As in previous years the purpose of the volume is to make available promptly to the public the highlights of Survey investigations. This year the volume consists of 4 chapters (A through D) of Professional Paper 550. Chapter A contains a summary of significant results, and the remaining chapters are made up of collections of short technical papers.\r\n\r\nMany of the results summarized in chapter A are discussed in greater detail in the short papers or in reports listed in 'Publications in Fiscal Year 1966,' beginning on page A265. The tables of contents for chapters B through D are listed on pages A259-A264.\r\n\r\nNumerous Federal, State, county, and municipal agencies listed on pages A211-A215 cooperated financially with the Geological Survey during fiscal 1966 and have contributed significantly to the results reported here. They are identified where appropriate in the short technical papers that have appeared in Geological Survey Research and in papers published cooperatively, but generally are not identified in the brief statements in chapter A.\r\n\r\nMany individuals on the staff of the Geological Survey have contributed to 'Geological Survey Research 1966.' Reference is made to only a few. Frank W. Trainer, Water Resources Division, was responsible for organizing and assembling chapter A and for critical review of papers in chapters B-D, assisted by Louis Pavlides, Geologic Division. Marston S. Chase, Publications Division, was in charge of production aspects of the series, assisted by Jesse R. Upperco in technical editing, and William H. Elliott and James R. Hamilton in planning and preparing illustrations.\r\n\r\nThe volume for next year, 'Geological Survey Research 1967,' will be published as chapters af Professional Paper 5715. A large residential area and the city airport are separated from downtown Des Moines by the Raccoon River (fig. 1). The hydrologic inventory presents gains or accretions to the water supply, as inflow, equated with loss by water demands, as outflow. The difference is the ground-water storage change. Items of inflow include precipitation, surface and subsurface inflow, irrigation return, and sewage effluent. Items of outflow include surface and subsurface outflow, evapotranspiration, and water pumped for irrigation and other uses. \r\n\r\nGround-water storage changes occurred as depletions of the shallow water body beneath the eastern and central parts of the Lompoc plain and beneath the upland part of the Lompoc subarea to the north and east. The estimated annual depletion of storage averaged 3,000 acre-feet. \r\n\r\nA near balance between inflow and outflow is indicated by a calculated difference of 5,000 acre-feet of accretion and an observed depletion of ground water in storage of about 3,000 acre-feet. The difference of 8,000 acre-feet between the two values, considering the magnitude of total inflow and outflow--110,000 and 105,000 acre-feet, is not significant. For the period of inventory, more water was discharged from the basin by flow in the Santa Ynez River than by pumping from wells. \r\n\r\nThe near balance between inflow and outflow for a period of near-average climatic conditions, in general, substantiates a previous estimate that perennial pumpage is as much as about 20,000 acre-feet. However, water in storage will be depleted if the progressive change in the ratio of irrigation pumpage to other pumpage continues. Even though the hydrologic balance is maintained, changes in chemical quality of the ground water, due to recycling of irrigation water and inflow of poor-quality connate water from the consolidated rocks, indicate that chemical equilibrium has not been reached. Perennial supply under the 1957-62 conditions of inventory is estimated to be between 24,000 and 26,000 acre-feet.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6642","usgsCitation":"Evenson, R.E., 1966, Hydrologic inventory of the Lompoc subarea, Santa Ynez River basin, Santa Barbara County, California, 1957-62: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-42, Report: iv, 27 p.; 1 Plate: 30.86 × 18.94 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6642.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 27 p.; 1 Plate: 30.86 × 18.94 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110342,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52174.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"52174"},{"id":86949,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0042/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86948,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0042/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":173956,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0042/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Santa Ynez River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.66284179687499,\n 34.57895241036948\n ],\n [\n -120.3387451171875,\n 34.57895241036948\n ],\n [\n -120.3387451171875,\n 34.70549341022544\n ],\n [\n -120.66284179687499,\n 34.70549341022544\n ],\n [\n -120.66284179687499,\n 34.57895241036948\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a498c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Evenson, R. Sip,ce that time the systematic collection of streamflow data. has expanded. In 1915 the Texas Board of Water Engineers (now the Texas Water Development Board) entered into a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Geological Survey for the purpose of expanding the network of stream-gaging stations in Texas. Sites were selected for stream-gaging stations to obtain hydrologic data for water supply and flood control. Therefore, the stream-gaging stations were located principally on major streams. Today, after three-quarters of a century.of hydrologic data collection, peak discharge data on small streams are still deficient in Texas. The Geological Survey and the Texas Highway Department, therefore, have entered into a cooperative program to collect peak discharge data on small streams for the purpose of deriving flood-frequency data needed for the economical design of culverts and small bridges.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, About 100 square miles of alluvial-fan deposits in western Fresno County, California, have been affected by manmade near-surface subsidence within the past few decades. Subsidence of 3-5 feet is common and 10-15 feet of subsidence has occurred within small areas. Oren cracks form between areas undergoing different amounts of settlement, and are a characteristic feature of compaction due to wetting. Differential settlement occurring within short distances has destroyed or damaged ditches, canals, roads, pipelines, electric-transmission towers, and buildings, and has made the irrigation of crops difficult. The areas of known near-surface subsidence along the alinement of the San Luis Canal-California Aqueduct were compacted by ponding before construction of the canal.

The 11 miles of canal alinement that cross the fan of Panoche Creek were not ponded before construction. ,Although a few reports of local residents to the California Department of Water Resources indicated that some very small areas of settlement had occurred after irrigation, it was generally considered that the fan would not be susceptible to widespread near-surface subsidence. The irrigated fields did not show the pronounced hummocky relief and subsidence hollows that were typical of the areas of known near-surface subsidence. Nit as strong was the evidence from core holes that showed that the deposits, even in areas that had never been irrigated, were roughly at field capacity instead of being moisture deficient. This seemed logical because Panoche Creek had been observed to flow for 1-5 months during years of heavy rainfall, in contrast to the ephemeral flow of streams on the Moreno Gulch fan to the northwest and on the Tumey Gulch fan to the south. It was assumed that if similar flows had occurred in the past, the deposits would have been wetted thoroughly from the land surface to the water table with each major period of flow and deposition.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6613","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Bull, W.B., 1966, Appraisal of near-surface subsidence on the Panoche Creek fan, Fresno County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-13, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6613.","productDescription":"44 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177836,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":360144,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Fresno County","otherGeospatial":"Panoche Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.4,\n              36.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.4,\n              36.8\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.8\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75,\n              36.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a3a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bull, William B.","contributorId":8919,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bull","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245500,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report presents maps, profiles, and flood-frequency relations developed from past flood experience on the Schuylkill River from Conshohocken to Philadelphia, Pa. The maps and profiles are used to define the areal extent and depth of flooding of the August 24, 1933, and August 19, 1955, floods. The flood of October 4, 1869, which is the greatest flood known on the lower Schuylkill River, is presented on the flood profile and on the ten cross sections. The area inundated by the 1869 flood is not defined because insufficient data are available and because hydrologic and hydraulic conditions have undoubtedly changed to such an extent that such a definition would have little present significance. The basic flood data were prepared to aid individuals, organizations, and governmental agencies in making sound decisions for the safe and economical development of the lower Schuylkill River valley. Recommendations for land use, or suggestions for limitations of land use, are not made in this report.

The responsibility for planning for the optimum land use in the flood plain and the implementation of flood-plain regulations to achieve such optimum use rests with the State and local interests. The preparation of this report was undertaken after consultation with representatives of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission and the Montgomery County Planning Commission who expressed the need for flood-plain information and their willingness to consider floodplain regulations.

The area covered by this report extends downstream along the Schuylkill River from Plymouth Dam in Conshohocken to the mouth of Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia. Flooding along Wissahickon Creek is not included in the report. The reach studied extends from 13.0 miles to 21.0 miles upstream from the river mouth. All river distances used in the report are river miles upstream from the mouth of the Schuylkill River as used by the Corps of Engineer, U.S. Army and by the U.S. Geological Survey (Bogart, 1960, p. 194). When the discharge at Trenton is less than these critical values, salinity is very sensitive to change in discharge, so that a relatively small decrease in fresh-water discharge results in a relatively great increase in salinity. Comparison of the discharge-salinity relations observed for the 14-year period August 1949-December 1963 with relations proposed by other workers but based on other time periods indicate that such relations change with time and that salinity is affected not only by discharge but also by dredging; construction of breakwater, dikes, and tidal barriers; changing sea level; tidal elevation; tidal range; and wind intensity and direction.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1586G","usgsCitation":"Keighton, W.B., 1966, Fresh-water discharge salinity relations in the tidal Delaware River: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1586, 16 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1586G.","productDescription":"16 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27485,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586g/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137597,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586g/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a49c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keighton, Walter B.","contributorId":81877,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keighton","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144536,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Many of the acids color the water yellow to brown; however, not all of the acids are colored. These acids range from simple to complex, but predominantly they are nonvolatile polymeric carboxylic acids. \r\n\r\nThe organic acids were recovered from the water by two techniques: continuous liquid-liquid extraction with n-butanol and vacuum evaporation at 50?C (centigrade). The isolated acids were studied by techniques of gas, paper, and column chromatography and infrared spectroscopy. \r\n\r\nAbout 10 percent of the acids recovered were volatile or could be made volatile for gas chromatographic analysis. Approximately 30 of these carboxylic acids were isolated, and 13 of them were individually identified. The predominant part of the total acids could not be made volatile for gas chromatographic analysis. Infrared examination of many column chromatographic fractions indicated that these nonvolatile substances are primarily polymeric hydroxy carboxylic acids having aromatic and olefinic unsaturation. The evidence suggests that some of these acids result from polymerization in aqueous solution.
