The upper and lower aquifers are separated by a poorly permeable till-rich zone, which confines the water in the lower aquifer; recharge to the lower aquifer is by vertical leakage through the till zone. The upper aquifer is pumped extensively only at Rohrers Island well field of Dayton, where water levels are kept high by artificial recharge. Although few cities in Ohio are as abundantly endowed with ground-water resources as Dayton, the demand is estimated to rise to quantities that cannot be supplied by the year 2000. A comprehensive plan for conservation is needed to meet future growth.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1808","usgsCitation":"Norris, S.E., and Spieker, A.M., 1966, Ground-water resources of the Dayton area, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1808, Report: vii, 167 p.; 9 Plates: 40.00 × 38.75 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1808.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 167 p.; 9 Plates: 40.00 × 38.75 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":28388,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28387,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28383,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28382,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28381,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28380,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138961,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28386,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28385,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28384,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28389,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":397422,"rank":12,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25000.htm"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Ohio","city":"Dayton","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.658\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.067,\n              39.658\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.067,\n              39.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.658\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a051","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Norris, Stanley Eugene","contributorId":24772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Norris","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"Eugene","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spieker, Andrew Maute","contributorId":78716,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spieker","given":"Andrew","email":"","middleInitial":"Maute","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Surface water is hard and generally requires treatment, but is then suitable for municipal and most industrial uses. Pollution is only a local problem in the lakes and rivers, but algae are present in most of the lakes. Ground water in Winnebago County is hard to very hard, and dissolved iron is a problem in a large area of the county. A saline-water zone borders the eastern edge of the county and underlies the areas of concentrated pumpage at Neenah-Menasha and Oshkosh. \r\n\r\nA thick, southeastward-dipping sandstone aquifer, yielding as much as 1,000 gallons per minute to municipal and industrial wells, underlies Winnebago County. A dolomite aquifer in the eastern and southern part of the county yields as much as 50 gallons per minute to wells. Sand and gravel layers and lenses in preglacial bedrock channels, in northwestern Winnebago County and in the upper Fox River valley, yield as much as 50 gallons per minute to wells. Present water problems in the county include algae and local pollution in the Lake Winnebago Pool, iron in water from the sandstone aquifer, and saline ground Water in the eastern part of the county. Potential problems include rapid decline of water levels because of interference between closely spaced wells, migration of saline ground water toward areas of pumping, surface-water pollution from inadequate sewage and industrial-waste process plants, and ground-water pollution in dolomite formations. \r\n\r\nDevelopment of the water resources of the county should follow a comprehensive plan which takes into consideration all aspects of water use. Dispersal of wells, especially extending toward the west from the heavily pumped Neenah-Menasha and Oshkosh areas, is recommended to reduce water-level declines and to avoid saline water. Supplemental use of ground water is recmmended for municipal expansion of water facilities and to reduce the algae treatment problem of water from the Lake Winnebago Pool.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. The uppermost bedrock in the basin is limestone and shale of Permian age and sandstone, shale, and limestone of Cretaceous age. Bedrock is exposed in many places in the lower one-third of the basin but elsewhere is buried beneath a thin to thick mantle of younger sediments, mostly of Quaternary age. These younger sediments are largely fluvial and eolian deposits but also include some glacial till. Consisting in large part of sand and gravel, the fluvial deposits are an important source of ground-water supplies throughout much of the upper two-thirds of the basin. Loess, an eolian deposit of clayey silt, is by far the most widespread surficial deposit. The climate is continental. Temperatures ranging from -38 ? F to 118 ? F have been recorded in the basin. Average annual precipitation as low as 10.31 and as high as 49.32 inches has been recorded. During most years in the period 1956-62, when nearly all the water-quality data were obtained, annual precipitation and annual runoff were greater than normal. Flow-duration data indicate, however, that the flow distribution for the period was near normal. The Little Blue River has the same suspended-sediment characteristics as nearly all unregulated streams in the Great Plains--a wide range in concentrations, low concentrations during low-flow periods, and high concentrations during almost all periods of significant overland runoff. The maximum instantaneous concentration normally occurs many hours before maximum water discharge during any given rise in stage; the maximum daily mean concentration during any given year normally occurs at a moderate stream stage, not during a major flood. \r\n\r\nSuspended-sediment data for Little Blue River near Deweese, Nebr., which receives drainage from the upstream third of the basin, approximately, show that during the 1!}57-61 water years concentrations of 100 ppm (parts per million) or less prevailed about 42 percent of the time and concentrations of 1,000 ppm or less prevailed about 85 percent of the time. Observed concentrations ranged from 2 to 21,000 ppm: daily mean concentrations ranged from 2 to 13,800 ppm.\r\n\r\nThe discharge-weighted suspended-sediment concentration was computed as about 2,800 ppm at Little Blue River near Deweese, about 3,300 ppm near Fairbury (Endicott), and about 3,000 ppm at Waterville. These stations receive drainage from about one-third, two-thirds, and nearly all the basin, respectively. Water-utilization problems resulting from high concentrations are not significant in the basin ; use of water from the Little Blue River is quantitatively negligible. Concentrations and, consequently, discharges of sediment are greater at a given water discharge on a rising stage than at the same discharge on the falling stage of the same runoff event. Also, a wide range in sediment discharge occurs at similar water discharges during different runoff events. Daily sediment discharges at Little Blue River near Deweese ranged from about 1,400 to 16,000 tons at daily mean water discharges of about 500 cfs (cubic feet per second) and from almost 7,500 to 28,000 tons at water discharges of about 1,000 cfs. \r\n\r\nThe estimated long-term sediment discharge at Little Blue River near Deweese is about 400,000 tons per year: near Fairbury, about 1,200,000 tons per year: and at Waterville, about 1.900,000 tons per year. The high sediment discharge from the downstream part of the basin is due to greater precipitation and runoff--not to higher concentrations of suspended sediment--in the downstream parts of the basin. \r\n\r\nNearly all the suspended sediment is silt and clay. The streambed material is mainly medium sand to gravel. The median particle size of bed material observed was about 0.73 mm near Deweese and about 0.77 mm near Fairbury. A few computations of total sediment discharge of Little Blue River near Deweese indicate that suspended-sedim","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1819H","usgsCitation":"Mundorff, J.C., and Waddell, K., 1966, Fluvial sediment and chemical quality of water in the Little Blue River basin, Nebraska and Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1819, v, 45 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1819H.","productDescription":"v, 45 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137766,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819h/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28270,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819h/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de61f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mundorff, J. The report is an updating of the Cimarron Basin part of the report on the Arkansas, White, and Red River basins (Lohman and Burtis, 1953a) and includes more recently published data, as well as unpublished data in the files of the Geological Survey. These data are compiled by district offices of the Geological Survey in each State in cooperation with State and local agencies and with other Federal agencies. No new data were collected as a part of this investigation. The report is primarily a map presentation, and the text is intended mainly to clarify and supplement the maps and to make them more understandable and usable. The report also presents some of the ground-water problems--both present and potential--and suggests some partial solutions. As the maps and text are of necessity highly generalized, the reader is referred to the more detailed reports for more precise information.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr66159","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1966, Ground water in the Cimarron River basin: New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-159, Report: iii, 51 p.; 5 Plates: 35.62 × 21.82 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr66159.","productDescription":"Report: iii, 51 p.; 5 Plates: 35.62 × 21.82 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":185413,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":100617,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":100616,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":100615,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":100614,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":100613,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":100612,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0159/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408005,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52093.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Cimarron River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.1333,\n              35.55\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.2833,\n              35.55\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.2833,\n              37.8792\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.1333,\n              37.8792\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.1333,\n              35.55\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d797","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":533180,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Data on the composition, thickness, and regional distribution of glacial drift and bedrock materials were used to construct maps of: geologic materials to a depth of 20 ft; bedrock topography; drift thickness; major terrains; and glacial drift aquifers. Because contamination of aquifers is a serious concern in some areas of the two counties, a major focus of this study is on interpreting data critical to the selection of suitable areas for municipal waste disposal and prevention of contamination from existing municipal landfills and septic systems. Interpretive maps accompanying the text: (1) rate geological sequences on their capacity to protect aquifers and surface water from contamination by land burial of municipal wastes, septic system disposal, and surface spreading of wastes and agricultural chemicals; (2) geologic sequences on their suitability for general construction; and (3) delineate resources of sand, gravel, peat, and dolomite. Areas in which aquifer contamination from waste disposal and other land-use practices is most likely to occur are those in which sand and gravel and/or permeable creviced bedrock are at or near the surface. Areas having the lowest contamination potential are underlain by thick (20 ft or more) deposits of fine-grained glacial till. Areas most favorable for general construction are well-drained locations in major river valleys and terrace outwash plains; areas least favorable for construction are scattered throughout both counties on poorly drained land having low bearing capacities and on uplands and slopes in northwestern Winnebago County where the drift is thin over the bedrock. Extensive deposits of sand and gravel occur in the major bedrock valleys. Dolomite deposits underlie all the uplands of Winnebago County and most of Boone County, but extraction costs are prohibitive where overburden is thick. High-grade dolomite with relatively thin overburden is found in eastern Winnebago County and southwestern Boone County. This report presents maps, profiles, and flood-frequency relations developed from past flood experience on the Schuylkill River from Conshohocken to Philadelphia, Pa. The maps and profiles are used to define the areal extent and depth of flooding of the August 24, 1933, and August 19, 1955, floods. The flood of October 4, 1869, which is the greatest flood known on the lower Schuylkill River, is presented on the flood profile and on the ten cross sections. The area inundated by the 1869 flood is not defined because insufficient data are available and because hydrologic and hydraulic conditions have undoubtedly changed to such an extent that such a definition would have little present significance. The basic flood data were prepared to aid individuals, organizations, and governmental agencies in making sound decisions for the safe and economical development of the lower Schuylkill River valley. Recommendations for land use, or suggestions for limitations of land use, are not made in this report.</p><p>The responsibility for planning for the optimum land use in the flood plain and the implementation of flood-plain regulations to achieve such optimum use rests with the State and local interests. The preparation of this report was undertaken after consultation with representatives of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission and the Montgomery County Planning Commission who expressed the need for flood-plain information and their willingness to consider floodplain regulations.</p><p>The area covered by this report extends downstream along the Schuylkill River from Plymouth Dam in Conshohocken to the mouth of Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia. Flooding along Wissahickon Creek is not included in the report. The reach studied extends from 13.0 miles to 21.0 miles upstream from the river mouth. All river distances used in the report are river miles upstream from the mouth of the Schuylkill River as used by the Corps of Engineer, U.S. Army and by the U.S. Geological Survey (Bogart, 1960, p. 194). For the convenience of users a tabulation of river miles of selected points upstream from the mouth of the Schuylkill River is included at the end of this report (table 1).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr662","usgsCitation":"Alter, A.T., 1966, Extent and frequency of inundation of Schuylkill River flood plain from Conshohocken to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-2, vii, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr662.","productDescription":"vii, 49 p.","numberOfPages":"61","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":177744,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":330310,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0002/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Conshohocken, Philadelphia","otherGeospatial":"Schuylkill River","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8b05","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Alter, A. This ridge contains an important aquifer. An extensive electrical earth resistivity survey was conducted over the ridged-drift aquifer. Inversion of the resistivity data provided information concerning aquifer thickness and aquifer resistivity. This information, along with pump test data along the aquifer, indicated a direct and geometric relationship between aquifer resistivity and hydraulic conductivity. As a result, it was possible to better define the boundaries and water-producing capabilities of the aquifer. Sip,ce that time the systematic collection of streamflow data. has expanded. In 1915 the Texas Board of Water Engineers (now the Texas Water Development Board) entered into a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Geological Survey for the purpose of expanding the network of stream-gaging stations in Texas. Sites were selected for stream-gaging stations to obtain hydrologic data for water supply and flood control. Therefore, the stream-gaging stations were located principally on major streams. Today, after three-quarters of a century.of hydrologic data collection, peak discharge data on small streams are still deficient in Texas. The Geological Survey and the Texas Highway Department, therefore, have entered into a cooperative program to collect peak discharge data on small streams for the purpose of deriving flood-frequency data needed for the economical design of culverts and small bridges. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, Extensive land use and land-treatment changes have taken place in the 12.2-square-mile Corey Creek study basin, whereas such changes in the 10.2-square-mile Elk Run basin, which is adjacent to the northeast, have been relatively slight. Elk Run basin, which is topographically and hydrologically similar to Corey Creek basin, was used as an external control for the Corey Creek basin study. \r\n\r\nMultiple-regression analysis showed that of all the variables, runoff correlated most highly with the sediment yield of each basin. \r\n\r\nSurveys at selected cross-sections of the two streams indicated that most channel changes were in the banks rather than in the bed. At points where the stream channel slope was greater than 70 feet per mile, the average annual change in cross-sectional area at the measured ranges was less than +--2.5 square feet. Filling of the stream channel occurred where the slope was 70 feet per mile or less, and such filling was greater in Corey Creek than in Elk Run. \r\n\r\nTrend analyses of data from both basins indicated no persistent changers in quantity of runoff, precipitation, or runoff intensity (peakedness), although similar analyses indicated significant changes in the rate of suspended-sediment discharge from both basins. During the period September 1957 to September 1960, sediment discharge from Corey Creek basin decreased by 11 percent relative to the sediment discharge from Elk Run. All, or most, of this decrease was the result of a decrease in sediment discharge during the May to October growing seasons. No significant trends were detected in data collected d-ring the November to April dormant season. \r\n\r\nA factor, termed the relative erosion potential, was formulated for evaluating the effects of changes in the hydrologic cover conditions. This factor was adjusted for- the effects of diversion terrace construction in the Corey Creek basin. A rank correlation test of the adjusted relative erosion potential versus the growing season Corey Creek-Elk Run suspended-sediment discharge ratio resulted in a correlation coefficient, r=0.71, significant at the 3 percent level. The least-squares regression equation derived from the .same data. was Y=0.276 X - 6.89. \r\n\r\nwhere Y was the Corey Creek-Elk Run sediment-discharge ratio and X was the adjusted relative erosion potential. The correlation coefficient was 0.65. significant at the 12 percent level. Standard error of estimate was 0.44. or about ?20 percent of the observed variation in the sediment-discharge ratio.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1532C","usgsCitation":"Jones, B.L., 1966, Effects of agricultural conservation practices on the hydrology of Corey Creek basin, Pennsylvania, 1954-60: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1532, v, 55 p. :ill. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1532C.","productDescription":"v, 55 p. :ill. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27395,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1532c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138483,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1532c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624b61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Benjamin L.","contributorId":78313,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Benjamin","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144491,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Chloride analysis of water extracted by these methods, chloride analyses of water from wells, and the interpretation of electric logs helped to define the chloride content of the salty water. New concepts of environmental-water head and zerovels, developed during the investigation, proved useful for defining hydraulic gradients and ratee of flow in ground water of variable density in a vertical direction and in horizontal and inclined planes, respectively. Hydraulic gradients in and between fresh and salty water were determined from water levels from data at individual and multiple-observation wells. \r\n\r\nSalty ground water occurs in southern Nassau and southeastern Queens Counties as three wedgelike extensions that project landward in unconsolidated deposits from a main body of salty water that lies seaward of the barrier beaches in Nassau County and of Jamaica Bay in Queens County. Salty water occurs not only in permeable deposits but also in the shallow and deep clay deposits. The highest chloride content of the salty ground water in the main body and the wedges is about 16,000 ppm, which is about 1,000 to 2,000 ppm less than the chloride content of ocean water. \r\n\r\nThe shallow salty water in the Pleistocene and Recent deposits is connected freely with the bays, tidal estuaries, and ocean. The intermediate wedge is found only in the southwestern part of Nassau County in the upper part of the Magothy (?) Formation, in the Jamneco Gravel, and in the overlying clay deposits. It extends from the seaward areas inland about 2 miles into Island Park. The deep wedge extends into southeastern Queens County and southern Nassau County principally in the deeper parts of the Magothy (?) Formation and in the underlying clay member of the Raritan Formation. The leading edge of the deep wedge is at the base of the Magothy (?) Formation. This edge is apparently at the shoreline east of Lido Beach and extends inland about 4 miles to Woodmere and about 7 miles to South Ozone Park. Zones of diffusion as much as 6 miles wide and about 500 feet thick were delineated in the frontal part of the salty-water wedges. These thick and broad zones of diffusion were probably formed during the past 1,000 or more years in heterogeneous unconsolidated deposits by long- and short-term changes in sea level and in fresh-water outflow to the sea and by dispersion caused by the movements of the water and its salt mass. Changes in sea level and fresh-water outflow together produced appreciable advances and recessions of the salt-water front. The chemical compositions of the diffused water in all wedges are modified to some extent by base exchange and other physical and chemical processes and also by diffusion. \r\n\r\nThe intermediate wedge of salty water is moving landward at a rate of less than 20 feet a year in the vicinity of Island Park and, thus, has moved less than 1,000 feet since 1900. The leading edge of the deep wedge has advanced landward at about 300 feet a :ear in Woodmere in southwestern Nassau County and about 160 feet a year at South Ozone Park in southeastern Queens County, principally under the influence of local withdrawals near the toe of the wedge. Between Hewlett and Lido Beach, the deep wedge is moving inland at the rate of about 10 feet a year under the influence of regional withdrawals in inland areas. Regional encroachment of the deep wedge is apparently retarded appreciably by cyclic flow, that is, by the return seaward in the upper","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1613F","usgsCitation":"Lusczynski, N., and Swarzenski, W.V., 1966, Salt-water encroachment in southern Nassau and southeastern Queens Counties, Long Island, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1613, iv, 76 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1613F.","productDescription":"iv, 76 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138239,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27807,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27808,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27809,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27810,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27811,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27812,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1613f/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66c894","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lusczynski, N.J.","contributorId":10779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lusczynski","given":"N.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144787,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Swarzenski, Wolfgang V.","contributorId":30213,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swarzenski","given":"Wolfgang","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144788,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
