Data on flood stages, discharges, and frequency are used in the design of bridges and other structures and the conduct of various operations on the flood plains of streams. This report provides these data in the form of flood-peak records, gaging-station records, frequency curves, and flood profiles. Information is provided for 253 miles of streams from near Boone on the main stem to the Iowa-Minnesota state line on the East and West Forks of the Des Moines River.
\nFlood profiles on the main stem include those for the notable flood of 1954, the lesser flood of 1947, and the computed 25- and 50-year floods. On the West Fork, profiles are shown for the outstanding flood of April 1969; lesser floods in April 1965, July 1964, and September 1964; and the computed 25- and 50-year floods. On the East Fork, profiles are shown for the April 1965 flood from the mouth to Algona and for the April 1969 flood from Algona to Tuttle Lake; for a lesser flood in October 1968; and for the computed 25- and 50-year floods. Low-water profiles are shown for all reaches.
\nTabulations of flood stages and discharges at gaging stations contained in this report can be used for volumetric studies. They can also be used to study the time distribution of stage and discharge above a selected level.

Increasing urban development on or adjacent to the recharge area of the aquifer is causing great concern because of possible pollution of the ground water. A detailed map of the surface geology has been prepared for areas where the greatest threat of pollution exists. Water-quality data are being collected throughout the San Antonio area to provide background reference information and to detect any current pollution of the ground water in the Edwards and associated limestones.
\nMapping of the surface geology will continue in areas where waste waters may be recharging the aquifer. Water-quality data will be collected at additional sites, and some sites will be resampled where pollution may be occurring or where more background data are needed.

Estimated municipal pumpage is based on census figures and population projections and on pumpage reported by organizations in the San Joaquin Valley supplying water to communities. On the average, 0.25 to 0.40 acre- foot of water is used annually per capita, depending upon the population and number of industries in the community. The product of population by appropriate per capita use factor gives an estimated annual pumpage for a municipality.

Several faults that transect the alluvial deposits retard the flow of ground water and divide the area into seven separate ground-water subbasins. Each of the subbasins was evaluated as a potential recharge site, and Wilson Creek subbasin was selected as the most favorable. The study indicates that artificial recharge of 6,000 acre-feet per year should be possible through surface spreading in Wilson Creek subbasin.
The test drilling and infiltration test conducted at the Yucaipa damsite indicate that material underlying the site is highly permeable and readily transmits water. An unlined reservoir at this site would initially lose a considerable quantity of water through infiltration and would be difficult, if not impossible, to fill.

Primarily, they are used for recreation but many have potential for industrial use and for water supply.
Lakes have water surfaces ·that expand and decrease in area, and levels that rise and fall. Records of lakes levels show that lake stages change, have seasonal trends, and may fluctuate several feet each year. Often; these changes affect the use of lakes and cause erosion of their shorelines. It is important, therefore, to monitor lake levels in order to add to their understanding and to provide a basis for increasing their usefulness.
In the early 1940's, and in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, a network of lake gages was established in Michigan to observe lake levels. In subsequent years, this network of lake gages was changed to provide a broad areal coverage of lakes in the State, to answer specific requests for data, and to obtain information on a large portion of Michigan's many lakes. These data have been applied primarily in studies involving the design of lake-level control facilities and establishing legal levels for lakes.

March precipitation was light, but at the end of the month water content of snow on the ground was as much as 8 inches in some parts of the area. Unusually heavy rains in the fall of 1968 throughout the area, and as much as 3 inches of localized spring rain in the Red River basin during the period April 7-10, 1969, accentuated the flooding.
Flood data are presented for 285 gaging sites in this report. Peak stages and discharges exceeded previous known maxima in the upstream tributaries of the Red River of the North, upper Minnesota River basin, upper basin of West Fork Des Moines River, and the James, Vermillion, and Big Sioux River basins. In many other basins the 1969 floods were the second highest in many years of record. Recurrence intervals exceeded 50 years for 71 of the 178 sites for which recurrence intervals were computed.
Flood-crest elevations and flood profiles show the peak stages expressed in mean sea level at many points in the Mississippi, Minnesota, Red, Souris, West Fork Des Moines, Rock, and Little Rock River basins.
Sediment discharge data obtained in a small part of the lower Minnesota River basin indicated varying yields during the month of April ranging from 26 to 396 tons per square mile.
Aerial photography during the flood was obtained in a number of river basins. The river reaches which were photographed are tabulated and the location of the photographs indicated.
Flood damages were estimated to be about $147 million in the six States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Eleven lives were lost to the flood, more than 23,000 persons were forced from their homes, more than a million acres of rich agricultural land were inundated, and thousands of culverts and bridges were washed out on highways and secondary roads.
