Counties, cities, education institutions, and water users’ organizations also have cooperated for many years. The need for water information applies to all levels of government. It is, therefore, advantageous for the Federal Government, State governments, and other political subdivisions to share in the expense to the extent possible consistent with their common interests and responsibilities. Two of these components, designated antigens I and II, were missing from 116 of 125 blood samples from red salmon taken in Asian waters. In contrast, only 31 of 905 blood samples from red salmon of American origin lacked these components. Intermediate frequencies of occurrence of these antigenic components were found in blood samples from red salmon caught in the central North Pacific and Bering Sea. Distribution of these basic data reports is limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. Without exception, it has been found that under-water shotpoints result in a more efficient conversion of explosive energy into seismic energy than do drilled-hole shotpoints. This experience, together with elimination of drilling costs, has led to the use of underwater shotpoints wherever possible. Three of the 23 shotpoints were in the Pacific Ocean, and for these we have no detailed information on the fish kill. Another six shotpoints were located in inland bodies of water. These are: *  Soda Lake near Fallon, Nevada *  Mono Lake near Lee Vining, California *  Lake Mead near Boulder City, Nevada *  Shasta Lake near Redding, California *  C.J. Strike Reservoir near Bruneau, Idaho *  Lucky Peak Reservoir near Boise, Idaho The 22 high-explosive charges, weighing a total of 95,100 pounds, that were fired in lakes containing fish life resulted in the known death of 2,413 game fish with a total weight of 759 pounds. Heckler, district engineer, Surface Water Branch. </span></p><p><span>This report is the second in a series presenting, annually, basic data on surface-water records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in New Mexico were contained in Parts 7, 8, and 9 of that series. </span></p><p><span>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Dis-tribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. These 5-year water-supply papers will show daily discharge and will be compiled on the same geographical areas previously used for the annual series; however, some of the 14 parts of conterminous United States will be further subdivided. </span></p><p><span>The records for New Mexico will be published in water-supply papers covering Part 7 for stations in the Lower Mississippi River drainage, Part 8 for Western Gulf of Mexico drainage, and Part 9 for Colorado River drainage. For 1960 water year, the WSP Numbers for these parts were 1711, 1712, 1713 respectively. These aquifers yielded about 32.3 mgd (million gallons per day) for public and industrial water supplies in 1958; about 24.5 mgd was withdrawn from the Old Bridge Sand Member.</p>\n<p>Although the Old Bridge Sand Member is exposed to salt water in the Raritan Bay near South Amboy and in the South River near Old Bridge, there is no widespread salt-water encroachment problem in this aquifer. However, the intensity and distribution of pumping has been limited by the threat of such encroachment.</p>\n<p>Widespread salt-water encroachment in the Farrington Sand Member has caused numerous wells to be abandoned; the greatest advance of salt water has been in the area south of Parlin. If not restricted, the encroachment of salt water threatens to render a considerable part of this aquifer unfit for use in most of the area south of Parlin.</p>\n<p>The potential benefits of a proposed tidal dam on the South River are discussed.
