The mean (or expected) value of technically recoverable undiscovered oil for the Study Area (Federal 1002 Area, adjacent State waters, and Native Lands) is estimated at 10.4 billion barrels of oil (BBO) and for the Federal 1002 Area the mean is 7.7 BBO.  Accumulation sizes containing the oil are expected to be sufficiently large to be of economic interest.  At a market price of $21 per barrel, 6 BBO of oil in the Study area is expected to be economic.  The Assessment's methodology, results, and the reasons for the significant change in assessments are reviewed.  In the concluding section, policy issues raised by the assessment are discussed.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr02119","usgsCitation":"Attanasi, E., and Schuenemeyer, J.H., 2002, Frontier areas and resource assessment: Case of the 1002 area of the Alaska North Slope: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-119, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02119.","productDescription":"21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160758,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9155,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-119/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":405621,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_51231.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"1002 area, North Slope","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -146.4167,\n              69.6083\n            ],\n            [\n              -142.0583,\n              69.6083\n            ],\n            [\n              -142.0583,\n              70.1417\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.4167,\n              70.1417\n            ],\n            [\n              -146.4167,\n              69.6083\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b445b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Attanasi, Emil 0000-0001-6845-7160 attanasi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6845-7160","contributorId":1809,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Attanasi","given":"Emil","email":"attanasi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206321,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schuenemeyer, John H.","contributorId":54227,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schuenemeyer","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206322,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Algae and aquatic invertebrate samples\r\nwere collected from cobble riffles, submerged\r\nwoody-snag habitats, and from depositional areas\r\nsuch as pools. Between 1993 and 1996, fish and\r\ncrayfish were collected from all wadeable habitats\r\nat each of seven basic-fixed sites using either electroshocking\r\nmethods or seining. Additional fish\r\nand crayfish were collected at one site on the Truckee\r\nRiver in 1997. Fish were identified to species,\r\nmeasured for total and standard length, checked\r\nfor anomalies, and weighed at the collection site.\r\nFish were returned to the stream after measurements\r\nwere taken. Measurements of water depth,\r\nstream velocity, determinations of substrate type\r\nand substrate embeddedness were made at each\r\nsampling site. Algae and aquatic invertebrate samples\r\nwere sent to the U.S. Geological Survey\r\nNational Water-Quality Laboratory for identification\r\nand enumeration.\r\nA total of 103 semi-quantitative and 55\r\nqualitative algae samples were collected at 20\r\nriver reaches on the Carson and Truckee Rivers\r\nbetween 1993 and 1996. These samples represent\r\nalgae in cobble riffles, on submerged woody\r\nsnags, and on sediment surfaces in depositional\r\nareas. In those 158 samples, 514 algal species,\r\nvarieties, or forms were identified. Of the 8 algal\r\nphyla represented, the diatoms (Phylum Bacillariophyta)\r\nwere the most abundant with 351 species,\r\nvarieties, or forms. The green algae (Phylum Chlorophyta)\r\nwere next in abundance with 108 species,\r\nvarieties, or forms followed by the blue-green\r\nalgae (Phylum Cyanophyta) with 41 species, varieties,\r\nor forms.\r\nA total of 49 semi-quantitative aquatic\r\ninvertebrate samples were collected at 27 river\r\nreaches on the Carson and Truckee Rivers between\r\n1993 and 1996. These samples represent invertebrates\r\nin cobble riffles and on submerged woody\r\nsnags. In those 49 samples, members of 6 phyla\r\nwere identified. Roundworms were identified only\r\nto phylum (Nematoda) and free-living flatworms\r\nand snails were identified only to class (Turbellaria\r\nand Gastroda). Organisms were identified as\r\nbelonging to 19 invertebrate orders. Most of the\r\ninvertebrates that could be identified to genus or\r\nspecies belonged in the orders Ephemeroptera,\r\nPlecoptera, and Trichoptera of the arthropod class\r\nInsecta.\r\nFish and crayfish populations in the Carson\r\nand Truckee Rivers were sampled 29 times\r\nbetween 1993 and 1997. These collections\r\nresulted in the identification of 18 fish species and\r\none endemic crayfish species. Twelve of the 18\r\nfish species identified are not native to the Carson\r\nand Truckee River Basins.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr0212","usgsCitation":"Lawrence, S., and Seiler, R.L., 2002, Physical data and biological data for algae, aquatic invertebrates, and fish from selected reaches on the Carson and Truckee rivers, Nevada and California, 1993-97: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-12,  216 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0212.","productDescription":" 216 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160973,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2712,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/ofr02-012/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685b7a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lawrence, S.J.","contributorId":67922,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lawrence","given":"S.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Seiler, R. Specific conductance, pH, water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentrations and percent dissolved oxygen saturation measurements were made with submersible data recorders at 30 minute intervals for a period of 3-6 days during August 2000. Benthic algae collected from wood and rock substrate were identified and enumerated. Biovolume (volume of algal cells per unit area), density (number of cells per unit area), and chlorophyll-a content from benthic algae were determined. These data can be used as part of the multiagency study to develop an understanding of the relations among nutrient concentrations, algal abundance, algal community composition, and primary production and respiration processes in rivers of differing ecoregions in Minnesota.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Mounds View, Depth-integrated samples of seasonal snowpacks at 52 sampling sites, in a network from New Mexico to Montana, were collected and analyzed each year since 1993. The results of the first 5 years (1993–97) of the program are discussed in this report. Spatial patterns in regional data have emerged from the geographically distributed chemical concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate that clearly indicate that concentrations of these acid precursors in less developed areas of the region are lower than concentrations in the heavily developed areas. Snowpacks in northern Colorado that lie adjacent to both the highly developed Denver metropolitan area to the east and coal-fired powerplants to the west had the highest overall concentrations of nitrate and sulfate in the network. Ammonium concentrations were highest in northwestern Wyoming and southern Montana.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr01466","usgsCitation":"Ingersoll, G.P., Turk, J.T., Mast, M.A., Clow, D.W., Campbell, D.H., and Bailey, Z.C., 2002, Rocky Mountain snowpack chemistry network: History, methods, and the importance of monitoring mountain ecosystems: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2001-466, iii, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr01466.","productDescription":"iii, 14 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":161094,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2691,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr01466/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":393247,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49732.htm"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Rocky Mountains","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.75,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -105,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.75,\n              49\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.75,\n              35.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fe4a2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ingersoll, George P. gpingers@usgs.gov","contributorId":1469,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ingersoll","given":"George","email":"gpingers@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206254,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Turk, John T.","contributorId":53363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Turk","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206258,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mast, M. Analytical data received from 98\r\nlaboratories were evaluated with respect to overall laboratory performance and relative laboratory\r\nperformance for each analyte in the six reference samples. Results of these evaluations are\r\npresented in tabular form. Also presented are tables and graphs summarizing the analytical data\r\nprovided by each laboratory for each analyte in the six standard reference samples. It seems likely that gold\r\ndeposits along these linear trends were, therefore, controlled by\r\ndeep regional crustal fault systems.\r\nTwo-dimensional resistivity modeling of the magnetotelluric\r\ndata generally show resistive (30 to 1,000 ohm-m) crustal blocks\r\nbroken by sub-vertical, two-dimensional, conductive (1 to 10 ohmm)\r\nzones that are indicative of large-scale crustal fault zones.\r\nThese inferred fault zones are regional in scale, trend\r\nnortheast-southwest, north-south, and northwest-southeast, and\r\nextend to mid-crustal (20 km) depths. The conductors are about\r\n2- to 15-km wide, extend from about 1 to 4 km below the surface\r\nto about 20 km depth, and show two-dimensional electrical\r\nstructure. By connecting the locations of similar trending\r\nconductors together, individual regional crustal fault zones\r\nwithin the upper crust can be inferred that range from about 4-\r\nto 10-km wide and about 30- to 150-km long. One of these crustal\r\nfault zones coincides with the Battle Mountain-Eureka mineral\r\ntrend. The interpreted electrical property sections also show\r\nregional changes in the resistive crust from south to north.\r\nMost of the subsurface in the upper 20 km beneath Reese River\r\nValley and southern Boulder Valley are underlain by rock that is\r\ngenerally more conductive than the subsurface beneath Kelly Creek\r\nBasin and northern Boulder Valley. This suggests that either\r\nelevated-temperature or high-salinity fluids, alteration, or\r\ncarbonaceous rocks are more pervasive in the more conductive area\r\n(Battle Mountain Heat-Flow High), which implies that the crust\r\nbeneath these valleys is either more fractured or has more\r\ncarbonaceous rocks than in the area surveyed along the 41st\r\nparallel.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/ofr0239","usgsCitation":"Rodriguez, B.D., and Williams, J.M., 2002, Resistivity structure across the Humboldt River basin, north-central Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-39, 114 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr0239.","productDescription":"114 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":391188,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_46505.htm"},{"id":59784,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0039/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":2591,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/ofr0239","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":160156,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0039/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Humboldt River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116,\n              39.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.25,\n              39.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.25,\n              41.0833\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              41.0833\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              39.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db629aa9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rodriguez, Brian D. 0000-0002-2263-611X brod@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2263-611X","contributorId":836,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rodriguez","given":"Brian","email":"brod@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206012,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Williams, Jackie M.","contributorId":11217,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Jackie","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206013,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The map is based on water-level measurements in 65 wells. The potentiometric surface was as high as 110 feet above sea level near the northwestern boundary and outcrop area of the aquifer in northern Anne Arundel County. From this area, the potentiometric surface declined towards large well fields at Severndale, Arnold, and Annapolis. The ground-water levels declined to 78 feet below sea level at Severndale, 38 feet below sea level at Arnold, and 31 feet below sea level a few miles west of Annapolis. There was also a cone of depression covering a large area in Charles County that includes Waldorf, LaPlata, Indian Head, and the Morgantown power plant. The investigation was initiated as a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.\r\n\r\nMembers of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe have expressed concern that Tribal members residing in the city of Flandreau experience more health problems than the general population in the surrounding area. Prior to December 2000, water for the city of Flandreau was supplied by wells completed in the Big Sioux aquifer within the city of Flandreau. After December 2000, water for the city of Flandreau was supplied by the Big Sioux Community Water System from wells completed in the Big Sioux aquifer along the Big Sioux River near Egan, about 8 river miles downstream of Flandreau. There is some concern that the public and private water supplies provided by wells completed in the Big Sioux aquifer near the Big Sioux River may contain chemicals that contribute to the health problems.\r\n\r\nData compiled from other investigations provide information about the water quality of the Big Sioux River and the Big Sioux aquifer in the Flandreau area from 1978 through 2001. The median, minimum, and maximum values are presented for fecal bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, and atrazine. Nitrate concentrations of water from Flandreau public-supply wells occasionally exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level of 10 milligrams per liter for public drinking water.\r\n\r\nFor this study, untreated-water samples were collected from the Big Sioux River in Flandreau and from five wells completed in the Big Sioux aquifer in and near Flandreau. Treated-water samples from the Big Sioux Community Water System were collected at a site about midway between the treatment facility near Egan and the city of Flandreau. The first round of sampling occurred during July 9-12, 2001, and the second round of sampling occurred during August 20-27, 2001. Samples were analyzed for a broad range of compounds, including major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, antibiotics, and organic wastewater compounds, some of which might cause adverse health effects after long-term exposure. Samples collected on August 27, 2001, from the Big Sioux River also were analyzed for human pharmaceutical compounds.\r\n\r\nThe quality of the water in the Big Sioux River and the Big Sioux aquifer in the Flandreau area cannot be thoroughly characterized with the limited number of samples collected within a 2-month period, and for many analytes, neither drinking-water standards nor associations with adverse health effects have been established. Concentrations of some selected analytes were less than U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking-water standards at the time of the sampling, and concentrations of most organic compounds were less than the respective method reporting levels for most of the samples.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr02474","usgsCitation":"Schaap, B.D., 2002, Reconnaissance-level assessment of water quality near Flandreau, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-474, iv, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02474.","productDescription":"iv, 32 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":173731,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":415111,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_54229.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":4005,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr02474/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","city":"Flandreau","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.6667,\n              44.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.6667,\n              43.9833\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.5333,\n              43.9833\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.5333,\n              44.1\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.6667,\n              44.1\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48d1e4b07f02db54772c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schaap, Bryan D.","contributorId":63438,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schaap","given":"Bryan","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":236247,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These results are part of a larger study designed to evaluate the role of biogeochemical processes in sediments in the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in the south Florida ecosystem. The data are briefly discussed in regard to regional trends in the concentrations of chemical species, and general diagenetic processes in sediments. These results are part of a larger study designed to evaluate the role of biogeochemical processes in sediments in the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in the south Florida ecosystem. These elements play a crucial role in regulating organic sedimentation, nutrient dynamics, redox conditions, and the biogeochemistry of mercury in the threatened wetlands of south Florida.\r\n\r\nPore water samples for chemical analyis were obtained using a piston corer/squeezer designed to avoid compression of the sediment and avoid oxidation and contamination of the pore water samples. Results show distinct regional trends in both surface water and pore water geochemistry. Most chemical species in surface and pore water show peak concentrations in Water Conservation Area 2A, with diminishing concentrations to the south and west into Water Conservation Area 3A, and Everglades National Park. The largest differences observed were for phosphate and sulfide, with concentrations in pore waters in Water Conservation Area 2A up to 500x higher than concentrations observed in freshwater marsh areas of Water Conservation Area 3A and Everglades National Park. Sites near the Hillsboro Canal in Water Conservation Area 2A are heavily contaminated with both phosphorus and sulfur. Pore water profiles for dissolved reactive phosphate suggest that recycling of phosphorus at these contaminated sites occurs primarily in the upper 20 cm of sediment. High levels of sulfide in pore water in Water Conservation Area 2A may inhibit mercury methylation here. At sites in Water Conservation Area 3A south of Alligator Alley, sulfide levels are much lower and sulfate reduction in the sediments here may be conducive to methyl mercury formation. Concentration versus depth profiles of biogeochemically important chemical species in pore water at most sites are smoth curves amenable to modelling using standard diagenetic equations. This should allow prediction of rates of biogeochemical processes in these sediments for incorporation in ecosystem models.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr97454","usgsCitation":"Orem, W.H., Lerch, H.E., and Rawlik, P., 2002, Geochemistry of surface and pore water at USGS coring sites in wetlands of South Florida, 1994 and 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-454, ii, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97454.","productDescription":"ii, 55 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":168853,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0454/coverthb2.jpg"},{"id":3723,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0454/ofr97454.pdf","text":"Report","size":"62.1 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 97-454"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.4853515625,\n              24.806681353851964\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.453125,\n              24.806681353851964\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.453125,\n              27.0982539061379\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.4853515625,\n              27.0982539061379\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.4853515625,\n              24.806681353851964\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cfe4b07f02db5464bc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Orem, William H. 0000-0003-4990-0539 borem@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4990-0539","contributorId":577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Orem","given":"William","email":"borem@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":229523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lerch, Harry E. tlerch@usgs.gov","contributorId":600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lerch","given":"Harry","email":"tlerch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":229524,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Rawlik, Peter","contributorId":12543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rawlik","given":"Peter","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":229525,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This report, which is one in a series of 15, presents maps of areas in the municipality of Tocoa that would be inundated by a 50-year flood of Rio Tocoa. Geographic Information System (GIS) coverages of the flood inundation are available on a computer in the municipality of Tocoa as part of the Municipal GIS project and on the Internet at the Flood Hazard Mapping Web page (http://mitchnts1.cr.usgs.gov/projects/floodhazard.html). These coverages allow users to view the flood inundation in much more detail than is possible using the maps in this report.\r\n\r\nWater-surface elevations for an estimated 50-year-flood on Rio Tocoa at Tocoa were estimated using HEC-RAS, a one-dimensional, steady-flow, step-backwater computer program. The channel and floodplain cross sections used in HEC-RAS were developed from an airborne light-detection-and-ranging (LIDAR) topographic survey of the area and a ground survey at one bridge. There are no nearby long-term stream-gaging stations on Rio Tocoa; therefore, the 50-year-flood discharge for Rio Tocoa, 552 cubic meters per second, was estimated using a regression equation that relates the 50-year-flood discharge to drainage area and mean annual precipitation. The drainage area and mean annual precipitation estimated for Rio Tocoa at Tocoa are 204 square kilometers and 1,987 millimeters, respectively. It was assumed that a portion of the 50-year flood, 200 cubic meters per second, would escape the main channel and flow down a side channel before re-entering the main channel again near the lower end of the study area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr02262","usgsCitation":"Kresch, D.L., Mastin, M.C., and Olsen, T.D., 2002, Fifty-year flood-inundation maps for Tocoa, Honduras: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-262, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02262.","productDescription":"13 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":4576,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/ofr02262/index.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":179233,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Honduras","city":"Tocoa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.43251127996213,\n              16.43006388749069\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.43251127996213,\n              12.876909617568344\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.7967072779427,\n              12.876909617568344\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.7967072779427,\n              16.43006388749069\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.43251127996213,\n              16.43006388749069\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f47a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kresch, David L.","contributorId":46084,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kresch","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":243092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mastin, Mark C. 0000-0003-4018-7861 mcmastin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4018-7861","contributorId":1652,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mastin","given":"Mark","email":"mcmastin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":243090,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Olsen, T. The High Plains aquifer underlies 174,000 square miles in parts of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting a water-quality study of the High Plains aquifer as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program. To help interpret data and select sites for the study, it is helpful to know the location of irrigated land within the study area. To date, the only information available for the entire area is 20 years old. To update the data on irrigated land, 40 summer and 40 spring images (nominal date 1992) were acquired from the National Land Cover Data set and processed using a band-ratio method (Landsat Thematic Mapper band 4 divided by band 3) to enhance the vegetation signatures. The study area was divided into nine subregions with similar environmental characteristics, and a band-ratio threshold was selected from imagery in each subregion that differentiated the cutoff between irrigated and nonirrigated land. The classified images for each subregion were mosaicked to produce an irrigated-land map for the study area. The total amount of irrigated land classified from the 1992 imagery was 13.1 million acres, or about 12 percent of the total land in the High Plains. This estimate is approximately 1.5 percent greater than the amount of irrigated land reported in the 1992 Census of Agriculture (12.8 millions acres).","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr2002441","usgsCitation":"Qi, S.L., Konduris, A., Litke, D.W., and Dupree, J., 2002, Location of irrigated land classified from satellite imagery - High Plains Area, nominal date 1992 (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-441, raster digital data set, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr2002441.","productDescription":"raster digital data set","costCenters":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":177395,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":340298,"rank":2,"type":{"id":16,"text":"Metadata"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0441/ofr2002441_metadata.html","text":"OFR 2002-441 Metadata","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"OFR 2002-441 Metadata"}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a69e4b07f02db63be6b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Qi, Sharon L. 0000-0001-7278-4498 slqi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7278-4498","contributorId":1130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Qi","given":"Sharon","email":"slqi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":622,"text":"Washington Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":248079,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Konduris, Alexandria","contributorId":53459,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Konduris","given":"Alexandria","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248082,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Litke, David W.","contributorId":19145,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Litke","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248080,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Dupree, Jean","contributorId":43428,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dupree","given":"Jean","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":248081,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Starting in the mid-1800s canals and levees were built in the area to drain and help develop economic and water resources including protection from floods and droughts. These construction projects have changed the natural water flow (hydropattern and hydroperiod) through the hydrologic system. Changes to the hydropattern and hydroperiod of the area have also had an adverse impact by disrupting the normal breeding patterns of species within the Everglades ecosystem</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr02325","productDescription":"viii, 24 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":170041,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0325/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":390974,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_54122.htm"},{"id":4155,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/0325/ofr02-325.pdf","text":"Report","size":"499 KB MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 02-325"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","county":"Miami-Dad County","otherGeospatial":"Lake belt study area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.52154541015625,\n              25.64895443060557\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.25787353515625,\n              25.64895443060557\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.25787353515625,\n              25.94322678532246\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.52154541015625,\n              25.94322678532246\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.52154541015625,\n              25.64895443060557\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"<p><a href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\" data-mce-href=\"https://www.usgs.gov/centers/car-fl-water\">Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center</a><br>U.S. Geological Survey<br>3321 College Avenue<br>Davie, FL 33314</p><p><a href=\"../contact\" data-mce-href=\"../contact\">Contact Pubs Warehouse</a></p>","publishedDate":"2003-10-01","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-10-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b441f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kindinger, Jack L. jkindinger@usgs.gov","contributorId":815,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kindinger","given":"Jack","email":"jkindinger@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":242065,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It is most useful for applications in which the geometry of the 3D model domain and the spatial distribution of physical properties and boundary conditions is relatively simple. SutraPrep can be used to create a SUTRA main input (?.inp?) file, an initial conditions (?.ics?) file, and a 3D plot of the finite-element mesh in Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) format. Input and output are text-based. The code can be run on any platform that has a standard FORTRAN-90 compiler. Executable code is available for Microsoft Windows.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr02376","usgsCitation":"Provost, A., 2002, SutraPrep, a pre-processor for SUTRA, a model for ground-water flow with solute or energy transport: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-376, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02376.","productDescription":"43 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":4169,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/nrp/gwsoftware/sutraprep/sutraprep.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":176452,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687f2a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Provost, Alden M.","contributorId":85652,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Provost","given":"Alden M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The map, based on water level measurements in 54 wells, shows that during the 26-year period, the potentiometric surface ranged from zero at the outcrop area, which is in the northernmost part of the study area, to a decline of 75 feet at Waldorf. Waldorf is located near the southwesternmost part of the study area, and approaches the downdip boundary of the aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr02445","usgsCitation":"Curtin, S.E., Andreasen, D., and Wheeler, J.C., 2002, The Difference Between the Potentiometric Surfaces of the Magothy Aquifer, September 1975 and September 2001 in Southern Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2002-445, 1 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr02445.","productDescription":"1 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":176438,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4208,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://md.water.usgs.gov/publications/ofr-02-445/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e63c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtin, Stephen E. securtin@usgs.gov","contributorId":3703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtin","given":"Stephen","email":"securtin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":242146,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andreasen, David C.","contributorId":59003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andreasen","given":"David C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242148,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wheeler, Judith C.","contributorId":13620,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"Judith","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":242147,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
