This estimated use amounts to about 1,500 gpd (galIons per day) per capita. An additional 2,000,000 mgd were used to develop waterpower.

Withdrawal use of water requires that the water be removed from the ground or diverted from a stream or lake. In this report the use is divided into five types: public supplies, rural, irrigation, self-supplied industrial, and waterpower. Consumptive use of water is the quantity discharged to the atmosphere or incorporated in the products of the process in which it was used. Only 61,000 mgd of the 270,000 mgd withdrawn was consumed.

Of the water withdrawn in 1960, 220,000 mgd (including irrigation conveyance losses) was taken from surface sources and 47,000 from underground sources. Withdrawal of water for uses other than waterpower has increased 12 percent since 1955. The amount of water used for generation of waterpower has! increased 33 percent since 1955. The use of saline water was almost twice as great in 1960 as in 1955.

The upper limit of our water supply is the average annual runoff, nearly 1,200,000 mgd. It is about 150 miles long by about 30 miles wide; and its area is about 5,000 square miles. The Sacramento Valley is drained by the Sacramento River, the largest in California, which rises west of Mount Shasta and flows southward to join the San Joaquin River near Suisun Bay and discharges through San Francisco Bay to the Pacific. Most of the valley floor is suitable for growing crops, and under irrigation the land is highly productive. \r\n\r\nThe Sacramento Valley is underlain by sediments transported from the surrounding mountains by the Sacramento River and its tributaries. The floor of the valley slopes southward from about 300 feet above sea level at the north end near Red Bluff to sea level at Suisun Bay. The Sutter Buttes, which are erosional remnants of an old volcano rise to 2,132 feet above sea level near the center of the valley. The valley floor is not a featureless plain but is characterized by various types of topography, which have been assigned to four principal groups: 1, low hills and dissected alluvial uplands; 2, low alluvial plains and fans; 3, flood plains and natural levees; and 4, flood basins; a fifth and relatively minor group consists of the tidal Islands of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, which are south of the principal area of investigation. The rocks that underlie the Sacramento Valley and the bordering mountains range from crystalline rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age to unconsolidated alluvium of Recent age. These rocks have been subdivided into 20 geologic units which may be assigned to 2 broad categories: rocks that yield little water and rocks that yield water freely. The rocks of the first category are chiefly marine sedimentary rocks of Late Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Early Tertiary age and a basement complex of pre-Tertiary crystalline rocks. The rocks of the second category consist predominantly of nonmarine valley-filling sediments of late Tertiary and Quaternary age, which constitute the principal ground-water reservoir in the Sacramento Valley. \r\n\r\nThe rocks that yield little or no water includes the following geologic units: 1, Basement complex of the Sierra Nevada (pre-Tertiary); 2, Shasta series (Lower Cretaceous); 3, Chico formation (Upper Cretaceous); 4, Paleocene series; 5, Eocene series (in part, water yielding); 6, basalt (Tertiary); 7, sedimentary rocks of volcanic origin on the west side of the Sacramento Valley (Tertiary, in part water yielding) ; 8, intrusive rhyolite and andesite and vent tuff of the Sutter Buttes (Pliocene); and 9, tuff-breccia of the Sutter Buttes (Pliocene, in part water yielding). \r\n\r\nThe rocks that yield water freely, comprises the following geologic units: 1, Volcanic rocks from the Sierra Nevada (Eocene to Pliocene; in part yield little or no water); 2, Tuscan formation (Pliocene; in part yield little or no water); 3, Tehama formation (Pliocene); 4, Tehama formation and related continental sediments, undifferentiated (Pliocene and Pleistocene); 5, Laguna formation and related continental sediments (Pliocene and Pleistocene); 6, fanglomerate from the Cascade Range (Pleistocene); 7, Red Bluff formation (Pleistocene); 8, Victor formation and related deposits (Pleistocene); 9, alluvial-fan deposits (Pleistocene and Recent); 10, river deposits (Recent); and 11, flood-basin deposits (Recent). \r\n\r\nThe volcanic rocks from the Sierra Nevada consist chiefly of andesitic and rhyolitic detritus. Most of these volcanic rocks are fragmental and were deposited either as mudflows or by streams. Their permeability is extremely variable, the poorly consolidated sandstone and conglomerate strata locally yield water copiously to wells, but the interbedded fine-grained and cemented strata are virtually impermeable and act as confining layers. \r\n\r\nThe Tuscan formation, which occurs in the northeastern part of the valley, consists of fragmental andesitic and basaltic mate","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. These Quaternary materials are divided on the basis of topgraphic position into 'high terrace deposits' and 'alluvium.' The high terrace lies at an elevation of 50 to 60 feet above the alluvium, which in turn lies 7 to 15 feet above the channel of the Canadian River. Southwest of Norman a relatively thick section of these deposits occur as a hydrologic unit and overlie impermeable Permian shale. The high terrace deposits contain thick beds of clay, silt, and fine sand, whereas the alluvium contains a higher percentage of coarse sand and gravel.\r\nGround-water recharge is estimated to be 23 percent of the normal annual precipitation of 33.22 inches; the specific yield is about 15 percent, and the coefficient of permeability is about 1,000 gpd/ft2. Using these figures 17,000 acre-feet of water is computed to be in storage within the area acting as a hydrologic unit. About 3.6 million gallons of water is discharged daily from the high terrace deposits through a 16,000-foot section of alluvium having a saturated thickness of 40 feet along the river.\r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the high terrace deposits meets the standards of the U.S. Public Health Service for domestic water used by Interstate carriers but nitrate content of one well is higher than recommended by the Oklahoma Department of Public Health. Water in the alluvium is of poorer quality because the water is concentrated by evapotranspiration.\r\n\r\n(available as photostat copy only)","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr61177","usgsCitation":"Stacy, B.L., 1961, Ground water in the alluvial deposits of the Canadian River valley near Norman, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 61-177, 61 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr61177.","productDescription":"61 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":184149,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d7fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stacy, Bill L.","contributorId":99637,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stacy","given":"Bill","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It summarizes and evaluates information about the water resources of this area that are pertinent to the choice of location and operation of an Army nuclear power reactor. The quantity, quality, nature, and use of the local water that might be affected by the location and operation of a reactor in the area were subjects of investigation. Variations in the quality of the water caused by variation in streamflow, tidal effects, and pollution were important facets of the investigation. \r\n\r\nDuring extended periods of low streamflow in the Potomac River (usually in the late summer months), salty water moves upstream from Chesapeake Bay and increases the dissolved solids content of the surface waters adjacent to Fort Belvoir. When the streamflow is low the concentration of dissolved solids in the water near the river bottom exceeds that near the surface. \r\n\r\nThe waters in Gunston Cove usually contain more dissolved oxygen than those in the Potomac River. During the summer, the content of dissolved oxygen in the cove waters frequently exceeds 100 percent of saturation. \r\n\r\nSurface floats that were released on a flood tide in Gunston Cove moved toward the inner portion of the cove in the same direction as the wind and the tide. The maximum average velocity of these floats was 0.65 feet per second. On an ebb tide, many surface floats that were released in Gunston Cove moved toward the inner portion of the cove in the direction of the wind, in opposition to the direction of the tidal movement. Floats released near the mouth of the cove on the same tide, moved with the tide out of the cove through a narrow pass at the end of a submerged sandbar extending from the Fort Belvoir shoreline. The maximum average velocity of the floats in the pass on this ebb tide was 0.85 feet per second. Measurements of subsurface flow direction indicate that the water in the deeper part of Gunston Cove tended to move toward Accotink Bay on the flood tide and out of the cove into the Potomac River on the ebb tide. The water 150-500 feet offshore from the reactor site tended to move toward Accotink Bay on the flood tide and toward Pohick Bay on the ebb tide, whereas waters 30 feet from the Fort Belvoir shoreline tended to move counterclockwise during part of the time. In Gunston Cove the maximum measured flood velocity was 0.48 feet-per second, and the maximum ebb velocity was 0.71 per second. \r\n\r\nDuring periods of low streamflow, pollutants that enter the Potomac River at Fort Belvoir may move as much as 5.5 miles upstream on a flood tide and as much as 5 miles downstream on an ebb tide. At higher flow rates movement of pollutants is less upstream and greater downstream. The time required to flush the 10-mile reach of the Potomac River adjacent to Fort Belvoir varies from a day or two at high-flow rates to several weeks at low-flow rates.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1586A","usgsCitation":"Durfor, C.N., 1961, Water quality and hydrology in the Fort Belvoir area, Virginia, 1954-55: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1586, iv, 57 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1586A.","productDescription":"iv, 57 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137037,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26291,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1586a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cfe4b07f02db545ed2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Durfor, Charles N.","contributorId":50881,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Durfor","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The outflow from the lake, based on limited streamflow records varies from less than 60 cfs to well over 15,000 cfs, with an annual flow in 1960 of 3196 cfs or 2,320,000 acre-feet. With this pronounced variation in flow, regulation by storage is necessary for power development. The requisite storage can be developed by drawing the lake below its natural level. For complete regulation, a drawdown of 78 feet would be required. Regulation of 90 percent of mean flow can be accomplished with a drawdown of 67 feet. Construction of a dam at or near the lake outlet is not considered feasible. The most likely site for a powerhouse appears to be in the McArthur River Valley where a mean head of as much as 1004 feet could be utilized which with a mean flow of 3196 cfs could develop 218,000 kw. The principal market for this power would be the Anchorage and vicinity area and the Kenai Peninsula.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6174","usgsCitation":"Jackson, B.L., 1961, Potential water power of Lake Chakachamna, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 61-74, ii, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6174.","productDescription":"ii, 20 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":424641,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1961/0074/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146605,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1961/0074/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Lake Chakachamna","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.04132064729359\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.35691037863626,\n              61.04132064729359\n            ],\n            [\n              -152.35691037863626,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ],\n            [\n              -153.46504003618713,\n              61.25520856033796\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db6830c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jackson, Bruce Lawellin","contributorId":103296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jackson","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"Lawellin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169187,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
