This area is attracting new industry and has shown a population increase of about 47 percent from 1950 to 1960, mostly urban. With the economic growth of the county, the availability and quality of water become increasingly important.

The county is in the Coastal Plain of New Jersey. It is underlain by unconsolidated sands and clays of Quaternary, Tertiary, and Cretaceous age. The Raritan and Magothy Formations constitute the most important aquifers and yield more than 95 percent of the water pumped by the public water systems in the county. These formations are capable of yielding 1,400 gpm (gallons per minute) or more to large diameter wells. High yielding wells generally can be drilled anywhere in the county, although the formations are deeper toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Cohansey Sand, second most important aquifer, yields up to 800 gpm or more from large diameter wells. This aquifer is present only in the sparsely populated southeastern half of the county. The Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand are capable of yielding 100 to 200 gpm in certain areas.

The overall chemical quality of the naturally occurring ground water is good. The water generally meets the U.S. Public Health Service's (1962) suggested limit for dissolved solids; however, in some areas, the water carries objectionable amounts of iron and nitrate in solution and has a low pH. Contamination of ground water by salt-water encroachment or by pollution from industrial activity or organic waste in densely populated areas should be prevented. The quality rather than the quantity of water may be the important factor in future ground-water developments.

The 21 public water systems in Gloucester County pumped about 1.3 billion gallons of water during 1948 and some 2.7 billion gallons during 1959. This is slightly more than a hundred percent increase in pumpage in 12 year s. The average per capita public water supply consumption in 1959 was approximately 75 gallons per day.

This report includes a summary of the history of the present installations, groundwater conditions, quality and availability of water, and potential future yield for the 2 public water systems in Gloucester County.
","language":"English","publisher":"State of New Jersey Department of Conservation and Economic Development, Division of Water Policy and Supply","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the State of New Jersey","usgsCitation":"Hardt, W.F., 1963, Public water supplies in Gloucester County, New Jersey: New Jersey Division of Water Policy and Supply Water Resources Circular 9, vii, 55 p.","productDescription":"vii, 55 p.","numberOfPages":"64","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":284195,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":286049,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70095403/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Gloucester County","otherGeospatial":"Lower Delaware River Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -75.42875,39.514802 ], [ -75.42875,39.888317 ], [ 74.877189,39.888317 ], [ 74.877189,39.514802 ], [ -75.42875,39.514802 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5355952ee4b0120853e8c16f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hardt, William F.","contributorId":70013,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hardt","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":491187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

When the well is pumped, the discharge water tends to come from the upper part of the open hole because less energy is expended by removal of low‐density water from this region than by removal of high‐density water from the lower part of the open hole. Associated with the Sheyenne River, which flows through the southern part of the region in a deep trench, are many stream terraces, spillways, deposits of ice-contact stratified drift, and eroded ground-moraine areas. Six stages of drainage have been established to which these various features can be assigned. In the first two stages the features formed as melt water drained to the glacial James River south of the region and as the ice front stood at and later retreated from the site of the Heimdal moraine, a recessional moraine of the Leeds lobe. The later stages occurred after the valley of the Sheyenne River was free of ice and after glacial Lake Souris northwest of the region drained down the valley to glacial Lake Agassiz in the eastern part of the state. Features originating during the four later stages are largely related to the deposition of the North Viking moraine (another, more northern, recessional moraine of the Leeds lobe) and subsequent retreat of the ice from the moraine. Discharge from the local Devils and Stump lakes and from glacial Lake Souris also were of considerable importance in the genesis of many features.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1963)74[859:LPGDIT]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Aronow, S., 1963, Late Pleistocene glacial drainage in the Devils Lake Region, North Dakota: GSA Bulletin, v. 74, no. 7, p. 859-874, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1963)74[859:LPGDIT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"859","endPage":"874","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":352309,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Devils Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              47.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.25,\n              47.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.25,\n              48\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              48\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              47.75\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"74","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5aff6264e4b0da30c1bfde80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Aronow, Saul","contributorId":59509,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aronow","given":"Saul","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The oldest rock exposed in the valley walls is the sandstone of Late Cambrian age. Dolomite of the Prairie du Chien Group of Ordovician age overlies the sandstone and forms the. resistant cap on the hills. The St. Peter Sandstone, Platteville and Decorah Formations, and Galena Dolomite, all Ordovician in age, form a narrow belt along the southern boundary of the area. Outwash and alluvium of Pleistocene and Recent age fill the valleys. The eastern half of the area was glaciated and is covered with till. The sandstone of Late Cambrian age and the sand and gravel of the outwash deposits are hydraulically connected. Ground water occurs under unconfined (water-table) conditions in the western unglaciated part of the basin and under artesian conditions beneath the till locally in the eastern part. The source of most of the ground water is direct infiltration of precipitation; however, some ground water enters the area as underflow from the south. About 7 inches of the 30 inches of average annual precipitation recharges the ground-water reservoir. The ground water generally moves toward Black Earth Creek where it is discharged. Some ground water moves out of the basin as underflow beneath the valley of Black Earth Creek, and some is discharged by evapotranspiration or is withdrawn by pumping from wells. Water levels in shallow nonartesian wells respond rapidly to precipitation. The effect of precipitation on water levels in artesian wells is slower and more subdued. Water levels are generally highest in spring and lowest in fall and winter. The flow of upper Black Earth Creek is derived mostly from ground-water discharge, except during short periods of and immediately after precipitation when most of the flow is derived from surface runoff. The runoff from upper Black Earth Creek basin decreased from an average of 8.72 inches per square mile of drainage area in 1955 to 5.55 inches in 1958; the decrease reflects the generally decreasing precipitation and declining water levels in the basin during that period. On July 10, 1958, the discharge from the basin was 0.367 cubic feet per second per square mile, and the greatest discharge was 0.84 cubic feet per second per square mile from the southwest subbasin. The ground water has an average temperature of about 50°F. It is a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type water and is very hard.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to the hydrology of the United States (Water-Supply Paper 1669)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1669C","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey","usgsCitation":"Cline, D.R., and Busby, M., 1963, Hydrology of upper Black Earth Creek basin, Wisconsin, with a section on surface water: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1669, Report: iv, 27 p.; 5 Plates:18.00 x 15.65 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1669C.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 27 p.; 5 Plates:18.00 x 15.65 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"32","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":25944,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137643,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25940,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25939,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":422984,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24862.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":25941,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25943,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25942,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669c/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dane County","otherGeospatial":"Black Earth Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.81494903564453,\n              43.04079076668198\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.81494903564453,\n              43.21193220073775\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.52999114990234,\n              43.21193220073775\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.52999114990234,\n              43.04079076668198\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.81494903564453,\n              43.04079076668198\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc7d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cline, Denzel R.","contributorId":87910,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cline","given":"Denzel","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143260,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Busby, Mark W.","contributorId":83099,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busby","given":"Mark W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The modern production, though far below the earlier, has accounted for more than 10 percent of the total value of the fishery in all but one of the last 20 years. Data are given on growth rate, age and year-class composition, size distribution, and length-weight relation of 1,800 fish collected in 1957-59 at Bayfield, Wis., and Marquette, Whitefish Point, and Dollar Settlement, Mich.  Studies of the body-scale relation, sex ratio, and age and size at maturity were limited to fish collected at Bayfield. The age composition and mean age varied widely by port and year of capture. Oldest fish were those of the 1957 Bayfield samples which were dominated by age group VII and averaged 5.5 years old. The youngest were from Whitefish Point in 1959; age-group III was dominant, and the mean age was 3.2 years. The evidence on the strength of year classes was not clear-cut, but it was obvious that fluctuations in stocks of different areas were largely independent. The percentage of legal-size fish (17 inches or longer) in age groups ranged widely; only 8.6 percent of the V group were legal in the 1957 Bayfield collections, whereas 100 percent of fish of the same age were legal in the 1957-59 collections from Whitefish Point. The weight of whitefish in the combined samples increased as the 3.2408 power of the length. The growth rate from the fastest to the slowest growing stocks ranked as follows: Whitefish Point; Dollar Settlement and Marquette (fish from the two ports reversed ranks after 3 years); Bayfield. The major differences in growth in length among the various stocks occurred during the first years of life. Beyond the fifth year the annual increments were nearly the same in all stocks. The whitefish from Whitefish Point, Dollar Settlement, and Marquette are among the fastest growing in the Great Lakes. The differences among the Lake Superior stocks in age and year-class composition, and in growth rate offer convincing evidence that populations of different areas are entirely independent. The sexes were almost equally represented (51.5 percent males) in the combined Bayfield samples, but males were scarce in age groups older than VIII. Whitefish from Bayfield shorter than 14.5 inches were immature and those larger than 17.4 inches were mature. The youngest mature fish belonged to age-group V,and all older than the VII group were mature.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Fishery Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Dryer, W.R., 1963, Age and growth of the whitefish in Lake Superior: Fishery Bulletin, v. 63, no. 1, p. 77-95.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"77","endPage":"95","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128720,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266925,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://fishbull.noaa.gov/63-1/dryer.pdf"}],"volume":"63","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db6896d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dryer, William R.","contributorId":71921,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dryer","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308130,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The specimens were caught in bottom nets except for 49, all less than 6 inches long, taken in midwater trawls. Lake Michigan bloaters under 7 inches long depend heavily on zooplankton. Those larger than 7 inches feed predominantly on Pontoporeia affinis and Mysis relicta, although fish of the 7.0- to 7.9-inch size range commonly eat zooplankton, expecially in shallower water. The organic compounds were eluted from the carbon according to techniques developed at the U.S. Public Health Service. On the assumption that chloroform eluates represent less polar compounds from industrial sources and alcohol eluates the more polar varieties of natural origin, plots of chloroform eluates against alcohol eluates appear to be useful in judging water qualities. Based upon these criteria, the data in this paper indicate that both the waters of northern Lake Michigan and of Lake Huron, in the vicinity of Hammond Bay, Michigan, are relatively free from pollution. The limnetic waters of Lake Michigan showed a particularly high ratio of alcohol to chloroform eluates. Data for monthly samples indicated that this ratio fluctuated seasonally. The periodicity of the fluctuations was similar to those of lake levels and water temperatures.
","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 6th Conference on Great Lakes Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"6th Conference on Great Lakes Research","conferenceDate":"June 13-15, 1963","conferenceLocation":"Ann Arbor, MI","language":"English","publisher":"University of Michigan","usgsCitation":"Daniels, S.L., Kempe, L.L., Graham, E.S., and Beeton, A.M., 1963, Quantitation of microorganic compounds in waters of the Great Lakes by adsorption on activated carbon, in Proceedings of the 6th Conference on Great Lakes Research, Ann Arbor, MI, June 13-15, 1963, p. 118-123.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"118","endPage":"123","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321594,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574d6635e4b07e28b6684cbe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Daniels, Stacy L.","contributorId":105821,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Daniels","given":"Stacy","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630130,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kempe, Lloyd L.","contributorId":55117,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kempe","given":"Lloyd","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630131,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Graham, E. This 400-square-mile area has supported a commercial fishery for many years but the development of the intensive sport fishery is more recent, mostly since World War II. The commercial fishery is based on several species, whereas anglers are particularly interested in the walleye, Stizostedion v. vitreum. Broad objectives of tagging studies initiated in September 1957 were to obtain information on the heterogeneity, movement, and exploitation of the walleye population of northern Green Bay.
