The early industries in America generally were established when and where demands for the products of industry arose. Most of the early industries were so located that their increasing requirements for transportation, raw materials, market, labor, and water supply could be satisfied economically. Many of these original plant locations have continued as modern industrial centers and their output has increased manyfold in meeting the demands of our growing Nation. The recent and current industrial expansion and the trend toward the growth of chemical industries, many Of which are heavy users of water, has resulted in a tremendous increase in the total withdrawal of water for industrial use as well as a large increase in the per capita use of water. This increase in industrial water requirement has strained the capacity of the developed water supplies in many areas, and in some instances the adequacy of the potential water supplies is questionable.
The Geological Survey is engaged in preparing and publishing a series of reports describing the developed and undeveloped water resources of many important industrial areas. This work was started initially at the request of the National Securities Resources Board as a means to insure that water supplies are adequate for our rapidly expanding industrial development. Although many factors contribute to establishing the feasibility or even the limits of future industrial development, the one relating to available water supply is extremely important. A knowledge of the water requirements of various industries is valuable therefore in planning the logical development in any area where water supply is a critical factor. Thus far very little suitable information on the water requirements of our major industries is available for general planning. An inventory of unit water-use values in industry therefore would be generally helpful and also might tend to stimulate water-conservation methods. To obtain such information, investigations

In southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah strata of conglomeratic sandstone are localized at the base of the Brush Basin shale member of the Morrison formation of Jurassic age. These strata are discrete lithologic units that contain sedimentary structures oriented in a prevailing easterly direction, they locally rest upon sandstone in the Salt Wash that is ore bearing, and they are believed to cover about one-third of the underlying Salt Wash sandstone member in southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. Easterly trending planar cross-stratification and trough cross-stratification-type bedding and a general westward coarsening of sediments in the strata suggest they are the products of stream aggradation from westerly source areas.
\nUranium-vanadium deposits in the uppermost, almost continuous, layer of sandstone of the Salt Wash member have been classified according to their association with the conglomerate strata. Of the 364 deposits that have been studied in the uppermost sandstone layer of the Salt Wash, 29 percent of the total are directly below a conglomeratic sandstone stratum, 61 percent are below their projected trend, 6 percent are beyond the safe limits of projection, and 4 percent are lateral to their margins. Locally, a conglomeratic sandstone stratum may be mineralized. Where this happens, it is usually near clusters of deposits in the uppermost sandstone of the underlying Salt Wash member.
\nLate Jurassic Morrison ground-water conditions can be postulated to localize uranium-vanadium rich ground water below the conglomerate strata.

The investigation of the ground-water resources of Santa Barbara County was continued (luring 1954 in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Wallet Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 182 wells in 6 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements covering the period 1941 through 1952 have been published in U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers; those for 1953 are in press and have already been released locally in duplicated form. Water-Supply Paper 1068 contains tabulated descriptions for 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the various ground-water basins of the county. The same publication contains also many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific GAB and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.
Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Time River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1108 100U. and 1110-B respectively. In October 1952 \"Reports on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity, Santa Ynez River, Santa Barbara Count, Calif.,\" prepared respectively by Messrs. H. C. Troxell of the Surface Water Branch and H. D. Wilson, Jr., of the Ground hater Branch, U. S. Geological Survey, were released (Troxell and Wilson, 1952).
In 1954 water-level measurements were made by the city of Santa Maria and the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, in addition to those made by the Geological Survey, and are included in this report.

The data so obtained have been useful in the planning and construction of dams and reservoirs, the utilization of the water within the basin, and in planning the economy of areas outside of the basin, partially or wholly dependent on the diversion or importation of water from the Colorado River or its tributaries. Much chemical quality data of the Colorado River and its tributaries collected during the period from 1925 to 1940 have not been published in detail.
The purpose of this report is to make available for consultation and ready reference those previously unpublished data collected for the period 1925 to 1940, mainly between 1930 and 1940. Included among these data are many detailed chemical analyses of composites of daily samples and single samples of the Colorado River and its main tributaries and less detailed analyses of many other samples. In a few instances, for continuity of the record, analyses are included that have been published in Survey reports. Discussions of the quality of water of the Colorado River basin either in published reports or in mimeograph form are available; therefore, this report will include only tabulated data.
Data obtained for the period 1925 to 1930 for the most part were published in three Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers, 596-B, 636-A, and 638-D, all out of print. Summary data for the streams in the Colorado River basin for the period 1925 to 1943 were published in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Paper 970, \"Quality of surface waters of the United States, 1943\". These summaries consist mainly of annual weighted averages of chemical analyses, dissolved-solids loads, and extremes of dissolved solids and hardness. Analyses of samples from Lake Mead are available in a series of reports, \"Lake Mead Density Currents Investigations\", by the Bureau of Reclamation /1937 -1940, Vols. I and ll; 1940 -1946; Vol. III/. Data on the suspended sediment in the Colorado River for the period 1925-1941 were published in 1947, in U.S. Geological Survey Water -Supply Paper 998. Since 1940 results of water-quality investigations in the Colorado River basin have been published in the annual U.S. Geological Survey reports, \"Quality of surface waters of the United States\".

\nThis report presents basic information pertaining to the ground-water resources of the central Pierce County area which has been obtained by the United States Geological Survey since the beginning of the cooperative groundwater investigation in 1937. The data have been tabulated and prepared for release at this time so that they may be used by those concerned with the development and use of ground-water supplies in the area. A comprehensive report analyzing and interpreting the basic data is being prepared and will be released in the future.

The search located 32 sites that may be underlain by sand and gravel. The thicker deposits are significant with respect to the occurrence of ground water, and all of them are of interest as possible sources of sand and gravel for construction purposes, such as for highway construction. The thickness of these deposits ranges from 4.4 feet to 77 feet, and the computed resistivity for these ranges from a low of 97,800 ohm-cms to a high of 423,800 ohm-cms. The study located with certainty one buried channel filled with sand and gravel deposits and pointed out the possibility of others that may be aquifers. The interpretations show that a large deposit of sand and gravel is present in the eastern part of the area investigated and it is tentatively assumed that this deposit is continuous and may yield large quantities of ground water. Places where the deposit was found to be the thickest and of high resistivity are described.

A larger and more pointful source of information and analysis is the legal-scientific writings of the geologists, hydrologists, meteorologists, engineers and others. When new statutes are to be drafted by legislatures, and new decisions are to be made by courts on this subject, such literature may well be of far greater importance than legal precedents unfounded on scientific fact. This may be demonstrated by the character and scope of the legal-scientific literature of ground water, just one branch of water science, but one which is of major importance to any thoughtful consideration of water use and control.
