Ground water can be obtained in varying amounts from the red beds of Permian age, but yields of wells are small and the water is of poor quality at most places.\r\nRoosevelt's municipal water needs are supplied from 9 wells, 2 miles west of town (fig. 1). Eight of these wells obtain water from the red beds. The other well taps an alluvial deposit about 30 feet in thickness. It was reported that test drilling for the town of Roosevelt found this deposit to be 25 to 30 feet in thickness with only the lower few feet saturated. The tributaries head at an altitude as high as 1,400 feet and the mouth of Beaver Creek is at an altitude of 804 feet. Alluvial material has been deposited along all the major streams in the basin. The alluvium contains a high percentage of clay and fine sand and ranges in thickness from a few inches to 50 feet.\r\nReplenishment of water in the alluvium is from precipitation, lateral seepage and runoff from adjoining areas, and infiltration from the streams during high flows.\r\n\r\nThe town of Ryan and Waurika have constructed municipal water-supply wells topping the alluvium and residents of the town of Sugden have private wells topping the alluvium. The valley, which heads in the Laurentian Divide, and covers about 120 square miles, coincides approximately with a bedrock valley filled with as much as 150 feet of glacial deposits.
\n
A complex sequence of glacioaqueous sediments made up of clay, silt, sand, and gravel was delineated from test holes drilled at 238 sites. These sediments range in thickness from 0 to 125 feet and can be considered a hydrologic unit, bounded below by sandy till or bedrock and above by as much as 60 feet of clayey till. The piezometric surface ranges from 0 to about 70 feet below land surface, thus, the glacioaqueous deposits are not everywhere completely saturated. In places, however, the water is under artesian pressure.
\n
Within the Mountain Iron-Virginia area about 50 square miles are underlain by deposits 20 feet or more in thickness of silt, sand, or gravel that constitute an aquifer that is a large potential source for additional water supplies. Except for iron and manganese, which are present in excessive amounts in some wells, the water meets U.S. Public Health Service standards for municipal supplies. Pumping tests of wells in the permeable sand or gravel deposits at five sites indicate that yields of several hundred gallons per minute and possibly as much as 2,000 gpm (gallons per minute) can be expected.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","doi":"10.3133/wsp1539A","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Minnesota Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Commission and with the Division of Waters, Minnesota Department of Conservation","usgsCitation":"Cotter, R.D., and Rogers, J., 1961, Exploratory drilling for ground water in the Mountain Iron-Virginia area, St. Louis County, Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1539, Document: 19 p.; 2 Plates: 33.00 x 40.48 inches and 39.00 x 22.02 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1539A.","productDescription":"Document: 19 p.; 2 Plates: 33.00 x 40.48 inches and 39.00 x 22.02 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":424450,"rank":5,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24726.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26056,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1539a/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137939,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1539a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26058,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1539a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26057,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1539a/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"St. Louis County","otherGeospatial":"Mountain Iron-Virginia area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.75,\n              47.566667\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.75,\n              47.375\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.5,\n              47.375\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.5,\n              47.566667\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.75,\n              47.566667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8c42","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cotter, R. A. Einstein for computing the total discharge of sediment particles of sizes that are in appreciable quantities in the stream bed. This procedure was modified by the U.S. Geological Survey and adapted to computing the total sediment discharge of a stream on the basis of samples of bed sediment, depth-integrated samples of suspended sediment, streamflow measurements, and water temperature. This paper gives simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge by the modified Einstein procedure. Each of four homographs appreciably simplifies a major step in the computations. Within the stated limitations, use of the homographs introduces much less error than is present in either the basic data or the theories on which the computations of total sediment discharge are based. The results are nearly as accurate mathematically as those that could be obtained from the longer and more complex arithmetic and algebraic computations of the Einstein procedure.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1593","usgsCitation":"Colby, B.R., and Hubbell, D.W., 1961, Simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge with the modified Einstein procedure: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1593, vi, 17 p. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1593.","productDescription":"vi, 17 p. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26000,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264358,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-1.pdf","size":"3161","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264359,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-2.pdf","size":"2582","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264360,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-3.pdf","size":"1606","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264361,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-4.pdf","size":"355","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264362,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-5.pdf","size":"1808","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264363,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-6.pdf","size":"1599","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264364,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-7.pdf","size":"4402","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264365,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-8.pdf","size":"4532","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f9e4b07f02db5f38d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colby, Bruce R.","contributorId":59775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hubbell, David Wellington","contributorId":88330,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hubbell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"Wellington","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Clear-water flow was compared with flow containing from 6 1 000 to 65,000 parts per million of fine sediment (bentonite). The study shows that the form of bed roughness could be changed by adding sufficient fine sediment (bentonite) to the clear-water flow. The total bed material transport was decreased by 50 percent with increasing fine sediment\nconcentration with the dune bed form and was increased by as much as 550 percent for the transition, standing wave, and antidune forms of bed roughness. Resistance to flow was less (C/√ g increased by 45 percent) with fine sediment-laden flow than with clear-water flow for the dune, and transition bed forms; and was greater (C/√ g   reduced by 25 percent) for the standing waves and the antidunes. A narrow range of bentonite concentration for each form of bed roughness was established as a limit below which only minor changes in bed form, bed material transport, and resistance to flow occurred. The variation of the liquid properties, specific weight and viscosity, for water-bentonite dispersions were studied and their effect on the properties of the bed material particles measured. The fall velocity of the particles in a dispersion of 100, 000 parts per million fine sediment in water was reduced to about one-half their fall velocity in clear water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Fort Collins, CO","doi":"10.3133/70047695","usgsCitation":"Haushild, W.L., Simons, D.B., and Richadrson, E.V., 1961, A study of flow in alluvial channels: the effect of large concentrations of fine sediment on the mechanics of flow in a small flume, viii, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70047695.","productDescription":"viii, 44 p.","numberOfPages":"53","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":278730,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047695/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"15.02 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":276775,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70047695/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"527a217be4b051792d0194c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Haushild, William Leland","contributorId":87447,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haushild","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Leland","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482737,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Simons, Daryl Baldwin","contributorId":98621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Simons","given":"Daryl","email":"","middleInitial":"Baldwin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482738,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Richadrson, Everett V.","contributorId":75053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Richadrson","given":"Everett","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":482736,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Coarse-grained seat rocks range from argillaceous to nearly pure quartz sandstone (ganister). Seat rocks composed of clay-sized particles (underclays) range from mixtures of illite, mixed-layer clay, and kaolinite to essentially pure kaolinite. Variations in the quartz or kaolinite content suggest that there are degrees of alteration in the formation of a seat rock and that all kinds of seat rock were formed by leaching of the substratum in a swamp. The increasing crystallinity of the clay minerals from plastic underclays to semiflint clay to flint clay and the corresponding increase in titanium support this conclusion. These two features suggest strongly that flint clays formed in place in an acidic swamp environment. The Olive Hill clay shows residual acidity. Seat rocks are affected by the chemical environments in the swamp before peat accumulation, during peat accumulation, and during coalification. Kaolinite is forming in present-day swamps and in wet acidic soils in Hawaii and probably formed in late Paleozoic swamps. Presence of all but one of the Douglass Creek mammalian species in the Pipestone Springs-Canyon Ferry early Oligocene fauna suggests that the three ancient ecosystems resembled each other in much the same way as the 19th century systems. The early Oligocene deposits and biota of the Douglass Creek basin indicate a moist, temperate climate with seasonal variations. Sediment size and distribution suggest that the cross-valley relief was no greater than it is now. The fish and invertebrate faunas show that a shallow, hard-water lake existed in the area. The flora included a lowland, lake-border association and an upland coniferous forest. Although the ancient Douglass Creek biota doubtless included many species not represented in the fossil collections, most of the mammalian species are probably represented in the combined Douglass Creek, Pipestone Springs, and Canyon Ferry fossil assemblages. If so, the number of mammalian species was about the same as in the 19th century ecosystem.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1961)72[1633:POAEOB]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Konizeski, R.L., 1961, Paleoecology of an early oligocene biota from Douglass Creek Basin, Montana: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 72, no. 11, p. 1633-1642, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1961)72[1633:POAEOB]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1633","endPage":"1642","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":385864,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Montana","otherGeospatial":"Douglas Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -113.06510925292969,\n              46.584350070440536\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.91130065917969,\n              46.584350070440536\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.91130065917969,\n              46.62963563393178\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.06510925292969,\n              46.62963563393178\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.06510925292969,\n              46.584350070440536\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"72","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Konizeski, Richard L.","contributorId":80248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Konizeski","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":816283,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Data were obtained from U ore samples representing deposits above the water table, deposits just above and below perched water tables, and deposits at least 250 ft. below the water table in the Hulett Creek area, Wyoming. The first U deposition occurred more than 250,000 years ago for the deposits now at or above the water table. Approximately 60,000 to 80,000 years ago these deposits were oxidized, leached, and locally enriched.
