At least 25 different minerals and industrial rocks occur in the area, but of these materials only asbestos seems to have a real possibility for industrial development. Twenty occurrences of asbestos were found around the Higera gold mine and between Hamdah and Bi'r El Marwahs A favorable area for asbestos exists north and east of Tathlith, but none was discovered there. It is recommended that the Hamdah-Bi'r El Marwah area be examined in detail, and the Higera and Tathlith areas receive reconnaissance studies for asbestos. Asbestos is a high-value commodity which can be processed by air separation, thereby freeing its benefitiation from dependence on water. Examination of the asbestos deposits would have as a by-product an appraisal of the resources of soapstone, anthophyllite, talc, vermiculite, chromite, calcite, gold, and copper in the three asbestos districts.</p><p>Thirty-six occurrences of marble were found in the area. Several have favorable characteristics for industrial or architectural use.</p><p>One ancient mine, the Ishaaib (19°15'N.x 43°40'E.), may contain copper.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68207","usgsCitation":"Overstreet, W.C., 1968, Mineral exploration between Bi'ir Idimah and Wadi Haraman, Asir quadrangle, Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-207, 70 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68207.","productDescription":"70 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146386,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0207/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":491049,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0207/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Saudi Arabia","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              39.287109375,\n              32.287132632616384\n            ],\n            [\n              40.166015625,\n              32.175612478499346\n            ],\n            [\n              41.87988281249999,\n              31.57853542647338\n            ],\n            [\n              43.1982421875,\n              30.939924331023445\n            ],\n            [\n              43.681640625,\n              30.486550842588485\n            ],\n            [\n              44.8681640625,\n              29.80251790576445\n            ],\n            [\n              46.669921875,\n              29.573457073017593\n            ],\n            [\n              48.2080078125,\n              28.806173508854776\n            ],\n            [\n              49.833984375,\n              27.527758206861886\n            ],\n            [\n              51.767578125,\n              26.194876675795218\n            ],\n            [\n              51.9873046875,\n              25.005972656239187\n            ],\n            [\n              52.2509765625,\n              24.046463999666567\n            ],\n            [\n              53.7451171875,\n              23.200960808078566\n            ],\n            [\n              55.283203125,\n              22.917922936146045\n            ],\n            [\n              56.03027343749999,\n              21.94304553343818\n            ],\n            [\n              55.107421875,\n              19.80805412808859\n            ],\n            [\n              51.7236328125,\n              18.60460138845525\n            ],\n            [\n              48.69140625,\n              18.104087015773946\n            ],\n            [\n              47.548828125,\n              16.804541076383455\n            ],\n            [\n              46.05468749999999,\n              16.846605106396304\n            ],\n            [\n              43.681640625,\n              17.18277905643184\n            ],\n            [\n              43.1103515625,\n              16.25686733062344\n            ],\n            [\n              42.3193359375,\n              16.3833911236084\n            ],\n            [\n              40.4736328125,\n              18.8543103618898\n            ],\n            [\n              38.8916015625,\n              21.002471054356725\n            ],\n            [\n              38.408203125,\n              22.553147478403194\n            ],\n            [\n              36.7822265625,\n              24.966140159912975\n            ],\n            [\n              34.9365234375,\n              27.527758206861886\n            ],\n            [\n              34.4091796875,\n              27.916766641249065\n            ],\n            [\n              34.80468749999999,\n              29.458731185355344\n            ],\n            [\n              35.9033203125,\n              29.458731185355344\n            ],\n            [\n              36.6943359375,\n              30.031055426540206\n            ],\n            [\n              37.353515625,\n              30.221101852485987\n            ],\n            [\n              37.4853515625,\n              30.675715404167743\n            ],\n            [\n              36.650390625,\n              31.39115752282472\n            ],\n            [\n              37.3095703125,\n              31.87755764334002\n            ],\n            [\n              39.287109375,\n              32.287132632616384\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635a2e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Overstreet, William C.","contributorId":73586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Overstreet","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170884,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These concentrations may be characterized by a simple relation between the speed of the moving objects and their spacing as a result of interaction between them.</p><p>Vehicular traffic has long been known to have such properties. Data are introduced to show that beads carried by flowing water in a narrow flume behave in an analogous way. The flux or transport of objects in a single lane of traffic is greatest when the objects are spaced about two diameters apart; beads in a single-lane flume as well as highway traffic conform to this property.</p><p>By considering the sand in a pipe or flume to a depth affected by dune movement, it is shown that flux-concentration curves similar to the previously known cases can be constructed from experimental data. From the kinematic point of view, concentration of particles in dunes and other wave bed forms results when particles in transport become more numerous or closely spaced and interact to reduce the effectiveness of the ambient water to move them.</p><p>Field observations over a 5-year period are reported in which individual rocks were painted for identification and placed at various spacings on the bed of ephemeral stream in New Mexico, to study the effect of storm flows on rock movement. The data on about 14,000 rocks so observed show the effect of variable spacing which is quantitatively as well as qualitatively comparable to the spacing effect on small glass beads in a flume. </p><p>Dunes and gravel bars may be considered kinematic waves caused by particle interaction, and certain of their properties can be related to the characteristics of the flux-concentration curve.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp422L","usgsCitation":"Langbein, W.B., and Leopold, L.B., 1968, River channel bars and dunes - Theory of kinematic waves: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 422, iii, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp422L.","productDescription":"iii, 20 p.","startPage":"L1","endPage":"L20","numberOfPages":"25","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":33125,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0422l/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":126535,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0422l/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a11e4b07f02db60008d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langbein, Walter Basil","contributorId":40581,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langbein","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"Basil","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152077,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The principal geologic units in the vicinity are volcanic rocks, which in places are highly permeable and poorly permeable lake sedimentary deposits, all probably post-Oligocene in age. Yields and specific capacities of wells in the unconfined water body within volcanic rocks and lake deposits range widely, but in general are low in the lake deposits and higher in the volcanic rocks. A confined water body occurring in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits yields large quantities of water to three wells in the study area. \r\n\r\nDissolved-solids content of ground water generally increases in proportion to the thickness of lake deposits penetrated and to proximity of the lake deposits. Water from wells drilled in the volcanic rocks several miles from the lake deposits and from wells penetrating the confined water body in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits contains small to moderate quantities of dissolved solids. \r\n\r\nGround-water supplies can be developed almost anywhere in the study area by drilling wells to depths below the water table. In addition, there is a reasonable possibility of developing wells in a confined water body underlying the water-table system.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey, Water Resources Division,","doi":"10.3133/ofr68140","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hotchkiss, W.R., 1968, A geologic and hydrologic reconnaissance of Lava Beds National Monument and vicinity, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-140, ii, 56 p., [1] folded leaf of plates :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68140.","productDescription":"ii, 56 p., [1] folded leaf of plates :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156226,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52695,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52696,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae67f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hotchkiss, W. Soundings were made on the northwestern part of the island of Oahu near the town of Waialua and on the island of Hawaii on the \"saddle\" area near Pohekuloa and the Humuula sheep station. On Oahu, the geoelectrical study indicates that correlation among four stratigraphic units underlain by a vesicular basalt basement is possible. The electrical soundings indicate that it is feasible to determine the approximate depth to the fresh-saline water interface within the basalt. Two Schlumberger soundings with electrode spacings, AB/2, reaching 6,000 feel give sounding curves of the maximum and minimum type whose terminal branches indicate that the true resistivity of basalts saturated with sea water, in the survey area on Oahu, is about 30-40 ohm-m. On the island of Hawaii, an exploratory well drilled in basalt to a depth of 1,001 feet proved to be dry. In the area of this well, two deep soundings were made using the Schlumberger and the equatorial arrays. Although additional soundings at various orientations and larger spacings are needed, there appears to be a conductive layer below 1,600 feet which may represent basalt saturated with fresh water.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68341","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Department of Land and Natural Resources of the State Similarly altered water-washed tuff occurs as tongues in the uppermost part of this member, and forms most of the lower 400-600 feet of the overlying Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation. \r\n\r\n'The altered ash-fall beds of the Parachute Creek Member are all thin and show a characteristic pattern of alteration. Most beds range in thickness from a fraction of an inch to a few inches. One bed reaches a maximum thickness of 5 feet, and, unlike the other beds, is composed of several successive ash falls. The pattern of alteration changes from the outer part to the center of the basin. Most beds in the outer part of the basin contain about 50 to 65 percent analcite,with the interstices between the crystals filled mainly by microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, and small amounts of carbonate. At the center of the basin .essentially all the beds -are composed of microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, and small amounts of carbonate. The tongues of water-washed tuff in the uppermost part of the Parachute Creek Member and the similar rocks composing the lower 400-600 feet of the Evacuation Creek Mewber are feldspathized rocks composed mainly of microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, varying amounts of carbonate, and in some specimens tiny subrounded crystals of analcite. \r\n\r\nThe general trend in alteration of the tuffaceous rocks from analcitization near the margin to feidspathization near the center of the Piceance Creek Basin is believed to have taken place at shallow depth during diagenesis , as indicated by field observations and laboratory work. It is believed that during sedimentation and diagenesis the waters of the central part of the basin were more alkaline and following the breakdown of the original tuffaceous glass to a colloidal gel during diagenesis analcitized rocks crystallized near the basin margin and feldspathized rocks crystallized near the center of the basin.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68113","usgsCitation":"Griggs, R.L., 1968, Altered tuffaceous rocks of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Creek Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-113, Report: ii, 38 p.; 3 Plates: 23.73 x 26.29 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68113.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 38 p.; 3 Plates: 23.73 x 26.29 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":492933,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8249.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":145386,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0113/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":42548,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0113/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42549,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0113/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42550,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0113/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":42551,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0113/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado","otherGeospatial":"Green River Formation in the Piceance Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -108.667,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.667,\n              39.227\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.942,\n              39.227\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.942,\n              40\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.667,\n              40\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686872","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Griggs, Roy Lee","contributorId":54170,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Griggs","given":"Roy","email":"","middleInitial":"Lee","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During an average year, more than 350 billion gallons of water flow into the Gulf of Mexico from the streams of the county. With storage reservoirs these streams have a potential sustained supply of hundreds of millions of. gallons per day. Recreation uses and flood-control benefits could also be considered in reservoir design. \r\n\r\nUpstream from the zones of salt-water penetration, mineral content is low and fairly constant. Water in the streams generally has high color and low pH ; treatment would be required for most municipal and industrial uses. Impoundment in reservoirs normally would have little effect on the quality of the surface water. However, impoundment would trap most of the suspended-sediment load of the streams. \r\n\r\nFlooding along the major streams of Harrison County is a minor hazard at present (1966), but with further industrial development and urbanization, flooding in these now rural areas could become serious. Intense rainfall from thunderstorms and hurricanes causes serious local flooding in the populous areas near the coast. Tidal flooding, a result of tropical storms, is an ever-present hazard in areas near the coast. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water reservoir, which at present provides all fresh-water supplies, is capable of supporting many times the 25 million gallons per day withdrawal through existing wells. Fresh water occurs to depths as great as 2,500 feet in sand aquifers of Pliocene and Miocene age. Many of the aquifers have high transmissibility; most of those tested have transmissibility in the range, of 50,000-100,000 gallons per day per foot. Although few wells produce more than 1,000 gallons per minute, several of the aquifers can yield two to three times that amount to wells designed for the higher production. \r\n\r\nArtesian water levels along the coast are declining at a rate of 1 foot per year on the average; however, water levels are still above or only slightly below the land surface in most places, and considerable additional drawdown is economically available. Newly discovered deep aquifers (1,700-2,500 ft) have water levels 100 feet above the surface and probably will provide flow yields of 2,000 gallons per minute or more. The temperature of this deep water is nearly 100?F. \r\n\r\nNearly all the ground water is of good quality and requires little or no treatment for most uses. It is soft, and total mineral content is usually less than 250 parts per million. Color is seldom a problem, although it may have to be considered in the undeveloped deep aquifers. The pH ordinarily is greater than 7.0, but it is slightly less than 7.0 in most places in the shallow aquifers.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey; for sale by the Supt. of Docs.] U.S. Govt. Tertiary volcanic rocks consisting of flows and welded tuffs show good tonal contrasts within themselves. Precambrian granites and gneisses appear mottled. Water courses appear as dark streaks, cold water springs as dark patches, and water standing in ponds and reservoirs is bright in contrast to the darker (cooler) surrounding This report describes the results of a reconnaissance hydrogeologic investigation of the Province and the nature and distribution of the ground-water resources with respect to their availability for development. Kordofan Province, in central Sudan, lies within the White Nile-Nile River drainage basin. The land surface is largely a plain of low relief; jebels (hills) occur sporadically, and sandy soils are common in most areas except in the south where clayey soils predominate. Seasonal rainfall, ranging from less than 100 millimeters in the north to about 800 millimeters in the south, occurs almost entirely during the summer months, but little runoff ever reaches the Nile or White Nile Rivers. \r\n\r\nThe rocks beneath the surficial depsits (Pleistocene to Recent) in the Province comprise the basement complex (Precambrian), Nawa Series (upper Paleozoic), Nubian Series (Mesozoic), laterite (lower to middle Tertiary), and the Umm Ruwaba Series (Pliocene to Pleistocene). \r\n\r\nPerennial ground-water supplies in the Province are found chiefly in five hydrologic units, each having distinct geologic or hydrologic characteristics. These units occur in Nubian or Umm Ruwaba strata or both, and the sandstone and conglomerate beds form the :principal aquifers. The water is generally under slight artesian head, and the upper surface of the zone of saturation ranges from about 50 meters to 160 meters below land surface. The surficial deposits and basement rocks are generally poor sources of ground water in most of the Province. Supplies from such sources are commonly temporary and may dissipate entirely during the dry season. Locally, however, perennial supplies are obtained from the surficial deposits and from the basement rocks. \r\n\r\nGenerally, water from Nubian aquifers is satisfactory for most uses and is of better quality than that obtained from Umm Ruwaba aquifers. The relatively high mineralization of water from the Umm Ruwaba, especially in the eastern \r\npart of the Province, makes the water unsuitable for many municipal ad industrial uses. The water is generally usable, however, for domestic and livestock purposes. \r\n\r\nSome 175 drilled wells located at 75 water yards yield an average, of about 1,000 imperial gallons .per hour per well from Nubian or Umm Ruwaba. aquifers. Generally the water yards provide sufficient water for minimum domestic and livestock requirements throughout the year. Commonly, however, the water yards are widely separated and, hence, not always properly spaced for good range management or for serving the needs of the dispersed rural population. In 1962, withdrawals from Nubian and Umm Ruwaba aquifers in the Province were approximately 600 million gallons annually. This rate of draft: could probably be continued almost indefinitely without significant depletion of the water supply. Nubian and Umm Ruwaba aquifers in the southwestern part of Kordofan offer excellent potential for future development. Nubian aquifers in northern Kordofan need extensive exploration by test drilling before their economic potential can be properly evaluated.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1757J","usgsCitation":"Rodis, H.G., Hassan, A., and Wahadan, L., 1968, Ground-water geology of Kordofan Province, Sudan: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1757, iv, 48 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1757J.","productDescription":"iv, 48 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138833,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1757j/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28903,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1757j/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28904,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1757j/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668d8e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rodis, Harry G.","contributorId":25141,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rodis","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145495,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hassan, Abdulla","contributorId":102866,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hassan","given":"Abdulla","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145497,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wahadan, Lutfi","contributorId":64231,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wahadan","given":"Lutfi","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145496,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
