During an average year, more than 350 billion gallons of water flow into the Gulf of Mexico from the streams of the county. With storage reservoirs these streams have a potential sustained supply of hundreds of millions of. gallons per day. Recreation uses and flood-control benefits could also be considered in reservoir design. \r\n\r\nUpstream from the zones of salt-water penetration, mineral content is low and fairly constant. Water in the streams generally has high color and low pH ; treatment would be required for most municipal and industrial uses. Impoundment in reservoirs normally would have little effect on the quality of the surface water. However, impoundment would trap most of the suspended-sediment load of the streams. \r\n\r\nFlooding along the major streams of Harrison County is a minor hazard at present (1966), but with further industrial development and urbanization, flooding in these now rural areas could become serious. Intense rainfall from thunderstorms and hurricanes causes serious local flooding in the populous areas near the coast. Tidal flooding, a result of tropical storms, is an ever-present hazard in areas near the coast. \r\n\r\nThe ground-water reservoir, which at present provides all fresh-water supplies, is capable of supporting many times the 25 million gallons per day withdrawal through existing wells. Fresh water occurs to depths as great as 2,500 feet in sand aquifers of Pliocene and Miocene age. Many of the aquifers have high transmissibility; most of those tested have transmissibility in the range, of 50,000-100,000 gallons per day per foot. Although few wells produce more than 1,000 gallons per minute, several of the aquifers can yield two to three times that amount to wells designed for the higher production. \r\n\r\nArtesian water levels along the coast are declining at a rate of 1 foot per year on the average; however, water levels are still above or only slightly below the land surface in most places, and considerable additional drawdown is economically available. Newly discovered deep aquifers (1,700-2,500 ft) have water levels 100 feet above the surface and probably will provide flow yields of 2,000 gallons per minute or more. The temperature of this deep water is nearly 100?F. \r\n\r\nNearly all the ground water is of good quality and requires little or no treatment for most uses. It is soft, and total mineral content is usually less than 250 parts per million. Color is seldom a problem, although it may have to be considered in the undeveloped deep aquifers. The pH ordinarily is greater than 7.0, but it is slightly less than 7.0 in most places in the shallow aquifers.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey; for sale by the Supt. of Docs.] U.S. Govt. Other materials which are commonly strongly imaged on ultraviolet imagery and photography include water, snow, concrete, and metallic objects, particularly aluminum.

Outdoor tests of an active ultraviolet imaging system have demonstrated the feasibility of imaging ultraviolet stimulated luminescence of such minerals as talc, dolomite, and deweylite along quarry faces from distances of several hundred feet. The system features a cathode ray tube transmitter, an image dissector receiver, and a video monitor on which the distribution of luminescent material is imaged as the outcrop is scanned.

A pulsed ultraviolet laser emitting at 3371A has been used successfully in the laboratory to stimulate phosphorescence of selected rock and mineral specimens and to discriminate between them on the basis of decay time which ranges from less than three to more than 10 microseconds. Initial results suggest that sodic feldspars have longer decay periods than calcic feldspars. Some granites also appear to have decay periods significantly different from other types of granite in the same locality.

Outdoor tests with a high-resolution grating spectrometer were successful in detecting luminescent materials by means of the so-called \"Fraunhofer line-depth method\". This method is advantageous because it uses the sun so an ultraviolet source and therefore ifs independent of low-powered artificial sources such as cathode ray tubes, lasers, and mercury vapor lamps„ A Fraunhofer line- discriminator suitable for aircraft operation has been constructed, and initial on-the- ground tests are being performed on Rhodamine WT, a luminescent dye used by hydrologists and oceanographers in studies of current dynamics in streams and estuaries.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68126","usgsCitation":"Hemphill, W.R., 1968, Application of ultraviolet reflectance and stimulated luminescence to the remote detection of natural materials: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-126, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68126.","productDescription":"36 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":490857,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0126/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":397882,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/19690018949/downloads/19690018949.pdf","size":"6,304 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146665,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0126/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a5af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hemphill, William R.","contributorId":21970,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hemphill","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":168885,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Three dispersants, dye, fine sand and medium sand, were used with each of three flow conditions. The dispersant was injected as a continuous line source across the channel and downstream concentration profiles were measured. From these profiles along with the measured velocity distribution both the vertical mass transfer coefficient and the local particle fall velocity were determined.

The effects of secondary currents on the vertical mixing process were discussed. Data was taken and analyzed in such a way as to largely eliminate the effects of these currents on the measured values.

A procedure was developed by which the local value of the fall velocity of sand sized particles could be determined in an open channel flow. The fall velocity of the particles in the turbulent flow was always greater than their fall velocity in quiescent water.

Reynolds analogy between the transfer of momentum and marked fluid particles was further substantiated. The turbulent Schmidt number was shown to be approximately 1.03 for an open channel flow with a rough boundary. Eulerian turbulence measurements were not sufficient to predict the vertical transfer coefficient.

Vertical mixing of sediment is due to three semi-independent processes. These processes are: secondary currents, diffusion due to tangential velocity fluctuations and diffusion due to the curvature of the fluid particle path lines. The diffusion coefficient due to tangential velocity fluctuations is approximately proportional to the transfer coefficient of marked fluid particles. The proportionality constant is less than or equal to 1.0 and decreases with increasing particle size. The diffusion coefficient due to the curvature of the fluid particle path lines is not related to the diffusion coefficient for marked fluid particles and increases with particle size, at least for sediment particles in the sand size range. The total sediment transfer coefficient is equal to the sum of the coefficient due to tangential velocity fluctuations and the coefficient due to the curvature of the fluid particle path lines.

A numerical solution to the conservation of mass equation is given. The effects of the transfer coefficient, fall velocity and bed conditions on the predicted concentration profiles are illustrated.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68146","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Jobson, H.E., 1968, Vertical mass transfer in open channel flow: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-146, xvii, 204 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68146.","productDescription":"xvii, 204 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":347074,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0146/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":156854,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0146/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db60206d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jobson, Harvey E.","contributorId":27032,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jobson","given":"Harvey","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190169,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Soundings were made on the northwestern part of the island of Oahu near the town of Waialua and on the island of Hawaii on the \"saddle\" area near Pohekuloa and the Humuula sheep station. On Oahu, the geoelectrical study indicates that correlation among four stratigraphic units underlain by a vesicular basalt basement is possible. The electrical soundings indicate that it is feasible to determine the approximate depth to the fresh-saline water interface within the basalt. Two Schlumberger soundings with electrode spacings, AB/2, reaching 6,000 feel give sounding curves of the maximum and minimum type whose terminal branches indicate that the true resistivity of basalts saturated with sea water, in the survey area on Oahu, is about 30-40 ohm-m. On the island of Hawaii, an exploratory well drilled in basalt to a depth of 1,001 feet proved to be dry. In the area of this well, two deep soundings were made using the Schlumberger and the equatorial arrays. Although additional soundings at various orientations and larger spacings are needed, there appears to be a conductive layer below 1,600 feet which may represent basalt saturated with fresh water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68341","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Department of Land and Natural Resources of the State The principal geologic units in the vicinity are volcanic rocks, which in places are highly permeable and poorly permeable lake sedimentary deposits, all probably post-Oligocene in age. Yields and specific capacities of wells in the unconfined water body within volcanic rocks and lake deposits range widely, but in general are low in the lake deposits and higher in the volcanic rocks. A confined water body occurring in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits yields large quantities of water to three wells in the study area. \r\n\r\nDissolved-solids content of ground water generally increases in proportion to the thickness of lake deposits penetrated and to proximity of the lake deposits. Water from wells drilled in the volcanic rocks several miles from the lake deposits and from wells penetrating the confined water body in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits contains small to moderate quantities of dissolved solids. \r\n\r\nGround-water supplies can be developed almost anywhere in the study area by drilling wells to depths below the water table. In addition, there is a reasonable possibility of developing wells in a confined water body underlying the water-table system.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey, Water Resources Division,","doi":"10.3133/ofr68140","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Hotchkiss, W.R., 1968, A geologic and hydrologic reconnaissance of Lava Beds National Monument and vicinity, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 68-140, ii, 56 p., [1] folded leaf of plates :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr68140.","productDescription":"ii, 56 p., [1] folded leaf of plates :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156226,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52695,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52696,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1968/0140/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae67f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hotchkiss, W. The method was developed as a working base for the release entitled \"Estimated stream discharge entering Chesapeake Bay\" prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This release, issued monthly beginning December 1967, is directed to the various groups who have need for such data in their studies of the environment and resources of the Bay. A copy of that release is included as an appendix to this report.

In addition to the methodology used in making estimates of inflow, the report presents considerable data on drainage basins and on streamflow patterns. The report thus serves as a reference for those receiving the monthly release on current conditions. Montro kyanite deposit, Grand Bassa County, Liberia","docAbstract":"
The Mt. Montro kyanite deposit, 14 miles north of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia, is near the middle of a belt of kyanite-bearing gneisses and schists that is 9 miles long and 1 mile wide. The deposit, which seems to be the most persistent and the largest single body of kyanite rocks in the belt, is approximately 12, 600 feet long, as much as 480 feet in outcrop width, and from 25 to 350 feet thick. Kyanite-quartz-biotite-feldspar-garnet-muscovite gneiss, local interbeds of kyanite-mica schist, and lesser amounts of biotite-quartz gneiss, are the principal rocks in the deposit. Other rocks in the kyanite belt include garnet-biotite gneiss, undifferentiated quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, quartzite, and amphibolite. The rocks are the product of regional metamorphism to almandine amphibolite facies. The regional strike is northwest and dips are southwest.

Kyanite crystals are as much as 3 inches long. The kyanite content ranges from 5. 8 to 46. 7 percent, but most rocks contain between 10 and 35 percent. Garnetiferous beds contain as much as 15 percent red garnets that range to half an inch in diameter. In general, the garnet-rich beds are found in the upper part of the deposit.

he total reserves of the Mt. Montro kyanite deposit are estimated at about 10 million tons of kyanitic rock containing approximately 2.5 million tons of kyanite. These estimates include measured, indicated, and inferred reserves, calculated to depths of 25 to 100 feet, on the assumption that open-cut mining to those depths would be feasible. The largest part of the deposit underlies Mt. Montro and contains about 8 million tons of kyanitic rock containing nearly 1.9 million tons of kyanite. Residual soil overlying the deposit averages about 5 feet in thickness and is estimated to comprise slightly more than 400,000 cubic yards of material containing about 186,000 tons of kyanite.

The proximity of the kyanite deposit to a paved highway, to port facilities at Buchanan, and to water, electrical power, and timber resources are considered favorable factors relevant to possible development.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68258","usgsCitation":"Stanin, S.A., and Cooper, B.R., 1968, The Mt.
