This aquifer normally discharges about 430 tons of dissolved minerals daily into the river of which about 370 tons was sodium chloride. \r\n\r\nThe Malaga Bend Experimental Salinity Alleviation Project, authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1958, Public Law 85-333,is an attempt to determine if the salinity content of the Pecos River below Malaga Bend can be decreased by reducing the inflow of saline water into the river at Malaga Bend by pumping from the brine aquifer. \r\n\r\nConstruction for the project was supervised by the Bureau of Reclamation, and the collection of data and its interpretation were the responsibility cooperatively of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Pecos River Commission.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr6535","usgsCitation":"Cox, E., and Havens, J., 1965, A progress report on the Malaga Bend Experimental Salinity Alleviation Project, Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 65-35, 92 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6535.","productDescription":"92 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179274,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86878,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-1.pdf","text":"Figure 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86879,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-2.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86883,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-6.pdf","text":"Figure 9","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86880,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-3.pdf","text":"Figure 6","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86881,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-4.pdf","text":"Figure 7","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86882,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-5.pdf","text":"Figure 8","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86885,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-8.pdf","text":"Figure 11","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86884,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-7.pdf","text":"Figure 10","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86886,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8d1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cox, E.R.","contributorId":6094,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cox","given":"E.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245366,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Havens, J.S.","contributorId":12043,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havens","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245367,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Two systems were selected--electron-capture gas chromatography and microcoulometric-titration gas chromatography. Studies on these systems are now in progress. This report provides current information on the development and application of an electron-capture gas chromatographic procedure. This method is a convenient and extremely sensitive procedure for the detection and measurement of organic pesticides having high electron affinities, notably the chlorinated organic pesticides. The electron-affinity detector is extremely sensitive to these substances but it is not as sensitive to many other compounds. By this method, the chlorinated organic pesticide may be determined on a sample of convenient size in concentrations as low as the parts-per-trillion range. To insure greater accuracy in the identifications, the pesticides reported were separated and identified by their retention times on two different types of gas chromatographic columns.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1817B","usgsCitation":"Lamar, W.L., Goerlitz, D.F., and Law, L., 1965, Identification and measurement of chlorinated organic pesticides in water by electron-capture gas chromatography: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1817, iii, 12 p. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1817B.","productDescription":"iii, 12 p. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138437,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1817b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27621,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1817b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5faacb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lamar, William L.","contributorId":15592,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lamar","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144630,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goerlitz, Donald F.","contributorId":10780,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goerlitz","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144629,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Law, LeRoy M.","contributorId":44899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Law","given":"LeRoy M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144631,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Mineralized water underlies large areas of the country, and its importance will grow as present supplies of fresh water are appropriated and developed. The potential uses fall in two main categories: (1) direct use in industrial processes, such as cooling, or for irrigation, where a moderate mineral content may not be a disadvantage; and (2) use after demineralization or dilution to whatever degree may be required by the intended user. It is clearly more efficient to produce and process water of moderate mineralization at points of use, where available in adequate amounts, than it is to process ocean water and pump it many miles from the sea.</p>\n<p>The Geological Survey, as a part of its responsibility to describe the water resources of the United States, has surveyed the known occurrences of mineralized ground water in the conterminous United States. The results are shown on the maps (sheets 1 and 2).</p>\n<p>This atlas was prepared to meet needs for information on the distribution and availability of mineralized water as expressed by Government agencies, private industries, and consultants. The maps are one step in providing an inventory of mineralized water of the Nation and will serve as a planning guide for further investigations and for development. They are necessarily generalized in many places owing to the complexity of the occurrence of the mineralized water, lack of detailed information for parts of the nation, and the difficulties inherent in attempts to put three-dimensional information on maps.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, The valley is almost entirely farmed. Its population is increasing rapidly, partly because of the expansion of metropolitan Portland. \r\n\r\nStructurally, the bedrock of the basin is a saucer-shaped syncline almost bisected lengthwise by a ridge. The bedrock basin has been partly filled by alluvium, which underlies the valley plains. \r\n\r\nGround water occurs in the Columbia River basalt, a lava unit that forms the top several hundred feet of the bedrock, and also in the zones of fine sand in the upper part of the alluvial fill. It occurs under unconfined, confined, and perched conditions. Graphs of the observed water levels in wells show that the ground water is replenished each year by precipitation. The graphs show also that the amount and time of recharge vary in different aquifers and for different modes of ground-water occurrence. The shallower alluvial aquifers are refilled each year to a level where further infiltration recharge is retarded and water drains away as surface runoff. No occurrences of undue depletion of the ground water by pumping are known. The facts indicate that there is a great quantity of additional water available for future development. The ground water is developed for use by some spring works and by thousands of wells, most of which are of small yield. Improvements are now being made in the design of the wells in basalt and in the use of sand or gravel envelopes for wells penetrating the fine-sand aquifers. \r\n\r\nThe ground water in the basalt and the valley fill is in general of good quality, only slightly or moderately hard and of low salinity. Saline and mineralized water is present in the rocks of Tertiary age below the Columbia River basalt. Under certain structural and stratigraphic conditions this water of poor quality contaminates the fresh-water aquifers. \r\n\r\nDetailed hydrologic and geologic conditions are presented in 5 tables, 7 pictures, and 17 graphic figures and plates.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1697","usgsCitation":"Hart, D.H., and Newcomb, R.C., 1965, Geology and ground water of the Tualatin Valley, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1697, v, 172 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1697.","productDescription":"v, 172 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26969,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1697/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26970,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1697/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26971,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1697/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26972,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1697/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137172,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1697/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db68618e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hart, D. Potential yields from both ground-water and surface-water sources are good. The most productive aquifers for ground-water supplies are the Biwabik Iron-Formation and the stratified glacial drift. Areas of stratified drift believed to have good water potential have been outlined. It ranks high among the more awesome gorges of North America.\r\n\r\nMany great western canyons are as well remembered for their brightly colored walls as for their airy depths. Not so the Black Canyon. Though it is assuredly not black, the dark-gray tones of its walls and the hazy shadows of its gloomy depths join together to make its name well deserved. Its name conveys an impression, not a picture.\r\n\r\nAfter the first emotional impact of the canyon, the same questions come to the minds of most reflective viewers and in about the following order: How deep is the Black Canyon, how wide, how does it compare with other canyons, what are the rocks, how did it form, and how long did it take? Several western canyons exceed the Black Canyon in overall size. Some are longer; some are deeper; some are narrower; and a few have walls as steep. But no other canyon in North American combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness, and somber countenance of the Black Canyon.\r\n\r\nIn many places the Black Canyon is as deep as it is wide. Between The Narrows and Chasm View in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument (fig. 15) it is much deeper than wide. Average depth in the monument is about 2,000 feet, ranging from a maximum of about 2,700 feet, north of Warner Point (which also is the greatest depth anywhere in the canyon), to a minimum of about 1,750 feet at The Narrows. The stretch of canyon between Pulpit Rock and Chasm View, including The Narrows, though the shallowest in the monument, is also the narrowest, has some of the steepest walls, and is, therefore, among the most impressive segments of the canyon (fig. 3).\r\n\r\nProfiles of several well-known western canyons are shown in figure 1. Deepest of these by far is Hells Canyon of the Snake, on the Idaho-Oregon border. Clearly, it dwarfs the Black Canyon in the immensity of its void, though its flaring walls lack the alarming verticality of the Black Canyon. Arizona's Grand Canyon of the Colorado is acknowledged as the greatest of them all; it is not as deep as Hells Canyon, but it is wider, longer, more rugged, and far more colorful. Its depth is two to three times that of the Black Canyon. Zion Canyon, Utah, combines depth, sheerness, serenity, and color in a chasm that ranges from capacious to extremely narrow. Its Narrows have a depth-to-width ratio unmatched by any other major American canyon.\r\n\r\nCalifornia's Yosemite Valley, in a setting of sylvan verdure, is unique among the gorges shown in profile in figure 1 in being the only glacial trough; its monolithic walls bear witness to the abrasive power of moving ice. Few cliffs in the world match the splendor of its El Capitan. Lodore Canyon, on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado, is best known, perhaps, for its noisy splashy rapids, first made famous by John Wesley Powell. Lodore Canyon also features towering cliffs of deep-red quartzite. Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Wyoming, is noted for its great waterfalls, dashing river, and bright coloration. The Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River, Colorado, features the 'world's highest suspension bridge'.\r\n\r\nThe profiles shown in figure 1 afford some basis for comparing one canyon with another. They cannot abstract in two dimensions the overall impression that each canyon makes. Color, vegetation, outcrop habit, vantage point, season of year, length of visit - even the roar of the river or lack thereof - all contribute to this highly personal effect.\r\n\r\nFor a river of its size, the Gunnison has an unusually steep gradient through the Black Canyon. The river falls about 2,150 feet from the head of the canyon at Sapinero to the mouth at its junction with North Fork - a distance of about 50 miles and an average rate of fall of about 43 feet per mile. No major floods occurred during the year, although two floods caused severe damage the first in March and April in eastern Nebraska and adjacent areas, and the second in September in Puerto Rico.</p><p>Unseasonal rains in mid-March caused extensive flooding in north-central Florida. Several thousand persons were evacuated from their homes, and damage to homes, roads, and crops was extensive.</p><p>The most widespread flooding ever known in Nebraska occurred late in March and early in April as a result of rapid melting of a heavy snow cover. Most of the flood damage, estimated at about $3 million, was to roads and bridges. The flood area extended into South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Wisconsin.</p><p>Snowmelt in April supplemented by rains and later heavy rains in early May caused severe flooding in northern Wisconsin and in Michigan Upper Peninsula.</p><p>The most destructive flood of the year was in eastern Puerto Rico as the result of hurricane Donna. More than one hundred persons died, and considerably more than one hundred persons were injured; property damage was f.bout $7 million. Hurricane Donna also caused severe flooding as it passed over Florida and along the Atlantic coastline.</p><p>In addition to these floods mentioned, 31 others of lesser magnitude were significant enough to report in this annual summary.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1790B","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Federal, State, and local agencies","usgsCitation":"Rostvedt, J., 1965, Summary of floods in the United States during 1960: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1790, vi, 147 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1790B.","productDescription":"vi, 147 p.","numberOfPages":"150","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26550,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1790b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137225,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1790b/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db699277","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rostvedt, J.O.","contributorId":24757,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rostvedt","given":"J.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143748,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
