The flood release from these reservoirs is to be restricted so that flows will not exceed 6,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) in t he Merced River at the gaging station near Stevinson (about 5 miles upstream from the mouth). Computed floodwater profiles based on channel conditions in late 1967 and observed water-surface profiles for historic floods were used in the analysis. The conclusions reached are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow.</p>\n<p>Evaluation of historical flood records at gaging stations between Merced Falls and Stevinson indicates that a reduction in peak discharge occurs as the floods traverse the study reach. Reduction in peak discharge is dependent on river stage, prior river flows, magnitude of tributary inflow, bank storage and infiltration to the ground-water reservoir, and diversion for irrigation. For example, in late June 1967 a peak discharge of 9,860 cfs at Merced Falls was reduced by irrigation diversions to 6,850 cfs at a site 3 miles downstream and further reduced to 6,490 cfs at the gaging station near Stevinson.</p>\n<p>Backwater effect from high stages on t he San Joaquin River will increase stages on the Merced River and the effect may extend as far as 8 miles up stream from the junction of the two rivers. Backwater may cause some overbank flooding along the 8-mile reach when Merced River flows at Stevinson exceed 4,000 cfs . Most of the area subject to such inundation lies between levees that are a considerable distance--up to half a mile-- from the main channel . In the reach upstream from the backwater effect, a discharge of 4, 500 cfs near Stevinson will cause flooding at two locations, one of which is about 10 miles upstream an the other about 18.5 miles upstream from the confluence . When the discharge is 6,000 cfs , additional sites will be inundated, particularly the 20.5-mile reach of channel downstream from the Highway 99 crossing.</p>\n<p>A discharge of 6,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the reach but overbank flooding may occur if debris should lodge against the bridge piers and significantly reduce the waterway area .</p>\n<p>Peak flows in Dry Creek, as measured 18.7 miles upstream from the mouth of Dry Creek, will be attenuated due to channel storage and will increase the discharge of the Merced River at Cressey by only about 50 per cent of t he Dry Creek peak discharge. These concentrations may be characterized by a simple relation between the speed of the moving objects and their spacing as a result of interaction between them.</p><p>Vehicular traffic has long been known to have such properties. Data are introduced to show that beads carried by flowing water in a narrow flume behave in an analogous way. The flux or transport of objects in a single lane of traffic is greatest when the objects are spaced about two diameters apart; beads in a single-lane flume as well as highway traffic conform to this property.</p><p>By considering the sand in a pipe or flume to a depth affected by dune movement, it is shown that flux-concentration curves similar to the previously known cases can be constructed from experimental data. From the kinematic point of view, concentration of particles in dunes and other wave bed forms results when particles in transport become more numerous or closely spaced and interact to reduce the effectiveness of the ambient water to move them.</p><p>Field observations over a 5-year period are reported in which individual rocks were painted for identification and placed at various spacings on the bed of ephemeral stream in New Mexico, to study the effect of storm flows on rock movement. Montro kyanite deposit, 14 miles north of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia, is near the middle of a belt of kyanite-bearing gneisses and schists that is 9 miles long and 1 mile wide. The deposit, which seems to be the most persistent and the largest single body of kyanite rocks in the belt, is approximately 12, 600 feet long, as much as 480 feet in outcrop width, and from 25 to 350 feet thick. Kyanite-quartz-biotite-feldspar-garnet-muscovite gneiss, local interbeds of kyanite-mica schist, and lesser amounts of biotite-quartz gneiss, are the principal rocks in the deposit. Other rocks in the kyanite belt include garnet-biotite gneiss, undifferentiated quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, quartzite, and amphibolite. The rocks are the product of regional metamorphism to almandine amphibolite facies. The regional strike is northwest and dips are southwest.</p><p>Kyanite crystals are as much as 3 inches long. The kyanite content ranges from 5. 8 to 46. 7 percent, but most rocks contain between 10 and 35 percent. Garnetiferous beds contain as much as 15 percent red garnets that range to half an inch in diameter. In general, the garnet-rich beds are found in the upper part of the deposit.</p><p>he total reserves of the Mt. Montro kyanite deposit are estimated at about 10 million tons of kyanitic rock containing approximately 2.5 million tons of kyanite. These estimates include measured, indicated, and inferred reserves, calculated to depths of 25 to 100 feet, on the assumption that open-cut mining to those depths would be feasible. The largest part of the deposit underlies Mt. Montro and contains about 8 million tons of kyanitic rock containing nearly 1.9 million tons of kyanite. Residual soil overlying the deposit averages about 5 feet in thickness and is estimated to comprise slightly more than 400,000 cubic yards of material containing about 186,000 tons of kyanite.</p><p>The proximity of the kyanite deposit to a paved highway, to port facilities at Buchanan, and to water, electrical power, and timber resources are considered favorable factors relevant to possible development. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68258","usgsCitation":"Stanin, S.A., and Cooper, B.R., 1968, The Mt. The origin of the river is in glacial moraine. The river flows through end moraines and rolling till plains, across an extensive outwash plain occupied by large reservoir lakes, and finally across an extensive marshy plain which is the bed of an ancient glacial lake.</p>\n<p>Glacial deposits in the watershed include till, lenses of sand and gravel in till, outwash deposits of sand and gravel, and lake deposits of fine sand, silt, and clay. Beneath the glacial drift is an uneven surface of Precambrian bedrock. Bedrock consists of igneous intrusives and metamorphosed sedimentary formations.</p>\n<p>Water resources in the area are abundant. Lakes and streams occupy about 8 percent of the surface of the area. At least 25 different minerals and industrial rocks occur in the area, but of these materials only asbestos seems to have a real possibility for industrial development. Twenty occurrences of asbestos were found around the Higera gold mine and between Hamdah and Bi'r El Marwahs A favorable area for asbestos exists north and east of Tathlith, but none was discovered there. It is recommended that the Hamdah-Bi'r El Marwah area be examined in detail, and the Higera and Tathlith areas receive reconnaissance studies for asbestos. Asbestos is a high-value commodity which can be processed by air separation, thereby freeing its benefitiation from dependence on water. Examination of the asbestos deposits would have as a by-product an appraisal of the resources of soapstone, anthophyllite, talc, vermiculite, chromite, calcite, gold, and copper in the three asbestos districts.</p><p>Thirty-six occurrences of marble were found in the area. The method was developed as a working base for the release entitled \"Estimated stream discharge entering Chesapeake Bay\" prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This release, issued monthly beginning December 1967, is directed to the various groups who have need for such data in their studies of the environment and resources of the Bay. A copy of that release is included as an appendix to this report.</p><p>In addition to the methodology used in making estimates of inflow, the report presents considerable data on drainage basins and on streamflow patterns. The report thus serves as a reference for those receiving the monthly release on current conditions. No account is taken of ground-water inflow or of rainfall on and evaporation from the water surface of the Bay. The scope of the study was to interpret and relate streamflow, climatic, geologic, and ground-water information. Because of its reconnaissance nature, this report should serve as background information. More specific water information for many areas of the Fox-Wolf River basin is available at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey in Madison. This study is part of a planned investigation of the geology and water resources of the rapidly developing Fox River valley industrial complex and municipal region extending from Green Bay to Fond du Lac.
