They rank among the most destructive in the country's his ory. Augmented by the antecedent hurricane sto m of August 11-15, the rainfall of August 17-20 accompanying hurricane Diane reached maximum val es of 17 to 19 inches in south-central Massachusett • Record-breaking floods resulted within a broad re ion extending from southeastern Pennsylvania to east rn Massachusetts. The floods were outstanding in four categories: The large geogra hie area covered by floods of such magnitude; the ex ensive damage and loss .of life ranking with the grea est recorded in this country; the degree to which prio records were exceeded; and the distribution which as such that the greatest floods occurred predominate! on the smaller streams. Property damage has been stimated to be about half a billion dollars and was most~y concentrated in the heavily industrialized valleys f New England. A death toll of 179 persons was attr\"buted to the floods. Peak discharges exceeded previ usly established maxima by 2. 2 and 2. 3 times respec ively, on Blackstone River at Woonsocket, R. I. , and Q inebaug River at Putnam, Conn.; 4. 1 times on Nau atuck River near Thomaston, Conn. ; and 4. 5 times on 1 ush Kill at Shoemakers, Pa. A unit runoff of 2, 300 c 1 hie feet per second per square mile occurred from ~· 50 square miles on Powdermill Brook near Westfiel , Mass. Although the floods were generally greate t on the smaller streams, Connecticut River at Hart ord reached the third highest stage since settlement an Delaware River between Port Jervis and Trenton exce ded the previous historic flood of 1903. This adv ce report has been prepared to supply preliminary · formation needed for immediate planning. It has been r leased pending preparation of a more comprehensive r port covering a three-month period of floods within an area from Massachusetts to North Carolina. In luded herein, for the region from Massachuset s to Pennsylvania, are general descriptions of the fEods, peak discharges for the present and previous rec rd floods at gaging stations, peak discharges at m y miscellaneous sites in the areas of greatest floo ing, and detailed stage and discharge data at 51 selecte gaging stations.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir377","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1956, Floods of August 1955 in the Northeastern States: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 377, iii, 76 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir377.","productDescription":"iii, 76 p. :maps (1 fold.) diagrs., tables. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30966,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":30967,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118300,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1956/0377/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dae4b07f02db5dff7d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The proposed sites are on the rugged mainland of Southeastern Alaska along Gastineau Channel and Taku Inlet near Juneau. Bedrock in the area consists of a coastal strip of northwestward-trending foliated metamorphic rocks with steep northeasterly dips. This belt of rocks is adjacent to the Coast Range batholith on the northeast, with a 2 to 3 mile wide zone of injection gneiss between the main batholith and the metamorphic rocks. Unconsolidated glacial and post-glacial deposits of Quaternary age mantle the bedrock over large parts of the area. The valleys of Sheep and Carlson Creeks have been modified by glaciers of Pleistocene age and Turner Lake occupies a rock basin formed by glacial scour.

There is an excellent site in greenstone bedrock at Sheep Creek for either a concrete or a rock fill dam. A conduit from the dam to a powerhouse along Gastineau Channel would be on bedrock for most of the distance. Slate bedrock suitable for a powerhouse site is exposed near the mouth of Sheep Creek. To the northwest along Gastineau Channel, bedrock is concealed by a mantle of glacial deposits of unknown thickness. The reservoir is in essentially impermeable bedrock; however, a main haulage adit of the Alaska-Juneau gold mine would probably have to be sealed off to prevent flooding of the mine workings or possible loss of water from the reservoir.

The dam, diversion tunnel, and powerhouse at Carlson Creek are all in bedrock consisting of fresh injection gneiss. This rock is well suited as the foundation of a concrete or rock fill dam, but foundation treatment would be required to seal off closely spaced open joints trending perpendicular to the proposed dam axis. The diversion tunnel would stand unsupported except possibly where it would intersect two zones of closely spaced joints. The reservoir would be in essentially impermeable bedrock.

Both the main dam and auxiliary structure at Turner Lake would be on an excellent foundation of granitic rock (granodiorite). Loose landslide debris would have to be removed at the dam site to expose fresh, sound bedrock. There is a powerhouse site in bedrock along Turner Creek at a stream elevation of 16 feet. Foundation conditions for a powerhouse at tidewater, near the mouth of Turner Creek were not studied. The conduit would be on sound granitic rock throughout its length, and the reservoir is entirely in relatively tight granitic bedrock.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr5695","usgsCitation":"Plafker, G., 1956, Geologic investigations of proposed Sheep Creek, Carlson Creek, and Turner Lake power sites, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 56-95, Report: 37 p.; 3 Plates: 21.80 x 26.79 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr5695.","productDescription":"Report: 37 p.; 3 Plates: 21.80 x 26.79 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148778,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0095/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":425179,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0095/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425178,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0095/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425177,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0095/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":425176,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1956/0095/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Carlson Creek, Sheep Creek, Turner Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -134.55931309956082,\n              58.53883347149653\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.55931309956082,\n              58.1955967884052\n            ],\n            [\n              -133.88300839367312,\n              58.1955967884052\n            ],\n            [\n              -133.88300839367312,\n              58.53883347149653\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.55931309956082,\n              58.53883347149653\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a5008","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171151,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A geologic examination of the sites indicates that their development would not be hindered by any unusual geologic conditions.

On the basis of the 18 years of available stream-flow records for Cascade Creek, it is estimated that 20,800 kilowatts of power could have been generated continuously on Cascade Creek; 13,300 kilowatts on Scenery Creek, and 7,900 kilowatts on Delta Creek. Conditions for power development on Delta Creek are not as favorable as on Cascade Creek or Scenery Creek in view of the size of the structures required in relation to the potential power.

The development of a substantial part of this power would depend upon the creation of new industries as the present power market is very limited. There is a heavy growth of timber near tidewater throughout this part of Alaska, and the utilization of this timber in the manufacture of wood pulp is the most likely industrial possibility.

The Cascade Creek, Scenery Creek, and Delta Creek drainage basins are in rugged mountainous terrain. There is little land in the immediate vicinity suitable for the location of industrial developments and the supporting communities, and the power would have to be transmitted to a more favorable area. The nature of these investigations ranged from field examinations of individual prospects or the laboratory analysis of significantly radioactive samples submitted by prospectors to reconnaissance studies of large districts. In this period no deposits of uranium or thorium that would warrant commercial exploitation were discovered. The investigations, however, disclosed that radioactive materials occur in widely scattered areas of Alaska and in widely diverse environments.
\n
\n
Many igneous rocks throughout Alaska are weakly radioactive because of uranium- and thorium-bearing accessory minerals, such as allanite, apatite, monazite, sphene, xenotime, and zircon; more rarely the radioactivity of these rocks is due to thorianite or thorite and their uranoan varieties. The felsic rocks, for example, granites and syenites, are generally more radioactive than the mafic igneous rocks. Pegmatites, locally, have also proved to be radioactive, but they have little commercial significance. No primary uranium oxide minerals have been found yet in Alaskan vein deposits, except, perhaps, for a mineral tentatively identified as pitchblende in the Hyder district of southeastern Alaska. However, certain occurrences of secondary uranium minerals, chiefly those of the uranite group, on the Seward Peninsula, in the Russian Mountains, and in the vicinity of Kodiak suggest that pitchblende-type ores may occur at depth beneath zones of alteration. Thorite-bearing veins have been discovered on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska.
\n
\n
Although no deposits or carnotite-type minerals have been found in Alaska, several samples containing such minerals have been submitted by Alaskan prospectors. Efforts to locate the deposits from which these minerals were obtained have been unsuccessful, but review of available geologic data suggests that several Alaskan areas are potentially favorable for carnotite-type deposits. The chief of these areas is the Alaska Peninsula-Cook Inlet area which encompasses most of the reported occurrences of the prospectors' carnotite-type samples.
\n
\n
Alaska is also potentially favorable for the occurrence of large bodies of the very low-grade uraniferous sedimentary rocks, such as phosphorites and black shales. This type of deposit, however, has not received much study because of the emphasis on the search for bonanza-type high-grade ores. Uraniferous phosphorites similar to those of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming occur in northern Alaska on the north flank of the Brooks Range; black shales comparable to the uraniferous shales of the Chattanooga formation of southeastern United States have been noted along the Yukon River near the international boundary.
\n
\n
Placer deposits in Alaska have some small potential for the production of the radioactive elements as byproducts of gold- and tin-placer mining. the placer area believed to have the relatively greatest potential in Alaska lies in the Kahiltna River valley where concentrates are known to contain such commercial minerals as ilmenite, cassiterite, platinum, and gold in addition to uranothorianite and monazite.
\n
\n
The possibilities of the natural fluids--water and petroleum--have not yet been tested in Alaska to any great extent. Studies of fluids are in progress to determine whether they may be used to discover and define areas potentially favorable for the occurrence of uraniferous lodes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/tei577","collaboration":"This report concerns work done on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.","usgsCitation":"Wedow, H., 1956, Summary of reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in Alaska, 1945-1954, and an appraisal of Alaskan uranium possibilities: U.S. Geological Survey Trace Elements Investigations 577, Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/tei577.","productDescription":"Report: 111 p.; Plate: 19.12 x 13.83 inches","numberOfPages":"112","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":288869,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/report.pdf"},{"id":288868,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/tei/0577/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":288870,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 172.45,51.21 ], [ 172.45,71.39 ], [ -129.99,71.39 ], [ -129.99,51.21 ], [ 172.45,51.21 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae784ae4b0abf75cf2d03c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wedow, Helmuth Jr.","contributorId":14374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wedow","given":"Helmuth","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":284456,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Vertical crevices are most likely to develop where joints traverse the more soluble beds; bedding-plane crevices in the same beds are likely to form directly above shale partings that are somewhat thicker than average. In the Hopkinsville quadrangle 80 per cent of the wells drilled in limestone of Mississippian (Carboniferous) age obtain adequate water supplies for home or farm needs, because of the extensive development of the bedding-plane crevices.

Data from 146 wells reveal a fairly uniform distribution of crevices to an average depth of about 80 feet; the frequency of crevices declines rapidly at greater depth. A rapid increase in mineral content of water below 100 feet signals a decrease in rate of circulation that must be attributed to a decrease either in number of or size of crevices, or to a combination of both.

Ratio between the lowering of water level in observation wells and the gaged stream discharge during rainless periods (base flow) gives a storage coefficient of 0.005—that is, 0.5 per cent of drainable open space in creviced limestone. The first, applied many years ago, consists of detailed observation of aquifer inflow, outflow, and storage changes, and their variations in time. By analysis of these observations, estimates of the perennial recharge to the aquifer and other pertinent hydrologic data are obtained, all as gross characteristics of the aquifer. The need for greater detail gave rise to a second fundamental method: special field tests, such as pumping tests, by which the hydrologic coefficients could be measured in a comparatively short time. In order to evaluate properly the ability of an aquifer to serve as a source of perennial water supply, the geology and hydrology of the aquifer must be known in some detail over its entire area. The first method cannot supply the necessary detail in most cases, and the second method cannot ordinarily provide the needed areal coverage because of the lack of appropriate testing facilities. Thus an auxiliary third approach was sought which would combine the features of a simple data‐collection program with a final analysis yielding both adequate detail and areal coverage.

A method designed to satisfy these requirements is described. Water‐level altitudes, usually observed in the course of more general ground‐water studies, are analyzed by numerical methods, using finite‐difference approximations of the basic differential equations which describe ground‐water flow. Analytical methods are given for nonsteady flow through homogeneous and nonhomogeneous aquifers. Both direct and statistical solutions are shown. The hydrologic factors are computed as functions of transmissibility, and for the nonhomogeneous aquifer the variations of transmissibility in space are computed also from the water‐level data. Knowledge of the absolute value of any one of the hydrologic factors at some location in the aquifer permits conversion of the computed functions to absolute terms for all the aquifer flow field studied.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/TR037i004p00451","usgsCitation":"Stallman, R., 1956, Numerical analysis of regional water levels to define aquifer hydrology: Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, v. 37, no. 4, p. 451-460, https://doi.org/10.1029/TR037i004p00451.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"451","endPage":"460","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":380366,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"37","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stallman, Robert W.","contributorId":32903,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stallman","given":"Robert W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":804525,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
