Limitations on maximum and minimum temperatures and on turbidity are such that a combination surface-and ground-water supply probably would be required.\n\nSix prospective sites were examined with respect to their water supply. The sites were at the mouths of Orofino, Jim Fork, Lolo, Lawyer, Clear, and Cottonwood Creeks.\n\nThe geology and ground-water hydrology were studied to determine the potential ground-water supply at each of the sites. Spot measurements were made on the six tributary streams and comparative studies were made with records on nearby streams to determine probable minimum flows.\n\nOf the six sites studied, only one, at the mouth of Clear Creek, had a favorable potential for both surface-and ground-water supply. This report has been prepared by the Geological Survey under the immediate supervision of Fred Kunkel, district geologist for California, in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources, and tabulates through October 1962 all tests analyzed by the Geological Survey for the San Joaquin Valley. The report is designed to be expanded when additional tests are analyzed or new tests are made.

About 30,000 acre-ft per year comes from Deer Creek basin, a tributary drainage of 155 square miles.\r\nYearly streamflow is highly variable. The discharge of Bluff Creek above Lake Hefner, near Oklahoma City, a small sub-basin of 1.62 square miles in Deer Creek basin, has varied from 484 acre-ft in 1951 to 55 acre-ft in 1956, a ratio of 9 to 1 during the period of record 1950-58.\r\n\r\nHighest runoff within a year tends to occur in the spring months of April through June, a 3-month period that, on the average, accounts for about 60 percent of the annual discharge of Cottonwood Creek. Lowest streamflow usually occurs in August and September. Occurrence of no flow in some years has been observed in the lower part of the basin and in the upper parts of Bluff Creek and Chisholm Creek basins. Variation in daily streamflow is such that the estimated average discharge of 97 cfs (cubic feet per second) for Cottonwood Creek just upstream from Guthrie is exceeded only 12 percent of the time and the daily discharge is more than 16 cfs only half of the time. There is no flow at the site about 7 percent of the time, assuming conditions of basin development prevailing in the last decade.\r\n\r\nBase flow in parts of the basin is augmented to some extent by seepage from reservoirs. In Bluff Creek basin, the seepage from Lake Hefner toward Spring Creek is 0.2 to 0.3 acre-ft per day; that toward Bluff Creek ranges from 1.7 to 3 acre-ft per day, depending on variation of reservoir level in the top 6 feet of capacity; and that toward Dry Creek is 0.3 to 0.4 acre-ft per day. Low flow in Chisholm Creek is sustained by sewage effluent from The Village, averaging 3 acre-ft per day.\r\n\r\nThe surface waters of Cottonwood Creek basin are hard but in general are usable for domestic and irrigation supplies. Evidence indicates brines are present in upper Chisholm Creek. The chemical character of the waters varies from a sulfate, chloride type of water in the major part of the basin to a calcium, magnesium bicarbonate type of water in tributaries in the lower part of the basin.\r\n\r\nThis report gives an estimate of the average discharge at several sites in Cottonwood Creek basin for a 19-year base period, October 1937 to September 1956. Duration curves of daily discharge for Bluff Creek above Lake Hefner are shown for the period of record and for the base period. The low-flow part of an estimated duration curve for Cottonwood Creek near Guthrie is given. Monthly and annual discharge records for Bluff Creek above Lake Hefner are presented. The results of 99 discharge measurements on Cottonwood Creek near Guthrie (through December 1961) and of 312 discharge measurements at 29 other sites in the basin are tabulated.\r\n\r\n(available as The objective of this study is to delineate and interpret gravity anomalies and regional trends so that the configuration and depth of the buried erosional surface of the Paleozoic rocks may be determined. This buried surface is of utmost importance in understanding the geologic history of the Nevada Test Site region, the thickness and distribution of the overlying volcanic rocks and alluvium, and the movement of ground water. The Paleozoic rocks cause positive gravity anomalies where they outcrop or occur near the surface and negative anomalies where they are buried in valleys or capped by low-density Tertiary volcanic rocks.
Gravity trends which extend over the entire area provide a basis for computing the regional gravity gradient. The regional gravity gradient must be removed from the data for geologic interpretation of the paleotopographic surface in any limited area.
Knowledge of the thickness of low-density material overlying the paleotopographic surface is useful in several ways. Proposed underground test sites, such as drill holes and tunnels, may be evaluated in terms of rock unit thickness and alluvial cover requirements. Recent work by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey has demonstrated ground-water movement through the Paleozoic rocks in the vicinity of the Nevada Test Site. Therefore, knowledge of the position of buried Paleozoic rocks is important in evaluating (a) the rate and direction of flow of the ground water, (b) ground-water supplies for domestic and industrial uses, and (c) the possibility of radioactive contamination of ground water. Finally, regional gravity trends and paleotopography are useful in working out the structural history of the area in connection with geologic studies now in progress.
The purpose of this interim report is to present the major part of the gravity data obtained as of December 31, 1961. The data are presented as a complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map. Although the gravity contours are somewhat generalized because the map has a scale of 1:250,000 and a contour interval of 5 milligals, the largest anomalies are adequately delineated.
Preliminary results of this gravity survey have been reported by Wilmarth and others, 1960, and by Diment and others, 1959 and 1960.
