The outflow from the lake, based on limited streamflow records varies from less than 60 cfs to well over 15,000 cfs, with an annual flow in 1960 of 3196 cfs or 2,320,000 acre-feet. With this pronounced variation in flow, regulation by storage is necessary for power development. The requisite storage can be developed by drawing the lake below its natural level. For complete regulation, a drawdown of 78 feet would be required. Regulation of 90 percent of mean flow can be accomplished with a drawdown of 67 feet. Construction of a dam at or near the lake outlet is not considered feasible. The most likely site for a powerhouse appears to be in the McArthur River Valley where a mean head of as much as 1004 feet could be utilized which with a mean flow of 3196 cfs could develop 218,000 kw. The principal market for this power would be the Anchorage and vicinity area and the Kenai Peninsula.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6174","usgsCitation":"Jackson, B.L., 1961, Potential water power of Lake Chakachamna, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 61-74, ii, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6174.","productDescription":"ii, 20 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424641,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1961/0074/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146605,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1961/0074/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Lake Chakachamna","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.04132064729359\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.35691037863626,\n              61.04132064729359\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.35691037863626,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db6830c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jackson, Bruce Lawellin","contributorId":103296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jackson","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"Lawellin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

From these data, composite frequency curves were defined which express the ratio of floods of various recurrence intervals to the mean annual flood. Multiple correlation techniques were used to obtain formulas that relate the basin parameters of drainage area, main channel slope, and lake and reservoir surface area to the mean annual flood. By combining the results from the mean annual flood formulas with the regional frequency curves, the flood-frequency relationship can be determined for most sites in the State where the drainage basin exceeds 20 square miles. The curves and formulas are not applicable to: main stem of several of the larger rivers, highly regulated streams where it is possible for man to alter flood peaks, and drainage basins under 70 square miles in a part of west-central Wisconsin.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Madison, WI","doi":"10.3133/ofr6144","collaboration":"Prepared in A. Einstein for computing the total discharge of sediment particles of sizes that are in appreciable quantities in the stream bed. This procedure was modified by the U.S. Geological Survey and adapted to computing the total sediment discharge of a stream on the basis of samples of bed sediment, depth-integrated samples of suspended sediment, streamflow measurements, and water temperature. This paper gives simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge by the modified Einstein procedure. Each of four homographs appreciably simplifies a major step in the computations. Within the stated limitations, use of the homographs introduces much less error than is present in either the basic data or the theories on which the computations of total sediment discharge are based. The results are nearly as accurate mathematically as those that could be obtained from the longer and more complex arithmetic and algebraic computations of the Einstein procedure.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1593","usgsCitation":"Colby, B.R., and Hubbell, D.W., 1961, Simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge with the modified Einstein procedure: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1593, vi, 17 p. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1593.","productDescription":"vi, 17 p. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26000,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264358,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-1.pdf","size":"3161","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264359,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-2.pdf","size":"2582","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264360,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-3.pdf","size":"1606","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264361,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-4.pdf","size":"355","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264362,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-5.pdf","size":"1808","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264363,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-6.pdf","size":"1599","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264364,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-7.pdf","size":"4402","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264365,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-8.pdf","size":"4532","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f9e4b07f02db5f38d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colby, Bruce R.","contributorId":59775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hubbell, David Wellington","contributorId":88330,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hubbell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"Wellington","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These Quaternary materials are divided on the basis of topgraphic position into 'high terrace deposits' and 'alluvium.' The high terrace lies at an elevation of 50 to 60 feet above the alluvium, which in turn lies 7 to 15 feet above the channel of the Canadian River. Southwest of Norman a relatively thick section of these deposits occur as a hydrologic unit and overlie impermeable Permian shale. The high terrace deposits contain thick beds of clay, silt, and fine sand, whereas the alluvium contains a higher percentage of coarse sand and gravel.\r\nGround-water recharge is estimated to be 23 percent of the normal annual precipitation of 33.22 inches; the specific yield is about 15 percent, and the coefficient of permeability is about 1,000 gpd/ft2. Using these figures 17,000 acre-feet of water is computed to be in storage within the area acting as a hydrologic unit. About 3.6 million gallons of water is discharged daily from the high terrace deposits through a 16,000-foot section of alluvium having a saturated thickness of 40 feet along the river.\r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the high terrace deposits meets the standards of the U.S. Public Health Service for domestic water used by Interstate carriers but nitrate content of one well is higher than recommended by the Oklahoma Department of Public Health. Water in the alluvium is of poorer quality because the water is concentrated by evapotranspiration.\r\n\r\n(available as photostat copy only)","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr61177","usgsCitation":"Stacy, B.L., 1961, Ground water in the alluvial deposits of the Canadian River valley near Norman, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 61-177, 61 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr61177.","productDescription":"61 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184149,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d7fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stacy, Bill L.","contributorId":99637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stacy","given":"Bill","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The valley floor, with an area of about 150 square miles, has a shape that more nearly resembles a Y than a crescent, although the valley apparently was named after the arc described by its southern part and northeastern arm. The northwestern arm of the Y extends northward to the small railroad town of Beowawe on the Humboldt River; the northeastern arm lies east of the low Dry Hills. The leg of the Y extends southwestward toward a narrow gap which separates the Crescent Valley from the Carico Lake Valley. The total drainage area of the Crescent Valley-about 700 square miles--includes also the slopes of the bordering mountain ranges: the Shoshone Range to the west, the Cortez Mountains to the east, and the Toiyabe Range to the south. \r\n\r\nThe early history of the Crescent Valley was dominated by mining of silver and gold, centered at Lander in the Shoshone Range and at Cortez and Mill Canyon in the Cortez Mountains, but in recent years the only major mining activity has been at Gold Acres; there open-pit mining of low-grade gold ore has supported a community of about 200. For many years the only agricultural enterprises in the valley were two cattle ranches, but recently addition lands have been developed for the raising of crops in the west-central part of the valley. The average annual precipitation upon the floor of the Crescent Valley is probably less than 7 inches, of which only a little more than 1 inch formally falls during the growing season (from June through September). This is far less than the requirement of any plants of economic value, and irrigation is essential to agricultural development. Small perennial streams rising in the mountains have long been utilized for domestic supply, mining and milling activities of the past, and irrigation, and recently some large wells have been developed for irrigation. In 1956 the total pumpage from wells in the valley was 2,300 acre-feet. \r\n\r\nThe Crescent Valley is a basin in which has accumulated a large volume of sediments that had been eroded and transported by streams from the surrounding mountains. The deepest wells have penetrated only the upper 350 feet of these sediments, which on the basis of the known thickness of sediments in other intermontane basins in central Nevada may be as much as several thousand feet thick. Because this valley fill is saturated practically to the level of the valley floor, the total volume of ground water in storage amounts to millions of acre-feet. In practically all wells drilled to date, the water has been of a quality satisfactory for irrigation and domestic use. \r\n\r\nThe amount of water that can be developed and used perennially is far smaller than the total in storage and is dependent upon the average annual recharge to the ground-water reservoir. This recharge comes principally from streams, fed largely by snowmelt, that drain the higher mountains. The average annum recharge to the valley fill is estimated to be about 13,000 acre-feet. This natural supply, which is largely consumed by native vegetation on the valley floor, constitutes a perennial supply for beneficial use only to the extent that the natural discharge can be reduced. In time, much of the natural discharge, can probably be salvaged, if it is economically feasible to pump ground water after water levels have been lowered as much as 100 feet in the areas that now appear to be favorable for the development of irrigation supplies. \r\nIn 5 wells in the phreatophyte area, where the water table is within 3-8 feet \r\nof the land surface, the trends in water level have paralleled those, in precipitation-downward during the dry years 1952-55, upward in wetter 1956 and 1957, \r\nand as high in 1957 as at any time since 1948. In most wells there is also a \r\nseasonal fluctuation of 1-3 feet, from a high in the spring to a low in the fall. \r\nThere is no evi","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. S. Govt. Print. As he requires increasing amounts of water for home and factory, he drills deeper wells, and builds longer aqueducts and larger dams and reservoirs. As he disposes of un- wanted waste materials, he either treats them by using water or pollutes the receiving body of water. As he dredges and deepens coastal streams carrying salt water, and he pumps greater quantities of water from wells in coastal areas, he increases the likelihood of salt-water contamination. These and many other urban effects upon hydrology deserve increasing study if we are to provide for the best use of the water and land resources available to the Nation's urban centers.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt.
