jacqueline","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":247614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brakebill, John W. 0000-0001-9235-6810 jwbrakeb@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9235-6810","contributorId":1061,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brakebill","given":"John","email":"jwbrakeb@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247613,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Alexander, Richard B. 0000-0001-9166-0626 ralex@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9166-0626","contributorId":541,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Alexander","given":"Richard","email":"ralex@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":503,"text":"Office of Water Quality","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Schwarz, Gregory E. 0000-0002-9239-4566 gschwarz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9239-4566","contributorId":543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schwarz","given":"Gregory E.","email":"gschwarz@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5067,"text":"Northeast Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":247612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These\nprovinces were identified and defined in the USGS Water Resource\nInvestigation Report (WRIR) 03-4166 (Belitz and others, 2003) titled,\n'Framework for a Ground-water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Plan for\nCalifornia'. Hydrogeologic provinces are generalized areas where hydrology\nand/or geology have similar characteristics.  The Southern Cal Islands\ngroup was not previously defined as a province in WRIR 03-4166, and is\ntherefore identified as a group in this dataset.\n\nThese provinces were created by grouping polygons from two formally created\ndigital data sets into respective provinces. New polygons were created\nwhere necessary. The two digital data set sources consisted of watershed\npolygons (calwater) and groundwater basin polygons (gw_basins) compiled to\ncreate an original publication of hydrogeologic province boundaries in the\nform of a region-class within the data set.  By symbolizing on the region-\nclass, the user can view the ten hydrogeologic provinces and one grouped\nprovince in their simplest representation, without watershed and ground-\nwater basin boundaries obscuring the province areas.\n\nOriginal polygons for both the watershed data set and the ground-water basin\ndata set were retained as much as possible.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr03470","usgsCitation":"Johnson, T.D., and Belitz, K., 2003, Hydrogeologic Provinces for California based upon established groundwater basins and watershed polygons (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-470, map, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03470.","productDescription":"map","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177324,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4928,"rank":800,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/XML/ca_provinces.xml"}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a50e4b07f02db628d72","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, Tyler D. 0000-0002-7334-9188 tyjohns@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7334-9188","contributorId":1440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Tyler","email":"tyjohns@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":247053,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Belitz, Kenneth 0000-0003-4481-2345 kbelitz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4481-2345","contributorId":442,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Belitz","given":"Kenneth","email":"kbelitz@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":27111,"text":"National Water Quality Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":376,"text":"Massachusetts Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":503,"text":"Office of Water Quality","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247052,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

From November 2001 to April 2002, over 280 sturgeon of the genus Scaphirhynchus (including pallid sturgeon, shovelnose, and their hybrids) were sampled from the outflow channel of the Old River Control Structure Complex (ORCC) in Concordia Parish, La. In the overall project, several datasets were collected (see Appendix), including species identification by using microsatellites and morphometric characters, food habits, physical anomalies, information on blood cells, and pathologic evidence of iridovirus – the first indication in the lower Mississippi population of pallid sturgeon. In this study, data on blood cells were obtained from the sturgeon collected monthly from approximately 20 different animals at each sampling time. </p><p>This report presents preliminary information on differential blood cell identifications in sturgeon, data on comparative genomic DNA content and DNA degradation, and summaries and interpretations of data collected in light of available scientific literature addressing blood parameters of fish and sturgeon, in particular. Results obtained from collection and examination of blood and body fluids are often essential in establishing the health of fish (Blaxhall, 1972; Fange, 1992). Blood cells and sperm cells can be obtained nondestructively from fishes, even from small specimens that weigh less than 100 g (Stoskopf, 1992a). For flow cytometry assays, whereby cells are analyzed individually in a fluid stream, less than 1 :L of blood is needed. Examinations of blood by microscopy and flow cytometry were performed at NWRC in assisting in the efforts directed at recovery of the pallid sturgeon population in the Lower Mississippi River Basin. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03406","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Southeast Region, Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery, Natchitoches, Louisiana","usgsCitation":"Jenkins, J.A., 2003, Pallid sturgeon in the Lower Mississippi Region: Hematology and genome information: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 03-406, iv, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03406.","productDescription":"iv, 32 p.","numberOfPages":"37","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":354893,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0406/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":354894,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0406/ofr2003406.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.46 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"ofr 2003–406"}],"contact":"<p>Director,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/wetland-and-aquatic-research-center-warc/\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/wetland-and-aquatic-research-center-warc/\">Wetland and Aquatic Research Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>700 Cajundome Blvd.<br>Lafayette, LA 70506</p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Preface<br></li><li>Introduction<br></li><li>Materials and Methods<br></li><li>Results<br></li><li>Discussion<br></li><li>Acknowledgments<br></li><li>References Cited<br></li><li>Appendix<br></li></ul>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689ad3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jenkins, Jill A. 0000-0002-5087-0894 jenkinsj@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5087-0894","contributorId":2710,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jenkins","given":"Jill","email":"jenkinsj@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":247080,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Dr. Janice C. Beatley established the plots in 1962 and then remeasured them periodically from 1963 through 1975. We remeasured 67 of these plots between 2000 and 2003; the remaining plot was destroyed at some time between 1975 and 1993. The plots ranged from 935 to 2,274 m in elevation and are representative of common plant associations of the Mojave Desert, the transition to Great Basin Desert, and pinyon-juniper woodlands. The purpose of this report is to describe the complete set of ecological data that Beatley collected from the Nevada Test Site from 1963 through 1975 and to present the data for perennial vegetation collected from 2000 through 2003.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr03336","usgsCitation":"Webb, R., Murov, M.B., Esque, T., Boyer, D.E., DeFalco, L., Haines, D.F., Oldershaw, D., Scoles, S.J., Thomas, K.A., Blainey, J.B., and Medica, P.A., 2003, Perennial vegetation data from permanent plots on the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2003-336, ii, 251 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr03336.","productDescription":"ii, 251 p.","numberOfPages":"257","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":177925,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0336/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":4974,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2003/0336/ofr03336.pdf","text":"Report","size":"50.8 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2003-336"}],"contact":"<p>Director, <a href=\"https://www.werc.usgs.gov/\" target=\"blank\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.werc.usgs.gov/\">Western Ecological Research Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3020 State University Drive East<br>Sacramento, California 95819</p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Abstract<br></li><li>Introduction<br></li><li>The Legacy of Dr. Janice C. The dataset was created by multiplying a grid of base-flow index (BFI) values by a grid of mean annual runoff values derived from a 1951-80 mean annual runoff contour map. Mean annual runoff is long-term average streamflow expressed on a per-unit-area basis.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, The assessment is intended to improve understanding of spatial and temporal variability of aquatic habitat, including habitats thought to be critical for the endangered pallid sturgeon (<i>Scaphirhynchus albus</i>). Physical aquatic habitat – depth, velocity, and substrate – was assessed around 9 wing dikes and adjacent to the U.S. Route 19 bridge, at discharges varying from 44,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 146, 000 cfs during August 2000 – May, 2001. For the river as a whole, velocities are bi-modally distributed with distinct peaks relating to navigation channel and wing-dike environments. Velocities predictably showed an increasing trend with increasing discharge. Substrate within wing dikes was dominated by mud at low discharges, whereas the navigation channel had patches of transporting sand, rippled sand, and coarse sand. Discharges that overtopped the wing dikes (about 93,000 cfs, March 2001) were associated with increases of patchy sand, rippled sand, and coarse sand within the wing dikes. When flows were substantially over the wing dikes (146,000 cfs, May 2001) substrates within most wing dikes showed substantial reorganization and coarsening.</p><p>The habitat assessment provides a geospatial database that can be used to query wing dikes for distributions of depth, velocity, and substrate for comparison with fish samples collected by US Fish and Wildlife Service biologists (Grady and others, 2001). In addition, the assessment documented spatial and temporal variation in habitat within the Hermann reach and over a range of discharges. Measurable geomorphic change – alteration of substrate conditions plus substantial erosion and deposition – was associated with flows equaled or exceeded 12–40% of the time (40–140 days per year). Documented geomorphic change associated with high-frequency flows underscores the natural temporal variability of physical habitat in the Lower Missouri River.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr0232","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Transportation","usgsCitation":"Jacobson, R.B., Laustrup, M.S., and Reuter, J.M., 2002, Habitat assessment, Missouri River at Hermann, Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002—32, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0232.","productDescription":"Report: 22 p.; 2 Appendixes","numberOfPages":"22","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160577,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0032/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":7895,"rank":5,"type":{"id":3,"text":"Appendix"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0032/ofr20020032_appendix2.pdf","text":"Appendix 2","size":"908 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"- Reach Map"},{"id":7894,"rank":3,"type":{"id":3,"text":"Appendix"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0032/ofr20020032_appendix1.pdf","text":"Appendix 1","size":"61.6 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"- Dike Field Maps"},{"id":376076,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0032/ofr20020032.pdf","text":"Report","size":"4.19 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2002-32"}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","city":"Hermann","otherGeospatial":"Missouri River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.10937499999999,\n              38.348118547988065\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.41473388671875,\n              38.348118547988065\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.41473388671875,\n              38.79904887985135\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.10937499999999,\n              38.79904887985135\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.10937499999999,\n              38.348118547988065\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/cerc\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/cerc\">Columbia Environmental Research Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>4200 New Haven Road<br>Columbia, MO 65201</p><p><a href=\"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Abstract</li><li>Introduction</li><li>Purpose and Scope</li><li>Methods</li><li>Results</li><li>Conclusions</li><li>Acknowledgments</li><li>References Cited</li></ul>","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"publishedDate":"2002-04-01","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-04-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6496af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jacobson, Robert B. 0000-0002-8368-2064 rjacobson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8368-2064","contributorId":1289,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jacobson","given":"Robert","email":"rjacobson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206442,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laustrup, Mark S.","contributorId":31028,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laustrup","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206443,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Reuter, Joanna M.","contributorId":50179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reuter","given":"Joanna","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206444,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The study goal was to provide information necessary for resource managers to develop management strategies for this and other units of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Researchers studied the hydrology, limnology, and biological dynamics of zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish and waterbird communities.\r\n\r\nLisbon Bottom is one of several parcels of 1993 flood-damaged land that was purchased from willing sellers by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Lisbon Bottom is a loop bend in the river near Glasgow in Howard County, Missouri between approximately river mile (RM) 213 to RM 219. Flooding at Lisbon in 1993 and 1995 breeched local levees and created a diverse wetland complex.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20041036","usgsCitation":"Chapman, D.C., Ehrhardt, E.A., Fairchaild, J.F., Jacobson, R.B., Poulton, B.C, Sappington, L.C., Kelly, B.P., and Mabee, W.R., 2002, Ecological dynamics of wetlands at Lisbon Bottom, Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Missouri: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2004—1036, 160 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20041036.","productDescription":"ii, 160 p.","numberOfPages":"160","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":177723,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1036/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":5050,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1036/ofr20041036.pdf","text":"Report","size":"18.6 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 2004-1036"}],"country":"United States","state":"Missouri","otherGeospatial":"Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, Lisbon Bottom","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.98896789550781,\n              38.93324140329966\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.65869140625,\n              38.93324140329966\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.65869140625,\n              39.102890286764726\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98896789550781,\n              39.102890286764726\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.98896789550781,\n              38.93324140329966\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Revised 2003","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/cerc\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/cerc\">Columbia Environmental Research Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>4200 New Haven Road<br>Columbia, MO 65201</p><p><a href=\"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","tableOfContents":"<ul><li>Executive Summary</li><li>Introduction</li><li>Chapter 1. Geophysical logs include gamma, normal resistivity, fluid-column temperature and resistivity, caliper, televiewer, and heat-pulse flowmeter. These logs were run in two boreholes penetrating only the Fountain Formation of Pennsylvanian and Permian age (logged to depths of about 65 and 570 feet) and in four boreholes (logged to depths of about 342 to 742 feet) penetrating mostly the Fountain Formation and terminating in Precambrian crystalline rock, which underlies the Fountain Formation. Data from the logs were used to identify fractures and bedding planes and to locate the contact between the two formations. The logs indicated few fractures in the boreholes and gave no indication of higher transmissivity in the contact zone between the two formations. Transmissivities for all fractures in each borehole were estimated to be less than 2 feet squared per day.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr02364","usgsCitation":"Paillet, F.L., Hodges, R.E., and Corland, B.S., 2002, Analysis of geophysical logs from six boreholes at Lariat Gulch, former U.S. Air Force site PJKS, Jefferson County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-364, 39 p., 10 figs., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02364.","productDescription":"39 p., 10 figs.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":178432,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4165,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr02364","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db6804f5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":38191,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242085,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hodges, Richard E.","contributorId":47452,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hodges","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242086,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Corland, Barbara S.","contributorId":83598,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corland","given":"Barbara","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242087,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Kanaga Island is an elongated, low-relief (except for the volcano) island, located about 35 kilometers west of the community of Adak on Adak Island and is part of the Andreanof Islands Group of islands. Kanaga Volcano is one of the 41 historically active volcanoes in Alaska and has erupted numerous times in the past 11,000 years, including at least 10 eruptions in the past 250 years (Miller and others, 1998). The most recent eruption occurred in 1993-95 and caused minor ash fall on Adak Island and produced blocky aa lava flows that reached the sea on the northwest and west sides of the volcano (Neal and others, 1995).\n\nThe summit of the volcano is characterized by a small, circular crater about 200 meters in diameter and 50-70 meters deep. Several active fumaroles are present in the crater and around the crater rim. The flanking slopes of the volcano are steep (20-30 degrees) and consist mainly of blocky, linear to spoonshaped lava flows that formed during eruptions of late Holocene age (about the past 3,000 years). The modern cone sits within a circular caldera structure that formed by large-scale collapse of a preexisting volcano. Evidence for eruptions of this preexisting volcano mainly consists of lava flows exposed along Kanaton Ridge, indicating that this former volcanic center was predominantly effusive in character. In winter (October-April), Kanaga Volcano may be covered by substantial amounts of snow that would be a source of water for lahars (volcanic mudflows). In summer, much of the snowpack melts, leaving only a patchy distribution of snow on the volcano. Glacier ice is not present on the volcano or on other parts of Kanaga Island.\n\nKanaga Island is uninhabited and is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The island is remote and often shrouded by clouds and fog. It can be reached only by boat, helicopter,or amphibiouslanding aircraft.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr02397","usgsCitation":"Waythomas, C.F., Miller, T.P., and Nye, C.J., 2002, Preliminary volcano-hazard assessment for Kanaga Volcano, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-397, Report: iv, 34 p.; Plate: 29.00 inches x 21.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02397.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 34 p.; Plate: 29.00 inches x 21.00 inches","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":121,"text":"Alaska Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":4175,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0397/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":179335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":283893,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0397/pdf/of02-397.pdf"},{"id":283894,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0397/pdf/of02-397plate.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Mount Kanaga","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -177.263031,51.361492 ], [ -177.263031,51.655519 ], [ -177.025452,51.655519 ], [ -177.025452,51.361492 ], [ -177.263031,51.361492 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ee4b07f02db660547","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waythomas, Christopher F. 0000-0002-3898-272X cwaythomas@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3898-272X","contributorId":640,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Waythomas","given":"Christopher","email":"cwaythomas@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":242111,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, Thomas P. tmiller@usgs.gov","contributorId":4183,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Thomas","email":"tmiller@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":121,"text":"Alaska Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":242112,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nye, Christopher J.","contributorId":55418,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nye","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":121,"text":"Alaska Volcano Observatory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":242113,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Increasing demands for water from the Floridan aquifer system in Duval County (fig. 1) have resulted in a need to evaluate changes in water levels and chloride concentrations. Rapid population growth in Duval County is creating an increasing demand for freshwater. In 1960, the population of Duval County was about 455,000 (Brown and others, 1986), and in 2000 it was estimated to be about 779,000. As population continues to increase, additional water supplies will be needed. Increases in pumpage to meet these demands will lower the potentiometric surface and increase the potential for the upward movement of saline water from deeper zones of the aquifer system (Spechler, 1994; and Phelps and Spechler, 1997). The increased demand for water from the Floridan aquifer system requires that this valuable resource be adequately managed. Information on the trends in the potentiometric surface and chloride concentrations in the Floridan aquifer system is necessary for proper planning and management.\r\n\r\nThis map report, prepared in cooperation with the City of Jacksonville, depicts the altitude of the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in Duval County, and shows trends in the potentiometric surface and in chloride concentrations in the Floridan aquifer system at selected locations. The information presented in this report includes: (1) graphs showing water use for Duval and adjacent counties from 1965 to 1999; (2) maps showing the altitude of the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer in Duval County for January-February 1960, September 1998, and May 1999; (3) a map showing changes in the potentiometric surface of the Upper Floridan aquifer from January-February 1960 to May 1999; (4) hydrographs showing long-term water levels of selected wells in Duval County; and (5) graphs showing chloride concentrations in water at selected wells in Duval County.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr02426","usgsCitation":"Spechler, R.M., 2002, Variations in water levels and chloride concentrations in the Floridan aquifer system in Duval County, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-426, HTML Document, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02426.","productDescription":"HTML Document","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":176515,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":390822,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_69883.htm"},{"id":4203,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr02-426/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Duval County","otherGeospatial":"Floridan aquifer","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.0519,\n              30.0931\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.3761,\n              30.0931\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.3761,\n              30.5761\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.0519,\n              30.5761\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.0519,\n              30.0931\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e494fe4b07f02db591ba3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spechler, Rick M. spechler@usgs.gov","contributorId":1364,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spechler","given":"Rick","email":"spechler@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":242124,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
