The dispensing and spreading ability of each of these formulations was tested. The most promising emulsifier that could be used with any of the alkanols was glyceryl monostearate (self-emulsifying). However, the concentration of the alkanol in the dispersion form varied somewhat: with the length of the carbon chain. A maximum concentration of 16 percent was obtained using the longer chain alkanols in the dispersion form without losing any of the properties of a fluid. \r\n\r\nNine field tests were undertaken on small stock tanks. The retardant materials used in these tests were dodecanol, hexadecanol, and octadecanol. These materials were applied in either liquid or dispersion form. Four types of dispensing equipment were tested. The first type used a pressure system which sprayed a liquid onto the surface of the water. An anemometer and wind-controlled vane, operated by an electrical system, determined the length End frequency of application. The second type was similar to the first except that gravity was utilized to force the liquid onto the surface. The third type. used a drip system with rates of about 10 drops per minute. The fourth type used a gravity feed and a wind-controlled valve which allowed the dispersion material to flow onto the surface of the water when the wind was in the proper direction. In the field tests, the best reduction in evaporation was obtained using octadecanol in dispersion form and dispensed with the wind-controlled valve and gravity feed system. The maximum reduction in evaporation for a 2-week period was 27 percent. However, the economics of suppressing evaporation from stock tanks is questionable because of the short travel time across the tank by the film. \r\n\r\nThere are still many problems unsolved. Some of these can be resolved in the laboratory whereas others can be resolved only in the field. Some of the more serious problems are the effect of impurities in the alkanols; the rate of cooling of the alkanol from a liquid to a solid state ; the effect of the film on the exchange of water molecules between the air and water; whether the film remains effective in suppressing evaporation for any rate of movement downwind; and the possible use of dodecanol and eicosanol as suppressants.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Thus founded, the science of ground-water hydrology grew slowly and not until the 19th century is there substantial evidence of conclusions having been based on observational data. The 20th century has witnessed tremendous advances in the science in the methods of field investigation and interpretation of collected data, in the methods of determining the hydrologic characteristics of water-bearing material, and in the methods of inventorying ground-water supplies. Now, as is true of many other disciplines, the science of ground-water hydrology is characterized by frequent advancement of new ideas and techniques, refinement of old techniques, and an increasing wealth of data awaiting interpretation.

So that its widely scattered staff of professional hydrologists could keep abreast of new ideas and advances in the techniques of groundwater investigation, it has been the practice in the U.S. Geological Survey to distribute such information for immediate internal use. As the methods become better established and developed, they are described in formal publications. Six papers pertaining to widely different phases of ground-water investigation comprise this particular contribution. For the sake of clarity and conformity, the original papers have been revised and edited by the compiler.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1544H","usgsCitation":"1963, Methods of collecting and interpreting ground-water data: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1544, vi, 97 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1544H.","productDescription":"vi, 97 p.","numberOfPages":"104","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30190,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1544h/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138115,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1544h/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bc98","contributors":{"compilers":[{"text":"Bentall, Ray","contributorId":78711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bentall","given":"Ray","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":709761,"contributorType":{"id":3,"text":"Compilers"},"rank":1}]}}

Chapter A presents some of the published and recorded conclusions concerning the basic meteorological factors that influence the patterns of precipitation in the Southwest, and describes the characteristics of the drought of 1942-56 as indicated by meteorologic records. Chapter B is a general discussion of the effects of that drought as shown by hydrologic data. Subsequent chapters (C-G) provide more detailed evaluations of the effects of drought in individual river basins and specific localities. The effects of drought are discriminated from water shortages due to other causes wherever possible.

For this summary, the hydrologic units in the Southwest are classified according to type, and examples of each type are cited, but no attempt is made to summarize the effects of drought in every hydrologic unit in the Southwest, as was described in preceding parts of this report.

The comprehensive study of drought has required analysis of the longest records available concerning all aspects of the water resources, with special attention to the 1942-56 period to ascertain similarities with earlier drought periods and contrasts with periods of greater precipitation. Despite the intended emphasis on drought, the studies have been almost as broad in scope as general studies of interrelations of the hydrologic cycle.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Drought in the Southwest, 1942-56 (Professional Paper 372)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp372H","usgsCitation":"Thomas, H.E., 1963, General summary of effects of the drought in the Southwest: Chapter H in Drought in the Southwest, 1942-56: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 372, iii, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp372H.","productDescription":"iii, 22 p.","numberOfPages":"33","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":336050,"rank":9,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372G","text":"Chapter G: Effects of drought along Pacific Coast in California"},{"id":336049,"rank":8,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372F","text":"Chapter F: Effects of drought in the Colorado River basin"},{"id":336048,"rank":7,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372E","text":"Chapter E: Effects of drought in basins of interior drainage"},{"id":336047,"rank":6,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372D","text":"Chapter D: Effects of drought in the Rio Grande basin"},{"id":336046,"rank":5,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372C","text":"Chapter C: Effects of drought in central and south Texas"},{"id":336045,"rank":4,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372B","text":"Chapter B: General effects of drought on water resources of the Southwest"},{"id":66134,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0372h/report.pdf","size":"928 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":120499,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0372h/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":336044,"rank":3,"type":{"id":22,"text":"Related Work"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp372A","text":"Chapter A: The meteorologic phenomenon of drought in the Southwest"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Southwestern United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b0676","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thomas, H. Ground water is obtained from weathered volcanic and intrusive rocks (bedrocks), from limestone, and from alluvium. The water obtained from weathered bedrocks and from alluvium in the valleys of the North Side Range is generally of better quality than that obtained elsewhere on the island. This report summarizes the part of a study of the geology and hydrology that was done from October 1960 through June 1961. Additional work is being continued.\r\n\r\nMortandad Canyon is a narrow east-southeast-trending canyon about 9? miles long that heads on the central part of the Pajarito Plateau at an altitude of about 7,340 feet. The canyon is tributary to the Rio Grande. The drainage area of the part of Mortandad Canyon that was investigated is about 2 square miles, and the total drainage area is about 4.9 square miles.\r\n\r\nThe Pajarito Plateau is capped by the Bandelier Tuff of Pleistocene age. Mortandad Canyon is cut in the Bandelier, and alluvium covers the floor of the canyon to depths ranging from less than 1 foot to as much as 100 feet. The Bandelier is underlain by silt, sand, conglomerate, and interbedded basalt of the Santa Fe Group of Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene(?) age. Some ground water is perched in the alluvium in the canyon; however, the top of the main aquifer is in the Santa Fe Group at a depth of about 990 feet below the canyon floor.\r\n\r\nJoints in the Bandelier Tuff probably were caused by shrinkage of the tuff during cooling. The joints range in width from hairline cracks to fissures several inches wide. Water can infiltrate along the open joints where the Bandelier is at the surface; however, soil, alluvial fill, and autochthonous clay inhibit infiltration on the tops of mesas and probably in the alluvium-floored canyons also.\r\n\r\nThirty-three test holes, each less than 100 feet deep, were drilled in 10 lies across Mortandad Canyon from the western margin of the study area to just west of the Los Alamos-Santa Fe County line. Ten of the holes were cased for observation wells to measure water levels and collect water samples from the alluvium. Twenty-three of the holes were cased to seal out water and were used as access tubes to accommodate a neutron-neutron probe for determining the moisture content of the alluvium and tuff.\r\n\r\nThe source of recharge for the perched ground-water body in the alluvium in Mortandad Canyon is the precipitation in the drainage area of the canyon. During the winter of 1960-61, a snowpack 1-2 feet thick accumulated in the narrow shaded upper part of the canyon. The alluvium below the snowpack received some recharge because of diurnal melting during the winter. In March 1961 the snowmelt water saturated most of the thin alluvium in the upper part of the canyon, and a surface stream began to flow on the alluvium. The maximum flow of the stream was about 250 gpm (gallons per minute). Water from the stream infiltrated the alluvium at the front of the stream and in the reach upstream from the front. A ground-water mound was formed beneath the channel by water infiltrating from the stream. The front of the stream and the front of the ground-water mound advanced eastward to about the middle of the area studied. From this point eastward, the alluvium was thick enough to absorb and transmit the amount of flow in 1961. Late in April the front of the stream retreated, and by the first of May the flow stopped. During and after this period the ground-water mound decayed, and ground-water levels declined in the upper part of the canyon as water drained into the channel and downgradient through the alluvium.\r\n\r\nThe amount of recharge was small in the wide lower part of the canyon during the period of study. The rise in ground-water levels and the increase in moisture content of the alluvium in the lower part of the canyon indicate that water moved downgradient by underflow through the alluvium from the recharge area in the upper part of the canyon. The advantages of full development of the existing area within a city before expanding city boundaries, are related to both economics and civic pride. The expansion of city boundaries usually results in higher per capital costs for the operation of city governments.

Certainly no responsible city official would oppose reasonable development of watersheds and flood plains and thus sacrifice an increase in tax revenue. Within the words \"reasonable development\" lies the problem faced by these officials. They are aware that the natural function of a stream channel, and its associated flood plain is to carry away excess water in time of flood. They are also aware that failure to recognize this has often led to haphazard development on flood plains with a consequent increase in flood damages. In the absence of factual data defining the risk involved in occupying flood plains, stringent corrective and preventative measures must be taken to regulate man's activities on flood plains to a point beyond normal precaution.

Flood-flow characteristics in the reach of White Rock Creek that lies between the northern city boundary of Dallas and Northwest Highway (Loop 12) at the upper end of White Rock Lake, are presented in this report. Hydrologic data shown include history and magnitude of floods, flood profiles, outlines of areas inundated by three floods, and estimates of mean velocities of flow at selected points.

Approximate areas inundated by floods of April 1942 and July 1962 along White Rock Creek and by the flood of October 1962 along Cottonwood Creek, Floyd Branch, and Jackson Branch, are delineated on maps. Greater floods have undoubtedly occurred in the past but no attempt is made to show their probable overflow limits because basic data on such floods could not be obtained. Depths of inundation can be estimated from the information shown. Elevations shown are in feet above mean sea level, datum of 1929.

The data and computations supporting the results given herein are in the files of the Geological Survey in Austin, Texas.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr6336","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Dallas","usgsCitation":"Gilbert, C.R., 1963, Floods on White Rock Creek above White Rock Lake at Dallas, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 63-36, ii, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6336.","productDescription":"ii, 15 p.","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":113001,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0036/plate-1.pdf","size":"4122","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":113002,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0036/plate-2.pdf","size":"4104","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":155261,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0036/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52512,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","city":"Dallaw","otherGeospatial":"White Rock Creek","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d8e4b07f02db5df7e4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gilbert, Clarence R.","contributorId":30965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gilbert","given":"Clarence","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Most installations consist of a vertically mounted metal pipe, a wooden rod, an intake device, and a small amount of granulated cork. These gages are placed where elevations of flood crests are desired. Water rising and then falling in the gage leaves a high-water mark of granulated cork on the wooden rod. The elevation of this mark can be determined at a date subsequent to the date of the crest.

It has been found that the high-water mark left on the rod may not represent the true elevation of the flood crest in the stream at the gage site. The difference between the true elevation of the crest at the gage and the recorded elevation will be designated drawdown if the recorded elevation is less than the true elevation, or pileup if the recorded elevation is greater than the true elevation. Tests of drawdown and pileup effects have been made in the past by Survey personnel and others. (See p. 8.) These investigations have sometimes brought forth conflicting results, probably due to the varied conditions under which the gages were tested.

The purpose of this investigation was (1) to determine the pileup and drawdown characteristics of the intakes now being used by the Survey and (2) to design a better intake if existing models were found unsuitable. It was further prescribed that any new design that might result should be easily fabricated from standard pipe fittings, and should be unaffected by pileup or drawdown in excess of 0.1 foot for velocities up to about 8 feet per second.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr63147","usgsCitation":"Carter, J.R., and Gamble, C.R., 1963, Tests of crest-stage gage intakes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 63-147, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr63147.","productDescription":"10 p.","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":499023,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0147/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":184244,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0147/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db6845d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carter, Jack R.","contributorId":71632,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257644,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gamble, Charles R.","contributorId":6822,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gamble","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
