About 100 square miles of alluvial-fan deposits in western Fresno County, California, have been affected by manmade near-surface subsidence within the past few decades. Subsidence of 3-5 feet is common and 10-15 feet of subsidence has occurred within small areas. Oren cracks form between areas undergoing different amounts of settlement, and are a characteristic feature of compaction due to wetting. Differential settlement occurring within short distances has destroyed or damaged ditches, canals, roads, pipelines, electric-transmission towers, and buildings, and has made the irrigation of crops difficult. The areas of known near-surface subsidence along the alinement of the San Luis Canal-California Aqueduct were compacted by ponding before construction of the canal.

The 11 miles of canal alinement that cross the fan of Panoche Creek were not ponded before construction. ,Although a few reports of local residents to the California Department of Water Resources indicated that some very small areas of settlement had occurred after irrigation, it was generally considered that the fan would not be susceptible to widespread near-surface subsidence. The irrigated fields did not show the pronounced hummocky relief and subsidence hollows that were typical of the areas of known near-surface subsidence. Nit as strong was the evidence from core holes that showed that the deposits, even in areas that had never been irrigated, were roughly at field capacity instead of being moisture deficient. This seemed logical because Panoche Creek had been observed to flow for 1-5 months during years of heavy rainfall, in contrast to the ephemeral flow of streams on the Moreno Gulch fan to the northwest and on the Tumey Gulch fan to the south. It was assumed that if similar flows had occurred in the past, the deposits would have been wetted thoroughly from the land surface to the water table with each major period of flow and deposition.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6613","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Bull, W.B., 1966, Appraisal of near-surface subsidence on the Panoche Creek fan, Fresno County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-13, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6613.","productDescription":"44 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177836,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":360144,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Fresno County","otherGeospatial":"Panoche Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.4,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.4,\n              36.8\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.8\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a3a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bull, William B.","contributorId":8919,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bull","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245500,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of this report is to present the average or most probable temperatures of surface waters in the conterminous United States and to cite factors that affect and are affected by water temperature. Temperature is related, usually directly, to all the chemical, physical, and biological properties of water. The ability of water to dissolve or precipitate materials is temperature dependent, the ability of water to transport or deposit suspended material is temperature dependent, and the aquatic life of a lake or stream may thrive or die because of the water temperature.

Everyone is concerned, though often unknowingly, about water temperature. The amount and type of treatment necessary for a municipal supply are temperature dependent; therefore it affects the consumer cost. Temperature determines the volume of cooling water needed for industrial processes and steampower generation. Conservation and recreation practices are affected by water temperature, and the farmers' irrigation practices and livestock production may be affected by the water temperature.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/ha235","usgsCitation":"Blakey, J.F., 1966, Temperature of surface When the discharge at Trenton is less than these critical values, salinity is very sensitive to change in discharge, so that a relatively small decrease in fresh-water discharge results in a relatively great increase in salinity. Comparison of the discharge-salinity relations observed for the 14-year period August 1949-December 1963 with relations proposed by other workers but based on other time periods indicate that such relations change with time and that salinity is affected not only by discharge but also by dredging; construction of breakwater, dikes, and tidal barriers; changing sea level; tidal elevation; tidal range; and wind intensity and direction.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1586G","usgsCitation":"Keighton, W.B., 1966, Fresh-water discharge salinity relations in the tidal Delaware River: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1586, 16 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1586G.","productDescription":"16 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27485,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586g/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137597,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586g/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keighton, Walter B.","contributorId":81877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keighton","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144536,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The defined relations will be useful for the design of culverts and other hydraulic structures. The relations are expressed in terms of basin characteristics.

Peakflow records at 95 sites in Kansas for an 8-year period provided the basic data. The records were analyzed with respect to 20 basin characteristics by multiple-regression techniques. The resulting formulas relate flood magnitude and frequency to size of contributing drainage area, an index of stream-bed slope, and the average number of days per year when rainfall exceeded 1.0 inch. The other 17 factors had no statistical significance.

To illustrate a typical application of the flood-frequency relation, a step-bystep method is presented for computing a frequency curve for Rock Creek near Meriden, Kans. The frequency curve shows that a peak discharge of 3,620 cfs (cubic feet per second) can be expected once every 10 years on the average, and that the 67 percent confidence interval ranges from 1,820 cfs to 7,230 cfs. The large range results from the fact that only 8 years of record have been collected and emphasizes the need for collecting records for a longer period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Many of the acids color the water yellow to brown; however, not all of the acids are colored. These acids range from simple to complex, but predominantly they are nonvolatile polymeric carboxylic acids. \r\n\r\nThe organic acids were recovered from the water by two techniques: continuous liquid-liquid extraction with n-butanol and vacuum evaporation at 50?C (centigrade). The isolated acids were studied by techniques of gas, paper, and column chromatography and infrared spectroscopy. \r\n\r\nAbout 10 percent of the acids recovered were volatile or could be made volatile for gas chromatographic analysis. Approximately 30 of these carboxylic acids were isolated, and 13 of them were individually identified. The predominant part of the total acids could not be made volatile for gas chromatographic analysis. Infrared examination of many column chromatographic fractions indicated that these nonvolatile substances are primarily polymeric hydroxy carboxylic acids having aromatic and olefinic unsaturation. The upper and lower aquifers are separated by a poorly permeable till-rich zone, which confines the water in the lower aquifer; recharge to the lower aquifer is by vertical leakage through the till zone. The upper aquifer is pumped extensively only at Rohrers Island well field of Dayton, where water levels are kept high by artificial recharge. Although few cities in Ohio are as abundantly endowed with ground-water resources as Dayton, the demand is estimated to rise to quantities that cannot be supplied by the year 2000. A comprehensive plan for conservation is needed to meet future growth.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1808","usgsCitation":"Norris, S.E., and Spieker, A.M., 1966, Ground-water resources of the Dayton area, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1808, Report: vii, 167 p.; 9 Plates: 40.00 × 38.75 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1808.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 167 p.; 9 Plates: 40.00 × 38.75 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":28388,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28387,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28383,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28382,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28381,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28380,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138961,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":28386,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28385,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28384,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":28389,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1808/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":397422,"rank":12,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25000.htm"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Ohio","city":"Dayton","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.658\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.067,\n              39.658\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.067,\n              39.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.85\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.292,\n              39.658\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a051","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Norris, Stanley Eugene","contributorId":24772,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Norris","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"Eugene","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spieker, Andrew Maute","contributorId":78716,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spieker","given":"Andrew","email":"","middleInitial":"Maute","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

(Aramco) began in 1933. By 1959, exploration parties of one type or another had surveyed more than 1,300,000 square kilometers (500,000 square miles) of sedimentary outcrop.

The foundation for sedimentary deposition is the Arabian Shield a vast Precambrian complex of igneous and metamorphic rocks that occupies roughly one-third of the Arabian Peninsula in the west and crops out sporadically along the southern coast. Since the outset of the Paleozoic Era the shield has been amazingly stable, subject only to gentle, epeirogenic movement. On this rigid land mass was deposited an aggregate total of nearly 5,500 meters (18,000 feet) of sedimentary rocks ranging in age from presumed Cambrian to Pliocene(?).

Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and lower Tertiary strata are magnificently exposed in central Arabia where they crop out in a great curved belt bordering the shield. Here the landscape is dominated by a series of essentially parallel west-facing escarpments, each supported by a resistant limestone cap. Exposures are unusually good, and many rock units can be traced without significant interruption for 500 to nearly 1,000 km. Beds reflecting buried basement configuration dip gently and uniformly away from the escarpment region into the Persian Gulf and Rub' al Khali basins.

East of the escarpment belt is a broad expanse of relatively low-relief terrain in which Tertiary and younger deposits effectively mask older units. Clues to the character of pre-Tertiary rocks in this large area, which includes the Rub' al Khali desert and most of northeastern Arabia, are afforded only by widely scattered bore holes and oil wells.

In extreme northwestern Arabia, largely lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are exposed, although a basinal area bordering the Paleozoic rocks on the north is characterized by thick Upper Cretaceous to Tertiary strata. Tertiary to Recent volcanic rocks cover substantial parts of the area.

In general the older sedimentary rocks are exposed in north-central and northwestern Arabia near the Precambrian basement where as much as 2,000 m of lower Paleozoic rocks are present. Although unfossiliferous, the lower 600 m can be equated, at least in part, to rocks of certain Cambrian age in Jordan. Higher beds contain intervals confidently dated as Lower Ordovician, Silurian, and Lower Devonian. Lower Paleozoic rocks are chiefly coarse-grained sandstone of terrestrial origin, although marine shale occurs at several levels and the upper 300 m is mainly shale with thin beds of limestone.

Lower Paleozoic strata are succeeded in the central escarpment region by a thick sequence (about 1,000 m) of Upper Permian and Triassic sedimentary rocks. The initial deposit, the Khuff Formation, is mostly shallow-water limestone; overlying beds are nonmarine elastics except for thick carbonate units in the middle part of the section.

Above the Triassic System is some 200 to 500 m of Lower and Middle Jurassic rocks which, near the middle of the escarpment region, are interbedded marine shale and shelf limestone. These grade to sandstone, in part continental, in the northern and southern areas of outcrop. The Middle Jurassic is overlain by a great sequence-of nearly pure carbonate rocks, highly fossiliferous and accurately dated as Upper Jurassic and early Lower Cretaceous.

The Jurassic System is spectacularly displayed in central Arabia where it forms the backbone of the escarpment region the Tuwayq Mountains. Carbonate sedimentation was interrupted several times in the closing stages of the Jurassic b^ the onset of evaporite conditions which gave rise to cyclic deposits of anhydrite and calcarenite. The resulting sequence the Arab Formation is of prime importance for its porous carbonate members contain billions of barrels of proved oil reserves

The carbonate sequence is succeeded by a thick body of late Lower and Middle Cretaceous sandstone. (The Middle Cretaceous Series and Epoch, as defined by European geologist-, are used in this report.) Late Lower Cretaceous rocks are nonmarine and appear only in the middle and southern parts of the escarpment region. Middle Cretaceous rocks, nonmarine in the south, become progressively more marine in the north where they follow a transgressive path northwest across older beds as far as Jordan.

Upper Cretaceous and Eocene rocks, almost exclusively in limestone and dolomite facies, are extensively exposed alorc the eastern edge of the escarpment belt and continue northwest into Iraq. The sequence, with an average thickness of about 5^0 m, includes rocks of Upper Cretaceous, Paleocene, lower Eocene, and middle Eocene ages.

The stratigraphic sequence above the Eocene consists of 200 to 600 m of Miocene and Pliocene rocks, mostly of nonmarine origin. These deposits a heterogeneous assemblage of marly sandstone, sandy marl, and sandy limestone blanket the Rub' al Khali and northeastern Arabia.

Above the Miocene and Pliocene rocks are unconsolidated Quaternary deposits which comprise great sand deserts and widespread gravel sheets. Sand of the Rub' al Khali Desert alone covers about 600,000 sq km (230,000 sq mi) or most of southern Arabia.

Two major structural provinces are recognized within the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent areas. One is the comparatively stable interior region whose rigidity is controlled by the Precambrian basement. The other is the great mobile belt of Taurus, Zagros, and Oman Mountains, bordering the stable region on the north and east. Saudi Arabia falls entirely within the stable region.

The interior stable region contains the Arabian shield as well as the Arabian Shelf an extension of the basement thinly veneered with little-disturbed sedimentary rocks. Widespread structural events, presumably related to epeirogenic movement within the basement, have divided the Arabian Shelf into several distinct and significant structural elements the Interior Homocline, the Interior Platform, and several basinal areas.

Bordering the shield is a great belt of sedimentary rocks whose dip basinward is so slight and uniform as to be impreceptible to the eye. This Interior Homocline has an average width of about 400 km and a persistent dip varying from slightly more than 1°00' in older units to less than 0°30' in the youngest. One structural feature of the homocline the central Arabian arch has greatly influenced the present surface distribution of sedimentary rocks in the interior escarpment region. The arch, which affects all rocks from the basement up, marks the area of maximum curvature of the homocline in central Arabia. Although the arch has a varied history, it is apparently a residual high between the periodically sinking Persian Gulf and Rub' al Khali basins rather than a true independent positive feature. Support for this concept conies from the presence of a great arc of tensional structures the central Arabian graben and trough system near the crest of the arch and along the hinge line between the Persian Gulf basin and the stable western block.

Bordering the homocline is the Interior Platform, a remarkably flat area of varying width in which systematic dip off the crystalline core no longer prevails. Superimposed on the platform are several major north-south anticlinal trends which include the great oil fields of Arabia

Adjacent to the platform are several basinal areas that have from time to time received thick sedimentary deposits. Such basinal sags have developed on the shelf in the northeastern Rub' al Khali, northern Persian Gulf, Dibdibah and Sirhan-Turayf areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp560D","usgsCitation":"Powers, R., Ramirez, L.F., Redmond, C., and Elberg, E., 1966, Geology of the Arabian Peninsula: Sedimentary geology of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 560, p. The main areas of highly mineralized water are near Casa Grande and near Coolidge. Striking differences have been noted in the quality of water from different depths in the same well. Water from one well, (D-6-7) 25cdd, showed an increase in chloride content from 248 ppm (parts per million) at 350 feet below the land surface to 6,580 ppm at 375 feet; the concentration of chloride increased to 10,400 ppm at 550 feet below the land surface. This change was accompanied by an increase in the total dissolved solids as indicated by conductivity measurements. The change in water quality can be correlated with sediment types. The upper and lower sand and gravel units seem to yield water of better quality than the intermediate silt and clay unit. In places the silt and clay unit contains zones of gypsum and common table salt. These zones yield water that contains large amounts of the dissolved minerals usually associated with water from playa deposits. \r\n\r\nHighly mineralized ground water in an area near Casa Grande has moved southward and westward as much as 4 miles. Similar water near Coolidge has moved a lesser distance. \r\n\r\nGood management practices and proper use of soil amendments have made possible the use of water that is high in salinity and alkali hazard for agricultural purposes in western Pinal County. \r\n\r\nThe fluoride content of the ground water in western Pinal County is usually low; however, water from wells that penetrate either the bedrock or unconsolidated sediments that contain certain volcanic rocks may have as much as 9 ppm of fluoride.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Surface water is hard and generally requires treatment, but is then suitable for municipal and most industrial uses. Pollution is only a local problem in the lakes and rivers, but algae are present in most of the lakes. Ground water in Winnebago County is hard to very hard, and dissolved iron is a problem in a large area of the county. A saline-water zone borders the eastern edge of the county and underlies the areas of concentrated pumpage at Neenah-Menasha and Oshkosh. \r\n\r\nA thick, southeastward-dipping sandstone aquifer, yielding as much as 1,000 gallons per minute to municipal and industrial wells, underlies Winnebago County. A dolomite aquifer in the eastern and southern part of the county yields as much as 50 gallons per minute to wells. Sand and gravel layers and lenses in preglacial bedrock channels, in northwestern Winnebago County and in the upper Fox River valley, yield as much as 50 gallons per minute to wells. Present water problems in the county include algae and local pollution in the Lake Winnebago Pool, iron in water from the sandstone aquifer, and saline ground Water in the eastern part of the county. Potential problems include rapid decline of water levels because of interference between closely spaced wells, migration of saline ground water toward areas of pumping, surface-water pollution from inadequate sewage and industrial-waste process plants, and ground-water pollution in dolomite formations. \r\n\r\nDevelopment of the water resources of the county should follow a comprehensive plan which takes into consideration all aspects of water use. Dispersal of wells, especially extending toward the west from the heavily pumped Neenah-Menasha and Oshkosh areas, is recommended to reduce water-level declines and to avoid saline water. Supplemental use of ground water is recmmended for municipal expansion of water facilities and to reduce the algae treatment problem of water from the Lake Winnebago Pool.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. Many hydrologic data that aided water users in the past can be applied to present water problems and will be helpful for solving many similar problems in the future. Most of the water problems of Louisville, a water-rich area, concern management and are associated with the distribution of supplies, the quality of water, drainage, and waste disposal. \r\n\r\nThe local hydrologic system at Louisville is dominated by the Ohio River and the glacial-outwash deposits beneath its flood plain. The water-bearing limestones in the uplands are ,secondary sources of water. The average flow of the Ohio River at Louisville, 73 billion gallons per day, and the potential availability of 370 million gallons per day of ground water suitable for industrial cooling purposes minimize the chance of acute water shortage in the area. Under current development, use of water averages about 211 million gallons per day, excluding about 392 million gallons of Ohio River water circulated daily through steampower plants and returned directly to the river. Optimum use and control of the water resources will be dependent on solving several water problems. The principal sources of water are in the Ohio River bottom land, whereas the new and potential centers of use are in the uplands. Either water must be piped to these new centers from the present sources or new supplies must be developed. Available data on streamflow and ground water are adequate to plan for the development of small local supplies. \r\n\r\nSince the completion of floodwalls and levees in 1953, widespread damage from flooding is a thing of the past in the Louisville area. Some local flooding of unprotected areas and of lowlands along tributary streams still takes place. The analyses of streamflow data are useful in planning for protection of these areas, but additional streamflow records and flood-area mapping are needed to best solve the problem. Droughts are a problem only to users of small water supplies in the uplands, where additional water either can be imported or developed locally. \r\n\r\nPollution and undesirable chemical quality of water for some uses are the most serious drawbacks to the optimum development of the water resources in Louisville and Jefferson County. Available chemical analyses of ground water are useful for determining its suitability for various uses, but additional data are needed to guide management decisions. Sources of contamination should be inventoried and water samples analyzed periodically to monitor changes in quality.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to the hydrology of the United States, 1965","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1819C","usgsCitation":"Bell, E.A., 1966, Summary of hydrologic conditions of the Louisville area, Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1819, Report: iv, 36 p.; 6 Plates: 37.50 × 19.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1819C.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 36 p.; 6 Plates: 37.50 × 19.00 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":392337,"rank":9,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25021.htm"},{"id":25615,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25614,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25616,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25613,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25612,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25611,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25610,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137994,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1819c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky","city":"Louisville","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -85.87188720703125,\n              38.005902055387054\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.51071166992188,\n              38.005902055387054\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.51071166992188,\n              38.35350340353833\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.87188720703125,\n              38.35350340353833\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.87188720703125,\n              38.005902055387054\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69905c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bell, Edwin Allen","contributorId":84340,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bell","given":"Edwin","email":"","middleInitial":"Allen","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143021,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is drained by the Pawcatuck River and its two major tributaries, the Usquepaug-Queen River and the Chipuxet River. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of the water budget for the basin shows that approximately 94 mgd (million gallons per day) or about 63 percent of the precipitation flows out of the basin as streamflow. Of this amount, about 66 mgd is from ground-water seepage. \r\n\r\nTwo ground-water reservoirs composed of glacial deposits of sand and gravel and capable of substantial yields are in the basin. The larger reservoir underlies the central part of the Usquepaug-Queen River valley. This reservoir ranges in width from 3,000 to 4,000 feet and is 32,000 feet long. A large part of the reservoir contains sand and gravel more than 100 feet thick, having a permeability of more than 1,000 gallons per day per square foot. The yield of this reservoir is estimated to be about 17 mgd. \r\n\r\nThe smaller ground-water reservoir is in the Chipuxet River valley. It is about 4,000 feet wide and 16,000 feet long. A large part of this reservoir contains sand and gravel more than 150 feet thick having a permeability of more than 1,000 gallons per day per square foot. The yield of the Chipuxet reservoir is estimated to be about 8.6 mgd. \r\n\r\nMineral content of water from both of the reservoirs is generally less than 200 parts per million of dissolved solids. However, in the Chipuxet groundwater reservoir the dissolved solids are somewhat higher, and the iron content is a problem. \r\n\r\nOnly about 1.5 mgd of water is used in the basin. Most of it is used for public supplies and is obtained from wells not tapping the Usquepaug-Queen or Chipuxet ground-water reservoirs. Estimates of the 25 mgd of ground water potentially available are believed to be conservative, and substantially larger quantities may actually be available when development takes place.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1821","usgsCitation":"Allen, W.B., Hahn, G.W., and Brackley, R.A., 1966, Availability of ground water upper Pawcatuck River basin Rhode Island: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1821, Report: v, 66 p.; 3 Plates: 23.50 × 45.32 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1821.","productDescription":"Report: v, 66 p.; 3 Plates: 23.50 × 45.32 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":25415,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1821/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25414,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1821/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25413,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1821/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25412,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1821/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137202,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1821/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":395917,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25029.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"Rhode Island","otherGeospatial":"upper Pawcatuck River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.633,\n              41.408\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.488,\n              41.408\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.488,\n              41.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.633,\n              41.625\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.633,\n              41.408\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d5ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Allen, William Burrows","contributorId":13596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Allen","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Burrows","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142886,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hahn, Glenn Walter","contributorId":75899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hahn","given":"Glenn","email":"","middleInitial":"Walter","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Brackley, Richard A.","contributorId":61792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brackley","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142887,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
